Petition calling for early primary education reform reaches 3000 Education advocacy group, Protecting Childhood, is proud to announce that its Queensland Parliament e-petition, Age-appropriate education for happy, healthy children and teachers has passed 3000 signatures, recently rising by more than 1200.

Protecting Childhood, which formed in March 2016, is a collaboration of parents, past and present teachers and education professionals, psychologists and academics concerned with the short and long term impacts of Australia’s increasingly fear-driven, test-focussed, standardised school system.

Protecting Childhood has amassed over 2900 followers, led by an executive committee of six, including retired teacher of 30 years Kathy Margolis, and with 23 area representatives Australia-wide.

The groups ambassadors include respected psychologists and authors, Steve Biddulph and Robin Grille and child advocate, Maggie Dent.

A mounting body of evidence indicates that a later start of formal learning indicates better long term results. However, Queensland prep students are enrolled as young as 4.5 years of age and subjected to formal learning conditions from day one.

Protecting Childhood’s petition, backed by Mount Ommaney State MP Tarnya Smith, is calling for the Queensland Parliament to conduct an inquiry into the impact of the national curriculum implementation and top down pressure, and to observe international best practice and ensure: • children are six years of age or older to commence being formally taught an incremental age-appropriate national curriculum; • all learning prior to age six, including prep, is play-based; • the data collection and reporting burden on teachers is reduced to maximise engaged teaching time.

The petition closes on 5th August this year and is expected to be tabled in State Parliament by Mrs Smith the week beginning 15th August.

QCWA - much more than tea and scones You may think that the Country Women’s Association (CWA) is just all tea and scones, but the organisation is so much more than that. The Queensland CWA began in 1922 and is the largest women’s organisation in Queensland with branches from Mt Isa to Quilpie and Cooktown to Coolangatta. QCWA is about friendship, community and being connected. It offers a wide range of activities tailored to the interests of local members. It also offers friendship and the opportunity to contribute to local, national and international communities.

Locally, the Centenary branch of the QCWA meet monthly and enjoy a variety of activities. July’s meeting was held at Graziers Steak house, Centenary Tavern where 16 members had a very convivial meeting, getting to know some newer faces and reporting back on the very successful Trivia night. Club members would like to thank all the members of the local community who supported this event. The next meeting on August 2nd at Mount Ommaney Library, meeting at 6pm for 6.30pm start, will be a musical appreciation evening and visitors are welcome to attend.

QCWA is different things to different people. If you would like to make new friends, learn how to help others, listen to interesting people talk about their experiences, learn a new craft or brush up on an old one, why not consider joining this local group. Personally Speaking with Susannah Friis At the time of writing, the world is reeling from the senseless killings of over three hundred people in Turkey, France and America in the space of a few weeks.

If youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re anything like me, turning on the news at the best of times is an overwhelming experience and one which I often opt out of. But there is no avoiding the more recent tragedies. And in many ways, we shouldnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t avoid them.

Ignorance may be bliss more times than not but change only comes about through knowledge. As a society, we simply must face these things in order to begin the seemingly insurmountable task of changing them.

Having said that, it can feel like there is nothing we, that is, you and me - the average person in a three bedroom house in the suburbs, CAN do about whatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s going on in the wider world. All it seems to do is make us anxious, fearful and, if we allow it, increase our hesitancy to welcome and embrace people who are different to us, especially those of a different religious persuasion.

So how do we cope with this overload of bad news when it seems we canâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t actually change anything? When these things happen, our social media sites are flooded with this bad news, laments and commentary on the state of our societies, declarations of â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;virtualâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; support and...cat videos.

Lots and lots of cat videos.

I have to confess to moments of self righteous judgement as I scroll through my â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;newsfeedâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; on facebook in these times. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t they realise that another policeman has been shot dead in America?â&#x20AC;? â&#x20AC;&#x153;Havenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t they even heard about the massacre in Nice?â&#x20AC;? It seems to me that the amount of seemingly superficial â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;fluff â&#x20AC;&#x2122; increases in direct proportion to the amount of bad news. From â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;feel goodâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; inspirational videos to articles about random acts of kindness, to reports of particular kindness to animals and the obligatory aforementioned cat videos, itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s all there tucked between the hashtags of #blacklivesmatter, scaremongering about Muslims and arguments over American gun laws.

And then I realised why that is. We are all looking for a pressure release valve. We need to feel that there is something worth smiling about. That there is still good in this world. That we are not being overtaken by hate, prejudice and bigotry. That. There. Is. Hope.

If youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve read Manâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Search for Meaning by Viktor Frankl, a concentration camp survivor, youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ll know that his conclusion is that the biggest killer of the human spirit is hopelessness.

So rather than being superficial and shallow, those cat videos and inspirational videos are testaments to hope and they feed our souls in the face of times that seem desperately devoid of that valuable commodity.

So, letâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s help each other. Letâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s remind one another of the hope we have. May our conversations, both face to face and virtual, defy the evil in this world and be filled with encouragement, inspiration and hope. Oh and cats, donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t forget the cute cats!

National Seniors

If only those gusty westerly winds would slow down, it would be a lovely spring day outside, but then it is Ekka time and what else can we expect?

We will make up for it this year with all our extra Seniors Week activities being run through Seniors Week 13 – 21 August. Special things that we are doing this year are: Centenary National Seniors are holding a ‘Chicken Licken’ Picnic in the Park at Rocks Riverside Park on Tuesday 16th, 10am – 2pm; Tarnya Smith is holding a Seniors Morning Tea on Friday 19th at the Jindalee Hotel, 9.15am registration; and the Queensland Police Department are holding a Seniors’ Expo at Centenary State High School, 9am on Saturday 20th.

We invite Centenary seniors (50+) to join in all the fun. You can book by sending an email to marlene42@optusnet. com.au or leave a message on the answering machine at 3279 1444 and leave your name and contact details. These are all totally free events.

Last month we went off to Tewantin in the Sunshine Coast area for a ‘Christmas in July’ party. It was terrific. There were three big buses full of happy people chatting and laughing. Next month we are off to Kilcoy to investigate the rumours that there are Yowies there.

Aside from all this frivolity, we still have our normal monthly program. Monday is exercise time with Steady Steps.

The number of attendees here keeps growing. I think we’ll have to get a larger hall before much longer. Tuesdays are for getting out and about with either a Coach Trip or Explorer Trip around Brisbane. Wednesdays we have an Evening event. Thursdays we play MahJong or have Book Club and on Fridays we suddenly remember that we do have a home that needs some attention. But no, we still haven’t finished yet. Saturday and Sunday, we have live theatre at two playhouses and Sunday there are always Concerts going on in the parks.

We have found that life certainly gets better as you grow older and we’re enjoying it more because we don’t have to worry about everyday things like work. If you feel that you would like to join us, or just make enquiries to see if there’s something that you would like to become more involved in, please give me a call on 3279 1444 and leave a message on the answering machine if I can’t take your call. Little Free Libraries pop up locally

Some readers may have heard of The Little Free Library initiative that began in 2009 by American Todd Bol of Wisconsin. A tribute to his school teacher mother, the idea of a little wooden box stand on the streets with the concept of ‘take a book, leave a book’ began to catch on.

Now this worldwide phenomenon has reached the neighbouring suburb of Forest Lake with two such Little Free Libraries now in operation.

For Forest Lake’s first Little Free Library installer, Claire Miller, the library is the realisation of a dream to share books and the love of reading with others.

“Our Little Free Library, Charter Number 29173, was built by my husband Peter, with another one in the pipeline - based on the Harry Potter Knight Bus!” said Claire.

“To see the happiness and excitement that both children and adults have when they find a book they love is beyond rewarding. I love the way books have the ability to open the readers minds to different worlds and experiences and am so excited to be able to offer this experience to our community.

“The library is not just to encourage readers but it is giving neighbours an opportunity to get to know each other.”

Dianne Haire was inspired by Claire Miller’s instigation of a Little Free Library and also recognised the advantage of her close proximity to a local primary school.

“Children’s reading has always been important to me,” said Dianne. “I believe that if you start young and have a love of reading, it can help children in other areas of their schooling.

“All are welcome and there will be a range of books to suit all ages. There are no set up requirements or forms to fill out but if you like, leave a quick note in the visitors book.”

Dianne has also added a personal touch and created some bookmarks for people to take and use with the books.

Making moving day easier – adjusting pets to a new home Sinnamon Vet and Pet are moving just up the road to our own fabulous new premises at 62 Ashridge Road, Darra. A new vet emergency and specialist service will soon continue at our old premises in Jindalee Homemaker. This will be the closest dedicated vet emergency for the Brisbane and Western suburbs area - so watch this space!

Moving is both an exciting and stressful time for all involved and can be a little bewildering for our pets. Our own two practice cats will have some adjusting to do but, with plenty of garden space and lizards to hunt, we think they should approve.

There are several things you can do to make any pets transition to new premises a little easier.

During the period leading up to the move, vary your pets’ routines as little as possible. Providing them with some normal routines in terms of feeding, exercise and cuddles will help.

This gives them added security to help them feel less anxious as the moving boxes start to accumulate and they pick up the vibe that something is amiss. If you are using a travel carrier, put out the crate with the door open so your pet can get used to it well before the travel day. Consider taking your dog over to visit the new home before the actual move and, if possible, take a walk around the garden and surrounding streets to show them you are quite relaxed and happy in this new location.

Leave packing of favourite toys and beddings till last so they will have something familiar to smell in transit and on arrival.

Once at the new home, it’s best not to release cats until things have settled down noise and movement wise. Cats love to hide as a coping mechanism and it reduces their stress levels, so it’s best to confine them to one area for the first few days at least and let them venture out at their own pace, ensuring all doors and windows are kept shut. Over the next few days, make more areas of the house available while still allowing access to their ‘bolt hole’ should they choose to continue hiding for awhile.

A commercially available plug-in ‘appeasing pheromone’ diffuser for dogs and cats will give the pet a better sense of security and belonging to its new surroundings or if being boarded temporarily during the move.

Some pets struggle with actual car sickness or general travel anxiety on the car journey. The pheromone sprays can be applied inside vehicles, crates or onto blanket or a long lasting anti nausea tablet may need to be prescribed by the vet.

On relocation, it is not uncommon for many pets to want to scent mark to re- establish a new comfort zone. If you are lucky this may just mean rubbing up against furniture. Worse case it could lead to urine scent marking or clawing furniture.

It is important to nip this in the bud. Identify and chemically neutralize any urine sprayed area with an appropriate biological enzyme spray to avoid re-offending. The pheromone appeaser sprays yet again are useful as cats tend to either face mark or urine mark their property- but not both. The same goes for furniture clawing. If you do use a scratching post it needs to be placed in a prominent location not hidden away in a back room.

For animals still struggling longer term, we sometimes prescribe an anti anxiety medication. This may need to continue for several weeks during the adjustment period.

Out of adversity comes opportunity

enjamin Franklin once said “Out of adversity comes opportunity” and that is certainly true for the founding members of Making a Difference - Brisbane (MaD). MaD is a non funded, not for profit community group that was formed after the 2011 Brisbane floods.

Many of the MaD team met during the flood crisis when the need to help families who lost everything was paramount.

Members adopted families and took care of all their needs including helping them set up their new homes.

When the need for urgent help was essentially finished, some of those who were helping decided to continue assisting others in the community such as victims of domestic violence, disadvantaged and the homeless.

“Our journey so far has been amazing,” said founder and manager Denise. “We have seen the best and the very worst of people, however, we have never been discouraged. Our support from the huge numbers of ‘likers’ on our page is nothing less than incredible, and without them we could not achieve what we do.

“Our mission is to support and provide help for anyone in need. Our passion is the homeless and we provide a backpack full of toiletries, snacks, blankets, scarves etc. We literally have provided thousands of backpacks since we began in 2012 as well as assisting survivors of domestic violence with household goods and pamper baskets for a special treat for in need families.

“We also assist other community groups who are also not for profit or have no funding. We never judge a persons circumstances as we know being homeless is only two pay packets away if something goes haywire for any one of us.”

The MaD team also regularly participate in homeless street feeds by handing out toiletries, towels, snacks, scarves, clothing and other essentials as well as contributing to more well known charities that are hands on with helping the homeless.

“We post up on our facebook page what our needs are. For example, if we have a client who needs household items, we post up what is required and usually have a huge response. We pick up the donations, sort them and deliver to the client. We also hold continual toiletry appeals throughout the year and we have a core list of items that go into our backpacks.

“Our motto is a hand up not a hand out. The homeless prefer to stay out of the limelight. They are rarely greedy and are so very grateful. To participate in a street feed and see their faces when you hand them a backpack, words cannot describe. The generosity of our supporters who time after time keep giving allow us to follow our dream.”

RICHLANDS SCOUT GROUP UPDATE

July school holidays saw over 100 patrols of Scouts headed to Baden Powell Park at Samford for a four day, three night Scout camp known as SSS (Scout Section Skills). Our Scouts had the opportunity to take part in a variety of activities including camp cooking, geocaching, archery, rock climbing and many more. The highlight of their weekend was an afternoon spent on the Mudlark base, run by our local Benarrawa District Leaders, including those from Richlands - Forest Lake, West Centenary, Pamphlett and Salisbury. Mudlark is a trail base including a ropes course, water balloon volleyball, vertical bungee and, of course, lots and lots of mud! SSS is a great opportunity to learn new skills, make new friends and have loads of fun.

Our Group finished off the holidays with a trip to Schonnel Theatre for the Saturday matinee of the Brisbane Gang Show.

This is another opportunity for our youth members to showcase their talents, this time under the direction of Scouts Queensland Performing Arts Team. Over 125 scout youth members aged between nine and 25 sang, danced and acted their hearts out after months of rehearsals. This year’s production ‘Shipwrecked’ was a fun and adventurous story about the occupants of a cruise ship which ran into some foul weather.

They ran into jungle animals and haunted mansions among other things, with a fantastic twist at the end. Scouting is so diverse it encompasses everything from pioneering to performing, with something for everybody.

On a local level, we are happy to announce that we are now officially named Richlands - Forest Lake Scout Group.

We are also happy to welcome our new Group Patron, Cr Charles Strunk and wish our previous patron, Mr Milton Dick MP Member for Oxley, every success in his new role.

Park renamed in remembrance of local couple lost on flight HM370 Rod and Mary Burrows, one of the first families to move into Camelot Crescent, Middle Park were remembered on Saturday 25 June at an official park naming ceremony.

The couple were among the 237 passengers aboard missing flight HM370 in September last year. Their daughter Karla started an online petition to rename Camelot Park as ‘Rod and Mary Burrows Park’.

“The petition included 822 signatures and it was great to see it receive bipartisan support when presented to Council earlier this year,” Cr Bourke said.

“Rod and Mary had a strong connection to this park and naming it in their memory will be a fitting tribute as they were one of the first families to move into Camelot Crescent and also helped to maintain the park after it was first established.”

About one hundred family and friends joined the Burrows family at the ceremony to take part in the unveiling of the ‘Rod and Mary Burrows Park’ sign by Jordan Burrows, his sister Karla McMaster and Cr Matthew Bourke.

The Kiwanis Club of Brisbane were pleased to provide a sausage sizzle for those who attended the ceremony.

As I travel around our region, people are raising concerns about the unacceptably high levels of youth unemployment and the menace of ICE besetting our community.

Many residents have been asking me “What will the LNP Opposition do if you are elected to government?” It’s a good question. I have outlined the two policies below so you can get a better understanding of our plan.

A plan to get Mount Ommaney working Recently the LNP Opposition announced Our Plan to Get Queensland Working. Our plan will create up to 20,000 jobs for young Queenslanders, reduce the cost of working for young apprentices and provide incentives for businesses to train and retain young Queenslanders.

Our Plan to Get Queensland Working includes: Queensland Apprenticeship Boost – a $5,000 incentive for Queensland businesses who take on a new apprentice from beginning to end, providing up to 10,000 new apprentices over four years; Tools for Tradies – $500 voucher for tradies who complete their apprenticeship to get the tools they need to get working, providing tools to 20,000 tradies over four years; Job Start Incentive – $4,000 grants over 12 months to assist small businesses with recruitment and start-up costs for eligible young Queenslanders (15-24) who are unemployed and not enrolled in full-time education or training. This will employ up to 10,000 young Queenslanders over four years; and Employment Bonus – a bonus to encourage businesses who employ participants under the Apprenticeship Boost or Job Start Incentive where after 12 months continuous employment, businesses will have that workers’ wages excluded as part of next year’s premium calculation for workers compensation, saving small businesses hundreds in workers compensation fees.

Five point plan to take ice off our streets The LNP Opposition is committed to tackling drug use in communities, particularly increased ice use, to help make Queensland the safest place to live, work and raise a family The LNP’s five-point plan to take ice off our streets includes: dob in a dealer - $1 million to encourage the community to report any information to Crime Stoppers Queensland; keeping bikie clubhouses closed; drug addiction services - working with the federal government to deliver more treatment services, particularly in rural and regional Queensland, and targeted support through Queensland Health; law enforcement co-operation - ensuring our state and commonwealth law enforcement agencies share intelligence and resources to tackle ICE supply and distribution across Queensland; increased prevention - through community awareness programs targeting specific high-risk demographics.

Mount Ommaney seniors’ morning tea Finally, a reminder of my annual senior’s week morning tea. This is the fourth year I have hosted it and I always enjoy the company of local seniors, especially for seniors week.

This year we will be hosting the morning tea at the Jindalee Hotel on Friday 19 August from 9.15am till noon, with renowned business owner and current chair of the Metro South Health and Hospital board, Terry White as the guest speaker with special performances from local schools. Community Bulletin Board Jindalee Probus Club The Probus Club of Jindalee meets on the second Tuesday of the month at the Jindalee Golf Club at 10.00am. The next meeting date is August 9th. Rotary Club of Brisbane Centenary The Rotary Club of Brisbane Centenary meets every Wednesday morning at Solitude Solutions, 5 Wills Court Mt Ommaney. The meeting commences at 6.45am and finishes at 7.45am with a continental breakfast on offer. Prospective members and guests are invited to arrive at 6.30am for fellowship and introductions. Probus Club of Centenary Suburbs The club meets at the Jindalee Bowls Club on the fourth Tuesday of each month with morning tea at 10 am. A guest speaker delivers a presentation on an interesting topic and a light lunch is then served. Members also enjoy a monthly outing and special interest group activities. Chapel Hill VIEW Club The ‘Christmas in July’ meeting was most memorable, complete with table decorations and crackers, a delicious meal, wonderful Christmas items for purchase from the trading table and a special guest playing the harp! On August 2nd members will celebrate the club’s 26th birthday with their choir performing. The September meeting will include a fashion parade with Portofino garments for sale. The major fund raising event will be on 19th October; a morning tea with millinery, jewellery and hand dyed silk clothing created by well known Brisbane artists for sale. More details next month. The Chapel Hill VIEW Club is enjoying many activities that develop friendships as well as raise funds for The Smith Family Learning for Life programs which are designed to support the education of disadvantaged students. VIEW stands for Voice, Interests and Education of Women; the numerous clubs Australia-wide are a valued part of The Smith Family. We meet at Mt Ommaney Hotel Apartments, 10.45am for 11.30am on the first Tuesday of the month. The two course meal costs $32. In addition to the trading table, there is a DVD and books table, lucky door prize and raffles. Interest groups include the choir, bridge, chit chat crafters and a beginners Mah-jong group. Centenary Evening VIEW Club The next monthly dinner meeting of the Centenary Evening VIEW Club will be Monday 8 August. Meetings are held at the McLeod Country Golf Club, 61 Gertrude McLeod Crs, Middle Park, 6:30 pm for 7 pm, cost is $35 and bookings are essential.The guest speaker will be Dr. Danielle Harris who has just returned to Australia and joined the faculty of Criminology and Criminal Justice at Griffith University after 15 year in USA. Dr. Harris currently serves as the Chair of Research on the Executive Board of Directors for the Association for the Treatment of Sexual Abusers and is authoring two books. This will be Danielle’s second visit to the club as a guest speaker and members know her talk will be most interesting and educational. As well as dinner meetings members enjoy many other social events each month and ladies of all ages are most welcome. Calling all book lovers - Good News Lutheran Book Fair Good News Lutheran School will be holding its annual Book Fair again on Friday 9th (6-9pm) and Saturday 10th (7am-3pm) September 2016 at Horizon Drive, Middle Park. This year organisers have introduced an exclusive Book Zone Preview Night session which will be open to the public on Friday 9th from 6-9pm for those who cannot make it on the Saturday. With over 20,000 new and used books for sale across all genres, children’s puzzles, board games, educational toys, gifts and box sets, there is something for everyone. Book donations are still needed and can be dropped off to the school on August 19 and 20 or contact the school on 3373 4400 if you’d like to arrange an earlier drop off date.
