Harmony Day festival at Robelle Domain Organised by World Harmony Society Inc. the fourth year of Harmony Day Festival will be held on 12 March at Robelle Domain Park, Springfield Central from 3.00pm to 8.00pm.

The festival aims to celebrate Harmony Day, and to connect multicultural, main stream communities and organisations, as well as enhancing intercultural understanding and solidarity in order to foster a more harmonious society.

The festival features free face-painting, a free land train, lion dance and workshop, Japanese Taiko performance and workshop, magic show,

international food stalls, circus performance, martial arts demonstrations and workshop, multicultural performances, lightening dragon dance, fi reworks spectacular, and a lot more.

Other than dynamic performances, the festival is also helping schools and communities to fundraise for their needs. President Shan Ju Lin encourages schools and community organisations to take

advantage off the early bird fun ride tickets selling fundraising program, as the participants will receive a good percentage of the profit from sales.

Building better communities through communication

If you read my blog, you’ll know that I’m doing a Grateful 365 (except this year it’s 366) journal. Basically, it’s where you take a photo capturing something you’re grateful for that day, for a year. And for me, when I have time, I put it on my blog as well.

Now, we’re not too far into the year and I must admit, even this early on, some days it’s a challenge to find something to photograph. It not always because I’m not grateful but sometimes, it’s tricky to find something that can be photographed. And some days, it is just the fact that I’m not feeling very grateful for anything - which is exactly the reason I’m doing it!

The decision to make it ‘public’ by putting it on my blog, as opposed to just in my journal, was one I wasn’t a hundred percent sure about. I mean, really, was anyone going to want to read that everyday?

And then I received a message from someone. This person is going through a tough time and she said that reading my blog and daily gratefulness was giving her hope and reminding her that there are plenty of things to be grateful for if only we look for them. I don’t know this lady very well, so I had no idea about what was going on in her life. I certainly didn’t expect that I could ever make a difference in her life.

So now, I feel like it’s worth putting it on the blog, that is - it’s worth sharing what I often think would be boring or meaningless to others in a public space.

Helping or making a difference to one person is enough reason for me.

You see, so often we think our little voice can’t be heard amongst the white noise and consistent chatter of the world and society. In reality, we underestimate ourselves and our impact on others. A kind or encouraging word can make all the difference to someone, just as my words did to my friend and hers did for me.

It’s too easy to be silent, to be caught up in the false humility that tells us what we have to say isn’t worth anything. If we think back on what has influenced us, things people have said, small gestures of kindness and care, we might begin to realise that ‘small’ counts, and in turn, give that back to those around us.

We all have something to offer others, no matter how soft our voice seems to us, no matter how limited we think our reach is, no matter how insignificant we think what we have to say is. We all matter. We each have a unique perspective that just might help someone else in a way no-one else can.

This year, before it gets too busy, perhaps we need to think about whether we are hoarding our special take on the world to ourselves and consider sharing more with others. You might be surprised, like I was, that your words matter. So don’t keep yourself to yourself, reach out, speak up and make a difference!

Something for everyone at this year’s Plant Expo The Ipswich Plant Expo will be running its fourth show in March and the people of South East Queensland have embraced the event as the best specialised plant expo during the ‘wet season’.

Ipswich Plant Expo is a plant collector’s paradise with plants rarely seen at other events. If you are a collector and designer and seeking that elusive plant, then this event will surely satisfy your plant cravings.

The event was created as a result of so much sadness after the 2011 floods. People wanted to get back into gardening but did not know how. The event helped locals by bringing the knowledge to them with guest speakers, specialist plant sellers and a welcoming smile.

Local and interstate expert horticulturists will be speaking to share their knowledge, skills and enthusiasm. It’s their practical and entertaining presentations that gardeners keep talking about.

Art in Bark will have an exhibition of bark pictures, jewellery, cards, bookmarkers and more on display for sale at the Expo, which will be held at the Ipswich Turf Club Racecourse, Brisbane Rd, Bundamba, Ipswich.

The event will cross two days, Saturday 12th March 8am – 4pm and Sunday 13th March 8am – 3pm.

The entry fee is just $7 per adult with children under 15 free. Parking is free and with beautiful plants and flowers on display and for sale, entertainment, guest speakers, a creche for the children and a variety of food stalls, why not spend the day browsing and enjoy a family day out.

Clean Up Australia is a not-for-profit charity which relies on donations from individuals and businesses to help us fund the free materials we provide for the thousands of volunteers at community sites all year round. The Kiwanis family is on the verge of making history in its centennial year. During the last five years, Kiwanis, UNICEF and its partners have raised US$104 million for The Eliminate Project, a global campaign that will save and protect millions of mothers and babies from a preventable disease, known as maternal and neonatal tetanus (MNT).

In 2010, 630,000 Kiwanians from around the world set out on what seemed like an impossible task at the time, raising US$110 million to help eliminate maternal and neonatal tetanus from the face of the earth. Today, we are face to face with the finish line.

During the last five years, 19 countries have been eliminated of MNT, leaving 21 countries that are still at risk.

The project will allow the vaccination of 60,000,000 mothers and their babies in 40 countries, targeting some of the poorest, most underserved women and children in the world.

MNT is easily prevented by a series of three vaccine doses to women of child bearing age, costing about US$1.80. Kiwanis International is on the brink of raising US$110 million, making it the world’s largest donor.

President of the Kiwanis Club of Brisbane, Mrs Bev Lancaster, said “It has been a life saving project, knowing that every $1 dollar raised has saved a life, and over the past five years the club members have almost reached their pledged figure of $18,000.

This figure is on top of funds we have raised to support local and national charities.”

Australia Kiwanis District, which has clubs throughout the country have raised in excess of $560,000 for The Eliminate Project.

Women on Wheels rolls out

Women on Wheels (WOW) is a new program of fun and adventurous introductions to wheel-based recreation to help Ipswich women discover new sports and to increase their activity levels. Parks, Sport and Recreation Committee Chairperson Councillor David Morrison said the diversity of wheel-based activities meant there was something for everyone. He said the program would roll out from 4 February over the next eight months.

“Whether you’re a beginner, looking to transition into a new sport, or just wanting to explore new things, Women on Wheels has something for you,” Cr Morrison said.

“Wheel sports are currently exploding in popularity as people discover they’re fun, a great workout, safe, and very low impact on joints, making them suitable for anyone. WOW has engaged top local sporting talent to provide structured introductions to these great sports covering equipment safety and the basic skills and techniques for women to get off to a racing start.”

Women on Wheels activities include: • cycling • mountain biking • skateboarding • scooting • roller skating • roller derby • artistic skating “There’s no limit to how many activities people can participate in, so there’s many opportunities to try something new and maybe discover a new passion. All activities are suitable for absolute beginners and are totally free of charge.”

Springfield Councillor David Morrison was thrilled to be one of the first to walk a 3km formalised pathway along Opossum Creek (6km circuit).

Cr David Morrison said this walking path will eventually link Bellbird Park with Springfield Central via a very picturesque pathway and believes it will become a very popular walking path for fitness and recreation.

The construction of the walking track is a condition of development with Springfield Land Corporation and is a contributing factor in the Greater Springfield Development winning national and international awards when it comes to achieving a healthy balance between the environment and the development.

Cr David Morrison has fond memories of walking the uncleared track with the late well respected naturalist and self-taught botanist Lloyd Bird who had a love and passion for Opossum Creek and its surrounding flora and fauna.

Cr David Morrison spoke at Lloyd Birdâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s funeral and wrote a poem that finished with the line â&#x20AC;&#x153;Weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ll miss you but weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ll continue your work on Opossum Creek.â&#x20AC;? â&#x20AC;&#x153;I know Lloyd would have been thrilled to walk along the formalised pathway as it will give this and future generations a respect for Opossum Creek and possibly groups will arise that will care for different segments of the creek,â&#x20AC;? said Cr David Morrison.

The best way to access the new pathway is to park in the Opossum Creek Parklands at the end of Scoparia Drive at Brookwater and head across the oval to the newly created pathway.

Water-slide for charity coming to Springfield SPRINGFIELD LAKES

MS Queensland is excited to announce the newest addition to the events calendar in 2016, raising vital funds to continue supporting those living with multiple sclerosis (MS) across Queensland.

The record breaking MS Street Slider will be the biggest slip â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;nâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; slide in Queensland, stretching three lanes wide and 336 metres long, making it the worldâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s first charityrun fundraising water slide, offering hours of fun for the whole family.

Running from 9am on Saturday 5 March, Queenslanders will be slipping and sliding down Springfieldâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Eden Station Drive in two hour sessions, with participants encouraged to ride the slide as many times as they can while also raising much needed funds and awareness for people living with MS. With your help, MS Queensland aims to raise over $100,000 for people living with MS to continue providing vital support services to those living with MS. MS Queensland is excited to announce that Brisbane local, Ellie Messina as the MS Street Slider Ambassador, to share her story and passion for the cause.

At just 22 years of age, Ellie was diagnosed with MS in 2014 while completing her Masters in Business and Human Resource Management. Symptoms of hearing loss, extreme vertigo and nausea left Ellie bedridden for three weeks and unable to work. â&#x20AC;&#x153;My journey with MS was tough to begin with as I was in shock for a while, however thanks to the amazing support network of family and friends around me and the extensive information available from MS Queensland, I am very positive and hopeful.â&#x20AC;?

By joining MS Queensland as an Ambassador for the event, Ellie is keen to focus her energy on fundraising and raising awareness of MS to help other young people who are in her situation.

With limited government funding for the extensive support services provided by MS Queensland to those living with MS, fundraising activities such as the MS Street Slider are vitally important.

The event zone on Eden Station Drive in Springfield will come alive with the sounds of laughter and excited squeals, pumping tunes from DJs and an array of food vendors on site for growling tummies. A ticket to the brand new MS Street Slider includes two hours of unlimited rides and all day access to the eventâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s numerous vendors and live entertainment. However, with a limit of only 3,000 participants for the event, securing your ticket early will guarantee your involvement in this landmark event!

The local Rotary Club of Greater Springfield welcomed in the New Year when it conducted its first weekly meeting of the year with partners and friends at Beach House Bar and Grill at Orion Shopping Centre. The 25 members and guests enjoyed the Beach House’s friendly hospitality including excellent food and great service in a patrons a relaxed friendly environment.

The Rotary Club of Greater Springfield conducts meetings at local Springfield venues not just to support local business but also to spread the fellowship which is Rotary and promote the reason for becoming a Rotarian.

This reason being the chance to do something for somebody else and to experience the self-fulfilment that comes from the process. It is a richly rewarding activity.

Club President Lee Watson said the club is certainly keeping very busy with support for various activities and programmes over the past year and into the next. He encouraged members to stay focused with the challenge to engage others through effort and commitment to provide Service Above Self to change lives and provide a better place for our local and international community.

More potential projects are being planned and as such, the club needs to attract more enthusiastic members to engage in these new projects and other initiatives.

Rotary is the world’s first service club organisation, with more than 1.2 million members in 33,000 clubs worldwide.

Rotary club members just like the members of the local Rotary Club of Greater Springfield are volunteers who work locally, regionally, and internationally to combat hunger, improve health and sanitation, provide education and job training, promote peace, disaster relief and eradicate polio under the motto Service Above Self.

Free graffiti clean-up kits now available from council Local residents dealing with graffiti in the community can collect a free clean-up kit from Ipswich City Council.

Available through all divisional offices and the Ipswich Visitor Information Centre, the kits include gloves, goggles, graffiti remover, safety instructions and a paint brush and bucket.

City Infrastructure Committee Chairperson Councillor Cheryl Bromage said Queensland councils spent millions of dollars each year on graffiti removal.

“This is money that could be better spent on community projects like parks and infrastructure improvements,” she said.

“It’s important to remember that graffiti is a crime that is punishable under wilful damage offences in the Queensland Criminal Code Act.” Cr Bromage said the kits provided a quick and convenient way for the community to remove graffiti on private property.

“Council’s graffiti removal trailer is also available to community groups. It is fitted out with equipment to clean graffiti and can be booked by phoning 3810 6666,” she said.

“We have a hot-spot list of parks which are checked every week, but overall I am happy to say there has been a downward trend in the number of graffiti incidents handled by council in the past year.”

The 2016 school year has commenced in a most positive manner at The Springfield Anglican College.

Congratulations must first go to the Year 12 cohort of 2015 who achieved excellent OP Results, enabling the great percentage of the cohort to gain entry into their preferred university course.

Eighty-four percent of OP eligible students achieved within the OP 1-10 range, rising to ninetyfour percent for those achieving an OP 1-12 which is an outstanding achievement. One hundred percent achieved an A, B or C in the Queensland Core Skills test, which is also outstanding.

More importantly, these results enabled 79% of students to gain entry to their first or second choice of university course, rising to 93% when third choices are added in.

As a non-academically selective College, the students should be rightly proud of their achievements, and the College rightly proud of the quality of teaching and pastoral care that has facilitated such results.

With enrolments well up on 2015, the College is now focusing its attention on facility development on the Secondary Campus. Planning has commenced for the addition of two additional sports courts to be

constructed during Term Two this year, as well as the construction of a new Resource Centre. The Resource Centre will incorporate the more traditional elements of a Library, as well as a range of flexible learning spaces, all with a strong technology focus. All going to plan, the new Resource Centre will be operational for the 2018 school year.

This year the College is also beginning a journey as an Authentic Learning Community. That is, providing students with far more exposure to real life, real world learning experiences. The emphasis on authentic learning seeks to provide students with more relevance to their learning and also higher levels of engagement. This emphasis also aims to assist students to develop their critical and creative thinking, ability to solve complex problems, as well as their emotional intelligence and resilience, all of which will be highly valuable irrespective of future career pathways chosen.

The College theme for 2016 - ‘Community in Action – Aspire and Inspire’- aims to encourage students to strive to achieve great things academically, across the breadth of the College’s extra-curricular offering and in reaching out to those in less fortunate positions in our society which is already one of the great strengths of the College community.

Info Coach program returns to Ipswich Libraries A program that offers a personalised insight into the resources available at Ipswich Libraries has returned for 2016.

Free to library members, Info Coach provides information on the library catalogue and website as well as online newspapers, magazines, music and movies.

It is also a great way to learn about e-books, audiobooks and other digital library resources.

Tourism and Libraries Committee Chairperson Councillor David Pahlke said the service was particularly popular after Christmas.

“We usually experience an influx of bookings during January and February with people receiving new or upgraded e-devices for Christmas,” he said. “Ipswich Libraries now has a combined 5,500 e-books, e-audiobooks and e-videos, along with access to more than 4,000 newspaper and magazine titles.

“We’re looking to remain on the cutting edge of new reader technologies as more and more library patrons embrace digital options.”

A message from the Mayor’s Desk WITH THE MAYOR - COUNCILLOR PAUL PISASALE Springfield has been formally identified as a major growth corridor in the Advance Ipswich plan. The plan provides a shared vision for the future development of the Ipswich Local Government Area while identifying key themes and areas for action. It was officially launched last month after an extensive community consultation process and confirms Ipswich’s position as the capital of the Western Corridor. The plan can be viewed online, with more information and a new website to be launched in coming weeks.

In more great news for the region, Springfield Central is set to get its first Australian Defence Force memorial. The monument, known as Springfield Light Tower, will be built at Robelle Domain at a cost of more than $100,000. The Springfield Light Tower Committee is currently in the fundraising phase to make the memorial a reality. They already have $25,000 in the bank so if you can help boost this total please visit the Springfield Light Tower Facebook page.

It was great to see so many smiling faces at the Australia Day Fiesta at Robelle Domain. A big thanks to the team from Westside Community Care for their organisation and fundraising efforts, and also to Springfield Lakes IGA and Loan Market for their sponsorship and support. There was some tremendous talent on show in the Sing Up Competition and Twenty20 cricket clash and the fireworks finale once again showed what a spectacular family facility we have here in Springfield.

Greater Springfield Lions Club Update

Welcome back to another great year. The Lions Club of Greater Springfield is off to a busy start.

We will be launching our Knitting for the Homeless Project where we are aiming to donate 500 beanies and scarves to the homeless ready for winter. We would love the local community to get behind us and donate wool or if you are a knitter then begin knitting beanies and scarves. If you need a supply of wool, you can contact us on gspringfieldlions@gmail.com. You can drop any finished products or wool into Mossell’s Cafe by the lake at Springfield lakes. We hope to have a couple more drop off points but you can also contact us via our email address.

We are having a BBQ at Bunnings Springfield on March 5 so please come and buy a sausage from us. On March 12 we will be having a cheesecake stall at the Harmony festival at Robelle Domain.

On March 20 we will be running the BBQ for the Maters Little Miracle Fun run starting at Robelle Domain.

Our dinner meetings are the second Tuesday of the month at the Springfield Tavern. If you are interested in making wonderful friends while helping your community, then we are the group for you. NATIONAL SENIORS UPDATE

Goodna/Redbank Branch

Welcome to February 2016. National Seniors branches generally take time off from activities over the holiday season and get back into full swing with meetings and social activities in February.

This month the Goodna/Redbank branch social club met for coffee at Gloria Jeans, Orion, Springfield. The social club meets socially for a cup of coffee, cake and a chat on the first Wednesday of each month at 9.30am usually at a different venue in the district. For the 2nd March, the social club will meet at the Queens Park Kiosk, Ipswich at the usual time.

Our guest speaker for the 16th February meeting was from the Australian Tea Company ‘Nerada Tea’. The founders of Nerada Tea as we know it today, the Cutten Brothers were the pioneers of the Australian Tea Industry gaining a grant for land and planting their first plantation way back in 1886 on the Tully river, Bingal Bay, North Queensland.

Of course we need to keep up to date with what is happening in Council Division 2 so we have invited Councillor, Paul Tully to give members an update on rezoning and Council activities in the district including those of special interest for the over 50’s.

National Seniors Australia is the largest independent seniors organisation in Australia with branches throughout Australia and 55 branches in Queensland. The Goodna/Redbank National Seniors branch meets on the third Tuesday of each month at the Goodna Leagues Club, Brisbane Terrace, Goodna at 10.00am. Diabetes mellitus is a common disorder in both people and pets, especially older pets. It is caused by a lack of insulin in the body or a lack of response to insulin.

Insulin is produced in the pancreas and allows the body’s cells to utilise glucose from the blood for energy. When an animal does not have enough insulin, glucose levels in the blood increase and glucose is lost in urine. Meanwhile the body is forced to use energy sources other than glucose and this causes the build up of toxins in the body.

Diagnosis of diabetes is usually straightforward. A blood test to show the increased level of glucose is all that is required to detect this disease, however a full blood and urine test is needed for an overall picture.

Diabetic pets can be divided into those suffering ‘simple’ diabetes mellitus, those with a more serious condition called ‘ketoacidotic’ diabetes mellitus and those that have insulin resistance from concurrent illness.

Clinical signs of diabetes will vary with the severity of the disease but can include the following: • increased thirst and increased urination; • increased appetite with variable weight changes (often increased in early stages); • may be depressed and lethargic; • may be vomiting; • may have sweet breath; • may be dehydrated; • may develop cataracts in the eyes.

Treatment of diabetes depends on the severity of the disease. Pets with diabetes will require insulin injections twice daily. ‘Simple’ diabetics who are eating well will often start insulin injections straight away and spend only a short time in hospital for monitoring. Pets can then go home for their owner to give regular insulin injections. Often dietary changes are necessary and diabetics need to be fed at times suitable for their insulin doses.

Pets with more severe ketoacidotic diabetes or concurrent illness, will require more prolonged hospitalisation and treatment so they can be stabilised before going home on insulin.

With regular monitoring and treatment, good control of blood glucose levels is possible in most cases. This reduces the risk of long term side effects such as liver and kidney damage and cataracts. It is also important to rule out concurrent diseases that may affect glucose control. Most pets with diabetes will need to have their blood glucose checked every few months. This involves a day in hospital with several blood tests through the day, as blood glucose levels fluctuate. This is important as insulin requirements can change over time.

2016 promises to be a great year across Ipswich. Major development continues throughout the city particularly in Ipswich’s eastern suburbs. Key economic and environmental initiatives will be delivered. The new Library at Orion Springfield Central will be progressed mid-year with a view to opening in 2017/18. This will be an iconic and much-utilised facility for our area.

Development Update Development continues at rapid rate in Augustine Heights with the new neighbourhood shopping centre under construction at the corner of Augusta Parkway and Leon Capra Drive. A new vehicle showroom precinct has been approved by Ipswich City Council for the corner of Augusta Parkway and Technology Drive. Construction should commence later this year.

NBN Rollout The new NBN rollout in Ipswich’s eastern suburbs is scheduled to start in Augustine Heights, east of Woogaroo Creek in July/August. Construction at Brookwater, Springfield and Springfield Lakes will also commence around the same time. This will be installed as fibre-to-the-node rather than fibre-to-the-premises. This technology utilises existing copper cable for the final leg of the connection which is not as good as fibre-to-the-premises but at least we are now getting NBN after a delay of three years.

We enjoyed our first fundraiser for 2016 in January, a sausage sizzle which was held at Masters Springfield. We received great support from the customers and staff. A big thank you to our members who come to help armed with aprons and gloves. We all had a great day with a lot of fun and laughter.

Also we are looking forward to many breakfasts and coffee catch ups in between our regular monthly meetings.

New members have been welcomed to the committee and are putting forward a lot of good ideas. National Seniors are there to support the 50+ age group wanting to meet and enjoy the company of people in our community.

Orion Town Centre

As a local Camira resident since 1966, I recall the 18th Australian Scout Jamboree being held in 1998 on the land where Orion Springfield Central is now constructed.

The access was a dirt track via Old Logan Road and Scouts from across the globe and across Australia were involved. Few would appreciate that this Jamboree site would become Orion Springfield Central. This would have been the largest event held in what is now Springfield Central.

I take my hat off to the organisers. This site had no permanent power, water, sewage and yet the organisers went ahead and coordinated a very successful Scout Jamboree. I remember visiting the Jamboree and it was like a suburb in the middle of nowhere.

If you have any photos of the Jamboree held in Springfield Central, can you please send me a copy to dmorrison@ ipswich.qld.gov.au. The Scouts Motto is ‘Be Prepared’ - be prepared in mind and in body. We can all take note of this motto.

CREATIVE heART New beginnings A new year is traditionally considered as a new start, time for new (updated perhaps?) resolutions or time for change and improvement in our lives, work or personal interests.

There is no difference at the community level. Mid January brought an exciting opportunity, thanks to Queensland Community Services, a meeting with Marcus Westbury. Marcus is a broadcaster, writer, media maker and man behind Renew Newcastle, nonfor-profit organisation, DIY urban renewal scheme that has successfully changed under-utilised Newcastle CBD street scape into a vibrant creative enterprises, artists and cultural projects.

Marcus openly shared the story behind his personal journey and the early days of his passionate project on the central coast of New South Wales to a fully packed room, Studio 188, Ipswich. The results speak for themselves - the program has been changing the city and the community fully embraced those opportunities to turn around its town. Its CBD centre is a vibrant, living and extremely creative precinct enthusiastically painted

by ABC TV as “an incredible success...both to assist the business community in the area while simultaneously giving a boost to local artists and designers”.

Marcus Westbury’s visit marks an important milestone in our local community life – a community based movement involving members of various local groups, unions, churches, businesses, owners of the vacant properties and creative, enterprising community to tackle aspects of safety, mental health and community wellbeing by bringing together the property owners and those willing to roll their sleeves up and have a go at their dream of operating a creative enterprise from one of many vacant spots around the town.
