Welcome to the November issue of Local People Macclesfield, ironically our biggest issue ever!! Anyway, last weekend I bought a camera. Don’t know what all the buttons are for just yet (might have to go to Serendipity’s workshop, see Page 19) - but as I hurried around the town one lunchtime snapping here and there, I realised that one of the many wonderful things about living in Macclesfield is that from practically every place you stop and stare (and what is this life, if full of care, we have no time to stop and stare ‌.thank you W H Davies!), you can see the hills. Which personally, I find calming and uplifting whatever the season and indeed each season brings with it its own particular view and inspiration. If you feel the same, I suggest you take a look at the article and ‘call to action’ on pages 31 and 32, which we have been asked to publish. It seems that these wonderful unobstructed views, amongst other things, could become a thing of the past if we don’t ‘wake up’ and take responsibility for our own surroundings and lovely town. Seasonal Recipe Venison is a lean and flavoursome red meat which is in season from October through to February. For the best quality, buy from a trusted butcher or farmers’ market. This warming casserole is perfect for a weekend supper served with creamy mashed potato and a glass of full-bodied red wine. Place the venison in a bowl and pour over the wine. Add the juniper berries and bay leaves, cover and marinate in the fridge for 4-5 hours or overnight. Remove from the fridge 1 hour before starting to cook the casserole. Preheat the oven to 150ºC/300ºF/Gas Mark 2. Strain the venison from the red wine (reserving the wine). Heat half the oil and butter in a large flameproof casserole dish and fry the venison in 2-3 batches until browned all over, adding the rest of the oil and butter when necessary. Remove the venison with a slotted spoon and set aside. Add the onions to the casserole and fry for 6-7 minutes until golden, adding the garlic after 3 minutes. Sprinkle over the seasoned flour and fry for a further 1-2 minutes. Gradually stir in the wine and stock and bring to the boil, scraping any sediment from the base of the casserole. Add the venison, parsnips, carrots and half the thyme sprigs to the casserole and season with salt and freshly ground black pepper. Cover and cook in the preheated oven for 1½ – 2 hours until the venison and vegetables are tender. Remove from the oven and stir in the redcurrant jelly. Return the casserole, uncovered, to the oven for a further 20-30 minutes. Serve garnished with the rest of the thyme sprigs and with creamy mashed potato, if liked.

1.3 kg diced venison 425ml red wine 1 tsp juniper berries 2 fresh bay leaves 2 tbsp olive oil 25g butter 350g shallots or button onions, peeled 2 garlic cloves, peeled and crushed 2 tbsp seasoned flour 300ml hot beef or vegetable stock 2 large parsnips, peeled and cut into chunks 4 carrots, peeled and cut into chunks few sprigs fresh thyme salt and freshly ground black pepper creamy mashed potato, to serve 3 tbsp redcurrant jelly

A Local Resident writes for Local People ‌. This month, Debbie’s thoughts on that famous Macclesfield landmark,

108 Steps I’m always transported back into times of old when I walk down the “108 Stepsâ€?, and often wonder whether the cobblestones used for these steps had been taken from the River Bollin or nearby streams in the 15th century when these small rounded lumps of stones, called cobs, first appeared on the streets. I also wonder how women in the 16th century could climb up the steps in their long dresses and farthingales, frames made of whale bone or wood that were worn under dresses, and if they felt cold without any knickers on as 16th century women did not wear them. But then I think the bonnets they wore must have kept them warm instead! I also picture in my mind’s eye men walking proudly up the 108 snug--fitting buttoned Steps wearing flat hats with feathers and snug jackets called doublets which were covered by hiphip-length jackets that had no collars or sleeves and were belted round the waist, making the men look very noble indeed. And then I smile to myself when I imagine these noblemen wearing knee breeches knee--length stockings and think how fashion has worn over knee changed over the years. I can then see myself as a child and recall how I felt when I first looked up at the 108 Steps, and remember thinking how magical and scary they appeared because the steps just didn’t seem to end ‌. And I picture myself as a 77-yearyear-old trying to run up the steps really quickly in one breath so my wish would come true, but I never managed to run up in one breath even though I still made my wish! And now as an adult, I am proud of the 108 Steps and love showing them to anyone who visits Macclesfield. Why? Because these wonderful steps have stood the test of time and remind me that Macclesfield has been around for a long time and it plans to be around for many more years to come.

Whether you’re a 35 year old Xbox lover, or a 12 year old Nintendo lover, being kept in depth with the latest gaming news is a must. The closure of the biggest game shop in Macclesfield ‘Game’ being shut earlier this year due to debt and not paying suppliers, has widened the gaming competition for some of the smaller shops selling games and shops like Argos, Tesco and Blockbuster trying to spread their wings wider to bring the customers to their stores. But with all this chaos of buying games on the high street, as well as price hikes, is it time to try a different approach with buying your games? This year, the gaming event E3 has showed us that in the next few months there are plenty of great titles to last us until the end of this year and far into 2013. And looking at the gaming industry now, you’d usually go to your nearest Game specialist shop to pick up your new release title at a price which will leave some dent in your piggy bank, with most titles costing up to ÂŁ40. With money being tight, especially for us teenagers, not working, or earning only minimal money from part-time jobs, we’re in the need to save as much as we can. Yet we just cannot resist getting our hands on the latest games in Macclesfield. So how can we save money yet still buy games as well?

Online shopping. This is one of the best advantages of having the internet, to find the best deals and offers on the games we’ve looked forward to for months. For example, on release day of any big title, you would expect to hand over around £40 exactly by walking into Macclesfield town centre, heading to either a game retailer or a supermarket, and making your purchase. But, on the internet, you can search for the cheapest from the comfort of your sofa. Secondly, online shopping has no car usage, so no reason to pester Mum or Dad for a lift into Macclesfield. Just order your game from wherever you find the best deal, which should be shipped to arrive on the day of release. But beware that this will mean having to pester your Mum or Dad (again no doubt) for the use of their credit card, as you cannot pay simply with the cash burning a hole in your pocket! Another plus is the free postage most online stores offer, so you’ve got a little bit put aside already for that next new release! So, in store or online, it’s up to you. Both have advantages and disadvantages, but for me personally there is still the thrill of going into a store and walking away with the new release in my hand. Others may disagree, and say shopping online gives them more gaming time! The choice is yours.

Burning Desire! Boom! A firework display erupts in a cascade of colour and noise, marking summer in a tourist town. Whoosh! A rocket arcs into the night sky to celebrate a birthday, wedding or special anniversary. Nowadays there is hardly a single event – summer or winter – that doesn’t merit a pyrotechnic show at the end, complete with its crowd of spectators providing the obligatory ‘oohs’ and ‘aahs’. So why does November 5th still hold such a special place in our hearts? It’s a fairly safe bet to say that the original reason for Bonfire Night – to commemorate the gory end of Jacobean terrorist Guido Fawkes and his fellow plotters – isn’t really on our minds these days when we celebrate the date. November 5th is one of those important times when young and old can come together – despite the dark and the cold winter weather – to enjoy a shared experience complete with its own traditions. Central to that ritual is the bonfire itself. The attraction of fire is hard-wired into our DNA. Some historians speculate that the activities we associate with Bonfire Night are actually borrowed from much earlier, pagan traditions and the dates certainly seem to fit. The ancient Celtic festival of Samhain began on October 31st (coincidentally our date for Halloween) and extended to the following day. At sunset on October 31st local villagers would assemble in order to build a giant bonfire, which then became the focal point of the event. The word ‘Samhain’ means “summer’s end” and communities came together both to thank the gods for the harvest and to help them face the long, dark months ahead. Ancient people also believed it was a time for contacting – and sometimes appeasing - the spirits of dead ancestors who might

lend a hand from the ‘other side’ to help the community through the challenges of winter. At the end of the celebration, each family would take a torch from the bonfire and bring it back to their home, where all fires had been deliberately extinguished the day before. These fires were then re-lit using the flame of the sacred bonfire: it was believed that if the fire went out, troubles would follow. This summer it has been interesting to observe a shadow of this practice in the rituals surrounding the Olympic torch – particularly the care that has been taken in preserving the flame throughout the national relays building up to the opening ceremony of the 2012 games. We consider that we belong to an enlightened and sophisticated society, so it is fascinating to observe the extraordinary pains taken by officials to ensure that the light originally sourced from the Temple of Hera at Olympia in Greece is not extinguished. Just as our ancient forefathers venerated the fire from the sacred Samhain bonfire, we treat the Olympic flame as a living being that must not be allowed to ‘die’ in case our hopes of success are extinguished with it. So next time you are standing round a November 5th bonfire – or even lying back in the bath, surrounded by a mass of flickering candles – you can reflect on our very human need to use fire as a bringer of hope and cheer. Reclaim PPI for FREE The swamp of adverts on the TV may make you think you need a company to reclaim missold payment protection insurance on current or old credit cards, store cards or loans, but you can do it yourself easily and for free. One of my site users did this in February, and cut her bill to £350 year with a £2,470 rebate from when she’d moved in. To check, first compare your band to neighbours’ in identical or similar properties to see if it’s higher. Then work out roughly what your house was worth back in 1991, as that’s what the bands depend on. Reclaim £1,000s of forgotten savings, investments and premium bonds There are billions of pounds sitting in forgotten accounts – may be yours or a relative’s. Do you know what’s planned for Macclesfield? Plans are well advanced for a huge retail development in Macclesfield town centre. The development would be three times the size of the retail space at Lyme Green. The plan puts both existing town centre businesses and our unique heritage at risk, and make no economic sense at a time when national chains are closing stores all over the country. The plans involve: 

Building on popular town centre car parks and destroying trees and green space, rather than using existing buildings and derelict land.

Creating a new, separate shopping street aimed at national retailers, plus a six-storey department store at the furthest point from the current town centre.

Building a large multi-storey car park that would dominate the historic Park Green Conservation Area, the old Registry Office, the Silk Museum, and the skyline.

The development would turn Macclesfield into a building site for years, with noise, dust, heavy construction traffic and road closures making the town an unpleasant place to be and harming trade. This is NOT just another idea that won’t see the light of day. Councillors are due to decide on the plans in February next year.

The Wilson Bowden scheme is wrong for Macclesfield because: 

It is based on outdated projections that don’t take account of the fact that online shopping and the recession mean fewer people now shop in town centres.

It moves activity and car parking away from the top of the town and puts existing businesses at risk.

National retailers are no longer setting up new stores in small towns; neither are big names enough to bring people to a town. Stockport has plenty, but still has more empty retail space than Macclesfield and struggles to attract footfall. The most likely scenario is that businesses we already have will move into the new street and leave empty premises behind them.

If take up for the new units is low, Macclesfield could become a permanent building site. Similar projects elsewhere have been started and abandoned because not enough retailers have signed up to make the scheme viable. Even if there are enough takers, construction would last for years. Now is not the time to put Macclesfield’s fragile recovery at risk by starting a major construction project that will reduce numbers coming into the town.

It provides for only five new houses, when Cheshire East say we will need 3,500 and are looking to build on the countryside around the town.

It does not fit in any way with Macclesfield’s historic and architectural heritage. The design is cheap and bland, typical of failing clone towns across the UK.

Leaves Are you surrounded, engulfed and swamped with huge quantities of fallen leaves? The deluge that falls at this time of year is often enough to make even the most level headed, tree-loving gardener eye up a chainsaw. So what can you do? Turn them in to gardeners’ gold: leafmould. If you want an environmentally friendly and very effective soil conditioner or mulching material, leafmould is the answer. If you have the space, make yourself a leafmould cage. Simply drive four treated softwood stakes into the ground, each stake marking out one corner of the ‘cage’. The stakes need to be about 1.5m (5ft) long so that they can be driven in really well, to a depth of 1-2ft, leaving 3-4ft above ground. Then attach some galvanized chicken wire to the stakes to create the sides of the cage and cram the cage full of leaves. If they aren’t moist, add a watering can of water to the heap of leaves, pouring some in after each six inches of leaves. You can also speed up the process by using a leafmould activator (available from garden centres, mail order catalogues and websites). Most deciduous leaves rot down well, especially oak and beech trees. Leaves from fruit trees, garden shrubs and climbers work well too. Try to avoid including too many twigs or evergreen leaves as these take much longer to rot, as do tough, leathery leaves such as those from sycamore, horse chestnut and plane. Most of us collect leaves using a springtined rake and although slower, it helps you avoid some materials more easily. A leaf sucker or a leaf blower is quicker but will often mean you end up with more twigs and stones. If your leaves are a wide-ranging assortment, then a good idea is to use the lawn mower – just mow the lawn with the leaves on it. The collection bag on the

mower will then be full of a brilliant mix of chopped leaves and even the slowerto-rot-down types will rot speedily as they have been chopped up quite finely. Mixed with the lush, high-nitrogen grass clippings, the whole process is sped up. If space, time or money are short then you can also make leafmould in a bin liner or bin bag. Choose a good quality bin liner and cram it full of leaves, again adding water and/or activator if you wish. Then stab a few holes in the bag with a garden fork, loosely fold over the top of the bag and weigh it down with a brick. You should have a useable product in 12-18 months, but the longer you leave it the better. Leafmould will help to improve the moisture-retaining capacity of a light, sandy soil and increase the aeration and drainage of a heavy clay soil. It also makes wonderful mulch that can be used on flower beds and borders, the vegetable plot, around trees and shrubs and on your fruit as well. It’s not often you get something for nothing, is it? So take advantage of all those leaves while you can. With very few exceptions - major sporting events, the X Factor and so on - the days when we all watched the same programmes at the same time are long gone: increasingly TV is something we record and watch later on. But what happens if you forget to record something, or something went wrong with the recording? Don’t despair, because it’s never been easier to turn back time.

How tech can stop you missing your favourite shows

Ones To Watch

We’re talking, of course, about catch-up TV: the sites and services that enable you to watch programmes that have already been broadcast. The best-known service is the BBC’s excellent iPlayer (www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer), which you can use to ensure you never miss an episode of Newsnight or EastEnders, and which is available not just for computers but for games consoles too. There’s also an app to watch iPlayer programmes on an iPhone or iPad. One of the great things about iPlayer is that it doesn’t just cover BBC One: there’s also the entertainment channel BBC 3, the arts channel BBC 4 and the children’s channels cBBC and cBeebies - which is really handy if the only thing that’ll calm the kids is a quick blast of In The Night Garden. Programmes are usually available immediately after broadcast, and they remain online for a week. The BBC isn’t the only major broadcaster offering catch-up TV. ITV has the ITV player (www.itv.com/ itvplayer), Channel 4 has 4oD (www.channel4.com/

programmes/4oD) and Channel Five has Demand Five (www.channel5. com/demand5). Like the BBC’s iPlayer they enable you to watch the last week of programming and they’re also available as apps for mobile phones and tablets, although unlike BBC iPlayer they include advertising as well as programming. For an easy way to search across all the broadcasters’ catch-up services, check out www.timefortelly. co.uk, a search engine for British catch-up TV. Sky’s catch-up services are subscriber-only: if you’re a Sky customer you can access Sky Go at go.sky. com. Catching up via computers, phones or tablets is very handy, but what about using your TV? If you’re with Virgin Media or Sky you can access catchup TV via your cable or satellite box, although you need a specific kind of box: with Virgin you need a Virgin Media TiVo, which gives you the BBC iPlayer, 4oD and ITV’s Net Player, and with Sky you need a broadband-connected Sky+ box to access its Sky Anytime+ service. It’s

a similar story with BT Vision: customers with a Vision+ box can access catch-up TV as part of their package.

Freeview can do catch-up TV too: most Freeview HD TVs are Smart TVs, which means they can access BBC’s iPlayer if they’re connected to the internet, and many Freeview+ HD recorders can do the same. If you don’t have the hardware, however, you might want to buy something newer and more interesting: the new digital TV service YouView (www.youview.com) offers all the broadcasters, not just the BBC. For example, the Humax DTR-T1000 digital TV recorder gives you Freeview+ HD and YouView for a subscriptionfree of £279.95. Its 500GB hard disk gives you up to 300 hours of recording time. YouView’s on-demand and catch-up services make it one to watch, but if you’re considering it, it’s important to ensure your internet service is up to the job: YouView uses your internet connection to download programmes, so make sure your ISP account doesn’t have a small monthly data transfer limit.
