Great Strides for Cystic Fibrosis For the eighth year running, LJ Hooker will host the Great Strides charity event to raise funds for families living with cystic fibrosis.

Organisers of the walkathon are hoping to raise $10 000 this year and make 2016 the biggest and best Great Strides event to date.

LJ Hooker are national sponsors and have a partnership in caring for those living with cystic fibrosis. Millions of dollars have been raised nationally over the past decade with LJ Hooker Forest Lake instrumental in organising the local ‘Great Strides’ event with thousands of dollars going towards the national total.

Residents are encouraged to participate and join with LJ Hooker Forest Lake, LJ Hooker Browns Plains and Cystic Fibrosis on 28 August for the 4.4km route from the corner of Forest Lake Boulevard and The Esplanade at LJ Hooker Forest Lake.

Whilst registration is available on the day, early bird registrations are open now with prices of $15 for an individual or the family cost of $35 for two adults and three children, with children under five years of age free. Prices increase by $5 for on the day registration. ICHLANDS SCOUT GROUP UPDAT

July school holidays saw over 100 patrols of Scouts headed to Baden Powell Park at Samford for a four day, three night Scout camp known as SSS (Scout Section Skills). Our Scouts had the opportunity to take part in a variety of activities including camp cooking, geocaching, archery, rock climbing and many more. The highlight of their weekend was an afternoon spent on the Mudlark base, run by our local Benarrawa District Leaders, including those from Richlands - Forest Lake, West Centenary, Pamphlett and Salisbury. Mudlark is a trail base including a ropes course, water balloon volleyball, vertical bungee and, of course, lots and lots of mud! SSS is a great opportunity to learn new skills, make new friends and have loads of fun.

Our Group finished off the holidays with a trip to Schonnel Theatre for the Saturday matinee of the Brisbane Gang Show.

This is another opportunity for our youth members to showcase their talents, this time under the direction of Scouts Queensland Performing Arts Team. Over 125 scout youth members aged between nine and 25 sang, danced and acted their hearts out after months of rehearsals. This year’s production ‘Shipwrecked’ was a fun and adventurous story about the occupants of a cruise ship which ran into some foul weather.

They ran into jungle animals and haunted mansions among other things, with a fantastic twist at the end. Scouting is so diverse it encompasses everything from pioneering to performing, with something for everybody.

On a local level, we are happy to announce that we are now officially named Richlands - Forest Lake Scout Group.

We are also happy to welcome our new Group Patron, Cr Charles Strunk and wish our previous patron, Mr Milton Dick MP Member for Oxley, every success in his new role.

Everyone has their own natural tooth colour. Some people are blessed with great genes and have nice white teeth.

Natural, healthy teeth have extremely subtle yellow, brown or grey tones. Unfortunately as teeth age they tend to change colour to be more yellow or brown. However, light tooth shades are extremely attractive. Tooth shade varies between people and even between teeth from the same person.

Baby teeth tend to be whiter than permanent teeth.

Tooth colour depends upon the natural shade of the outer layer of tooth structure (enamel) and the tooth layer under the enamel (dentin). It also depends upon the thickness and translucency of the enamel.

Dentin can be very yellow. If the enamel layer is thin and/or very translucent, the yellow dentin will show through the enamel. These factors help explain why some teeth respond better to whitening treatments than others. If you are concerned about the colour of your teeth you should talk to your dentist to see if whitening can make a difference.

There are some factors that cause the whitening to be less effective. Whitening should not be done if there are holes and decay is present.

Local pianist hopeful of scholarship win Forest Lake resident and pianist, Aaron Liu, will soon be vying for a coveted scholarship at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music after being announced as one of only four finalists in the annual Allison/Henderson Sydney Eisteddfod for pianists aged 16-25.

Sydney Eisteddfod is a not-for-profit organisation that runs one of the most successful competitive performing arts festivals of its type in the world, with an average of 350 events each year.

Aaron completed his Bachelor of Music in Advanced Performance (Honours) at the Queensland Conservatorium of Music in 2013 with Oleg Stepanov. During his undergraduate degree, he was awarded prizes each year for achieving the highest mark in performance.

Winner of the 2015 Melbourne Recital Centre Great Romantics Competition, Aaron was also the first prize recipient in the 2015 Australian Society of Keyboard Music National Open Piano Competition. Additionally, he was a finalist in the 2015 ABC Young Performers Awards.

Other prizes have included winning the 2014 Australian Youth Classical Music Competition, Yamaha Australian Youth Piano Competition, Queensland Piano Competition, Yamaha Recitals Scholarship, and many other awards.

Aaron is currently completing a Masterâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s of Music in Performance degree. â&#x20AC;&#x153;It is hoped that I will be able to undertake and further my studies as a pianist overseas,â&#x20AC;? said Aaron. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I have successfully auditioned at Colleges in the UK and have accepted the Royal College of Music. Although, due to financial reasons, I will be hopefully postponing this until next year so that I can acquire more funds for the fees necessary to study overseas.â&#x20AC;?

Aaron will present a major work of up to 35 minutes in length at the final on August 26 at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music and the winner of the Allison/ Henderson Sydney Eisteddfod Piano Scholarship will receive $13,500 in prizes.

It seems that a sense of adventure and desire to know more about what our diggers went through runs in the family, with Krista’s sister, Isabella, set to embark on the same journey.

Isabella, at 16 years old, completed the 96km Gold Coast Kokoda Challenge in July and has now set her sights on heading to PNG in September to trek the Kokoda Track.

One of only six from the 13 in the Brisbane Kokoda Kid team to make it over the finish line in the designated time frame, Isabella said that while extremely difficult, it was an experience she won’t forget.

“It was a tough slog and at times it looked like we weren’t going to make it,” she said. “We were plagued with injuries and it was a struggle emotionally, mentally and physically... but somehow we pulled through and made it to the end.”

Proud mum, Anneke, said, “At the support crew checkpoints, Isabella was quite positive that she was going to make the entire distance and was not deterred by the pain.

“She was very supportive of all her team mates and her leaders have had nothing but positive things to say about her attitude and mateship.”

Furkids Animal Rescue is a recently incorporated charity that rescues animals in need and places them into foster care before seeing them settled into their forever homes.

Run solely by volunteers and relying on donations, Furkids has rescued close to 900 animals in the three years it has been in operation.

The charity is always looking for suitable foster homes, short or long term, as well as forever homes for the, predominately, dogs that they rescue.

Foster carer and Forest Lake resident, Josie said, “Last year when our older dog died, we went looking for a puppy, and we ended up adopting one through furkids.

“When our other elderly dog died, we decided that instead of getting a second dog again, we would foster. We fostered Zara first, and when she found her forever family, we took in Stan.”

Free anti-bullying and self-defence workshop It is an unfortunate fact that in today’s world, personal safety and security is more a necessity than a choice.

To that end, local Forest Lake Rhee TaeKwon-do group are offering a free anti-bullying and self-defence workshop on Monday 29 August at the new Community Hall on College Avenue from 5-6pm.

Rhee TaeKwon-do is a controlled contact, non-competition martial art that focuses on effective selfdefence techniques and personalised training to help students develop self-confidence, self-discipline, fitness and respect. It is Australia’s first and biggest TaeKwon-Do school, founded in 1965 by World Master Chong Chul Rhee. Rhee TaeKwon-Do Forest Lake is a proud supporter of the Australian Federal Police’s Street Smart program that is implemented in all high schools in Queensland.

“Anyone can learn and enjoy Rhee TaeKwon-Do,” said Instructor Eva. “Male or female, large or small, strong or weak, child, teenager or adult.

“This free event will primarily focus on safety and awareness for schoolchildren aged five to 17. Parents are welcome to watch or join in as we know and understand that some children are nervous without accompaniment. The Forest Lake Junior Rugby Union Club has come back from holidays sharper than ever! We have welcomed a new participant in our facilities, Brett R from Positive Experience Personal UGBY Training (PEPT) who joins Alex from Step Into Life as family fitness providers.

Our multi-sport plans continue with cricket and in Term 4 our club will begin with the Milo In2 Cricket entry program for ages 5-8. In Term 1 7-8 year olds can then progress into ‘Super 8s’ and the Milo In2 Cricket will run again. We will be having a sausage sizzle by the lake to get signatures and tables in the shopping centre and at the Grand Ave Markets in August. All in all, we want around 2000 signatures which we will then present to the Member for Algester Leeanne Enoch at the end of August.

The last month of winter is here and the lengthening days bring us promise that spring is just around the corner as the garden sees the first stirring of the new season. Maybe some of our natives are trying to outdo the spring flowers with many in bloom now. It’s great driving around the suburbs seeing the Acacias (wattles) revealing their many shades of yellow. How can I not mention the Camellias? So many different colours are on show high-lightening many gardens.

The Royal National Show is on this month giving everyone the opportunity to see what the country and city can produce with stock, agriculture and many arts and crafts displays. The RNA also has the habit of bringing the cool westerly winds so we still have to ‘rug-up’ before spring arrives. The horticultural displays will be in the old Museum building this year. Make sure you check it out when visiting the show.

Our next bus trip will be on Tuesday 13 September when we will visit the six acre Bominda Garden at Rosevale, lunch at the Marburg Hotel and spend the afternoon at Larsen’s Bulbs. Another fun-filled day and all entry fees, lunch and morning and afternoon teas are included in the price of $50 for members and $60 for visitors. If space is a problem or you want to fill a couple of spaces on a patio, hanging baskets look delightful but need very special care. Those in the shade are relatively easy to look after but, if hanging in the sun, baskets dry out very quickly.

Wire baskets with fibre or bark linings are attractive but it’s wise to put a sheet of plastic inside the liner. Poke a few holes in the plastic sheet to allow drainage before filling the hanging basket with potting mix. After planting and watering, any plastic sheet that is visible can be trimmed away. The plastic sheet won’t be seen but will make a huge difference to the water-holding ability of the basket.

As the Local Member for Algester and Innovation Minister, Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m constantly reminded that the world is changing at an ever increasing pace.

Many of the jobs we know today will be very different in 10 years and digital literacy is a vital part of ensuring that students are prepared for the jobs of the future.

Thatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s why the Palaszczuk Government invested $1.7 million in the Entrepreneurs of Tomorrow program to help our schools to create innovative educational programs in coding and robotics and to develop important entrepreneurial skills.

Earlier this month Forest Lake State High School was awarded $16,600 under this grant program. The school will use the money to offer a new innovative curriculum to Year 7 students next year.

I am delighted to see Forest Lake State High School be part of this exciting initiative and I look forward to seeing the results of the new program.

On this month, is the annual Grand Avenue State School Ekka Fun Day is scheduled for Wednesday 10th August 10am-3pm. This great local event falls on the Ekka Show day public holiday for Brisbane, and is going to be bigger and better than ever with fun for the whole family.

There will be up to 50 markets stalls, show bags, rides and even a reptile show.

So be sure to come along and support our local school.

There is less than a month left to participate in the Premierâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Reading Challenge.

Keratoconjunctivitis sicca, usually abbreviated to KCS, is a condition of the eye where insufficient tears are produced resulting in a dry eye surface. Although it can affect many domestic species, including cats and horses, KCS is most commonly seen in dogs. In a recent study of dogs with eye problems, an amazing 40% were diagnosed with KCS making it a common condition you may not know is there. So how can you tell if your pet is affected?

Any dog can be affected by KCS, but some breeds like spaniels and flat faced breeds are more predisposed. The condition can occur at any age, but is most commonly seen in dogs from six to 10 years of age. The earliest symptom of Dry Eye is conjunctivitis, or inflammation of the inner eyelids. Frequently, this conjunctivitis seems to respond to antibiotic drops, but quickly returns when the course is finished. As the condition develops, mucous threads may be noticed on the surface of the eye, which move as the dog blinks, or build up at the bottom of the eye, near the lower lid. With time, some of the mucus can build up around the eye, becoming dry and crusty. Owners of affected animals often report how frequently they need to clean their pet’s eyes. Dogs with hair rubbing directly on the cornea will also show more severe symptoms.

Without proper diagnosis and treatment, the condition progresses to keratitis (inflammation of the cornea at the front surface of the eye). At this stage, the cornea starts changing colour, vision deteriorates and discomfort occurs.

Dogs will often show signs of discomfort by squinting and rubbing their eyes, and corneal ulcers are frequently present at this stage. As the condition progresses, the cornea becomes invaded with blood vessels, scarred and pigmented, leading to reduced vision and eventually blindness. Sadly, these changes are irreversible.

Unfortunately, there is no cure for KCS, but once a diagnosis is made and the specific cause determined, there are a number of treatments that can maintain the long term health of the eyes so progressive deterioration can be prevented.

Monthly Update

This month the Club celebrated it’s very popular Christmas in July with 101 members enjoying a fabulous day out and the weather didn’t let us down – it was perfect!

This year’s venue was Harrigan’s Drift Inn at Calypso Bay. On the way to Harrigan’s, there was a stop at Cabbage Tree Point where our committee provided a delicious morning tea. As the morning was a little chilly on the bay, hot tea, coffee and nibbles were consumed with great enthusiasm.

Next stop was at Harrigan’s Drift Inn for our Christmas in July function with everyone dressed up in their Christmas attire for the occasion. A lovely three-course meal was enjoyed by all in a wonderful room setting with great music and good company making it the perfect way for our members to celebrate Christmas in July.

This month, the Club’s ‘Extra Activity‘ was held at Hello Harry on July 13 for lunch and members get together. There were over 30 members in attendance and, as usual, there was lots of good humour and in particular, talk about our recent Christmas in July function.

News from the 19th Hole Forest Lake Social Golf Club update by Patrick Ayling The Forest Lake Social Golf Club had another good turnout with 30 players attending the River Lakes game on 3 July.

The weather on the day was perfect although a little chilly at tee off. As usual, the course proved to be quite difficult with the water fairies claiming their usual fair share of golf balls! The fairways and greens were in good condition, with pin placements making putting a challenge. Several members did however manage to meet the challenge of the course returning sub-par rounds on the day.

This year’s budget has many Forest Lake residents concerned about the rate increase across the Forest Lake Ward. The water remissions for pensioners has also changed with a lowering of the cap by $176 for full pensioners and $150 for part pensioners and ceased the scheme for any new pensioners or existing eligible pensioners who move address.

I have had a number of Seniors Groups contacting me about their concerns with the rate increases and Water Remission changes which will see many significantly worse off by increasing their cost of living.

As a result of numerous phone calls, meetings and face-to-face conversations about the rates increase, I have initiated a petition to give residents a voice opposing the rate increase. The local National Seniors are also running a petition to address the Water Remission cuts.

Please find a copy of both petitions on page 23 of this edition and if you need extra copies please contact my office.

As your local Councillor, I will do all I can to ensure Council is cleaning up the litter in our streets, public spaces and waterways. The Brisbane City Council Litter Prevention team will be out and about in the Forest Lake Ward in the coming months spreading the message of how easy it is to keep our suburb free from litter.

We have seen an increase in rubbish at our local parks due to the introduction of ‘Pokemon Go’. While you are out and about enjoying this activity, please be mindful of the rubbish that you create by either disposing of it in a Council bin or take it home. Don’t forget littering does attract a fine.

I want to conclude by congratulating Milton Dick MP who was elected as the new Federal Member for Oxley. I look forward to working with him to continue the fight in supporting our community.

Unless there are significant changes in one’s financial circumstances, one might generally expect that a reasonable tax refund last year will be replicated this year. More often than not this is the case, particularly if one’s affairs are quite simple, but one must be mindful of instances where this may not necessarily hold true.

Take the case of Linda who returned to work in 2014-15 in an administrative role and who earns $60,000 per year. During 2014-15 she earned $30,000 as she only worked for six months. The tax taken out last year was $472 per fortnight, to give an annual amount of tax withheld of $6,136. Linda did not have any deductions but still received a healthy refund of $3,739. “Nice one”, she thought, “Looking forward to the same in 2015-16.”

During 2015-16 Linda worked for the full year and earned $60,000 gross with a total of $12,272 taken out in tax. She decides to submit her return early as she has plans for that refund of over $3,500.

The tax on the $60,000 for 2015-16, including Medicare levy, is $12,147 meaning that Linda’s refund is a very disappointing (as compared with last year) $125. She had just booked a great holiday for herself on the assumption that it would essentially be covered by her 2015-16 refund.

So what has happened? Employers are obliged to withhold income tax according to published PAYG tables. The tax to be withheld per fortnight is based on your earnings for that fortnight, but it is essentially based on the assumption that such income will be earned over a period of 26 fortnights. In other words, the tax withheld is based on an annualised income.

In 2014-15 the annualised income was $60,000, the same as the actual annual income for 2015-16. The tax was taken out in 2014-15 on the assumption that such income would prevail over a full year; however, as she only worked six months and had to pay tax on an annual income of only $30,000 there is a significant adjustment at the end of the year. Such is not the case in 2015-16 when her entitlement to the low income tax offset is also considerably reduced.

The message? Be cautious with your assumptions. History often does repeat itself but not necessarily all the time when it comes to tax!

“I know it’s important but I just don’t have time.”

That’s the most common response I hear to the imperative to spend quality time with our families. The hustle and bustle of work, managing family members’ timetables, balancing the household budget and other commitments mean the important things get crowded out by the urgent.

As we drive between sports practice, music lessons, P&C meetings, we can find our lives drifting into a cycle of chicken nuggets being passed into the back of the car as we simply try to stay on schedule. And, so, the push to fit more things in – even important things – can seem impossible. We simply can’t add anything else in!

However, I recently heard some advice given by Matt Chandler, a pastor in the United States: rather than adding more things in, can we change the way we do things we’re already doing?

For example, instead of getting onto our devices when we’re driving along, perhaps we can spend that time actually talking. Another example might be those nights when we sit down together for a meal. We can easily just flop in front of the TV. How about eating at the table together?

Ah, I hear you ask, it’s been so long since we’ve talked like that, I wouldn’t know how to start. Try the game our family learned from the movie The Sum of Us. (Yes, family advice from a Bruce Willis movie!) It’s the ‘high & low’ game. Each member of the family has to say what their low point of the day was and what their high point was. It’s a simple game and a quick one. However, it gives you insight into how your family is going and what’s important to them.

One day, we had a particularly difficult time pushing our kids to get ready and get off to school. It was frustrating and I didn’t do well at hiding my frustration. However, I was surprised at dinner that one of my daughters said that her low point that day had been seeing how frustrated I’d been. She had apparently been doing her best to get ready but felt sick. By doing the ‘high & low’ game, I found out that I’d been too harsh on her and was able to apologise. The whole thing only took about three minutes but we were reconciled.

It’s interesting that when God tells His people to teach their kids about Him, He doesn’t say that parents must always do it by sitting the kids down at the table and lecturing them. He says, “Talk about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up.” (Deuteronomy 6:7) In other words, just make it part of everyday life – redeem the little moments (walking, sitting, lying down) and take the opportunity that is there.

To be sure, there are times when we just get so busy that we need to drop things out of our life where possible. But, sometimes the solution is not in adding new things but just redeeming what is already there.

Forest Lake Probus Club Update

The Probus Club had two visiting speakers for July. A special visitor was the newly elected Councillor Charles Strunk for the new Ward of Forest Lake. As time was limited, Charles gave a brief overview of the plans in the pipeline and what has been achieved so far. The re-opening of the Dog Park in College Avenue was a popular move. New shade sails are being erected in the playground in Pine Village Park. The popular Dragon Fountain in the Lake will soon be in operation. Water rejuvenation, vegetation maintenance, improving traffic safety and installation of traffic lights at the black spot intersections of Archerfield Road, Azalea Street and Pine are all important works to be completed.

Unfortunately, due to time only one question was allowed where concern was expressed about the construction of townhouses near Woogaroo Street.

The dedicated monthly speaker was David Webber, Education Officer from the RACQ. He commenced his talk informing Probians about what programs are offered and available from the RACQ. With his lively presentation and sense of humour, David kept seniors on their toes. Although necessary statistics were given, the audience was far more interested in participating and answering the questions directed at them. Emerging traffic, keeping spaces between vehicles, tailgating and the role of cyclists and bikies, all generated lots of discussion. Of course, living in Forest Lake, Probians are very au fait with using roundabouts. David reminded those over 75 years of age of the necessity of an annual medical check. A John Cleese video was thoroughly enjoyed. In the final analysis, David emphasised the need for courtesy on the road and common sense. Barry passed the Vote of Thanks.

Probians were then off to celebrate Christmas in July at Mt Tambourine and various activities have been planned

by David G, Activities Officer for the balance of the year.

Preparations are underway for our annual Welcome the Babies community celebration on September 3, and I would love any new Forest Lake parents with a baby less than 18 months old to take part in the annual celebrations.

Held in conjunction with the fantastic South West Progress Association at Durack State School, the event will feature fun, food and face painting.

Every baby will receive a special welcoming gift bag and will be presented with a commemorative certificate. It is also a great chance for getting parental tips and information from a wide range of local community organisations and relevant small businesses. Feedback in previous years has shown it is particularly helpful for first-time mums and dads.

It is always a pleasure to meet the newest additions to our Forest Lake families, so I urge you to get in contact with my office at 3737 2100, or email inala@parliament.qld.gov.au as soon as possible if you wish to be involved.

Looking back over the previous month, many within the Forest Lake Community helped celebrate NAIDOC Week 2016, one of the most important events in the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultural calendar. It was a fantastic opportunity for Forest Lake to come together to celebrate the rich diversity of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures, and acknowledge their connection to both Forest Lake and the rest of Queensland.

The Vietnam War Commemoration Concert This one off concert is open to all. Come and witness iconic songs and stories of the 1960-70s reflecting those heady times of political and social change. The concert honours all who served in Vietnam in the Australian Defence Forces and to remember those who gave their lives for the cause.

Contemporary artists include the multi-talented WicketyWak, stand up comic Denise Drysdale plus the Band of the 1st Regiment Royal Australian Artillery. The host is popular comic TV and radio presenter Terry Hansen. The concert is supported by Dept. of Veterans Affairs, RSL Queensland and the Australian War Memorial.

A reminder I recently came across a letter from Vietnam to the parents of a Digger wherein he describes his personal battle, and I might add, his heroism, in fighting in the epic Battle of Long Tan in August 1966.

The French Theme of our July meeting was lots of fun with so many people dressing up in costume and the colours of France. Our invited speaker Jean-Michel Ruinard, who teaches French at USQ and Alliance Francaise De Brisbane, spoke about Bastille Day history and French modern day celebrations. Jean-Michel was very entertaining and everyone enjoyed his presentation.

Saturday night 25 June a huge crowd descended on the Comerford Residence in Pallara for a Hoedown, a charity fundraising event. What a terrific night of fun. Bit chilly true, but good food, great entertainment, really great dancing from some of our members and everyone got right into the spirit of it all. Thank you to Lyn Martin and her family for organising this fantastic event and welcoming everyone to their home.

In August we are travelling to Longreach via the Spirit of the Outback. Such excitement in the group. What a great way to celebrate Seniorâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Week. Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s one of those bucket list items, a must do. We have organised our trip through National Seniors Travel with a fantastic itinerary.

Also in August we head to the Wynnum foreshore for a picnic. We are carpooling for this outing and some people are planning to buy their fish and chips at one of the shops on the foreshore.
