“Where coffee is a big deal”

When you step into the world of Travelers’ Coffee Roasters, you ’ re stepping into more than a business you ’ re stepping into a story brewed from both adventure and devotion The spark began not in a small-town café, but in New York City, where Sarah ordered her very first specialty mocha at Toby’s Estate and realized coffee could be something entirely new: an experience, not just a drink. That single cup sent her, Mark, and John on a journey across 49 states, chasing coffee shops, collecting mugs, and shaping a dream that would one day bring them back home to roast their own beans in Northeast Oklahoma Today, the trio has turned passion into a business that feels equal parts family, adventure, and community with every roast inviting you to take a little trip of your own

Not long after their return from NYC, John was a high schooler slinging lattes at Wonder City Coffee in Locust Grove Sarah, not one to miss out, tagged along to a barista training and soon found herself with a professional espresso machine gleaming in her kitchen. She started making drinks for Bible study groups and church friends, eventually working her way into competitive latte art (placing 3rd in a field of 30 a feat considering she’s self-taught)

The name Travelers’ Coffee Roasters is a nod to that sense of adventure. For Sarah, Mark, and John coffee is more than a drink —it’s an invitation to explore, connect, and experience something new

At Travelers’, beans don’t just get roasted they get profiled “We roast slow, to bring out the natural flavors,” John explains “Coffee doesn’t have to be just a cup of brown, muddy liquid. Done right, it’s fruit, chocolate, even cola notes. It’s meant to be enjoyed.”

Their approach is rooted in curiosity and precision Rwanda beans sing at a light roast with bright, fruity notes Colombia, meanwhile, can swing dark for a rich, chocolatey profile Ethiopia? That one ’ s been a crowd favorite, thanks to its complexity and the team’s careful roast.

Their signature roast, Homebound, pays tribute to their roots in Rose and Locust Grove A comforting medium-to-dark Colombian, it’s designed to taste like “coming home after a road trip.” Another fan-favorite is Take Flight, a bold, kicky blend of Ethiopian and South American beans, named for its energy and adventurous spirit.

Like any family business, the journey has had its missteps “We ruined so many beans in the beginning,” Sarah laughs “Our backyard smelled amazing, and apparently the deer loved it they ate it all and got very caffeinated.”

But mistakes turned into learning, and learning turned into excellence Along the way, they’ve relied heavily on their community Bags were shared at church and with friends for feedback Some of their darkest roasts were inspired by loyal locals who wanted coffee “ so dark it sets off the fire alarms”

Beyond roasting, Travelers’ aims to be a partner in Northeast Oklahoma’s growing coffee scene Already supplying local café Perked Up in Salina, they’re eyeing shelves in convenience stores and building partnerships with cafés across the region

family, coffee is deeply personal. Sarah and would love to share one last cup with their late Granny, who though loyal to her Folgers would surely be proud of their venture John, a lifelong animation fan, jokes that he’d sip espresso with Tex Avery, the genius behind Looney Tunes

Travelers’ Coffee Roasters isn’t aiming to be just another café they’re staying laser-focused on roasting, education, and partnerships Their goal for year one? Grow into local shelves, supply more cafés, and expand their online store, shipping fresh-roasted beans anywhere adventure calls

Walking out of their roasting room a cozy setup with a 25 lb roaster, bags of green coffee beans, and memorabilia from coffee shops across the country you can’t help but feel that this is more than a business It’s a lifestyle. It’s a story. It’s a journey told one cup at a time.

And if you ask Sarah, John, and Mark what the vibe of Travelers’ Coffee Roasters truly is, the answer comes easy: Adventurous Have fun Enjoy life Enjoy your people

Coffee & Confessions

In Salina, Oklahoma, there’s a little black trailer with a big heart and an open ear It’s not just a place to grab your morning latte or iced caramel fix it’s a front porch, a living room, and a confessional all rolled into one Welcome to Our House Coffee, where every drink comes with a smile and every customer feels like family.

For Josh Davis, coffee was never just about caffeine it was about connection. After years away, moving back to Northeast Oklahoma meant starting over in a community he once called home The dream of a coffee shop was there, but no building could be found Then came the “hairbrained idea” that changed everything: a coffee trailer

“I just wanted to get to know people,” Josh says. “You know me—I like to talk. What better way than serving coffee?”
BECAUSE SOMETIMES ALL YOU NEED IS CAFFEINE… AND SOMEONE TO LISTEN.
“When someone asks, ‘Where should we grab coffee?’ the answer can be, ‘At Our House.’ It gives that family feeling—a bigger house, where everyone’s welcome.”

As for the name, it’s as inviting as a fresh pot of coffee Our House Coffee was never meant to sound like one person ’ s claim it’s about shared ownership When someone says, “That’s Our House,” it carries a sense of community, family, and belonging It’s not my house or your house it’s our house, a place everyone is welcome

“Some people admit they love stopping by just to talk,” Josh laughs. “And we’re good with that. It’s about giving people an experience—not just a product.”

Drive-up to the window and you’ll notice something: it feels like home Sure, the Carmanilla (caramel + vanilla magic) might keep you coming back, but the conversations are what make it memorable

The goal? That customers feel like it’s not just a coffee shop, but their coffee shop.

The beans come from Tom Kennedy, a roaster who treats coffee like fine wine Josh and his family keep the drinks approachable

Whether you ’ re sipping an Americano or proudly ordering a frozen concoction, there’s no coffee snobbery here just high-quality taste with a side of fun

Crowd favorite

If you haven’t tried the Carmanilla, consider it a rite of passage But Our House has a playful side, too think pumpkin spice in the fall, peppermint in December, and a lemon berry frozen drink in summer that tastes like an oldfashioned lemon icebox pie There’s even a salted caramel off-menu special for those in the know.

Running a mobile coffee shop has its quirks Stocking supplies is the constant challenge because at Our House , “Sorry, we ’ re out” just isn’t in the vocabulary. And while a sit-down café is in the future plans, the trailer has its own charm. It’s nimble , it’s neighborly, and it has plenty of room for laughter.

What sets Our House apart is simple: it’s family-run Every drink, every greeting, every sprinkle of whipped cream comes from the people who care most about consistency and kindness

FUNNY MOMENTS FROM THE TRAILER…

“Ranch Dressing, Please”

One of Our House Coffee’s funniest moments came courtesy of a regular who was distracted by chatter in her car She ordered her usual Carmanilla then asked for it topped with “ranch dressing” After a few stunned seconds, laughter erupted all around. She quickly corrected herself “I meant whipped cream!” but the nickname stuck Now, every time she drives up, Josh’s mom teases her with a smile: “Would you like ranch on that today?” It’s the kind of inside joke that makes customers feel less like customers and more like family

Whipped Cream, Sprinkles, and a Side of Independence

Another unforgettable moment came from a pint-sized coffee “regular” About three and a half years old, she confidently ordered her “coffee” (a kid’s cup of whipped cream with sprinkles) and insisted on paying She proudly handed her mom a plastic toy credit card, which her mom slyly passed along with her real one Josh swiped it like any other payment and handed the cards back The little girl’s face lit up she truly believed she had bought her own coffee With a grin wider than her whipped-cream mustache, she left feeling like a “big girl.” It was a small act of kindness that turned into a forever memory

“Sometimes, our window is like confession,” Josh admits with a grin. “People just need someone to talk to. And we love serving people—that’s the heart of it all.”

The dream doesn’t stop at the trailer Josh, who also pastors Life Connection Church in Salina, envisions a sit-down café and drivethru once the church moves into phase three of its building plans. Until then, Our House Coffee will keep serving community one Carmanella, one story, one smile at a time

Because in Salina, coffee isn’t just about what’s in the cup. It’s about the people you share it with. And at Our House, there’s always room for one more.

50 Shades of Fit(ish): Heavy on the “ish”

This was the hardest article for me to write which is exactly why this issue is late hitting the press. I “started” this journey back in July, and then… did absolutely nothing. NOTHING. So here I am now, forcing myself to answer the very questions I begged ChatGPT to ask me raw, real, and painfully honest. I hated every second of it. But if I’m going to drag myself through the mud, I might as well bring you along for the ride. So, here you go… (I hated to write this article so much, I didn’t change the look of it...including my pictures)

The Last Time I Felt Proud of My Body

If you asked me when I last felt proud of my body, I’d draw a blank High school comes to mind, but honestly, that’s unfair to my 49-yearold self The closest answer is 2019, when I had an abdominoplasty (tummy tuck) and got rid of the extra skin. For a while, I felt good. But surgery fixes skin, not your brain — and eventually, the shine wore off.

The Fitness Lies I’ve Believed

I’ve carried a few fitness lies like bad wedding vows:

Lie #1: Fitness requires hours in the gym (I don’t have hours. Or patience. Or the desire to grunt under fluorescent lights )

Lie #2: I can’t stick to anything. I chalk it up to my own form of ADHD shiny-object syndrome But truthfully? It feels more like an excuse than a diagnosis.

Snack Time & Other Guilty Pleasures

If my daily habits played on a movie screen, my eating would earn me a bad Rotten Tomatoes score I snack when I’m working, I snack when I’m bored, and I don’t exactly stop when the food tastes amazing And don’t get me started on fitting rooms. The unfiltered thoughts? “Might as well hit the plussize section and grab a muumuu ”

Comparison: The Thief of Joy (And Sanity)

If I stopped comparing myself to women half my age, I’d instantly feel lighter. But comparison is like glitter: once it’s in your life, you never fully get rid of it. The pressure to be “perfect” sticks, even when I know better

My Version of Balance

Forget Pinterest-perfect balance Mine looks like:

Eating something green once in a while

Sleeping more than five hours

Drinking actual water (not just coffee and wine)

Keeping a checklist that makes me feel like I run my life instead of the other way around

Apologies & Gratitude

If I wrote my body a letter, it would start with an apology: Sorry for neglecting you

Sorry for thinking I had all the time in the world. Sorry for the disgusted looks in the mirror.

And then it would turn into gratitude: Thank you for carrying me anyway For creating life. For being beautiful even when I refused to notice.

Special shoutout to my boobs they’ve been through wars (pregnancy, nursing, weight swings). They deserve a medal, not my criticism.

What Fit(ish) Means Right Now

Being fit(ish) gives me freedom: the freedom not to be perfect, the freedom to laugh at myself. But it also holds me back, because deep down, I know people don’t expect much from me in this area.

Right now, fit(ish) means strength Not skinny Not a number on a tag. Just strength, confidence, and clothes that don’t make me cry.

Strong vs. Weak

I feel strongest when I stick to the plan: sun on my face, food as fuel, hydration, movement, rest. Simple, grounding, powerful. I feel weakest when I overindulge in food and wine. The crash is more than physical it’s mental and emotional, too.

The Unfiltered Truth

Here’s what I don’t usually say out loud: I feel like I’m faking it all the time At the gym, at the table, even in front of the mirror. If my body could talk, it would probably shout: “You did this to me. Now fix it!” And if I stopped chasing numbers and started chasing feelings, I’d probably be happier… maybe even successful.

The Bottom Line

I don’t expect to look like I did in high school But I also don’t want to settle for shame or moomoos I want to create a version of myself that my 80-year-old self will thank me for.

Because fit(ish) isn’t failure. Fit(ish) is freedom. And sometimes, freedom looks like walking in nature, drinking water, and yes… unapologetically eating the chips.

Classy, hilarious, and real.

That’s fit(ish)

“Do not be embarrassed by your failures, learn from them and start again.”
