Dear Readers! Never mind, 'Season of mists and mellow fruitfulness' … as I write, it's been bloomin' cold and I have had to put my heating on!! I was hoping to hold out until the end of October which just goes to prove it's not always good to be an eternal optimist!! Although Autumn in all its glory is only just really starting to reveal itself, we are already beginning to detect more than a whiff of festiveness' … which is why, as there are only now two more issues of Local People before the end of the year (eeek!!), you should seriously think, if you have anything festive to get out there, about how you are going to do it!! LPM can help as both our November and December/January issues will each go out directly through over 23,500 local doors and more besides. We will always work around you and your budget, so don’t be shy - give us a ring, we can just have a chat (no hard sell!) and see if we can help your business to achieve a bit of a seasonal boost. Some lovely new advertisers in this issue, interesting editorial, reader offers, competitions (lots of tickets and more to win, see Pages 46 54!) and good stuff! If your thoughts are more nuptials than Noel, see our feature on Page 14! I am off to do a bit more learning this week (my head hurts!!) and then to meet up with the other three people that I shared a flat with as a 2nd year student many, many years ago! So excited!! Ooh, yes, nearly forgot! We are on the Treacle Market at the end of October. Come and see us in the churchyard!

Have a good month, Heather

Autumn in Macclesfield

Please tell your friends and family about these family events organised by Macclesfield Town Council and help them to make it a fantastic Autumn in Macclesfield! community@macclesfield-tc.gov.uk On Saturday 7th October at the United Reformed Church, Park Green, the Mayor of Macclesfield Beverley Dooley is holding a Quiz Night to raise money for her chosen charities ROAR (Reach out and Recover) and Space 4 Autism. The quiz will start at 7:30pm and costs £10 to enter a team of 4. Entrants can pre-order mini fish ‘n’ chips or pie ‘n’ peas for a cost of £3.00 per person. To book a team entry, please email civic@macclesfield-tc.gov.uk or call 01625 374142. On Saturday 14th October 11am-2pm, there will be a Welly Walk for families in West Park. The free event is designed to encourage outdoor play. There will be a mini forest school, hands on flint fire lighting lessons, den building, a static bush craft display, birds of prey, outdoor themed storytelling, birdwatching, creepy crawlies and a Welly Wander around the park. The Welly Wander will involve locating footprints around the park and carrying out a small activity to help see the wonder in the great outdoors. Helena Gowler, Community Engagement Office for MTC says that ‘Autumn is a great time of year for families to get outside and play. This event will hopefully inspire more people to pull on their wellies and spend some time trudging through the fallen leaves and having some fun.’ Pumpkin Path and Spooky Café Halloween event On Saturday 28th October from 10am - 2pm, put on your spookiest Halloween outfit and visit the Haunted Halloween café in Macclesfield Market Place. Find the hidden pumpkins around the Town Centre and receive a treat…or trick! Bring along your pre-carved pumpkin and enter it into the competition and meet some giant pumpkins who will be wandering around the Market Place. The event will again be raising money for the Mayor of Macclesfield’s chosen charities as above. 6

History Man’s Best Friend By Catherine Rose to obey the rules of their pack. Scientists believe that our hunter-gatherer forefathers took grey wolf puppies from the wild, taming and interbreeding them to have traits according to the needs of their owners – from being hunting companions to helping herd livestock.

The domestic dog (canis familiaris) has been around for almost 20 thousand years. Despite much speculation, modern research has concluded that all dogs are descended from the grey wolf (canis lupus), although it is difficult to see what some of today’s diverse breeds have in common with them. Today’s domestic dog is the most varied mammal on earth in terms of shape, size and behaviour. The oldest dog remains date back 19 thousand years and were uncovered at a Palaeolithic site close to the Ukraine. Another Palaeolithic tomb excavated in Israel contained the skeletons of a man and his dog who had been buried together, demonstrating the bond in life between the two. Like man, wolves are sociable pack animals who accept the authority of a group leader. This made them readily adaptable to human leadership, being naturally loyal and able

This selective breeding meant that some dogs developed an acute sense of smell, hearing or vision, while others developed speed and stamina, or guarding, hunting and retrieving skills. These traits evolved over thousands of years to produce diverse canine types that were then bred within those types to evolve into the domestic dog breeds we have today. We know from murals that dogs were kept by the ancient Egyptians, Greeks and Romans. Chinese emperors lavished so much care on their canine companions that they were even said to have their own servants. In Europe, owning a dog gained popularity from the 13th century onwards, and during the Middle Ages it became a status symbol. Dogs were still largely kept for purpose rather than pleasure until the mid-19th century, when the Victorians made family pet-owning a sought-after social practice. With it came organised dog shows and the birth of the Kennel Club in

1873 to differentiate between and regulate ‘pure’ or pedigree breeds. Dogs outside of the specialisations came to be known as mixed breed or mongrels. The first Crufts was held in 1891. Different dog breeds differ widely in their life spans. Larger dogs tend to be shorter lived: Great Danes, for example, typically only survive eight years. The breed with the shortest lifespan - around five years - is said to be the Dogue de Bordeaux, while the longest-lived breeds are Toy Poodles and Border terriers, both of which can survive for up to 15 years. According to the Guinness Book of World Records, the oldest dog was a mongrel named Pusuke, who was almost 27 years old when he ‘crossed over the rainbow bridge’. Our long relationship with dogs runs deep into the backwaters of human history and will no doubt continue to do so. With the right training, dogs have consistently proved themselves to be intelligent, loyal, affectionate and often invaluable companions, rightfully earning themselves a place within our homes as a much-loved member of the family.

wedding contract to provide for and own his spouse. This is never more perfectly illustrated than in the case of the Roman bride who had a gold ring to wear in public and an iron one to wear at home while doing the chores. The Victorians are responsible for many of our modern customs. Queen Victoria started the trend for wearing a white wedding dress in 1840 (long a tradition in Japan). Before then women simply wore their best dress.

A (seemingly!) little known fact: The definition of the word

"Deadline"

according to the Oxford Living Dictionaries is "The latest time or date by which something should be completed." For example, sending in artwork!! Don't let this be you if you want to make the November issue! Get in touch with us nice and early (before 13th October!). 01625 265551

Veils symbolised a bride’s virginity and humility before God, as well as showing she was saving her beauty for her husband (who would lift the veil when she arrived at the altar). But there was another more sinister reason. In the days when a r r a n g e d marriages were common, it wasn’t unusual for the groom to have never laid eyes on his bride before. The veil was an effective way of ensuring he didn’t cut and run before she got to the altar! The Victorians turned the veil into a status symbol: the more wealthy and important you were, the longer the bride’s veil and train. Bridal bouquets were carried as a symbol of fertility and to hide unpleasant smells (the norm in ages when there was little sanitation). The custom of the bride throwing it to the crowd replaced one where guests would rip pieces off the hem of her gown for good luck. It was once even customary for the bridal party to follow the couple to their bedroom and watch the act of consummation. The throwing of the bride’s garter is symbolic of this (thankfully) long dead practice. TO BE CONTINUED …..

It's a real pain in the neck …..!! by Simon Hogan & Ross Mitchell Neck pain is a common problem now. It is possibly due to the rise of more sedentary jobs. It may be partly due to the rise of computers, tablets and smart phones all of which are common in everyday use. We have never looked down so much before! There are of course many reasons which may cause neck pain. Let’s take a look at 2 easy ones you can help yourself. Postural neck pain As the title suggests, it is due to prolonged postures. As a rule of thumb this is anyone who sits for a living, most likely in front of a computer screen! So what is so different that might cause pain? Well our heads are heavy...11 lb or 4kg. Our spines have developed to take the weight of our head through our neck. The muscles around your neck can easily hold your head when you are stood. People rarely complain of neck pain when walking. However, when we start looking down or adopt a ‘forward head’ posture the weight of our head is put through our spines differently and that makes the muscles around our neck work much harder. Try holding 4kg close to you, and then try holding it further away from your body to see what we mean! So what causes the pain? Well… generally it’s the muscles. They get tired, they are asking for a rest and for more blood, oxygen and energy to continue working so hard. The solution? Get your head back on top of your neck! Lean your upper back against the chair and you should find this helps. In addition to this if you are an office worker move your keyboard and mouse closer so that your upper arm falls to by your side, like it would when you are stood, as opposed to reaching forwards in

front of you. And of course move often! These simple changes should reduce your muscle tension, put the weight of your heavy head back where it should be and reduce your pain. Neck pain and stress This is something that often people are hesitant to talk about or accept, which is understandable without explanation. So let’s put this into context. We all have stress of varying levels in our lives, but sometimes it can increase due to our family, friends or work situations. Now stress changes your physiology. It does not mean the pain is ‘all in your head’. Stress causes us to hold ourselves more tense in our muscles, we may not breathe so deeply or sleep so well and there are changes within the chemicals in our brain. These are real changes meaning that we can experience pain in the absence of harm or damage to any structures. But it is still real pain and it really hurts. Ever been nervous before and felt your stomach tighten or churn? Well that is similar, a physical symptom due to a stressful time. The solution? Easier said than done, but try to reduce the things that are causing you to be stressed. If you can’t do that maybe recognise that you are tense and use some active coping strategies like relaxation, breathing techniques or mindfulness, or even just moving your shoulders more often should help. Of course if you are concerned about your neck pain or have pins and needles, numbness or weakness in your arm please consult a health professional with a specialism in musculoskeletal problems.

For the next in our series about long established, independent and bespoke businesses in Macclesfield - which we have now decided to call for the moment -

"Donkeys in the Furniture",

(ie they have been around for donkeys years and are part of the Macclesfield furniture!), we went along to see our friend and local musician, Ben Jackson, at Margin Music. Hard to believe that Margin Music has been in the same premises at 3 Market Place in the centre of Macclesfield, opposite the library, for 31 years now!! It was founded in September 1986 and although the emphasis has shifted over the years, it remains the local business dedicated to the needs of local (and not so local now as they do sell online as well) musicians.

ultimately will be more encouraging than simply going for the cheapest instrument around which may not sound quite as good, which, in turn, is more demotivating at the beginning. We're not talking hundreds of pounds more though, maybe as much as ÂŁ20 will make all the difference. Sounds like good advice!

Ben was quick to emphasize that Margin can order most things in, but just can't stock everything in the The record shop next door has gone and they no shop and indeed, there is not a lot they can't get! longer do a roaring trade in New Year's Eve disco However, Ben is most excited to let us know that equipment but Margin is still here as, unlike many Margin have recently become official stockists of businesses, they have adapted with the times the 'Faith' range of acoustic guitars, the launch whilst continuing to do what they do best. event for this being supported by Ally and Matt of All the people who work at Margin, from the local band, the Virginmarys. Other than guitars, they still stock keyboards, portable stage pianos, saxophones, clarinets, trumpets and flutes, sheet music in their well stocked book room at the back (and much more to order) plus a big range of ukuleles, from entry level up to 'very fancy'. Playing the uke is a big thing in Macclesfield, apparently, so Margin is the place to go if you want to take this up!! They still hire out small PA systems and disco equipment for house parties and other functions and host keyboard and guitar lessons after school during the week and on Saturdays for all ages. Finally, they are still there So whilst once upon a time you had row upon row for when you just want to try something out and of synthesizers and keyboards in the backroom maybe hire a saxophone, clarinet, flute, trumpet or and racks of entry level guitars on the wall, Ben violin on a 3 month basis has been quietly changing the Gearing up now for their very emphasis of the stock held in the busy pre-Christmas period, they shop. Gary Lee, an independent financial adviser from Mulberry Financial in Macclesfield, asks you to spend an hour on your future wealth and wellbeing.

Ask a professional – don’t go it alone! The best part of my job as an adviser specialising in pensions is helping people to understand their options, and to make sensible financial decisions based on the facts. The worst part is seeing people who have made bad decisions, often due to misconceptions and without taking any financial advice. They often copy what friends or relatives have done, ignoring the fact that their circumstances might be totally different. I’m afraid that pensions will always be extremely complicated, and even those with an interest in learning about their options via their own internet research will find it very difficult to get to grips with all the legislation. I would advise ANYONE approaching retirement to have a free initial meeting with an independent financial adviser. This is easy to arrange and is likely to be very informative. If any follow-up work is needed, then fees can be quoted in advance. With pension work, the fee is usually paid via a deduction from the pension pot. If you don’t want to proceed, or you don’t trust the adviser – just walk away and maybe try somebody else. It has cost you nothing other than an hour of your time. It’s better than spending your retirement regretting a decision made in haste Call Mulberry on 01625 427522 if you want a free meeting.

Local People .... talks Benefits of Performing Arts

Youth, Families and Confidence Coach Kalini Kent is also a Communication, Presentation Skills and Drama Specialist, directing shows, and with her own Drama Academy, teaching drama skills that develop Confidence and Communications skills. She writes a bi-monthly piece for LPM about common issues we all face – coping with stress, transition and change, family relationships, bullying, effective communication and other topics LPM readers wish to be tackled. In this issue, Kalini looks at the many benefits for young people and adults of participation in the Performing Arts

WHY TAKE PART IN PERFORMING ARTS? As parents, we desire nothing more than to see our children flourish in life and grow to be confident, resilient and successful adults. We seek the best schools, activities and programs because the 21st century is filled with challenges. Wanting them to thrive, we try to prepare them with every resource available to us. But for children growing up in the modern world, there is greater reliance on technology which often means their interpersonal skills are neglected. Success in school is also all too often purely results based, and if snowed under with academic work, any form of Performing Arts (acting, singing or dancing) may be bottom of the priority list. But there are many reasons why it should play a key role in your child’s education, whether in school or as an extra-curricular activity. Having worked with children for many years teaching Drama, I have seen first-hand children flourishing through performance skills. Many established studies have revealed the positive impact Performing Arts [PAs] can have on young people’s physical, social, emotional and cognitive development, leading to better child development and higher student achievement. Here are just some of the benefits: Communication & Interpersonal Skills: PAs develops language, communication and interpersonal skills, helping them to communicate effectively with others with confidence. It enhances both verbal and 34

non-verbal expression of ideas that benefits young people throughout their life. It improves voice projection, articulation, pronunciation, tone of speech, expression, fluency and how to express oneself with the body. Listening and observation skills are also developed through drama activities, rehearsing and performing.

Self Presentation Skills & Self Confidence: One of the most obvious benefits of PAs is the development of skills in self-presentation - learning how to present themselves in front of an audience of any size and developing the ability to converse with adults in a mature manner. Participation in PAs allows them to develop their self-esteem and self-confidence, learning to overcome anxieties and to be more confident going into unfamiliar situations. This confidence gained then applies to school, career, and life. Imagination and Creativity: Einstein said, “Imagination is more important than knowledge”. PAs play a hugely significant role in developing creative skills. They allow children to be playful and creative, to explore their curiosity and try out new things, new ways of thinking or behaving; and making creative choices and interpreting material in a new way are all essential life skills. Co-operation/Collaboration: PAs are about social interaction and cooperation. Any performance requires collaboration with others, combining the creative ideas and the abilities of all participants, and requiring cooperation and working as a team as they engage in discussions, feedback and rehearsal – all invaluable skills.

To advertise with us, just call 01625 265551

Higher Academic Achievement: Studies suggest school children exposed to PAs are more proficient, and enjoy improved performance, in the traditional subjects of reading, writing and maths. Empathy, Understanding, Tolerance & Social Awareness: Acting in roles from different situations, and interacting with others from different cultures, backgrounds and beliefs promotes understanding of others’ feelings and attitudes, opening them up to new perspectives and ideas. This in turn encourages empathy, compassion and understanding of others and the world around them. Tolerance is another incredibly important skill to develop as it will help with friendships and the ability to work effectively with other people who are different from them, thus building strong communities. Problem Solving and Perseverance & Self Discipline: The process of moving from ideas to actions to performance helps teach self-reliance and discipline in order to reach a goal, as well as motivation, practice and perseverance. Techniques like improvisation help foster quick-thinking solutions, and they also learn the essential art of how to deal with the difficulties that arise through working with others.

whilst playing, practising and performing develops a sustained focus of body, mind and voice.

Trust and “The Whole Child”: Whilst the risk-taking involved in performing in front of an audience develops trust in themselves, their ideas and abilities; the process of social interaction, building relationships, learning to listen to and trust others, and learning about respect for one another is equally important. This is why PAs are so important in developing “the whole child” and helping children to make the most out of school life. Emotional Intelligence: The ability to identify and manage your own emotions and handle the emotions of others empathetically is increasingly being recognised as important to developing happy, well rounded individuals. Emotional Outlet: All forms of PAs activities provide an outlet for expressing a range of emotions and feelings, particularly through acting and role play, helping young people make sense of their emotions. Letting off steam and pent up emotions in this fashion is good for their mental health, as they won’t be bottling up these emotions.

Fitness & Stress Reduction: As well as being good for fitness, PAs activities reduce Memory and Concentration: Rehearsing stress by releasing mental, physical and and performing words, lyrics, movements emotional tension. and cues tightens memory like a muscle, Performing Arts encourages young people to stretch beyond their comfort zone. Enabling a child to speak with confidence, engage an audience and, above all, to believe in themselves, are fundamental to their development. When it comes to employability, most employers would employ someone who is confident and creative, with good self-esteem and effective communication and interpersonal skills. Performing Arts can improve and develop these skills, which will help to enrich their lives in the future, regardless of academic attainment. Local People - A Teenage Perspective …… A small group of students from various year groups at Macclesfield Academy meets regularly to discuss ideas, work together and support each other as writers. The articles they write for us look at life from a sometimes refreshingly alternative perspective!

This issue’s article is by … Brenden Goodwin

Take Me to Church! About two to three years ago, a youth leader from a local church came into my primary school. She spoke in assembly about a youth club which was being run in the church she volunteered at. At that time, I was interested in becoming healthier and being able to exercise more. I asked for a letter almost immediately, considering that the youth club was free and we could go on trips. It seemed like a great opportunity for someone my age! These trips include bowling and going to the cinema. They give us an opportunity to develop our relationship with the other members that are there. The main activity she talked about was playing games (this was probably because it would gain our attention!). We were also informed that we would be able to practice school subjects such as drama and art. The drama was designed around the themes of Christianity and included us reconstructing scenes from Jesus’ life. Similarly, in art, we painted what we believed Jesus’ stories would’ve looked like. I also realised that I would be able to learn more about Christianity. This also means that if I decide to take RE for a GCSE, then I would already have a good understanding of certain religions and their beliefs. On the Sunday that I first went to the youth club, I was amazed at how accepted I (and everybody else) was! This was due to the fact that there was a large age range of members. The youngest members were just ten years old and the oldest were sixteen! As soon as I went in people came over to me saying, “Hi” and “Would you like to play a game?” At first I was nervous about talking to so many new people in such a new environment. However, I was soon relieved to find out that practically all of the people were friendly! About six months into the youth club, I was asked if I would be able to read out a prayer/ reading in front of the entire church's congregation. I agreed. This was because I have always hated to let people down. The day I read the prayer, I was absolutely fascinated by the fact that I was rather talented at it! After I finished the prayer, and was ready to leave with the rest of the congregation, I was showered with people thanking me and saying, “That was amazing!” Choosing to read the prayer was probably the best and most rewarding decision I have made so far in my life. Being “talented” at reading prayers was even more stunning, considering that I am an atheist! I don’t believe in a god! Now, two years later, I am still an active member and always the first person to be asked, “Would you like to read a prayer?” Unsurprisingly, I still say yes to all offers! Brenden Goodwin is 13 years old and his hobbies include Judo and coding. 36

Art, to all of us, will mean something different to ourselves than it does to the next person. Some would choose to see paintings as aspect of celebration, for others it will be a piece of sculpture, or a piece of jewellery; tapestry perhaps. But for all of us, we believe, Art is an emotional liaison between what the eyes see or the hands feel and the connection with our hearts and minds. Forartis was formed by a group of people who are strongly linked to the arts in one form or another. They aim to bring together all aspects of art, in a way that will support and enhance the different facets that go to make up Art as a whole. They want to encourage and promote emerging artists and develop links with local Colleges and Universities. As a company we produce brochures advertising artists/artisans, with each member promoted on the dedicated website having a page of their own showing samples of their work. For artists and art lovers wishing to know more about Forartis and its philosophy, contact vince@forartis.co.uk or gordon@forartis.co.uk Our Social Media sites are also moving forward: www.facebook.com/fortartis www.twitter.com/forartis www.instagram.com/forartis www.forartis.co.uk being our fast developing website.

It cannot be used for the indirect costs • of purchase, such as professional fees, or the deposit which is usually required when you exchange contracts.

EQUITY LOAN (IN ENGLAND) Eligibility • Applies to new-builds only. • First-time buyers and existing homeowners may be eligible. • Property purchase price up to £600,000 in England. • You must live in the property, and not sub-let • It must be your only property. • The home must be purchased from a registered Help to Buy builder. • You cannot use a part-exchange deal on your old home. How it works Also known as shared equity, you own your home using the equity loan scheme, purchasing a proportion of the property up front with the remainder being paid back over a pre-agreed term. Details • You only need a 5% deposit, and a mortgage of up to 75%* • The government loans you up to 20% of the deposit* • You don’t have to pay loan fees for the first five years. • In year six, a charge of 1.75% of the loan becomes payable - this increases each year in line with the Retail Prices Index plus 1%. • An Equity Loan can be repaid at any time, with 10% of the property’s market value being the minimum repayment needed. • The loan must be repaid after 25 years or when you sell your home. SHARED OWNERSHIP Eligibility You may be eligible for the Shared Ownership scheme if your annual household income is £80,000 or less* and: • This is your first home. • You have been a homeowner, but are now unable to afford a property. • You already use the shared ownership scheme. How it works You purchase between 25% and 75% of the property outright and pay a subsidised rent on the outstanding portion. You may be able to purchase more shares until you own the whole property, and the rent is reduced proportionately. Details • The cost of buying more shares, known as ‘staircasing,’ will depend on the property’s value at the time. • If you decide to sell your home, the housing association has a right to buy it from you or to find a buyer. • There is an Older People’s Shared Ownership (OPSO) scheme and a disabled person’s scheme for people with a long-term disability. • Shared ownership properties will be leasehold rather than freehold. STARTER HOME SCHEME The Starter Home scheme is the latest government initiative to help first-time buyers in England onto the property ladder. Although not yet fully up and running, these are the latest eligibility criteria and details known. Eligibility • First-time buyers aged between 23 and 40. • Maximum household income of £80,000* • Must have a mortgage. How it works The government is offering a minimum discount of 20% on a property’s market value, so purchasers will need a mortgage of up to 80%. The purchase price after the discount can be up to £250,000.* Details • There will be restrictions on the resale or letting of the property for 15 years after purchase. • Starter homes under this scheme will be

62

exempt from the Community Infrastructure Levy, which house builders normally have to pay to local authorities. • You can register your interest in this scheme online. Hopefully one of these schemes will help you on to the property ladder sooner rather than later. * Different figures apply in London. www.helptobuy.gov.uk www.ownyourhome.gov.uk/scheme/starterhomes www.thebureauinvestigates.com/explainers/ what-is-affordable-housing-a-bureau-guide

So, why advertise in Local People Macclesfield? Our own team delivers every issue (10 of these each year!) DIRECTLY THROUGH the doors of nearly 24,000 homes and businesses, covering most of Macclesfield, Tytherington and the surrounding villages of Prestbury, Rainow, Sutton, Langley, Gawsworth and Henbury! We believe this to be the largest but most concentrated distribution of any other medium of its kind in the area. Additional copies are left at collection points in Chelford village plus Macclesfield library, Visitor Information Centre and train station. We have also incorporated our other magazine, Compass Wilmslow, into Local People on an interim basis and so are currently leaving even more copies at collection points only in Alderley Edge, Wilmslow and Bollington bi-monthly at no extra charge! We don’t do hard sell, we’re very easy to deal with, we will never, ever classify people according to letters of the alphabet, we work with you to get the best for your business, we can do simple artwork for you and don’t generally charge, we know the area well, we’ve been doing this for over 12 years now with well over 100 issues under our belts, there is a good value price to suit every business, what you see is what you get - and it works!! Phew!
