Children’s charity celebrates 80 years

One of Queensland’s longest established children’s charities, MontroseAccess will celebrate 80 years caring for children with disabilities on December 1. Former clients, carers and staff from across Queensland are invited to join the party, witness the preparation of a time capsule on the organisation’s historic Corinda site and provide photos or memorabilia for preservation.

Hello Readers Science plays an increasingly important role in finding the answers to some of the big questions impacting the world today. A report by the Australian Academy of Science argues that Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths (STEM) are the key to finding solutions to the global challenges we now face. It will be important that students graduating high school in Australia are choosing to study Science courses at university. This is particularly so, as the future prosperity of Australia is based on innovation and a skilled workforce.

The study shows that there has been a significant decline in the proportion of high school students choosing Physics, Chemistry and Biology courses in Years 11 and 12 in the past couple of decades. The study also found that around two thirds of Year 10 students choosing no senior science made this decision principally because they could not picture themselves as scientists.

Time is the coin of your life. It is the only coin you have, and only you can determine how it will be spent. Be careful lest you let other people spend it for you. ~ Carl Sandburg.

Recently, our eldest child turned 23. Twenty. Three.

Sometimes the passage of time reaches up and slaps you in the face, and this was one of those times!

Graham and I sat and wondered where the time had gone, reminiscing about his childhood, feeling every inch the cliche, as we clucked our tongues about how it felt like only yesterday we were teaching him to ride a bike, urging him to eat his veggies and threatening him with loss of pocket money for not tidying up his room.

I remember so well how I would roll my eyes, when he was just three or four years old, at those middle aged seniors who would gently admonish my complaining with words that it would all go by so fast. And now, here I am crying into my wine that he’s all grown up in the blink of an eye!

Time is a slippery customer, isn’t it? Time can tick by in slow motion when we’re counting down to that long awaited holiday, only to speed up once it finally arrives.

And the truth, as we know of course, is that it doesn’t change at all (yes, yes all you science-y folk, I know it does sometimes incrementally increase or decrease but it’s not like it’s noticeable!). It marches on, regardless of whether we want it to, or if we are ready to move with it.

Yet, the maxim that instructs us to ‘make the most of it’ is somewhat vague and hard to pin down, don’t you think?

What does it look like when we are ‘making the most of it’?

How do we actively appreciate the moments as they go by?

It’s not as if we can hold on to the moment any longer simply by appreciating it.

For me, it’s all tied up with the other great ideal of living with no regrets. We feel we haven’t ‘made the most’ of a situation if we look back and wish we’d done it differently, wish we’d paid more attention or just enjoyed that moment.

If we can look back on times in our life and know that we enjoyed it, that we were present in those moments ie that we ‘made the most’ of them, then we are unlikely to have regrets. And regrets are what make us feel like time has cheated us and moved too fast.

It’s satisfying to look back on a time in your life and know that you squeezed every bit of fun and enjoyment out of it and truly savoured it. Knowing you ‘made the most of it’ certainly makes the passage of time a little easier to take.

And as for us and our boy…well, who doesn’t have parenting regrets, especially with your first child? But, I think he turned out okay and if we failed to make the most of every second of his childhood, we’ll make up for it by making the most of watching him continue to grow into a man.

As Carl Sandburg says in the quote, time is our coin.

Catch the early signs

Your dog or cat can get the same sort of diseases that we get as humans, particularly as they age. Like us, our pets are living longer and therefore can develop heart disease, kidney failure, respiratory disease, urinary incontinence, and all forms of cancer. Your pet on average lives 10-14 years, depending on the breed and size, and for cats it is often longer, so they are middle aged or seniors at seven years and by 10 often show signs of some form of chronic disease.

If we catch the early signs of a problem, then we have a better chance of diagnosing what is wrong, treating it and working out a plan for lifestyle changes and management.

The early signs of cardiac disease may include: a cough especially at night; reluctance to exercise and getting tired more easily; poor appetite; laboured breathing; fainting; weight loss; enlarged abdomen; and general weakness.

Heart failure is a condition that affects the pumping action of the heart. It often results in congestion in the lungs and can be referred to as congestive heart failure. With heart failure, the heart cannot pump blood around the body efficiently, which results in reducing the amount of blood that is pumped out of the heart.

Without treatment, the condition does get progressively worse, with your dog feeling more unwell and unable to do normal things. Often we put this down to old age but it is a good idea to have your pet checked out by a vet because with treatment they feel better and their life is prolonged.

In small dogs, mitral valve disease is a common cause of heart failure. In this condition, the heart valve becomes thickened and fails to keep an effective seal between the heart chambers. The leaking blood can create a specific sound called a ‘murmur ’ and can eventually lead to heart failure. The breeds more commonly at risk are Cavalier King Charles Spaniels, poodles, schnauzer, Chihuahua, fox terriers and Jack Russell terriers. Your vet will listen to your dogs heart, perhaps take X-Rays and prescribe medication.

Remember, if detected early, cases of heart failure are much easier to manage.

Urinary incontinence is often seen in spayed bitches, dogs over six-seven years, mid and large breeds, and overweight dogs. The signs you see can be bed wetting, soiled hair at back end, scalding around bottom, or excessive licking, strong unpleasant odour. Once again, this is a treatable condition, so get a check up and talk to your vet about the symptoms and treatment.

Kidney disease is often first noticed as increased water intake and more frequent urination, although weight loss, and change in behaviour are often seen.

There are blood tests that can diagnose this condition and put it in a range from acute episode to chronic and both need treatment and change in diet to maximise your pets recovery and ongoing monitoring is always a good idea.

Independent Public School Milton Dick model for Corinda SHS Councillor for Richlands Ward

Member for Mount Ommaney, Tarnya Smith has congratulated Corinda State High School and Middle Park State School on being named among 54 Queensland state schools to adopt the Independent Public Schools model from the start of 2014.

The local schools were selected from more than 100 expressions of interest state wide.

“As Independent Public Schools, Corinda State High School and Middle Park State School will be well-placed to benefit from increased autonomy to deliver the best possible outcomes for their students and this community,” Mrs Smith said.

“With greater input from parents, teachers and community members, the schools will have more freedom to shape their own direction and make decisions that will directly benefit their students. Over time, I have no doubt this will lead to better innovation, stronger partnerships with industry and the community and the tailoring of school programs.

“Our local schools are already enjoying a great deal of autonomy and a number of new measures have been announced recently to further reduce the administrative burden for all state schools,”she said.

The Queensland Government is investing $21 million in establishing 120 Independent Public Schools by 2016.

And sadly the scrub turkeys seem to be scoring all over the garden!

These front row foragers are determined to cling to their early gains and refuse to give ground, despite some valiant defence from the gardeners in the form of mesh and netting.

The lure of rotting mulch and the treasure trove of goodies that lie buried beneath have proven to be an irresistible attraction to these foraging fowls.

A quick taste of the deliciously fresh, newly dug potatoes have the scrub turkeys throwing everything into the game, and they are determined to get their fair share of the spoils.

In any other situation you would have to admire their persistence but in a case of us or them – to the winner the spoils – it is a battle that both sides are determined to win.

At last tally, the scrub turkeys had taken out the entire crop of potatoes and were showing no sign of ‘quitting while they were ahead’. The gardeners, on the other hand, have been ruminating on the ‘what ifs’ of the potato crop and pitting their wits against these persistent birds.

The beans and sweet potatoes are pushing their way upwards through a plastic grill which curtails the turkey’s ability to scratch up the plants and seems to have turned the tide in the gardeners favour (at least for the moment).

Bird netting, strategically placed over the strawberry plants seems to be having some success. Also holding their own are the rosella canes, standing proudly amongst an undisturbed, well mulched garden.

So...the battle lines are clearly drawn and from this gardener’s perspective it looks like becoming a long and drawn out battle to be waged, with the gardener’s relying on quick thinking and dogged determination to reap a harvest. No one should underestimate the cunning and persistence of the scrub turkey...they haven’t been around this long without learning a few things about survival of the fittest and the quickest way to a free feed.

And these pesky turkeys are more than happy to exploit their protected status...they aren’t going anywhere but then again, neither are the gardeners!

Graceville Train Station Upgrade I’m pleased to announce that planning has started for an upgrade of Graceville train station. This upgrade will include lifts and allow easier access to platforms for passengers travelling with prams, small children or luggage, and improve safety. This is great news for train passengers who require assistance with mobility and those with a disability.

Graceville is one of 31 stations across the network that has stairs-only access. It is in urgent need of an upgrade as it is one of three stations in a row – along with Chelmer and Sherwood – that doesn’t have lifts or wheelchair friendly ramps. I look forward to releasing the concept designs for feedback early in 2014 and for construction to begin later next year.

Gambling Community Benefit Fund Recipients Successful applicants of Round 77 of the Gambling Community Benefit Fund were recently announced. Congratulations to the Rotary Club of Brisbane Taylor Bridge who were granted $8835 to purchase a trailer and equipment for their club and Staverton Kindergarten, Chelmer, who will receive $29 843 to upgrade their playground.

Queensland Plan Brisbane Summit Your local delegates and I attended the second and final summit at Brisbane Convention centre last month. This summit provided the opportunity for all of the Mackay Summit participants to come together again to review the key focus areas emerging from The Queensland Plan feedback. We discussed what it means for Queensland, how we will seize the opportunities and confront the challenges, and identify the steps required to deliver our 30-year vision. I would like to thank the Indooroopilly delegates for giving up their time to participate in this exciting initiative and all Indooroopilly constituents who contributed their thoughts and ideas to the plan.

The Cuckoo’s Calling by Robert Galbraith

I’m going to shock you all by telling you that I have never read JK Rowling’s Harry Potter series but it’s true! So when her latest offering of crime fiction came my way, I was a bit ho-hum about it.

I’ll admit that the opening paragraphs didn’t grab me and I was a little under-whelmed given her writing credentials but on the whole, it’s a good crime story.

Private investigator Cormoran Strike is a likeable, if not predictable, character, putting us at ease by way of a limp and less-than-Hollywood looks. A man in trouble, Strike grabs at the chance of making some decent money and thus begins his investigation into the death of international model Lula Landry.

Rowling creates a character that leaves plenty of room for a sequel within a good story line, even if the writing is a little too laborious in parts. The Cuckoo’s Calling is available from Dymocks for $29.99RRP.

Burial Rites by Hannah Kent

I like to support fellow Aussie’s, so when the debut novel, Burial Rites, landed in my hands I was delighted to see that the author, Hannah Kent, is a 28 year old from Adelaide.

While spending time in Iceland as a teenager, the author heard the tale of Agnes Magnusdottir and returned to Australia with a story brewing. Burial Rites is that story, and brings to life the true events surrounding the conviction of Agnes in 1829. Accused of murder, the story of Agnes unfolds as she works alongside a local family on their farm in the harsh and unforgiving landscape of Iceland in the 1800’s.

With an execution date on the horizon, Agnes requests a young, inexperienced reverend, Toti, to give her Godly counsel during whatever time she has left. The reverend listens as the story of Agnes’ life is slowly revealed. Told with sensitivity and beautiful prose, Burial Rites is a masterful telling of life in the 1800’s in Iceland, of the society and the poignant real events of one woman.

I loved this story. It will move you, cause you to question beliefs and will resonate with you long after the last page is turned.

I thoroughly enjoyed reading and seeing life in the villages and farms in Iceland in years gone by, and gained, all over again, an appreciation of our modern way of life. This is an impressive debut novel from author Hannah Kent, and I’ll certainly be on the look out for her next novel. Sherwood Probus Club Update Retirement – everybody’s doing it – but Probus does it better.

A day at the races at Doomben Racetrack was a most enjoyable outing recently. It was a good chance to enjoy fellowship, friendship and fun without losing or winning a fortune.

A trip to Maleny is planned for early November to include the garden group and other interested club members.

They are to visit Maleny Botanic Gardens and some other attractions in the area.

There are some great musical productions coming to QPAC’s Lyric Theatre in coming months. Some members did enjoy “In the Mood” with the String of Pearls Orchestra. The standing ovation for the cast was well deserved.

Members of the theatre group will be attending the Lord Mayor’s Senior’s Christmas Parties in the refurbished City Hall in early December. These parties are in recognition of the contribution that seniors have made to the community over their lifetime.

Twelfth Night Theatre’s production of “The Book Club” stars Amanda Muggleton. Australia’s leading stage actress returns to this brilliantly scripted star role to give us a hysterically funny peek behind the closed doors of suburbia.

It was an interesting example of how many people in book clubs interact and behave. Our book group members went along, together with other club members, to see who they recognised.

The book group will be having their Christmas lunch at the end of the month. They will be discussing what members are currently reading.

A recent speaker was Les Ambor who enthralled us with stories of “Fun in Pawn-broking”. October’s speaker told us all about the National Amateur Watch and Clock Collectors Club. Our speaker for November will be Ian Hart of Prescare about the new buildings at Kingsford Terrace Retirement Village, formerly Hopetoun at Corinda.

Sherwood Probus meets on the 3rd Friday of the month (except December) at 10am at Sherwood AFL Club. Our membership is drawn from the area from Indooroopilly to Oxley, the Centenary suburbs and Moorooka/Yeronga area.

This Friday’s Sherwood Community Festival is a great place to meet your next door neighbours!

No, we aren’t just talking about your friends who happen to live in the same street. We’re talking about our two and four-legged friends, who call the Sherwood Arboretum home.

It doesn’t take long to discover that our heritage-listed Arboretum is much more than an impressive collection of more than 1000 Australian native trees.

As a local catchment, the Sherwood Arboretum, with its wetlands, protected islands and creeks, nurtures a wide variety of Australian wildlife from mosscovered turtles to the eye-catching Superb Fairy-wren.

Thanks to Council’s Habitat Brisbane program, the Friends of Sherwood Arboretum Association (FOSA) will give you the chance to meet some of our local wildlife at its stall beside the Westpac Bank.

With the experienced help of Geckoes Wildlife Presentations, the FOSA stall James and Lachlan meet Ruby. will be an excellent opportunity, particularly for children, to learn more about our creatures, great and small.

The display, between 6pm and 8.30pm, highlights the value of volunteering just two hours of your time each month to help improve this wonderful home to our bird life and diverse Australian native animals.

Over the next year, FOSA and Habitat Brisbane will be working in partnership to start developing ‘a green pathway’ of low-level shrubs to allow bush birds and native animals to move safely between the Brisbane River ‘wildlife corridor’ and the wetlands. The project is part of a wetlands concept plan, developed by FOSA with Council support, to achieve improved wildlife protection, better water quality and less silting of the two lakes.

If you would like to learn more, visit the FOSA stall or, better still, join our volunteers at 8am at the Joseph Street entry to the Sherwood Arboretum on the third Sunday of each month for just two hours.

Meals on Wheels needs your help

Sherwood District Meals on Wheels urgently needs new volunteer drivers and deliverers for our area. The usual commitment required is just once a month and deliveries are weekdays from 9-10am.

For anyone interested in receiving meals, clients do not need a doctor’s referral and can order meals every day or just for the days they need. The summer menu includes new healthy summer salads.

As recently promoted, new centres are planned for the nation that will link wounded servicemen and women with employment services, family support and rehabilitation.

“Soldier On” is an independent charity dedicated to the rehabilitation of contemporary veterans of the recent ADF deployments.

In Queensland the RSL has established “Mates4Mates” which provides support for veterans with physical rehabilitation as well as having a full time psychologist on staff to assist both veterans and their families in the overall rehabilitation of the veteran.

There has been about 250 veterans wounded in Afghanistan as well as thousands who bear the mental scars of PTSD from their service. The RSL has also provided financial support for Soldier Recovery Centres on base at Enoggera and Townsville. Some serving soldiers are reluctant utilise the support services within the ADF for fear of it affecting their career prospects. Whilst I am told that this is not so, they should be aware of the alternatives available in the form of Mates4Mates and “Soldier On”.

If there are veterans in our local community they should also utilise the services of our RSL Sub-branch. We are always there to provide advice and assistance to them. I will end by reminding everyone of our Remembrance Day service which will commence at 10.30 am on Monday the 11th of November at the Sub-branch at 2 Clewley Street Corinda. If you can buy a poppy or a badge from any of our badge sellers you will also be contributing to our efforts on behalf of veterans.

We have a monthly speaker program in place with topics this year ranging from how the modern library will function in the future, the story of Walter Taylor’s life and the bridges and buildings which he built, an insight into Milperra School in Chelmer, and the history and workings of radio station 4MBS – Classic FM. At our October meeting, Justin Howes enlightened us about his work in the application of forensic DNA profiling in Queensland.

Every month we come together to learn something new and keep the brain active and to enjoy some fellowship over morning tea. The committee is currently busy organising our first Christmas lunch at a local venue after our November meeting.

Our very busy Outings Officer has organised a trip in November on the Citycat to New Farm Park and a walk to the Merthyr Bowls Club for lunch where we can enjoy the magnificent views of the Brisbane River. January will see our members at the Queensland Tennis Centre for an exciting day of tennis at The Queensland Open.

The Probus Club of Chelmer and District meets at 9.30am on the fourth Wednesday of each month at Corinda Bowls Club, Hall Ave, Corinda and welcomes retired men and women who wish to meet for club meetings and other activities with like-minded retirees.
