Well, a bumper issue this month and a whole range of stuff to amuse and interest you .. To start, we have a job opportunity on Page 5 up at Heaton House Farm in Rushton Spencer. There are some very interesting articles in this issue … if you are having trouble balancing life and work (and as I write, I haven’t left my desk for about four days so maybe I should take heed!!), read Kalini Kent’s article on Page 12. Kalini is passionate about her work so if you think you would like to investigate further, give her a ring. Danika Lloyd has written another historical piece for us on Page 22 …. seems that things haven’t changed much in 100 or so years!! And spooky to see the old Police House as it used to be, considering my lovely son lived there for a short time recently in the renovated version! Talking of my elder offspring, our Words and Pictures feature this month is about someone who had a very positive influence on him as he hurtled through his teenage years and coincidentally, we also feature an ad for a local business which similarly played a great part in his formative years. The connection - work it out - but all I can say is that Confucius was a very wise old soul!! Incidentally, when you work out which business it is, use it or lose it. Seriously. Plenty of new businesses this month as well so please support them. On a lighter note, Barnaby is on its way - see Page 33 for a chance to win some tickets! It will be great fun!! And if you are single and over 40, the chance for love beckons on Page 14!

Have a good month, Heather

Local People ‌ team of the month!

May's 'Team Of The Month' is from local school of dance, 'DANCE ADDICTS', which was established just three years ago in Macclesfield. In that short time, the team has grown from twelve to around a hundred regular members who train and compete in Freestyle Dance and Slow Dance. This team is incredibly diverse with members as young as 11 months of age, all the way through to adults. By working together, supporting each other and training regularly, the team have achieved remarkable standards of Freestyle and Slow Dance and have competed at local, national and international level, recently bringing home trophies from The British Olympics in Blackpool and winning droves of trophies at competitions around the country. The team are just starting to prepare their performances for the Barnaby festival and Geronimo festival this summer whilst training hard for a summer of competing against some of the best dancers in the UK and beyond. together with a wooden spoon until very pale and fluffy. Gradually beat in the egg and orange zest. Sift over the flour and baking powder and add the hazelnuts and chocolate chips. Knead on a lightly floured surface to a soft dough, adding a little more flour if the dough seems sticky. Divide the dough into two pieces and using lightly floured hands shape each to a 18cm x 8cm log. Place on the baking sheet, well spaced apart, and flatten each one slightly with the palm of your hands. Bake in the preheated oven for 20-25 minutes until firm and light golden. Remove the baking sheet from the oven and leave to cool for about 10 minutes. Carefully transfer the two logs to a chopping board. Use a serrated knife to cut each log on the diagonal into 9-10 slices. Return all the slices, cut-side down, to the baking sheet and bake for a further 10-15 minutes until crisp and golden brown. Transfer the biscotti to a cooling rack and leave to cool completely. They will keep in an airtight container for 2-3 weeks.

The Magnetism of Macclesfield Macclesfield has a unique ability to draw people in. Is it because of its enviable position in this beautiful landscape or is it the town’s rich cultural heritage that keeps us coming back for more? As local residents ourselves, we would say that it is the people of this well-loved town that draw us to it their northern, warm and welcoming nature that has us hooked! For Simon Heapy an avid season ticket holder of Macclesfield Town Football Club, the magnetism of Macclesfield is drawing him home after 12 years of working in the city centre of Manchester. We at Jobling Gowler are delighted to have Simon joining the Jobling Gowler team this May. Local People …. talks life balance

Communication and Drama specialist Kalini Kent is also a Parent and Youth Coach and will be writing an occasional series for LPM about common issues we all face – family relationships, coping with stress, transition and change, lack of confidence, bullying and conflict, and maybe other problems LPM readers wish to be tackled. In this issue she deals with how to identify priorities and set goals, with practical tools to help you find balance and fulfilment in life.

Is there a perfect balance?

The truth is that nothing ever achieves absolute balance so when we say “I need more balance”, what we are really referring to is the fact that we are focusing on one priority so something else that matters to us is being neglected. Hence we get feelings of being overwhelmed, not managing our time effectively; and common symptoms are letting things slip like quality time with loved ones, fitness regimes and sleep. Doing that for too long can be damaging. Life is a balancing act but the question of balance is really about priority and counterbalancing. When you focus on your priority you will automatically go out of balance, becoming totally absorbed in the task or project (eg work). The challenge is making sure you don’t neglect your priorities outside of work. So when at work you work, and when at home you focus on what is important at home. In order to achieve a balance, ideally you need to set aside time in the day to achieve a well-rounded involvement in all aspects of your life. It doesn’t mean an equal amount of time, but sufficient time. Pause for a moment now to consider the balance you currently have in your life and the balance you want to achieve. Sometimes it is difficult to work out what your priorities are and how to balance your time, so six months later you can be in the same situation with no progress. Priorities also change over time as circumstances change, e.g. children or new career. This is where it helps to identify goals properly, and what you want. An excellent process to help you identify priorities in your life and get clear about short, medium and long-term goals is as follows: ● Write down everything you want to BE (eg. doctor, ideal parent), DO (eg. travel, write a book), or HAVE (e.g. car, loving relationship). Write a positive sentence as to WHY you want to BE, DO or HAVE each item: “I want this because...” - and visualize it. The list will fall into different categories so choose the top eight most important to you – for many these are Family, Friends, Relationships, Work, Health, Social Life. ● The next important step is to identify where you are in your life at this point in time and assess your level of satisfaction in each area compared to how you would like it to be. An excellent tool for this is The ‘Wheel Of Life’ which helps you get clear about goals. See the example opposite and have a go at following the instructions. ● Once you have created your own personal Wheel, brainstorm at least three things you could do to move you one point closer to achieving 10 out of 10 for each area. ● Prioritise your ideas and decide the most useful/effective thing to do first and set yourself a time limit. Continue doing this until you have a plan of action including short, medium and long-term actions for each area, with time limits for each. Ultimately, to achieve life balance, your aim is to identify your priorities and work towards them, but not to forget to give sufficient time and attention to all of the areas that give you fulfilment and satisfaction. This process can help you identify your priorities and break the steps down into bite size chunks so as to help you achieve your goals whilst being mindful of all areas that are important to you. 12 To advertise with us, just call 01625 265551

The Wheel of Life

Wheel Of Life Instructions • In each of the areas, go forward to a point in time in which everything in this area of your life is as you want it to be. Visualise how it would look or feel if life was 10 out of 10 in that area and make a few notes. • Now looking at each area at this point in time, rank your level of satisfaction out of 10 where 1 is least satisfied and 10 is most satisfied. Draw a curved line. • Do this for each segment and you will see your own Wheel – the areas in your life with potential for growth and positive development. Is it a bumpy ride? • Does any area jump out as being out of balance? • What area is most important and needs most improvement?

A brand new Introduction Agency with the personal touch, for genuine singles over 40 in Cheshire … helping you find your ‘happy ever after’.

14

ADVERTISING FEATURE

Yes, we know it’s not February (the sun is beginning to shine through the rain though!) but LPM is very excited to be able to exclusively announce the launch of a brand new service designed to spread some love, happiness and friendship amongst local people who are genuinely single and over 40 …. L♥ve at First Date is a Cheshire based Matchmaking Service with its Head Office in Macclesfield. It is not an internet dating service but deals with its clients personally on a one-to-one basis in a strictly confidential and sensitive manner. No picture or private information is put out in the public domain which means no more trawling through endless photos (some OK, some too good to be true and some just souldestroying, as far as we can see!!), communicating with potential ‘matches’ who then turn out to live hundreds of miles away or who are completely different to what you have seen on screen, which only leads to inevitable disappointment and frustration. With L♥ve at First Date, you don’t even have to use a computer! There are no special criteria for our clients – you don’t have to be rich or do a certain type of job – just be nice, kind and friendly and over 40 years old! And genuinely single …. So, how does it work? L♥ve at First Date uses a ‘noncomputerised’ matching system and will take into consideration personality and individuality during the personal interview and search process.

To advertise with us, just call 01625 265551

It specialises in creating introductions that really work, by ensuring that members are introduced to potential partners, or even just companions, who share their priorities and lifestyles. MD of L♥ve at First Date, Dean Mottershead, told us, “The first step is to fill in our extensive questionnaire. After that, we will arrange for an informal, relaxed chat over a cup of tea in your home (usually takes around an hour) with our senior match maker when we will discuss in greater detail exactly what type of person you are looking for and if we can help you, although by now, we will have established such an in-depth personal profile that it should be very difficult not to find you a match somewhere along the line! If at this point, you feel confident that we can help you find that special someone and we like each other, you pay a one-off registration fee to join and agree to our T&C’s and monthly finder’s fee. Our consultants and our matching team then meet to discuss individual clients, taking into account all the details gleaned in the process so far, and once we have a few options for you, we will meet again to show you your potential matches. Even then, we don’t just leave you to it, but will hold your hand right up to the magical moment when you are holding that special person’s hand … even arriving with you on the first date to make sure everything goes smoothly.” Dean told me that they would anticipate finding a ‘match’ after only a few months searching (after all, you can’t hurry love!! Who said that?), but it can also happen that they have someone in mind straight away …. which would be fantastic! However, as they also realistically recognise that occasionally, the process may take a little longer than anticipated, they put a cap on the monthly fee after ten months. So, as a member of this unique introductory agency, all you really have to do is relax and prepare for those butterflies! Call L♥ve at First Date on 01625 687770 to request a questionnaire or more information, or download the online version from the website.

Is makeup really a mask to hide imperfections or to make them?

I have worn makeup for around 4 years, beginning with just the basic mascara found in my mum’s room. I started wearing makeup mainly due to the pressure of high school girls having to look ‘pretty’, but I soon realised when I found eyeliner and alternative music, the pressure to fit in wasn’t for me. I started to realise that wearing makeup, for me, wasn’t to hide faults or blemishes, it was out of enjoyment. I wore makeup because I simply loved waking up in the morning and being able to express myself through the colour of an eye shadow, or shape of my eyeliner. Later, I began to realise, out of my few hobbies, applying and experimenting with makeup was one of them. With my love for Halloween and other events I attended that involved dressing up, I soon realised my love for makeup special effects. I began with the basics of face painting, with the little supplies I had at home in my bedroom. I have a huge love for fantasy movies which inspired me massively to try and recreate my favourite characters. Since I started, I always have had a huge interest and passion for drawing almost everything, from my favourite characters to insects and flowers, so the artistic interest added to my love for media makeup. As I got older and went through different phases of interest, I began to collect different supplies for applying makeup, including: a bruise pallet, scar wax and liquid latex. I soon began experimenting with the little supplies I had, most of the time completely clueless messing, but eventually I began to get better and people began to notice. My mum began to notice as she entered my room to see her daughter with a gaping wound on her arm. I got told that my hobby of messing around with makeup was realistic and good! The praise and appreciation of the makeup I was doing made me want to do more. I began to get asked by my friends to do their makeup for events. I recreated burns, scars and wounds onto their faces, and again gained praise for my work. I then started to buy more expensive, completed face paints and other prosthetics and began to experiment with trying to create masks and facial prosthetics. I loved it, I loved that what I was creating has an impact on people, whether it’s making them cringe from the gore, or making them smile from the realism. My inspiration and influences came from watching videos on YouTube and researching other methods and tutorials on more advanced special effects such as animal snouts, blisters and detailed face paints. I soon began to build up skills on how to create certain things, but don’t get me wrong, I’m no expert. If anything, I’m far from it. So, when I learnt that colleges in my reach were available and did courses in media makeup, I was thrilled. I could do my hobby as a college course! I could learn new skills and learn about new equipment! I continue to keep up my hobby of theatrical makeup and hope that the future holds a career in it for me. But, for now, the next step is continuing and keeping up my hobby.

Local People … from the past

Danika Lloyd, family historian, from local company Family History Helpers will be kindly giving us an insight over the next few issues about what life was really like for local people of the past.

Law and Disorder in Macclesfield William Sheasby was Chief Constable of Macclesfield Borough Police Force for almost 30 years during the Victorian era. He had rather an eventful time as Chief of Police - he was at the head of a mounted police security force during a visit from the Duchess of Teck (GreatGrandmother of Queen Elizabeth II), who came to Macclesfield in 1895 to open a silk exhibition at the local School of Art. Throughout his career William dealt with many shocking cases including assaults, highway robberies, and murder. There were also illegal gambling gatherings, multiple cases of prisoners escaping from Macclesfield lock-ups, and a huge amount of drunk and riotous behaviour at a time when many people consumed more beer than water! William was aged 34 when he arrived in Macclesfield in 1874 from Coventry Police Force, he and his wife lived in Macclesfield for the Old Police Station rest of their lives and had 9 children, 6 of whom survived to adulthood. In 1882 an attempt was made on William’s own life. As William was leaving his home on Great King Street, Macclesfield, he was stabbed by a “mad shoemaker” who admitted that he wanted to “do for” Sheasby and said in court that if he had money he would have bought a revolver and shot him. William served as Chief Constable in Macc until his retirement in December 1903; he was presented with his portrait, a service plate, and 50 sovereigns by the Mayor of Macclesfield. William enjoyed 26 years of retirement, he died aged 89. None of William’s shocking and often seemingly terrifying experiences deterred his son Henry who was appointed Chief Constable of Macclesfield Borough Police Force in 1907 and retired in February 1942. William and Henry served as Chief Constable for 64 years collectively, more than half of the time that Macclesfield Borough Police existed. Henry Sheasby Macclesfield’s West Park Museum houses local history displays including items related to the history of local law enforcement alongside its renowned ancient Egyptian collection which belonged to the daughter of a Macclesfield mill owner and an impressive selection of works by local artist Charles Tunnicliffe. West Park Museum is open Tuesdays to Sundays 1:00pm to 4:00pm, free admission.

Five Years of The Hope Centre

On May 17th, the HOPE Centre celebrates five years of being a café like no other in Macclesfield! Situated on Park Green, in what used to be (for those of you with long memories) the Wesley Owen Christian Bookshop, the Hope Centre still sells Christian Books, music and gifts. However, enter the shop and the smell of delicious, fairly-traded ground coffee is in the air. Freshly prepared food is available all day, from satisfying soup to scrummy cakes – all served with a smile. The HOPE Centre is open Monday to Friday from 9:00 to 5:00, and Saturday from 9:00 to 4:00. Come in on the 17th May for a coffee and a specially made Birthday Biscuit! Managed by Christine Togneri, the Hope Centre is staffed by a team of volunteers from churches across the town, and further afield. As you walk into the HOPE Centre, as well as that delicious coffee, the first thing that you notice is the atmosphere, a haven of calm, a place where the elderly are not rushed, where children are welcome, a space to come with a group of friends or alone and be offered warmth. Though no-one will pressurise you if you are just browsing, if you need help in selecting a Bible or a special gift, one of the staff or volunteers will be pleased to help, and if it’s not in stock, many items can be ordered. People have time to listen, both volunteers and those who come into the HOPE Centre for just that purpose, to chat to those who are lonely or need to talk to someone; the Listening Service is an important part of the work of the HOPE Centre, again volunteers, with listening skills and God’s love to share and to spare. Over the years volunteers have gone on to paid work as a result of the confidence and experience they have gained at the HOPE Centre, and young people have worked towards the Duke of Edinburgh Award by helping in the café. The HOPE Centre is more than just a café and gift shop, it is the Church working together to share God’s love. To celebrate even more, there will be a special service at Macclesfield Methodist Church on 8th May at 3.00pm … with cake!

Thai Beef Salad Serves 4

Ready in 50 minutes, plus marinating time This colourful and fragrant main-meal salad is great for easy entertaining. Choose thick pieces of steak and take care not to overcook them or they will become tough and chewy.

Ingredients: • • • • • • • • • • •

2 x 175g sirloin steaks 1 tbsp lime juice 2 tbsp light soy sauce 1 garlic clove, peeled and crushed 1 tsp dried chilli flakes 6 spring onions, trimmed and thinly sliced 8 radishes, trimmed and thinly sliced 100g fresh bean sprouts 1/4 cucumber, thinly sliced 4 firm plum tomatoes, quartered 200g mixed salad leaves

FOR THE DRESSING • • • • •

juice of 2 limes 2 tbsp Thai fish sauce 2 tsp brown sugar 1 tbsp fresh chopped coriander 1 tsp finely chopped lemon grass

Place the steak in a shallow dish. Mix together the lime juice, soy sauce, garlic and chilli flakes. Season with freshly ground black pepper and cover and leave to marinate for 1 hour. Heat a cast iron skillet or griddle until very hot. Add the steak and cook for 4-6 minutes on each side. Remove from the pan, cover with foil and leave to rest for 15 minutes. Toss together the spring onions, radishes, bean sprouts, cucumber, tomatoes and salad leaves. Mix together all the dressing ingredients, stirring until the sugar has dissolved. Season with salt and freshly ground black pepper. Slice the warm steak thinly across the grain. Toss gently into the salad with the dressing. Pile into a large shallow serving dish and serve immediately, or leave to cool and serve chilled.

TIP Lemon grass stalks are sold in small packs

by the fresh herbs in the supermarket. You only need a small amount to give an extra zesty fragrance to the dressing but the stalks will keep for 1-2 weeks in the fridge. Try adding chopped to curries, fruit salads or infuse in hot water for a refreshing alternative to tea.

Macclesfield’s small magazine with the BIG circulation! Bridging the gap between local residents and local business for over 10 years now in a way which is “affordable, effective and popular”! Like it or not, advertising is NOT a dirty word!

As a business, you really need to do it because if people don’t know about you, or where you are, how can they use your services or products? What you need to decide is the best place to advertise for your particular advertising needs …. So why should you consider entrusting Local People to advertise your local business to a local readership if that is your particular target audience? x

x x

Using our own team of trusty distributers (so we always know who should be delivering where!), every issue of our little magazine goes directly through around 23,500 local doors - this larger than average, targeted local distribution actually covers most of Macclesfield, Tytherington, Prestbury, Rainow, Sutton, Langley, Gawsworth and Henbury! We also leave copies in the Town Hall VIC, the library, the railway station and in Chelford village and then every other month, we leave copies for readers to collect in Wilmslow, Alderley Edge and Bollington. Up to an extra 1,500 copies! We offer advertising packages for all budgets, with ads starting at less than £30+vat per issue right up to double page spreads and premium pages. We will always advise you for your particular needs, not what brings us in the most money, just don’t do hard sell and we think we are quite nice to do business with! By including interesting editorial and other content, we ensure the magazine isn’t just full of ads which ensures that it - and your ad - is kept until the next one appears. No cat litter here! We can deliver leaflets alongside the mags, we can help with artwork (usually for free) and it seems to work because advertisers stay with us issue after issue! We’ve been doing this for over 10 years now, are local residents ourselves, so know what’s what and who’s who! Most importantly, it works! We know that because many of our advertisers have been with us for years, so that says it all!

WIN tickets to

"The Astronomer's Story", the family adventure at the heart of 'Space' themed Barnaby Festival! Barnaby is back from Friday 17 to Sunday 26 June with 100 events over ten days, many of them free. There's a special focus on families with a major production commissioned by Barnaby for Christ Church. 'La Lune' is made up of different elements over several days, dreamt up by award-winning, Macclesfield-based Wild Rumpus CIC. The adventure begins with The Astronomer's Story, a 45 minute theatre show where the actors use puppetry, lighting and stage sets to transform Christ Church into the secret laboratory of an eccentric astronomer. John Herschel has finally succeeded in his greatest ever mind-boggling experiment - to bring the moon and the stars down to Macclesfield! But all is not well - he has put the town in peril. Maxonians are called upon to work together to save the town! The show runs throughout Saturday 18 and Sunday 19 June, tickets £6 for SK10/SK11 residents (£8 for others) from www.barnabyfestival.org.uk.

The rest of La Lune is free The Observatory (a grand 'space' themed fete on Christ Church lawns), The Roving Moon (spot it moving across rooftops) and the dramatic finale, The Moon Rising, at dusk on Saturday 25 June.

Local People are delighted to have two pairs of tickets for The Astronomer's Story to give away! Just answer these questions: (1) What does ‘La Lune’ mean? (2) What is the scientist's name? Full details and all tickets at www.barnabyfestival.org.uk To enter the competition, send your name, address and telephone number plus the answers to the questions by post or email to Local People at the addresses on Page 3.

Please do not contact Barnaby organisers direct. Answers should be with us by 27th May and no correspondence will be entered into. Editors decision is final. Personal details will not be used for any purpose other than the competition.

For this month’s issue, Simon and I went along to talk to John Hartshorn, a distinctive figure around town who is usually to be spotted at the head of some parade or other wielding a whistle and a drum stick and attempting to recreate a South American beat on the streets of Macclesfield. A slightly difficult concept to imagine but he generally succeeds!! We met at ArtSpace on Heapy Street – but more about that later! I have known John personally for over 10 years so it wasn’t so much of a formal interview, more of a chat, but he did fill in some gaps in an eclectic and inspiring background! John has had a prestigious career in youth work, both in Leicestershire and Cheshire, finally building up and working for 10 years with a Manchester based charity for homeless young people. Along the way, he would introduce samba sessions into his work as an activity but gradually, it turned into a passion of a hobby and for 20 years now, John has been bringing samba to parades and carnivals all over the place. This interest in carnivals and parading evolved over the years, culminating in making giant puppets and floats and what’s more, helping others to make them and introduce them into processions. He started doing this for our own Barnaby celebration some 5 years ago now which led him to becoming Artistic Director. John is married to Salli Ward and they now run their own charity and small business consultancy, Hartshorn and Ward Help. Between them, they successfully merged their 8 children into one blended family, living either in Macclesfield or Manchester in turn over the years! As most of the children were musically gifted, it seemed natural to get them singing and playing together, incorporating boyfriends and girlfriends along the way, and then generally widening the circle to create musical opportunities for young people to play in bands (and indeed, my son was one of those young people!! ). John also brought his samba skills and enthusiasm into schools, particularly Henbury as was, and got young people involved and motivated - who were then happy to pass on that enthusiasm during that very first, torrentially wet Barnaby parade!! Now John and Salli’s ‘children’ have all finished uni and fled the nest, not surprisingly all, except John’s daughter who has gone into fashion, have gone on to make their careers in either music or the theatre. After they had indeed all moved out, John and Salli sold their house … and moved aboard a narrow boat! You may even have seen them a couple of years ago, taking part in the TV show, “May the Best House win”! Or in their case, boat!! They now lead their busy lives as “continuous cruisers”, moving around the country and ferrying their car back and forth to their latest mooring as the mood and music takes them!! So although technically John is not always resident in Macclesfield, this is where he calls home!! 40 To advertise with us, just call 01625 265551

The need for always “borrowing” space to carry out his various roles, in particular constructing floats and practising samba, led John and Salli to be instrumental in setting up “ArtSpace” some two and a half years ago now. ArtSpace is a community arts charity run entirely by volunteers and is based at the top of Sutton Mill on Heapy Street in Macclesfield. After an uncertain start, they have now secured funding for the foreseeable future but have set up “Friends of ArtSpace” which helps pay the rent along with doing a lot of fundraising themselves to keep the centre active. And what a place! It was my first visit, but I was overwhelmed at the amount of resources which are available for anyone to use - and all without charge! John told us that individuals and companies donate ‘stuff’ which is neatly stored for others to use in their projects – wood, fabric, wool, paint, etc, and a whole host of unusual objects, including colanders, dustbins, fancy frames, etc, in fact, anything which people can turn into ‘art’. ArtSpace is open almost every day at different times and it is a shared space for anyone to get on with any project of their own or join in with common projects. There is a dedicated sewing room with modern machines, a workshop with tools to use for carpentry and metalwork, an digital art room, a playspace, craft materials, painting and drawing materials … and most importantly, a café area. There is nearly always an artist or two around for advice and John proudly told us that they usually have around 200 visits a month from local people, also welcoming people with learning difficulties, minor mental health problems or older people who may be feeling isolated. It is open to all and everyone is equal. Further details are on the website www.macclesfieldcommunityartspace.com or the Facebook page. Simon has filmed a virtual tour of ArtSpace at www.stun360.com/artspace.html On Tuesdays John is on duty at ArtSpace from 12noon until 9pm. He calls it ‘Creative Tuesday’ or his Barnaby Parade Workshop! Any group can come in, get ideas and advice, materials or just some space to work on their entry to the parade … and there is still time to secure your place for the parade on 18th June between 1 and 2pm. Just ring or email John, sambajohn1@yahoo.com. He reminded us that this year’s theme is “Space” …. To be interpreted as you will! Could be space as we know it, science fiction or even an abstract notion of space. Be as imaginative as you will!! Obviously Darth and friends are featuring large but plenty of unusual entries as well! Now you know, you can look out for John leading his band of merry drummers on the day! Thanks John!

Dotted amongst all the familiar names around town, there are an increasing number of sales boards popping up bearing the name of a “new kid on the block”. Or is it? Silk Property has been established by Simeon Rains who was born and raised and also lives in Macclesfield. He himself has over 30 years’ experience in the estate agency and property industry but if you are thinking the name sounds familiar, you would be right as Simeon comes from a family synonymous with the property business and for over 145 years, generations of his family have provided estate agency and auctioneering services throughout Cheshire. Silk Property is providing a comprehensive range of estate agency and property related services in and around the Macclesfield area. But what is so different about Silk Property? Simeon explained that his aim is to provide a proactive and service focused agency which will offer a modern and professional service at a fair and competitive fee by reducing ineffective overheads and complacent attitudes using his experience and his knowledge of the area. His aim is to provide the best advice and guidance in order to best represent his clients’ interests. He is striving to deliver a different experience to the mainstream and to place the emphasis on service and attention to detail. Silk Property is a modern estate agency which is creative and innovative and utilises only the most efficient and effective tools in order to deliver the best possible results at the best possible price.

The Grass Can Be Greener by Pippa Greenwood It’s the time of year when things are starting to look lush and green, and beds and borders are beginning to come into their own. But does your lawn spoil it all by looking like a rather motheaten patchwork quilt? Or maybe you don’t have a lawn but think it would be great to possess one of those beautiful green surfaces in the centre of your garden? Whether you have decided your old lawn is well past its best or you want to create one from scratch, it is the perfect time to get started, and turf should still be available from specialist suppliers or garden centres. PreParing the site If you want a new lawn, it is essential to get the site properly prepared. It takes time and effort, but every moment you spend is well worthwhile. Start by removing all weeds, large stones, debris and any old grass or lawn, then dig or fork over thoroughly to remove all taproots of weeds. If the area is really weed infested or covered with old lawn, then most people opt to

kill this off with a weedkiller based on glyphosate. Then, once all the plant matter has died off, you can strip it away or dig it in. On sandy soils, incorporate some organic matter to improve moisture retention, while on very heavy soils it is often worth digging in grit and organic matter to improve drainage.

which may look superb but will take an awful lot more maintenance and be a good deal less hardwearing. Spending that little bit extra usually pays - cheaper turf often contains weeds and sometimes pests or diseases, or simply does not contain a good grass mixture in the first place.

Next, firm the whole area by treading it over evenly - walking over the site with fairly flat-soled boots is all you need to do. Once done, rake thoroughly with a garden rake and remove any stones or other debris which comes to the surface. Gently tread down the area again if raking makes it uneven.

Always buy the turf or arrange to have it delivered just when you need it, as storage never does it any good. If you do need to store it however, you can usually do this for a couple of days. The turves can remain rolled up for up to 24 hours, but for any longer than this unroll as soon as they are delivered and lay them out flat, grass side upwards, preferably on paving or plastic sheeting. Make sure that you keep them regularly watered and lay them as soon as possible.

Buying turf Always choose a reputable supplier and make sure that the turf you buy is suitable for the use you have in mind – some, especially those including lots of dwarf ryegrass, are much tougher than others, while some contain a seed mixture especially put together to make it suitable for use in shade. Others produce a ‘bowling green’ effect,

Laying the turf It is essential that you lay your turves closely together and do not allow the edges to overlap. Make sure that the joins on each row are staggered (like bricks in a wall), as this will give an even Continued on Page 48

finish. Starting at one side, lay the first row of turf using the adjacent path or lawn edging to form a straight line which you can work to. Roll out each turf carefully so that the edge of one abuts onto its neighbour. Lay the next row of turves, again ensuring that the long edges of each abut onto the long edges of the previous row. To avoid damaging the first row lay a plank over it which you can kneel on to lay the second row. Continue like this over the whole area until your new lawn is in position. Of course no lawn is ever exactly the right size to fit the turf length, so if you need a small section of turf to complete a row, add this in the middle of a row rather

than at the end, as this will make it less likely to be dislodged or to dry out. If you want a curved edge to your lawn, lay the turves so that they overlap the new lawn edge and then cut them to shape using a half moon edger or a sharp border spade. When finished, gently tamp the area over using the back of a rake and if any turves sink in then carefully lift them and place some extra soil underneath until they are level. Finally, brush in a mixture of horticultural sand and finely sieved soil over the surface, taking care to ensure that any tiny gaps between the turves are filled in. Care and maintenanCe As soon as the turf is in position, gently water it using

a sprinkler, ensuring that this first watering allows the water to penetrate right down to the root level. If it doesn’t rain frequently then you will need to water your lawn on a regular basis, particularly for the first couple of months whilst the roots are getting established. In the meantime try to avoid walking on it too much and in no time at all you will have a gorgeous lawn to be proud of. Home & Interiors Spruce Up Your Home Office

Dodgy desk, awkward chair or overflowing shelves? It’s time to give your home office a facelift, says Katherine Sorrell We all need some sort of working space at home, whether it’s a corner of the kitchen that’s used for occasional catching up with emails or a high-spec office with all the bells and whistles necessary for full-time self-employment. But is yours really working hard for you? Just a few small improvements will go a long way in making your workspace more comfortable, functional and attractive. It may sound obvious, but a good place to start is with a clear out and a tidy up.

Chances are, you don’t really need all that stuff you’ve accumulated. Take the time to go through your old paperwork, stationery, books and other bits and pieces; give it away, recycle it, file it away somewhere well out of the way or put it in the bin, as appropriate, and you’re bound to create a great deal of extra space. Then, pay attention to any messy and inconvenient cabling, and sort it out with extension leads, cable clips or even by asking an electrician to add an extra double plug socket in a handy place. Doesn’t that feel better already? Next: your desk. If you are still running out of room, you could consider adding a small worktop to one side of your existing desk (an

L-shaped workspace can be very ergonomic). Alternatively, it’s likely that you could dramatically improve your organisation with a new desk that incorporates drawers, cubby holes, shelves or whatever other type of storage you most need. If you are able to use nearby walls, try to lift as much as possible off the surface of your desk by introducing wall-mounted storage such as shelves, pin boards, peg boards (very trendy), hanging racks and the like. Anything that stacks is bound to be useful, too. Before you know it, you’ll be able to see your laptop once again. Most of us never have quite enough storage, and that probably goes for home offices more than any other space in the house. If you’re looking to buy more storage, you may be happy with a conventional filing cabinet and/or bookcase, but don’t be afraid to look beyond the usual office suppliers: vintage and industrial pieces can really come into their own here, adding an element of unexpected style that will really brighten up your work time. Add boxes, baskets, trolleys, racks and desktop accessories in colours and textures that suit your space and emphasise your personal style. Thinking along these lines, if space isn’t the problem, but Continued on Page 52

boring looks are, then why not get out the paintbrush and give everything a facelift? Stick to neutrals if you wish (they are undeniably good for concentration) but go for bold colours if they make you happy. Blackboard paint is a great option for sections of walls where you might want to chalk up some notes; it comes in a range of colours (not just black) and can even be used on the top of a desk or for cupboard fronts. And there’s also nothing to stop you replacing a boring window treatment with pretty curtains or blinds, or adding an eye-catching rug, a display of collectibles or a dramatic painting or framed photograph. A comfortable chair is a must for any working area, and if

FENSA Registered Company

you are likely to spend hours in it then an adjustable office chair on castors is the best choice. If yours is dull or ugly, it might be possible to either re-upholster it or make a loose cover; at worst, you could hang a length of fabric over the back and add an attractive cushion. Another essential is a good desk light – beyond being bright and adjustable, simply choose one that you love the look of. There’s an enormous choice out there, at prices to suit every budget. Finally, pay attention to the details and add accessories to brighten up your life, from a good-looking waste bin to a house plant, some colourful wall art or a scented candle. Let’s face it, the more you enjoy being at work, the more productive you’ll be.

Image above - Personalise your workspace (and provide a handy magnetic storage wall, too) with this Cockatiel printed magnetic wallpaper, £64.50, Sisters Guild; www.sistersguild.co.uk. Image Left - A good desk is essential. The new Phineas desk is made from oak and has two cubby holes, drawers, and a cut-out for cables. It costs £545 from Loaf, tel 0845 468 0698; www.loaf.com

We are always looking for people to go on our waiting list for distribution rounds .. we need reliable, fit, trustworthy people, preferably with own transport. Ideal for retired people!

So, why advertise in Local People Macclesfield? Our own team delivers every issue (10 of these each year!) DIRECTLY THROUGH the doors of around 23,500 homes and businesses, covering most of Macclesfield, Tytherington and the surrounding villages of Rainow, Sutton, Langley, Gawsworth, Henbury and now Prestbury too! We believe this to be the largest but most concentrated distribution of its kind in the area. Additional copies are left at collection points in Chelford village plus Macclesfield library, Visitor Information Centre and train station. We are currently also incorporating our other magazine, Compass Wilmslow, into Local People on an interim basis and thus leaving even more copies at collection points only in Alderley Edge, Wilmslow and Bollington bi-monthly at no extra charge! We don’t do hard sell, we’re very easy to deal with, we will never, ever classify people according to letters of the alphabet, we work with you to get the best for your business, we can do simple artwork for you and don’t generally charge, we know the area well, we’ve been doing this for over 10 years now with over 100 issues under our belts, there is a good value price to suit every business, what you see is what you get and it works!!
