Be Your Own Interior Designer

Fired Earth offers a design service for bathrooms and kitchens (0845 293 8798; firedearth.com).

It can be a tricky business, interior designing. There’s much more to it than pretty colours and nice cushions. Creating a successful space involves a complex blend of practical and aesthetic considerations, from flooring that’s hard-wearing and looks great to lighting that illuminates the right areas and helps create an appropriate mood. As well as the nitty gritty of wiring and plumbing, there’s wallpaper, paint colours and fabric to select, window treatments to decide on, storage to incorporate, furniture to choose and finishing touches to arrange. How can you ensure that you do it correctly? Never fear: it’s simply a question of taking things step by step, using a straightforward, logical approach. As all professional interior designers know, careful planning is invaluable in helping firm up your ideas, work out your budget and

Whether you’re planning a room from scratch or freshening up an existing scheme, it can be hard to know where to start. The answer is to think like a professional, says Katherine Sorrell

timetable and, above all, avoid expensive mistakes. So before you rush in with your paintbrush, spend a little time with some graph paper, a sharp pencil, scissors and swatches. They really are the secret to successful interior design. First comes space planning. Measure your room accurately and draw a plan to scale on graph paper, marking in windows, doors, fireplaces, fitted cupboards, pipes, radiators, plug sockets, light fittings and so on. Consider the room’s size and shape, and its architectural style. Will they affect the way in which you decorate? Are there special considerations, such as lack of space or light, or an important original feature? At this stage, consider whether it would be helpful to move a wall, pipe or radiator, enlarge a window, hang the door the other way around or add extra plug sockets or light switches. Perhaps you can

conceal wiring or pipework, or build in some extra storage? Once you have gone through all the options – consulting a structural engineer if your changes are major ones – you can draw up a final plan. Next, plan the positions of major items of furniture. On a separate sheet of graph paper, sketch the approximate shapes of your furnishings, as if you were looking at them from above, using the same scale as your room plan. Then simply cut them out, place them on your master plan and assess how well they fit in to the space, ensuring that you allow enough activity room between and around them. Think about who uses the room, when and how. On a practical level, is it going to work? Move your ‘furniture’ around as necessary and, eventually, the optimum arrangement will become apparent. You should now have the basics FRQWLQXHG RQ 3DJH Ăƒ

of a functional, comfortable room. To complement the floorplan and ensure that all the decorative elements of a room work together, professional designers create a ‘sample board’: a visual memo of all the different pieces that go towards making up the room. Before you start, you’ll need to find some images – printed off websites, cut out of magazines or brochures, or your own photographs or sketches – of your proposed furniture, flooring, lighting and accessories, as well as swatches of fabric, wallpaper and paint. Try to keep the samples in proportion to the size they’ll be in real life, so

that a curtain fabric swatch is much larger than, say, one representing a cushion. You can also include small real items (or parts of them) such as tie-backs and trims, rope or timber. Your sample board can be highly representative or, perhaps, more of a suggestion of general colours and styles – it’s up to you. Then, take a large piece of neutral-coloured card as a base, and arrange the images or swatches on it. It helps if you place the samples roughly in accordance with where they will be in the room – flooring at the bottom, pendant lights near the top and furniture in the middle, for example. With all the ingredients together, you’ll have a really

effective overview of how colours, patterns, shapes and textures work together, and can easily move things around, take them away or add to them. Are there too many smooth textures or is there too much of one colour? Do your patterns clash or your furniture styles jar? With a well thought-out sample board you can easily assess the overall effect. Paint swatches to the right show colours by Mylands (020 8670 9161; coloursoflondon.co.uk). Top to bottom: Burlington Arcade no 216, Eaton Square no 232 and Bloomsbury no 267, ÂŁ28.12 for 2.5l traditional emulsion. By Katherine Sorrell

Cake and Bake Bakewell Tart Modern commercial versions of the Bakewell Tart are easily found in most supermarket cake departments, but they are generally oversweet with a stodgy texture. This home-made Bakewell Tart is well worth the effort then, being light, crumbly and full of flavour.

Ingredients: • 1 packet shortcrust pastry • 200g raspberry jam • 175g butter, room temperature • 175g caster sugar • 4 large eggs • 2 dessertspoons lemon juice • 1 teaspoon lemon zest • 1 dessertspoon almond extract • 250g ground almonds • 60g flaked almonds

1. 2.

Preheat the oven to 190°C/170°C (fan)/Gas mark 5. Grease either a round dish (28cm diameter) or an oblong tin (20 by 30cm) with soft butter. You can also put some greaseproof paper in the bottom of the dish, to help the finished tart come out if you want to serve onto a plate before cutting. 3. Roll out the pastry until it’s fairly thin and then put into the dish or tin, trimming off the excess pastry. 4. Cover the base of the pastry case with greaseproof paper and then blind bake for 15 minutes by covering the paper with ceramic beans or dried pulses. 5. Remove the paper and beans from the baked pastry, then return to the oven for a further 5 minutes until the pastry is golden. When the pastry case has cooled, spread the jam evenly over the base. 6. In a mixing bowl, beat the butter and sugar together until fluffy. Whisk the eggs in a jug then gradually add to the mixing bowl, beating as you go. 7. Add the lemon juice, lemon zest and the almond extract, then gently fold in the ground almonds. 8. Spoon the mixture evenly into the case and gently spread to the sides of the dish. 9. Sprinkle the flaked almonds over the top and bake in the preheated oven for 30-35 minutes until the filling is golden on top and feels firm in the middle. 10. Remove and allow to cool for 15 minutes before serving.

Accident lawyers often get a bad press

..

They are frequently described as ‘Ambulance Chasers’ and daytime TV is littered with adverts encouraging people to make claims for injuries. How often have you received an unsolicited text or phone call urging you to make a claim when you haven’t even had an accident! In April 2013 the Government cracked down on what it saw as the ‘compensation culture’ and fraudulent or over exaggerated claims. Lawyers could no longer pay to get work in by paying referral fees and fees were slashed to discourage claims being made at all.

But what if you are unfortunate enough to have a serious accident through no fault of your own, perhaps on the road, at work or by tripping or falling? What if that injury results in permanent damage to the brain, limbs or internal organs? What if it prevents you from working again or doing a job you loved and had trained for? What if you can no longer look after yourself and need help from family? What if your accident is so serious that it changed your life and that of your family forever?

If you are in that position, then you need a solicitor who knows what they are doing. You need a solicitor who cares about your claim and will do their

utmost to bring it to a successful conclusion and will give you the support you will need through that process. x x x x x

The solicitors at -REOLQJ *RZOHU are not ambulance chasers. We are all very experienced lawyers who know how to deal with the most complex of cases. We are proud to say that we have never paid referral fees. Our clients come to us on recommendation. Your claim is always dealt with by a solicitor of over 15 years’ experience. We will see you face to face whether that be at your home, in hospital or at our offices so that the fullest instructions can be taken from you to maximise your claim.

You have the right to choose your solicitor In spite of what some clients are told by their insurers, under Human Rights Law you are entitled to choose an expert solicitor that is local to you. -REOLQJ *RZOHU Solicitors are your local experts.

What our clients say One of our clients was very grateful he transferred to us. His first solicitors thought that it was a modest case but it turned out that not only was it a serious injury as a result of a road traffic accident but that the hospital then failed to detect the spinal fractures. It was a long fight but eventually we got ÂŁ1million of compensation for our client “Thank you so much for all you have done, and especially for believing in me when others didn’t. The bungalow is going to make such a difference in our lives and this is due to your hard workâ€? 24

BUY TO LET UPDATE FOR MACCLESFIELD

With other investments offering a low percentage return at present and with house prices set to rise in the coming year, buy-to let investment appears to be an attractive prospect for 2014. Increasingly, investors are realising that savings in the bank might produce a better return if invested in buy to let property. In the days of the buy to let boom in the 1990’s, buy to let investors were attracted by the potential for capital growth in the property market and were happy for rents to cover the mortgage as they watched the equity in the property grow. Now experts agree that in the coming 3-5 years buy to let investors will see capital growth once again. But with interest rates low and nervousness about the stock market, investors are primarily looking at the percentage rental yield they can achieve from a buy to let property which, with the right investment, can be 7% or more. Many of the enquiries we get from potential tenants are from people wanting to live in the centre of Macclesfield. Thinking about this, we decided to dig a bit deeper and look at the statistics. We investigated the area that extends roughly from Oxford Rd to the Silk Road and from Chester Road to South Park. We were amazed to see that, for many years this central area of Macclesfield has been a top performer in the private rental market. Back in 2001, when across the country 9.9% of households were private renters, Macclesfield town centre had 17% of households renting from private landlords. By 2011 the national figure was growing, with 16% of households in privately rented accommodation. However the figure for Macclesfield town centre had risen to a staggering 28% of households. In that time the housing stock in that part of town has kept in step with the national average with an increase of 9.9%. So, we wondered, how does that compare with other areas, which might be thought of as good places to invest in rental property. In both Bollington and central Wilmslow the number of private renters has kept in step with national averages, seeing a steady rise up to 17% in Bollington and just 15.6% in Wilmslow. Rental returns in Macclesfield are, on average 20% higher than in Wilmslow. So Macclesfield town centre looks like a good buy to let investors bet. But not every property is right for the rental market and it is always wise to talk to rental specialists to find out what will achieve the best return. Belvoir - our front cover advertiser ...

Socialising Online: The virtual world of friends, groups, and lovers by James Smith http://jamessmithwriter.wordpress.com The popularity of social networking has exploded over the last decade and is now used by many as a way to meet people for business, to share a special interest, for friendship, or even love. The ability to connect with other people via the Internet, started to go beyond email when Bulletin Board Systems (BBS) or ‘forums’ started appearing in the 1980s and 90s. Although rudimentary, these systems allowed people to connect and exchange interests and ideas in the same way that one would by posting messages on a community notice board or placing notices in periodicals and newsletters. These early, and rather limited, systems were the forerunners to the social networking giants of today, such as Facebook, Twitter, and LinkedIn. The unique feature of these ‘virtual meeting places’ is their ability to make geographical distance insignificant. So, if you’re a dressmaker based in Fairbanks, Alaska, you can hook up with someone with similar interests in Tasmania and exchange ideas with little expense, and without taking a

flight around the globe. The hugely successful social network, LinkedIn, is aimed at business and forges relationships between professionals worldwide. This means that face-to-face meetings are often redundant, even when significant business decisions and transactions are at stake. Yes, it’s a less personal way of doing business, but no one can deny that it’s quicker and more efficient: use of technology for business relationships is here to stay. But what about today’s way of connecting with likeminded people to share a common interest? Websites such as Facebook enable you not only to connect with friends and family, but also to join and create ‘groups’. This has resulted in a mass of specialist groups being formed, representing the most diverse interests and tastes imaginable. Everything from movies and book clubs to political activists and heavy rock bands are catered for. Drawing benefit from these groups and networks, however, requires real effort

to engage and develop anything that could be considered a relationship. Indeed, you may find that you have gathered many virtual friends, but little tangible evidence to show for it. In this sense, it is like any club or society: the more effort and commitment you put in, the benefits you will reap. In social networking terms, this may translate into uploading interesting photographs, writing blogs, providing advice, or news snippets. In this way, you become known as an active contributor, people find your input of value, and relationships develop amongst the virtual community with the common shared interest. But it’s not all virtual. The site meetup.com brings together people with common interests who live in the same area. Singles clubs, dog walkers, motorbiking and coffee lovers are amongst thousands of groups available to join – or launch one of your own. In these cases, the real benefits are often realised after the event, when users return to their homes or places of work and upload photos

and comments to the online user group for everyone to enjoy. Of course a cautious approach should be undertaken before making the transition from the virtual world to meeting people physically in the outside world. And what of more serious relationships nurtured online? The landscape of virtual relationships has opened up and spawned a massive industry of dating sites (in the UK alone, over 1400), some for singles looking to connect for companionship that could lead to a more serious date, others that combine the need for common interest groups with single people also looking for romantic connections. There is undoubtedly a seedy side to this world, and one should

draw a clear distinction between ‘escort services’ and ‘dating agencies’. However many dating sites have very high standards of security, and vet their members to ensure safe and responsible use. It’s now a fact that people do meet via these sites and foster long-term loving relationships. And whatever stigma may exist with this initial form of contact, for many, it offers a preferable alternative to remaining isolated or hanging around noisy bars or nightclubs. The web even seems to have the capability to evolve new types of relationships. For busy professionals not looking for love, but for a companion at conferences and business-related social

functions, professional ‘non-sexual’ escort services are available for both men and women. Naturally, these services raise ageold stereotypes, and often misconceptions, about the process of paying for any type of relationship. But this is a changing landscape, and such barriers are being broken down by the Internet. Whatever one feels about the value of a ‘virtual relationship’, many are benefitting from the Internet’s enormous reach and ability to connect people across social and geographical divides. Despite the clear dangers, and precautions that must be taken, there is no doubt that valid business relationships, real friendships, and even love, can now all be found online.

An Alternative Viewpoint ‌‌

Welcome to the second of our short series by Elizabeth Curphey, Registered Osteopath, Osteopath, and Mark Guggiari, Acupuncturist, Acupuncturist, of The Therapy Rooms in Macclesfield, sharing with you their experiences of how osteopathy and acupuncture can offer an alternative method of treating some common health concerns.

How to beat the winter blues – taking care of you and your family

Winter is a tough time for parents. The winter months are the time when young children and babies are most likely to suffer from troublesome and recurrent coughs, colds, ear infections and viruses. This can mean sleepless nights for the whole family and it can be especially tiring if you have more than one child who is ill at once.

How can our treatment help?

Babies and toddlers are particularly vulnerable to illnesses as their immune system is still developing but older children often become quite poorly too. Osteopathy and acupressure can really benefit children by helping them to not only get over their illnesses more quickly, but also by improving their health generally to make them less susceptible to illness.

Why might a child need it?

Elizabeth and Mark can treat the child’s current complaint, and also look to their future health by helping to make sure their bodies are working as well as possible. In small children the immune system can become overwhelmed by a series of infections and because it isn’t yet strong enough to fight off all the infections the child will keep getting ill. Treatment may help to improve how their body deals with illness and infection, so allowing them to stay healthy.

What does treatment involve?

Elizabeth takes a holistic approach and uses very gentle manipulation to treat children. Mark uses acupressure rather than any needles. Acupressure involves tapping of the acupuncture points. Another technique called Korean Hand Therapy works in a similar way to reflexology. It is a gentle relaxing treatment which the children enjoy.

Why choose the Therapy Rooms?

Both therapists have a successful track record in treating children. Elizabeth is particularly interested in helping children and is currently studying for a specialist diploma in Paediatric Osteopathy. Elizabeth and Mark are always happy to talk to parents about how their treatments may help babies and children, so for more information take a look at our website

Local People - A Teenage Perspective ‌...

A small group of students from various year groups at Macclesfield Academy meets regularly to discuss ideas, work together and support each other as writers. Our articles look at life from a sometimes refreshingly different perspective! This month, a very perceptive piece by Maxwell Gilliver ‌.

What do you see? What do you see when you walk down the street? When you look across the road and see someone standing at a corner, what do you think of them? However you put it, we all judge. When we see a stranger around the town we immediately start questioning who they are; what clothes are they wearing, what shoes do they have on, even down to how they style their hair, it all gets stirred together in our minds and we end up brewing a concoction with a rather bitter taste. So, why do we do it? We don’t know them, for all we know they could be a prince. So what happens inside our head when we suddenly decide what they are like and judge them? You can’t stop yourself from doing it. No matter if you view yourself as a saint, you will always make judgements about the people you see. Just think for a second about yourself. Think about your friends or your colleagues and remember back to when they first started talking to you. What went through your mind? Did you think they were weird? Un-sociable? Cruel? I can guarantee that you weren’t immediately attached to them. You may have liked them, but you would not have been attached to them. You looked at their outward appearance and made assumption after assumption, slowly analysing who they are, splitting them up and picking out their features. However, we can’t help it. It’s a horrible thing, and it’s something no one wants to do, but in the end there is nothing we can do about it. So, does that make it right? There is no definite answer as it’s not our fault, but it’s something we should try to avoid. However, at the end of the day, initial judgments don’t mean a thing; it’s the follow-up that counts. If we see someone, decide on who they are and then stick to it we never really get to know anything about them. We never learn who they truly are, and we never find out what’s inside them, compared to what you see on the outside. But most importantly we miss out on the opportunity to meet someone who could really change our lives. As Teenagers we fight battle after battle, against education, society, and the ones who wish to undermine us. And in this seemingly hopeless war, there is one weapon we sometimes take for granted, friendship. We don’t always think of our friends as being anything special as they just seem to be there. But what would we be without them? They are the ones who didn’t continue their judgments of us, and they are the ones who have stayed by our side.

(just in case, for anyone lucky enough, it being February …..)

Paris off the beaten track By Solange Hando Beyond the grand boulevards and iconic monuments, the French capital has a few secret places known only to the Parisians. Who wants to join the crowds on the river Seine when Canal St Martin beckons with an air of countryside? Here, fishermen doze on the banks, boats glide through the locks and ancient bridges and traditional inns mingle their reflections. You can cruise on emerald waters, cycle or walk on the tow path or join the Tai Chi adepts moving in slow motion under the chestnut trees. Just a stone’s throw away, you reach La Villette, a futuristic park where the great Géode cinema sphere complements a Science Museum and Cité de la Musique. All around is a maze of elevated walkways and bright red follies sprouting like toadstools among immaculate lawns. There are curving stone seats with incorporated lights, fountains and jade-coloured pools, a bamboo grove and a 19th century cattle shed turned into a cultural venue. La Villette is only one of many parks in Paris barely visited by the tourists. On a sunny afternoon, families, young lovers and old folk flock to the

scenic Buttes de Chaumont, well worth the climb for the views right across the capital to the Sacré-Cœur Basilica. You couldn’t dream of a more restful place with valleys and lawns and weeping willows tumbling down to the waterfall and man-made lake. But what can you do with a viaduct when trains no longer run on it? Paris is not just a glamorous face, it’s creative. Imagine scores of pink brick archways glowing in the light, stretching along a plane tree avenue, each one converted into a glassfronted boutique or workshop, plus a pavement café or two, and you have the elegant ‘Viaduc des Arts’, a treasure trove of painted furniture and restored antiques, old maps, wrought iron, brass, paintings, sculptures, picture frames and period costumes hand-sewn for the stage. But the planners went one step further, creating a hanging garden along the track with water features and lavender hedges and, at times, plunging views over the streets, heading all the way to the Bois de Vincennes. With its boating lake, its wild woodlands and floral gardens, Vincennes is the perfect escape. Here, the Parisians

play pétanque, sunbathe in lush meadows or ramble through the forest, picking blackberries or looking out for squirrels and birds. The rural atmosphere of Vincennes is no secret but here and there in the capital are other village-like areas. Look out for the tree-lined rue de Mouzaia where bright façades recall the southern sun even on a winter day and villas with tiny rose gardens climb up the cobbled alleyways. Or make your way to the Belleville market, awash with exotic fruit, spices and herbs, Norwegian salmon, octopus, watches and T-shirts. The hill top reveals a lovely panorama over the city, framed by one of the last Parisian vineyards. Looking for culture? Try one of the unusual museums, romantic life, textiles, magic, or the house of Victor Hugo, author of Les Misérables, on Place des Vosges, then relax in the Luxembourg Gardens where men play chess in the shade and toddlers sail their boats on the ornamental pond. Flower beds bursting with colours meander along the paths while on the river bank, the Eiffel Tower looks down on the scene and a few Parisian secrets just off the beaten track.

True (But Unlikely)Romance From the deepest, darkest depths of mid-winter comes a heart-warming glow: Valentines’ Day. But not every pairing is a match made in heaven; some love stories are short stories, and others fail to spark at all. We’ve put together a selection of more unorthodox teenage love stories. The Fault in Our Stars, John Green Terminally-ill Hazel is living on borrowed time thanks to the wonders of modern medicine, but just when she thinks her own story is already written in the stars, into the Cancer Kid Support Group walks Augustus. Tragically heart-breaking and yet funny to boot, this is a brilliantly-written story of two individuals, coming together in the most unlikely of places and finding that life is often full of the most exquisite pain. The Perks of Being a Wallflower, Stephen Chbosky Always being on the periphery and one of life’s observers certainly may seem to have its advantages. Fifteen year old Charlie is the ‘wallflower’ in question and through a series of letters, reveals his fears about starting high school. Unusually for him, he is quickly befriended by a Senior called Patrick and becomes ingratiated into his group. Far from being another lighthearted high-school novel, the book tackles issues such as homophobia and incest. Charlie has a tough road ahead of him as he tries to come to terms with his past and learn to embrace his future.

Midwinterblood, Marcus Sedgewick Eric and Merle love each other but are separated by time and space. If you’ve ever thought that you lived another life, in another time, then spare a thought for this pair. The novel has seven stories which span the centuries, from ancient civilisations to the not-toodistant future and find Eric and Merle trying desperately to return to one another. Reincarnated as lovers, siblings, and even mother and son, they are repeatedly drawn back to each other. In this, the most unusual of gothic romances, the pair will eventually have to make the ultimate sacrifice. Ketchup Clouds, Annabel Pitcher It’s not just desperate women who start penning letters to people who are in penitentiaries. 15 year old Zoe decides to unburden herself of her story to a prisoner on Death Row. So terrible is her secret that she feels she can’t reveal what happened to anyone else and so Zoe writes to Stuart Harris in Texas. Zoe’s tale is packed with teenage angst, with the right smattering of humour

thrown in. Her letters of betrayal and the most terrible of love triangles will have you hooked right up until the last page. Stargirl, Jerry Spinelli Millions of readers have fallen in love with Stargirl, as does Leo, whose heart this kooky, alternative girl wins when she turns up at his high school. Jerry Maguire had his girl at ‘hello’; Stargirl only needs to smile for Leo to fall for her. She’s quirky and imaginative; a mysterious being with a celestial name and no one quite knows where she’s from or where she’s going. Whatever your age, Stargirl will stay with you, like a brand new friend. Every Day, David Levithan Whenever you think you’re not quite feeling yourself, spare a thought for ‘A’. Every morning, A wakes up in a different body, and it’s been that way since A was born. The instability and uncertainty has become the only constant in A’s life. That is, until A meets Rhiannon. On that fateful morning, A wakes up as none other than Rhiannon’s good for nothing boyfriend, Justin. From 24 wonderful hours grows a longing to be near someone and with someone, no matter what it takes.

Life Begins

Are you REALLY ready for romance? by Kate McLelland over £25,000 at auction for a (still drinkable) 170 year old bottle of champagne to celebrate his 10th wedding anniversary. If you must, even take American farmer Dick Kleis, who flew his wife over farmland in a plane to show her a loving birthday message he’d written out – you guessed it – in cow dung.

It’s that time of the year when we just can’t avoid the subject of romance, from the heart shaped decorations fluttering in shop windows to those indulgent dinnerfor-two recipes that appear in your local paper. Even search engines are in on the act: the minute you log on to your computer on 14th February, you know that a love-themed Google Doodle will pop up in your browser window.

experience.

This annual overdose of hearts and flowers can provoke a range of different reactions, depending on your age, situation or mindset.

For people who fall between those two extremes – generally that means couples in long-term relationships – there may be mixed feelings about St. Valentine’s Day. Depending on whether you are a ‘glass half full’ or a ‘glass half empty’ kind of person, you will either see the 14th February as the perfect opportunity to show your other half how much they mean to you, or as an occasion that merely serves to highlight the lack of romance in your relationship for the remaining 364 days of the year.

If you’re a teenager expecting your first Valentine card, or a loved-up newlywed couple, the 14th February can be a time of high excitement. Alternatively if you’re a singleton marooned at home with a ready meal for one, the day can turn out to be a thoroughly depressing

Of course, there are a lucky few who don’t need St Valentine’s Day to kick-start their romantic feelings: take David and Lauren Blair, who earned a place in the Guinness Book of Records for renewing their wedding vows over 100 times, or Ravi Viswanathan, who paid

We all love a love story. If those tales of romantic dedication aren’t enough, you can go online to find thousands of videos of people getting married in quirky but endearing ways: wing-walking on a biplane, abseiling down a building or clad in wetsuits, under water. It would seem that we can’t get enough of other people’s romantic experiences: one particular wedding dance video has enjoyed over 83,000,000 hits (which might suggest it’s not just the couple’s immediate family who are watching). With Mills and Boon romantic novels published in 26 different languages and sold in 109 countries world-wide, we don’t need a social anthropologist to tell us that a desire for romance is hardwired into the human psyche. However, while it may be great to fantasise about other people’s love-inspired exploits, we are sometimes a little less comfortable about experiencing them ourselves, in real life.

When football fan James Miller stripped down to his underwear and did a Cupid-style streak across the pitch, firing roses from a bow and arrow in tribute to his girlfriend, it didn’t have the effect he anticipated: she was so embarrassed that she dumped him. We can all sympathise with James’ plight: one person’s idea of romance is not always the same as another’s. When a friend of mine discovered that her husband had booked a Mexican Mariachi band to play outside their hotel window on holiday, she hid in the toilet until the song had ended. Last year on February 14th my partner of fifteen years rang me from work to say he’d booked a table at a new restaurant I’d spotted in town.

“It’ll be like a proper date,” he promised. Although it was exciting to dress up and go out on the spur of the moment, I’m afraid the whole thing ran out of steam pretty quickly: within half an hour we were discussing whether we should hire a plumber to fix a leaky tap in the bathroom. Our night out may not have been the height of romance, but on reflection it summed up the comfortable place we have reached in our relationship. In fact, if he’d hired a choir to sing “Love Is All Around” and showered me with

rose petals I’m pretty sure I would have run for the loo, just like my friend in Mexico. It’s sad that St Valentine’s Day has lost its excitement for many of us, but I still believe it’s worth celebrating. Of course, some people condemn the 14th February for its overt commercialism, but you don’t have to spend a fortune to show that you care. Remember farmer Dick Kleis and make the best of the resources you have to hand … however, Dear Reader, if you want your relationship to last, I would advise you not to take his example too literally.

Last year Macclesfield town centre will be the place for close encounters of the DUW\ kind when Barnaby Art kicks off the fifth Festival on Saturday 14 June, running until 29 June.

Barnaby Art will be headlined by a series of five s p e c i a l l y c om m is s i o n ed artworks from nationally renowned artists, funded by Arts Council England (to be announced). In addition, more than 30 exhibitions from artists in Macclesfield and beyond will showcase over 100 vibrant and diverse artworks, responding to the theme 'Industry' For the first time a dedicated Visual Arts Weekend (June 14 15) will be packed with workshops, talks and activities and artist groups will throw open their studio

there were over 12,000 visits to art at Barnaby and we are confident that 2014 is set to be our best year yet!

Apart from Barnaby Art, the

main weekend will be held over June 21st/22nd with the Carnival Parade on Saturday 21 June and 'Hive of Industry' in Market Place on Sunday 22 June with a small stage both days. There'll be nearly 40 art exhibitions, original musical productions, live music and headlines acts at historic Christ Church (but our lips are sealed..), walks, talks

and lots of free stuff of course. There's also a lot of interest in the new 'Music Fringe' which will take place over the last weekend of 27th – 29th June. There is still plenty of time for you to get involved either as a volunteer or with a float in the parade. Take a look at the website for inspiration!

If you would like to take part in the parade, but don’t know where to start, why not come along to Macclesfield Community ArtSpace, to be found on the 2nd floor of Sutton Mill on the corner of Heapy Street and Gunco Lane. There’s cake .. (I believe!). The ArtSpace crew are the people behind the concept of the Barnaby parade who now have their own ‘space’ to devote to community arty projects! They are holding regular workshops to advise and help in putting your float together and they are holding other regular ses sions, including samba drumming. Further details about what they do, and can do, can be found on either their Fac ebook page (Macclesfield Community ArtSpace) or their website ZZZ PDFFOHVILHOGFRPPXQLW\DUWVSDFH ZRUGSUHVV FRP
