Empowering tomorrow’s decisions Ipswich Community Youth Service (ICYS) is a not-forprofit community based organisation that supports and assists at risk children and young people, their families and their communities to identify their strengths, become active citizens and make positive decisions for their future.

As a not-for-profit organisation, ICYS relies on government funding and donations from businesses and the community to provide services to young people in Ipswich and the surrounding regions. ICYS prides itself on the targeted, professional and reputable work it provides to support some of the most vulnerable people in our community.

ICYS provides a wide range of support including assistance with educational engagement, housing and homelessness, disability, information, referral, advocacy, practical assistance, drop-in, emergency relief and recreational activities in Ipswich and the surrounding regions of the Lockyer Valley, Somerset, Scenic Rim and West Brisbane.

Personally Speaking with Susannah Friis Somewhere in the week between Christmas and New Years, my washing machine broke. And when I say broke, I mean it would fill the tub full of water and then refuse to wash, leaving me with a load of sopping wet clothes and limited means to rectify the situation. To say I was annoyed and frustrated would be an understatement. After having guests and a full house over Christmas, I subsequently faced piles of dirty sheets, tablecloths, towels and clothes laying about my laundry.

Even though I took a few loads of essentials to a friendâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s house and used her machine while I waited the week and a half it took for the part to come in and the repairman to come back and fix it, there was a backlog of washing to be done. One of my husbandâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s well used phrases is â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;playing catch upâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;. It has a myriad of applications and certainly applies here!

I hate â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;playing catch upâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; of any sort. Whether itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s coming back to an overflowing inbox after a holiday, washing when itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s been raining (or a broken machine!), weeding the garden or the piles of washing up and dishwasher duties after a weekend of entertaining.

Another circumstance in which we say â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;catch upâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; is with regard to friends. And I have to be honest, this is something I would actually rather not do.

Let me explain. The fact that I need to â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;catch upâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; on my friends lives, says to me that I havenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t seen them enough to keep up to date on whatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s happening with them. If my life is too busy to hear about the everyday things that happen in the lives of those I love, then maybe I need to refocus my life and where my time is spent.

Of course, itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s wonderful, and necessary, to spend longer chunks of time with people to really hear where theyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re at and how they are travelling, but when weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve left it so long that there are the metaphorical piles of washing strewn about, it should be a warning to us that we arenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t investing enough in those around us.

And in our marriages, where jobs, kids, other family, friends and commitments, all take up our time, we can find ourselves never delving deeper than the logistics of life i.e. whatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s for dinner, whoâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s taking who to dance, sport or music lessons. Before we know it, we need to â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;catch upâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; on our spouse.

Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s easy to let things pile up and get behind in our relationships and often, our only fault is a lack of intentional connection. It takes time to ask the deeper questions, just as it takes time to put a load of washing on, hang it out, fold it and put it away. But just as it takes a lot more time to catch up on washing after the machine breaks down, it takes a lot more time to repair a relationship after an extended time of only relating on a surface level.

Why not resolve this year to be more intentional with your relationships? Putting a load on every day is more beneficial to everyone than having to do load upon load trying to catch up.

The 2015 school year has commenced in a most positive manner for The Springfield Anglican College, with enrolments very strong and several new facilities ready for occupation. Demand for places at the College has been extremely strong with a number of year groups at capacity. Current enrolments sit at 850 students across Prep to Year Twelve, with all 88 Kindergarten places filled.

The College has a capped upper limit of enrolments which translates to approximately 500 students on each Campus and a maximum of three classes per year group.

This upper limit is set to ensure each student receives the individual attention they deserve and not get ‘lost in the crowd.’ In the case of the Primary Campus, this equates to a maximum of 500 students Prep to Year Six, with an additional 88 Kindergarten places in The Tiny Tartan Kindergarten.

Forward enrolments are also very encouraging, with parents opting to enrol their children at a very early age.

The College takes enrolments at any time throughout the year and, should a waiting list occur, applications will be ordered in terms of the date received.

With the completion of the new Creative Arts Precinct, Year Seven classrooms and change facilities, the Secondary Campus certainly takes on a new look. These spacious purpose-built facilities provide a new array of learning opportunities for students in Years Seven to Twelve, facilitated by a range of different technologies.

For example, the new Music room contains a class set of iMac’s linked to keyboards that enable students to compose, record and critique their own music.

Over the next few weeks the courtyard within the Creative Arts Precinct will be established as an inviting and engaging area for students to spend time outside of class times.

On the Primary Campus a new Dance room is also being established to support the great interest of Prep to Year Six students in both curriculum and extra-curricular Dance.

The College will now turn its attention to the next major building project on the Secondary Campus. While a decision has not yet been finalised, the most likely project will be a state-of-the-art Resource Centre. In this day and age, the design and usage of a Resource Centre is an interesting question in itself, as technology continues to pervade the way in which students seek and use information.

Although the recent sign on day has passed, Goodna Scout Group encourages any parent wanting their child to be involved in Scouting this year to make an enquiry.

Scouts is a worldwide organisation for youth aged from six to 26 years. It teaches social and leadership skills through challenge and outdoor adventure. The program follows the school calendar year with outdoor activities held on weekends and during school holidays.

Scouts Queensland Chief Commissioner, Kirsty Brown OAM, reported that there are over 15 000 adult and youth member Scouts in Queensland. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Scouting traditions have been in Australia for over 100 years and we have developed a strong, fun program based on the needs of todayâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s youth,â&#x20AC;? she said.

Todayâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Scouts can take part in an extraordinary variety of outdoor activities, from â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;traditional Scouting skillsâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; such as camping and bushcraft, through to more extreme challenges such as abseiling, overnight hiking, rafting, canoeing, canyoning, snow activities, rock climbing, sailing...even flying!

Scouts can get involved in performing arts, leadership development, community service, amateur radio operation, environmental projects, large-scale Australian events such as Cuborees, Jamborees and Ventures, international events, and service projects in developing countries. Scouts also learn valuable practical skills such as first aid and cooking...and fun skills, like how to build a ballista and fire wet sponges at their mates!

Local Scout groups of Camira, Goodna and Redbank Plains are enjoying an increase in numbers and would also welcome anyone interested in becoming a leader.

Leaders are crucial to the success of the Scouting Movement. Leaders have access to a wide variety of resources, an opportunity to give back to the community, and the experience to educate Youth Members in the values and skills most important for being a good citizen.

Small shop, big contributions For over 20 years, one small shop almost hidden away in Kruger Shopping Village, has been helping individuals in need in the Ipswich area.

The charity Ipswich Community Care Fund (ICCF)was founded by the late Mayoress Glenis Nugent and still carries the values and charter with which it began and still enjoys the support of the Ipswich City Council today.

The shop in Kruger sells secondhand clothes, bric-a-brac, books and other secondhand goods, with all proceeds after costs going directly to individuals in need.

Professionals such as physiotherapist, education specialists or occupational therapists refer clients to the committee members via an application for financial assistance.

On average, the ICCF committee approve and action six to eight applications a month, giving approximately $30 000 over the course of a year. Ways the funds are used vary from the purchase of a shower hoist for a nursing home, contributing to the purchase of motorised wheelchairs, donation to a bathroom renovation for a family with two children with disabilities, and the Fund automatically gives emergency gift cards to victims of house fires in Ipswich.

In order to keep up this valuable service to individuals, the shop accepts donations which they can then sell in the shop to create the necessary funds to assist those in need. If you have clothes, books, household items or bric-a-brac that are in good condition, the shop is open Monday to Friday 8.30am - 4.30am and Saturday 8.30am - noon with donations accepted on any day.

(Please note that space is at a premium, so staff cannot accept large donations at any one time.) The committee are also keen to hear from anyone interested in volunteering their time to work in the shop. For more information, contact Marie on 3288 1183.

The heart is a four chambered muscular organ that functions to pump blood around the body. Heart failure occurs when the heart fails to pump enough blood to meet the body’s demands. This causes changes in the body as it tries to support a faltering system. These changes include increased blood pressure, increased heart rate and fluid retention.

Heart disease can have many origins. It can be caused by changes in the heart’s muscular walls, defects of the valves separating the chambers of the heart or narrowing of the vessels leaving the heart. As with humans, heart abnormalities can exist at birth or can develop late in life and of course in pets, heartworm can be a contributing factor.

When the heart is unable to function correctly, there is a build up of fluid pressure within the circulatory system. This can cause “leakage” of fluid into the chest or abdomen and is responsible for many of the clinical signs seen with heart disease. These signs include: • coughing and difficulty breathing • engorgement of veins (often can be seen in the jugular vein in the neck) • swollen abdomen (ascites - fluid in the abdominal cavity) • enlarged liver • weight loss • decreased exercise tolerance - the dog tires easily • pale or purple mucous membranes • cool extremities (toes, tips of ears etc) • fluid swelling of lower limbs If you suspect your pet is suffering heart disease, it is wise to have it examined by your veterinarian. Diagnosis of heart disease begins with a thorough physical examination.

Listening to the patient’s chest with a stethoscope can allow the veterinarian to identify any abnormal heart sounds, rhythms or lung sounds. If an abnormality is suspected, the next step is to x-ray the chest. Chest x-rays show the size and shape of the heart silhouette, any blood vessel enlargement within the chest and any changes in the lungs.

Some heart diseases can be diagnosed with the above, but there are other tests that can help further define the problems.

Ultrasound of the heart is a technique that is very useful.

It is used to see the size of the heart chambers, the degree of contraction of the heart and more advanced ultrasound machines can even show the direction of blood flow through the heart.

An ECG is another way to investigate heart disease. This device records the electrical impulses across the heart as nerves fire to stimulate the heart to beat. ECG’s are useful to determine any changes in the heart’s rhythm and can give an indication of changes of heart chamber size.

Other tests such as blood and urine tests can help determine changes caused by heart disease and are often recommended before therapy for heart disease is started. Many different therapies for heart disease are available depending on the type and severity of the disorder. Most pets with mild heart disease respond well to therapy and can have an extended lifespan with treatment. Unfortunately, many heart conditions are progressive; this is why diagnosis of heart disease can be very important to give a more accurate prognosis. Therapy for heart disease is lifelong and generally requires regular rechecks to assess the stage of heart disease and any changes occurring.

A footbridge in Robelle Domain has been named Mahatma Gandhi Bridge in memory of the leader of India’s independence movement and as a place to highlight peace and harmony between people of different nations. The official naming ceremony was held on the anniversary of Gandhi’s death at the hands of a fanatic on January 30, 1948.

“Beyond the shores of India, Gandhi has become an inspiration for millions of people around the world,” said Mayor Paul Pisasale.

“This footbridge represents those who inspire our community to greatness, no matter their race, religion or political background. The Mahatma Gandhi Bridge is also our city’s recognition of the contribution made to the harmony and diversity of our community by people of Indian origin.”

Councillor David Morrison was also present at the naming ceremony and met the granddaughter of Mahatma Gandhi, Ela Gandhi.

“It was a privilege to meet Ela Gandhi, granddaughter of Mahatma Gandhi. Ela is a very humble lady who has similar values to her grandfather. She is a lady of strong conviction and has been imprisoned in South Africa and met Nelson Mandela.

“I asked Ela which of her grandfather’s well known quotes was her favourite. Ela replied with ‘Be the change you want to see in the world.’”

Cr Morrison plans to include other inspirational quotes on the approaching walls to the bridge in due time.

New development in Augustine Heights to accommodate growth Augustine Heights is set to continue its rapid growth with council giving the green light to an expansion of the Augustine Heights Estate off Benezet Drive.

The site is over 50 hectares of land bound by the existing Augustine Heights residential estate to the north, the future extension of Mt Juillerat Drive to the south, Woogaroo Creek to the east and Keidges Road to the west.

The previous stages of the residential development, some of which are currently under construction, include 352 lots across fourteen stages.

“So with the combined developments we are talking about well over 477 new homes, which is an absolutely huge boost to the area,” said Planning and Development Committee Chairperson Councillor Paul Tully.

“New residents will be able to choose from a range of different housing styles and sizes to meet the current and future needs of their families. With lot sizes ranging from 390m2 to 880m2 and average approximately 520m2, there will be a home to suit anyone.

“Also included is a new park and BBQ facility along the banks of Woogaroo Creek for outdoor recreation.

“More and more families are electing to call Augustine Heights home because of our fantastic lifestyle. This development is a welcome addition to the local area and will accommodate the strong growth predicted for the suburb.”

Cuts for a Cause helps kids back to school We s t s i d e C o m m u n i t y C a r e organisers of the third Annual Cuts for a Cause are excited that the event has been the most successful to date with funds raised tipping over $4000. This amount is enough to sponsor 40 local families by giving them $100 grants to help with back to school costs.

Phil Cutcliffe said, “This was due to the amazing support of three groups of people.

“Firstly, we would like to thank the supporting Salons who raised close to $2000 - Epic Hair Designs who took out the Golden Scissors award again this year raising ($350), Sassy Skin and Beauty, The Links Pet Centre, Debonaire Dogs, Optimal Hair and Beauty, Gaye’s Hair Fashions, Lole’s Barber Shop and Max’s Barber Shop.

“Secondly we would like to thank our five hairdressers who donated their time along with other providers to do $10 basic cuts. Narissa Lewis, Brooke Sopalu, Kylie McQuilty, Joyclyn Calvin and Karen Frahm did over 100 cuts and raised $1250 supported by Sheree Niuelua (nails), and Ronelle Dempers (massage), Mortorama City Holden (Sausage Sizzle), and Kessa’s Coffee.

“The third group of people to thank are those who came forward to give a minimum $100 donation to help send families back to school. These include Paul Pisasale, Shawdon services and Aussie Skip Bags. The day was an amazing success.”

Parking on footpaths Parking on footpaths, driveways or nature strips is an offence under the State Transport Operations (Road Use Management) Act and is enforced by local councils and police. Ipswich City Council takes the safety of the community in local neighbourhood streets and around schools seriously as illegal and unsafe parking on footpaths and driveways leaves pedestrians with no choice but to walk on the road and reduces visibility when entering and exiting a property. Footpaths and nature strips are not designed for cars or trucks as this can cause rutting, uneven walking surfaces and possible damage to underground services.

Local development update Earthworks have commenced on the 16,000 square metre Bunnings warehouse site at Springfield Central. The site, on the corner of Main Street and Southern Cross Circuit (opposite Masters), has been cleared and construction will commence in the near future. Bunnings’ new Springfield Central store will include a retail warehouse, timber and trade supplies, garden centre, on-site cafe and a charitable fundraising and community service barbecue area.

Peter McMahon’s Swim Factory is well underway and is expected to open in early April 2015. The Swim Factory is located on Southern Cross Circuit at the rear of Orion Springfield Central in the vicinity of the Aldi and Spotlight carpark. This purpose-built indoor pool facility will offer swimming lessons for infants, children and adults as well as pool parties, aqua aerobics and lap swimming.

Make a difference in Springfield - join Soroptimist International Soroptimist International, a worldwide wide organisation for women in management nt and the professions, is commencing its second year of building a club in the Springfield area. Operating in 124 countries, members work with like-minded women on local and international projects and enjoy variouss d social activities within their club and with other members of the wider Soroptimist organisation.

During 2014, the Springfield group worked to educate, empower and enable others through three local projects.

In November, Life Diary resources for children were supplied to the local Child Safety Support Services.

Members also worked with Springfield author, Luise Manning to highlight the road safety issue of low speed vehicle run-overs of under 5s in car parks and driveways.

The group sourced grants, hosted a public forum to explore the issue and seek solutions, and packaged brochures and decals that were distributed with Luiseâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s book, â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;Hold my handâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;, to local kindys and child care centres. The project will continue in 2015.

In June, the group hosted an informative High Tea where well-known Butterfly Wings Child Parent Programs educator, Gwen Raynor engaged participants in a number of activities. Her research based community parenting programs help very young children and adults form secure attachments, and are widely used in South-East Queensland.

Members of nine South Queensland clubs will be attending the three day Region Conference at the Riverglenn Centre at Indooroopilly from March 13 â&#x20AC;&#x201C; 15, and many local Soroptimists will also be attending the international conference in Istanbul in July.

I recently attended the launch of the 2015 Discover Ipswich Guide. Tourism is big business for Ipswich, contributing $136 million every year to our local economy. This guide will be distributed throughout visitor information centres in Queensland, northern New South Wales and Brisbane hotels and airports, but it is not just for visitors.

Even if you have lived in Ipswich all your life, you still might find an undiscovered treasure or new experience in the guide, so head to the Visitor Information Centre to pick up your copy.

People who attended the launch also got a sneak peek at the Pumpyard Bar and Brewery, Ipswich’s very own home of craft beer. It set to open soon at 88 Limestone Street and it is a beauty.

A foot bridge in Robelle Domain, Springfield Central has been given the official name of the Mahatma Gandhi Bridge in memory of this great man and as a place to highlight peace and harmony between people of different nations.

Over time, this bridge will become the focus point to acknowledge people who inspire others to contribute to the world around them in a positive way.

Following the naming ceremony, we had a very special visitor to the Gandhi Inspiration Bridge. Ela Gandhi, a peace activist and former Member of Parliament in South Africa from 1994 to 2004 and Mahatma Gandhi’s granddaughter, took the time to visit our bridge while she was in Australia.

Ela recently delivered the annual Gandhi Oration at the University of New South Wales. She is an amazing woman and it was an absolute privilege to meet her.

What a wonderful 2014 we had at the club house as well as outings, Christmas in July and the big trip to Frazer Island and Rockhampton! We have lots planned for 2015, so why not join us? THE CREATIVE heART February marks the Creative HeARTâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s first birthday. The local creativesâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; close relations with the Cerebral Palsy League (CPL) Springfield service commenced late last year and is already bringing first fruits.

Thanks to CPLâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s generous support, the group has started 2015 on a busy note launching the first creative workshops program in and for the community.

The workshops will be run from the CPL Springfieldâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s service. â&#x20AC;&#x153;We feel that the programâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s central location will attract our local community to have a go and see what is available and enjoy themselves,â&#x20AC;? said Jolanta Szymczyk, the driver behind the Creative HeARTâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s presence in the community.

The program is open to general public on the weekends while CPLâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s clients will access the workshops during the week. â&#x20AC;&#x153;We are very supportive of this program,â&#x20AC;? said CPLâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Support in the Community Manager, Laurel Evans. â&#x20AC;&#x153;We are passionate about this place, the neighbourhood and the people. The local Rotary Club of Greater Springfield recently conducted its first weekly meeting of the year with partners and friends at Jimmy Sirisomphone’s Thai Emperor at Brookwater.

The 23 members and guests enjoyed Jimmy’s friendly hospitality including excellent food and great service, thus supporting Thai Emperor’s reputation as the best and friendliest Thai restaurant in the district.

The Rotary Club of Greater Springfield conducts meetings at local Springfield venues not just to support local business but also to spread the fellowship which is Rotary and promote the reason for becoming a Rotarian. This reason being the chance to do something for somebody else and to experience the self-fulfilment that comes from the process. It is a richly rewarding activity.

Club President Keith Reinke said the club is certainly keeping very busy with support for various activities and programmes over the past year and into the next.

He encouraged members to stay focused with the challenge to engage others through effort and commitment to provide Service Above Self to change lives and provide a better place for our local and international community.

More potential projects are being planned and as such, the club needs to attract more enthusiastic members to engage in these new projects and other initiatives.

Rotary is the world’s first service club organization, with more than 1.2 million members in 33,000 clubs worldwide. Rotary club members just like the members of the local Rotary Club of Greater Springfield are volunteers who work locally, regionally, and internationally to combat hunger, improve health and sanitation, provide education and job training, promote peace, disaster relief and eradicate polio under the motto Service Above Self.

This is our challenge and we invite you to embrace Rotary and join with likeminded people to engage in an activity which is both fulfilling and rewarding. Take up the challenge and just give us a call and come along to our weekly meetings. You will be most welcome.

Greetings, its back to school for the children and back to normal for grandparents on child-minding duty. For seniors, its back to normal too as seniors clubs start up for the new year. At the time of writing this the Queensland State election results were unknown. National Seniors held a successful Policy Forum at the Richland’s Lions Club for members and the local community, thanks to the Forest Lake Branch for pulling this event together at such short notice. National Seniors has several roles, policy being one of them, at the branch level the main focus is on providing social activities for the over fifties.

The first branch activity for the year, early February was a Day Trippers outing to GoMA at Southbank to visit the Japanese costume exhibition and to lunch at the Art Gallery. The first branch meeting will be on Tuesday 17th February and will be held at the Goodna Leagues Club, Brisbane Terrace, Goodna. Registration is at 10.00am with the meeting commencing at 10.30am. Guest article will be Romain, popular and versatile entertainer. This will be followed by a sausage sizzle hosted by the committee.

In March, the Social Club will meet for coffee at the Lotus Café, Springfield Central on Wednesday 4th March at 10.00am; this is a new venue and we shall try it out. The following week on Tuesday 11 March the Day Trippers will tour the XXXX Brewery.

This should be an interesting event with members already registered to attend.

Fun-draising for a good cause This May, for a whole week, a group of intrepid riders will travel by camel-back from Noosa to Australia Zoo on a five-day trek of fun and fundraising to benefit children with disabilities throughout Brisbane for the MontroseAccess ‘Glamel Trek’.

The scenic itinerary is a special kind of road trip through some of the Sunshine Coast’s most famous locations from Inskip Point to finish at the hinterland.

It’s also a once-only opportunity for sponsors to ‘buy’ a camel and join the trek as riders or to send a friend and support one of Queensland’s longest established children’s charities.

The 7 Sunrise breakfast team will be joining the journey with a live cross to the Trekkers each morning and riders will be treated to a cooked breakfast each day by Jake and Elle, the 2013 My Kitchen Rules finalists.

The Trek is seeking sponsors now to participate for the entire 5-day trek for $10,000, 1-day for $2,500 or to partake in an extremely unique experience as a camel-wrangler for the week for just $2, 000! Each camel can carry up to two people and camels can be themed, dressed and logo-ed!

Riders can also raise funds through a dedicated fundraising website.

Each day, the local community, schools and MontroseAccess clients are invited to greet the camels and riders along their journey and the itinerary features a cultural, environmental and local food and wine trail through the Sunshine Coast.

Rail vital for densification increase I remember very clearly voting with Council in the early 2000s to increase the population densification of the Greater Springfield Area from 45 000 to 86 000.

The population increase was approved by Council on one major decision that it could not happen unless rail was brought to Springfield Central. Rail is the most reliable form of public transport and public transport is vital in an area planned for 86 000 to call home.

Springfield Central Station was always a given once the State Government made the bold decision to bring the rail from Darra. The second station at Springfield was always in the balance, thankfully, after many meetings, the State Government decided to construct them both from day one.

The rail has been very well received and used by the community.

Construction commences in 2012 at Springfield Central Station.

In February 2015, the rail line is a reality and well used by the local community.
