ALMA FLOR ADA CARES ABOUT WOODBURY

“Tu familia es nuestra familia.” Your family is our family!

That is the slogan of Alma Flor Ada, a yearround Spanish Immersion program that offers a hybrid of daycare and preschool services. Owner and operator Lucilla Dávila is a Woodbury resident for over 20 years. She shares her passion for using multi-lingual learning methods to empower children to explore, discover and advance.

“I have been in the field of education for almost 30 years. My career in education started as an ESL and Spanish Teacher for 8 years. I then moved into administration as an Assistant Principal, then Principal of a Spanish Immersion program in the public sector, Associate Superintendent and now, Chief of Schools, creating innovative programming for families in Spanish Immersion education,” says Dávila. “I have lived in the Woodbury community for more than 20 years where my daughter Sophia and son Johnny are graduates of Woodbury High School. I have seen how much Woodbury has grown and diversified over the years as a community and the diverse businesses that are

flourishing as well.”

Alma Flor Ada, is named after Doctor of Bilingual Education, Dr. Alma Flor Ada, who is originally from Cuba and has written more than two hundred children’s books. In addition to language immersion, Dávila says that the school also focuses on culture, school readiness, social emotional learning, and STEM programming for children ages 2 years old to 6 years old.

Dávila joined the Board of Directors at Woodbury Community Foundation. last year.

“I love what the Woodbury Community Foundation is all about, they provide a thriving community where we all can lean on each other and support each other as a growing community, no matter what the needs are,” she adds. “Communities become stronger when we all care for each other and have the same levels of urgency in making Woodbury a better place to live, work and create amazing memories with friends and family! The Foundation embraces this purpose to the core!”

BEST OF FAQS

Each year, our Best of Woodbury poll brings together our readers and social media followers, who look forward to supporting local businesses and service providers with their votes.

If you’re new to the Best of Woodbury readers’ poll or just curious about the process, read along to discover the ins and outs, so you’re ready to vote next year!

VOTING RAN ONLINE DURING JANUARY WITH THREE SIMPLE RULES*:

1. One entry was allowed per person; each ballot needed to include an email address.

2. Ballots must have been completed by 5 p.m. January 31, 2023.

How does voting work?

We feature an all write-in ballot, so our voters can easily make their top choices. Once voting closed, tabulators determined which businesses were the top vote-getters.

What’s a finalist vs. a winner?

3. Voters needed to vote in at least five categories to ensure their ballots were counted.

*Any rule not adhered to may have resulted in entire surveys being discarded, and all results were subject to editorial discretion.

FAQS:

How do you choose the categories?

Each year, our editorial and management teams evaluate survey categories to include topics our readers find most relevant. Readers provide feedback, which we appreciate receiving, about categories they’d like to see added or eliminated. You’ll notice several new categories this year!

The top vote-getters in each category become finalists and were announced in the spring on our website. (Once votes are tabulated, our editorial team fact-checks the address and contact information for each finalist. If a finalist is no longer a valid selection due to a closed business, etc., the next highest vote-getter(s) moves up to become a finalist.) The top vote-getter is the winner and is announced in July on our website and in our magazine.

Can a business or organization be a finalist if it’s located outside of the magazine’s coverage area?

In order to qualify as a finalist in the survey, each business or organization must be located in the community and/or provide services to local residents.

How can business owners get on next year’s ballot?

We recommend encouraging clients or customers to vote for your business in our next readers’ poll, which goes live on our website in January 2024. (Remind them of the rules, so their ballots are valid.)

I’m a winner! How do I purchase a framed cover?

Winners can request a free digital copy of the Best of 2023 magazine cover design, which also indicates the winning category and the business’s or organization’s name. Winners can also purchase a framed award certificate, which is 14x17 inches and features a black, wood frame. The cost is $110 per item, including shipping and handling, and can be ordered at localmedia.co/awardcertificate. —Editorial Staff

What you should know about our annual readers’ poll.

CITIZENS OF WOODBURY Meet a Woodbury Champion

On August 12, Woodbury streets and trails will be filled with the sound of running shoes pounding the pavement. This is the annual Live Brave 5K and 1 Mile: a national-level event in support of youth eating disorder prevention and recovery. For Alice Halvorson, Woodbury resident and co-founder of Live Brave, the project is deeply personal. An eating disorder survivor, Halvorson has built a passiondriven career in amplifying health and wellness across our community. Her partnership with the City of Woodbury and the Woodbury Community Foundation has expanded access to adult fitness programs. But making a difference for kids comes first. She says, “Prevention is a very hard thing to do. We help parents, coaches, teachers [and] doctors to have the hard conversations, ditch diet culture and reach young minds.”

Four Ways to Elevate Your Home’s Exterior

The exterior of your home is a great way to showcase your personality and style. It also adds value. Here are some of our favorite suggestions to elevate the look of your home:

1. When choosing exterior paint colors, go for a subtle tone-on-tone look. Less is more here. Think earthy, natural and sophisticated. It’s a timeless look that won’t fail you!

2. Add wood elements. Everyone is loving the addition of warm woods into our interiors, and it’s also a fabulous idea for the exterior. Wood (or woodlook) garage doors, columns, pergolas, beams or flower boxes add interest without having to redo any siding material. If you are replacing siding, we love the look of adding vertical cedar siding or board and batten on sections of the house. Try to pair with colors that will make it stand out and

feel purposeful, like charcoal or white.

3. Level-up your lighting. Replace old light fixtures with something fresh and current. Lighting is like jewelry: It sets the vibe to complement your exterior style. Be sure to add some solar lights to highlight your landscaping or add to deck posts for evening ambiance.

4. Create inviting spaces. There’s something so welcoming about going to a home with a cozy sitting area on a front porch. Add seating for multiple people and conversation with friends. If you don’t have a front porch, you can create a patio space in the front yard. There’s no rule that says it has to be in the backyard. Add an outdoor beverage cart or firepit to encourage people to feel welcomed and stay a while!

Help Your Plants Thrive this Summer

Minnesotans make the most of summer, and there are many weekends that Minnesotans spend at the cabin and away from the garden. Follow these two tips to make sure your plants survive those weekends away.

Keep Your Plants Hydrated

While all plants need water, it is especially important for new plantings, as watering helps establish a good root system. Before heading out for the weekend, give your plants a good soak at the base. To make things extra simple, install a drip irrigation system. This will automatically water your plants and can be used even when you’re at home. A good soak should set your plants up for the weekend, but if you’re going to be away for longer than a few days, ask a friendly neighbor to water your plants.

Pick Plants That Will Survive the Heat

Certain plants thrive in hot summer conditions more than others. When planting new spaces, plant low maintenance varieties that thrive in the heat. Some of my favorites are Little Hottie® Panicle Hydrangea, Little Spark® Spirea and Fireside® Ninebark. Not only do these shrubs provide phenomenal multiseason interest, but they will be standing strong when you return from your weekend adventures.

Woodbury Community Foundation program invites students to flourish.

WOODBURY IS FILLED with talent and bright minds, but there’s one specific program catering to help those capabilities expand. The Youth Engagement Leadership Academy (YELA), sponsored by the Woodbury Community Foundation, is an initiative to help upcoming high school graduates succeed in their community.

“YELA is a five-week service learning, leadership development and entrepreneurial program. So its mission is to develop incoming seniors and help them become more service and community-minded. While also giving them some options to serve in the future,” says Matthew Johnson, YELA program coordinator.

The classes, some of which started

this month, are offered to all incoming graduates, who are residents of Woodbury. “We’ve had students from East Ridge [High School], Woodbury [High School], Cretin[-Derham Hall] and Stillwater [Area High School] participate last year, but they all lived in the city of Woodbury,” Johnson says.

The five-week program meets once per week, and each week is dedicated to a different topic for two hours, partnering with a wide range of organizations across Woodbury. “The first class is Woodbury of the past [and] in the future,” Johnson says.

“That’s in collaboration with the Woodbury Historical Society … Shelly Schafer [came] in to talk about our current demographics and future projections.”

Week two is dedicated to careers in the community. “We talk about the path to get to certain jobs in the community,” he says, noting that’s in partnership with the Woodbury Area Chamber of Commerce. “There are some different entrepreneurs and professionals that come in and talk about what they do and how they got into that role.”

Week three focuses on service and community engagement. YELA has speakers come in from the Woodbury Rotary Club, the Woodbury Lions Club and local food shelves.

Week four is a favorite for everyone, Johnson says. “This is the week we focus on public safety,” he says. “We meet at the Hero Center in conjunction with our

Woodbury public safety team, [and] there are representatives from the paramedics, police and fire departments.”

Finally, the last week is focused on the elected officials, which ties into graduation—from there the celebration is an open conversation on how YELA participants can stay engaged in their community while striving to achieve their professional and personal goals.

“We’re trying to broaden their horizons as to what service opportunities exist in our community and to help them see there’s a lot in the form of service,” Johnson says. “We hope that after YELA, wherever they should land in the future, you know, after college and in whatever they choose to do in their life, to be engaged citizens in the community.”

YELA program graduate Doug Ossanna says the mission of YELA is where his values are aligned. “I originally joined YELA after asking Matthew to come to speak at the real estate and investment club I was a president of,” Ossanna says. “After he introduced me to YELA, I knew it was the right fit for my future. I wanted to break into the real estate field, and I felt like YELA was a way for me to help develop my leadership skills and also learn about the community I live in.”

Ossanna says that YELA opened his eyes to what being a community leader means and how to incorporate that into a future position. “I think it helped push me to get my real estate licenses and be more involved. I am also planning to attend [University of St. Thomas] in the fall of 2023 to possibly pursue finance,” Ossanna says. “Overall, the program was really eyeopening to me, and I gained a new perspective of the work it takes to make the community of Woodbury great.”

Meet Trent Scheidecker

Catch up with one of the community’s busiest business owners.

WOODBURY AREA CHAMBER OF COMMERCE board chair Trent Scheidecker gets more done by 5 a.m. than most do by 5 p.m. And as one of Woodbury’s well-known proprietors, he doesn’t get too far without running into someone he’s worked with.

Scheidecker, a full-time chiropractor, created ChiroWay in 2010 to serve clients with chiropractic adjustments with a location in east Woodbury. Now, his business serves people needing adjustments in 15 locations. As its owner, Scheidecker says he looked to history and some helpful mentors to draft a “retro business model,” building on one service that focuses on convenience, affordability and relationships to succeed.

Scheidecker says one of his goals each day is to meet with at least three people who he can refer to other businesses in Woodbury. “If it means I have coffee three times in a day, I’ll do it,” he says. We sat down with Scheidecker to hear more about his passion for Woodbury.

How long have you called Woodbury home?

My wife and I have lived in Woodbury since 2005. We see lots of familiar faces around our town. My son always asks if I know people we pass by at the grocery store because of my work. It’s a common occurrence.

What do you love about Woodbury?

One of my favorite parts of Woodbury are the running trails. The City of Woodbury has gone above and beyond providing our community with an exceptional opportunity to experience miles of

trails throughout neighborhoods, lakes and parks. I am an avid runner and have used these trails to train for multiple marathons and can hop onto the trail system right from my front door in Dancing Waters!

How did you first get involved with the Woodbury Area Chamber of Commerce?

I’ve been supporting the chamber for 13 years. It’s really the community’s voice for small business and a no-brainer to start building relationships and start contributing to causes. I started working on Woodbury Days, and now I get a sneak peek into what’s going on behind the business community and the city’s long-term plans. It has taught me the art of networking.

What are you looking forward to in your new role as board chair?

This year, my duty as [board chair] is to continue to build on the momentum that has been built by a great board that came before us. We have a very strong membership in our chamber [and] great retention … which is going to be a tribute to this town for years to come.

I have weekly meetings with our chamber president and CEO Laurie Staiger, reviewing budgets and minutes, making sure committees are moving us toward our year end goals. I’m looking forward to the opportunity to share my ability to lead a group of individuals all with a shared mission and vision toward more growth for our community.

Outside of ChiroWay and the Woodbury Area Chamber of Commerce, how else do you spend your time?

I put family first. After a good, long day, I love coming home to the smiles. With a son and daughter, we make everyday things, like taco night, special. Fun times in Woodbury include keeping our kids busy and active throughout the city. We love all the different parks to explore, including Madison’s Place Playground, our Dancing Waters neighborhood pool and park or getting lost in Tamarack Nature Center! If I’m not at the parks or trails, you can catch me visiting our favorite coffee shop, [Dunn Brothers Coffee] at City Walk.

Movies and Memories

Starlight Cinema is back for an eighth season of neighborhood fun.

July 13: Tangled Entertainment 7 p.m.; Movie 9:20 p.m.

July 27: Lyle, Lyle, Crocodile Entertainment 7 p.m.; Movie 9 p.m.

August 10: Puss in Boots: The Last Wish Entertainment 7 p.m.; Movie 8:45 p.m.

THERE’S SOMETHING ABOUT a clear summer night, sitting in the grass beneath a blanket of stars. And on Thursday evenings at Ojibway Park, as the sun dips below the horizon and the sound of children’s laughter melts into a quiet joy, Starlight Cinema begins.

This summer will be the eighth season for Starlight Cinema—a biweekly summer event put on by Woodbury resident and event planner Amanda Roseth in partnership with the City of Woodbury. It began as a dream to connect her community. A mom of four, Roseth knew she wanted to use her passion to give back to her community. “I moved to Woodbury, and I had set a goal for myself to develop some type of event that the community

would embrace,” she says.

Roseth started in her backyard, inviting the neighborhood over for various events, including movie nights. “I had a movie screen that I hung from my deck, and I’d invite tons of neighbors over and all the kids would come. We’d have a bonfire, and they’d be running around doing night games and watching the movie. It just became a tradition,” Roseth says.

When Roseth decided to take the movie night up a notch in 2016, she wanted to bring that same sense of energy, excitement and connection to the broader community. “I didn’t just want a movie in the park, I wanted it to be really unique and interactive,” Roseth says.

The result is five summer evenings

of pure fun, complete with a familyfriendly movie on a 40-foot inflatable movie screen, various themed programs, activities and games, food vendors, special guests and more.

“Starlight Cinema creates a fun, safe and unique experience for our Woodbury community. Every event is slightly different with various entertainment and activities engaging to both kids and adults,” says Brandon Severson, branch manager at Spire Credit Union: Woodbury—the “Best Picture” sponsor this year. “Not only do I work in Woodbury, I also live in Woodbury—I can share first hand that our family is grateful for the opportunity this event provides, and we look forward to it every summer.”

Activities vary each event, but entertainment this season will include safe archery from Northern Star Council, free face painting, themed crafts from Kidcreate Studio, the SoWashCo Skoolie Bus, oversized chess and checkers, hula hoop contests, gaga ball, water relay races and trivia. Of the many beloved events, the water relay race—involving buckets, sponges and loads of fun—has become a fan-favorite. “The kids love relay races, especially the water relays,” Roseth says. “The kids know to run down to the event table to sign up.”

For Roseth, it’s the joy of sharing her passion that keeps her coming back each year. “Everyone has so much fun while they’re there, and seeing all the smiles and reactions as people walk out of the movie … The community has been very positive and excited about the event every year,” Roseth says.

As the event has grown in popularity, other communities have reached out to Roseth to bring something similar to them. But, for now, Starlight Cinema is just for Woodbury. “It’s something special to Woodbury because this is the community I live in, and I want to give back to the community that I live in,” Roseth says.

Specific movie nights will bring special visitors like the Tower Princess (for Tangled on July 13), a hula hoop performance, live animals from Carpenter Nature Center and dance instructors from Woodbury Dance Center—all made possible by the support of area sponsors.

“Woodbury is such a young and growing community, [the event] is perfect because it is geared toward families,” Roseth says.

The event is free to the public; school supplies and monetary donations for South Washington County Schools are encouraged. Other recommended items to bring include a folding lawn chair or blanket, umbrellas and rain gear for inclement weather, cash for concessions, warm clothing and mosquito repellent. Dogs are welcomed on leashes.

Lifetime Achievement

Lisa Weik receives multiple awards for the years she dedicated to Washington County.

AFTER HER LAST PUBLIC BOARD MEETING

in December 2022, Washington County Commissioner Lisa Weik waited at her Woodbury home for a package from Washington, D.C., that her staff member hand-delivered.

The parcel contained a three-point folded American flag and a letter certifying the accompanying flag flew over the United States Capitol at the request of Congresswoman Betty McCollum. The flag Weik held in her hands was flown in honor of her dedicated public service on the Washington County Board of Commissioners.

Weik and McCollum worked closely over the years. Still, the hand-delivered gift from a U.S. House Representative was “very unexpected, but incredibly meaningful and important to me,” says Weik. During her tenure, Weik made it a habit to see Washington County’s repre sentatives when she visited Washington, D.C., yearly as a committee member for the National Association of Counties.

A project she is proud of is her work on the Metro Transit’s Gold Line, which officially broke ground in October 2022 and is expected to be completed by 2025. “We would send groups of Gold Line officials, mayors and Ramsey County officials to Washington, D.C., just for Gold Line,” Weik says about laying the groundwork early and preparing for a formal submission to the Federal Transit Administration (FTA) asking for federal funds to pay for half of the capital cost of the $505 million project.

Only three weeks after the flag arrived, the Woodbury Chamber of Commerce recognized Weik’s achievements and contribution to the community by awarding her the coveted Lifetime Achievement Award.

As a chamber member and gracious award recipient, Weik compliments the

Woodbury business community. “My hat’s off to the leadership of the chamber,” says Weik of the opportunities small business owners have to get to know each other. During Good Morning Woodbury meetings, Weik listens to what other chamber members say.

When it’s her turn to introduce herself and announce her “one ask” during the early morning meetings, “I always ask for the same thing—for people to apply and serve on the different citizen advisory boards with the county,” she says. Volunteer opportunities exist for residents, consumers and business owners to make suggestions that are presented to the board.

Building relationships face-to-face is how Weik was elected five times as a Washington County Commissioner. “Door knocking has been the hallmark of my time in office,” she says. Even the year she ran unopposed, she went to every address, including apartments and a senior living campus. “I would either drop off cards at the front desk or ask if I could offer resident discussions,” she says.

Woodbury constituents are savvy and often asked, “Why are you confident that you can do this?” “I changed one letter,” she reassured them, referring to her precommissioner work with the Food and Drug Administration, transitioning to working with the FTA for Gold Line.

Before becoming an elected commissioner, Weik worked as a senior compliance specialist for Medtronic. “If I can work on class three, life-sustaining, life-supporting medical devices that are implanted, then I can do federal infrastructure,” she says. A heart valve is much smaller than a bridge or a transitway corridor but goes through the same design, engineering and scope of work. “An environmental impact statement equates to a clinical trial. regulatory pathway,” she says.

Transitioning from 14 years as a public official to full retirement will take time. You can hear the enthusiasm in Weik’s voice, demonstrating how much she cares about the community. Hobbies are on the back burner for now as she and her husband work on downsizing their 25-year-old Woodbury home.

“We’re going to [share] our time between Minnesota and somewhere warmer,” she says, not sure where that somewhere will be just yet. She’s intrigued by the latest innovations in modern camper vans but isn’t sure if their next home will have wheels or stay grounded.

In the meantime, Weik regularly volunteers for the Woodbury Lions Club, collecting donated eyeglasses from drop-off locations. She coordinates her pickups with trips to the recycling center and thrift stores as she clears items from home. Her work to preserve the environment comes full circle.

Weik collects an average of 200 glasses each month. She takes any glasses that can’t be repurposed to recycling centers, where trash is processed and used to create energy. The recycling program and creating renewable energy are projects that Weik is well known for as a commissioner. She was a delegate on the Ramsey/Washington Recycling & Energy Board, along with over 20 other appointments she held during her tenure.

“My week has a schedule based on hours for the different destinations,” she says. From donating household items and furniture to Basic Needs Thrift Shop in Cottage Grove to dropping off paint and scrap at the Environmental Center in Woodbury with Lion’s Club pickups in between. The programs Weik championed as a county commissioner are helping her stay connected to the community and sustainably slide into retirement.

Saint Therese of Woodbury

Do ordinary things with extraordinary love. This mission frames the foundation of care at Saint Therese of Woodbury, a nonprofit, Catholic senior living community born out of a simple mission.

“My parents have lived at Saint Therese of Woodbury since it opened … They have comfort knowing that all levels of care are provided at Saint Therese and are available as they age,” Anne says.

The community offers multi-level living situations that address each resident’s current and long-term needs, including independent and assisted living; memory care; long-term care; transitional care; and rehabilitation and home health care.

Securing the confidence of residents and their families is important to staff. “We abide by and exceed industry standards,” says Kathleen McLaughlin, marketing director. “We have oversight from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, which granted the skilled nursing facility a Five-Star Quality Rating; the Minnesota Department of Health; the Minnesota Department of Human Services, as well as a variety of other licensing and professional boards/organizations.”

Kathy, whose husband is in memory care, finds reassurance that he is well taken care of at a time when she is not able to do so. “It is a comfort to me to know that he is

cared for and tended to in ways that I cannot,” she says.

Saint Therese understands the importance of taking a holistic approach when it comes to residents. While their physical/mental health is important, the team also provides opportunities for social engagement.

“Our Community Life Department is committed to offering a range of activities and events,” says Hannah Mallow, community life manager.

Some of those include instruction through COMPAS, which—for over 50 years—has delivered high-caliber arts to the community. Artists’ residencies run for nine weeks and culminate in an event open to family and friends to attend a show/poetry reading/performance. And if the calendar of events pages are any indication, there truly is something for everyone and every ability at Saint Therese.

KEEPING IT LOCAL

Going into 2023, I began thinking about how I can spend my time more getting out in the community to see friendly faces—and meet a couple of new ones, too. Luckily for me, Woodbury makes that easy to do. In a community with so much love to give, it feels like every corner you turn and every shop you step into, you’re running into a pal or meeting a new friend.

Taking this thought into mind, I then started thinking about how I can spend more time supporting my friends, neighbors and acquaintances in Woodbury. Whether it’s visiting many of our locally owned restaurants, stopping into local boutiques or visiting one of the many service providers, there are endless opportunities to spread the love. Here, I’ve broken down how to spend a morning, afternoon and evening around town. I hope you enjoy seeing how I choose to spend a day in Woodbury and maybe even try a few of these spots yourself, too.

MORNING

Breakfast: There’s nothing I love more than having an early morning, grabbing a cup of coffee and heading to breakfast with my loved ones. The breakfast spot I’ve loved since I was a teenager living in Woodbury?

The New Woodbury Cafe. It features a large selection of pancakes, hollandaise-inspired dishes, house specialties and combinations, baked goods, brunch and more. For a little something sweet, look toward the Zydeco French Toast (sourdough bread dipped in French toast batter, topped with blueberries, pecans and

bananas). For a savory taste, look toward Combo #3 (two fresh eggs, choice of applewood smoked bacon, sausage links or freshly sliced ham, housemade hash browns and choice or bread) or the Biscuits and Gravy (country style gravy with Italian sausage over buttermilk biscuits, served with hash browns and fresh eggs). 803 Bielenberg Drive; 651.209.8081; newwoodburycafe.com

For a cuppa Joe or a fresh juice, head to Caribou Coffee (My picks include the Iced Classic Chai Latte or the White Chocolate Espresso Shaker.) or Nékter Juice Bar (My picks include the Peanut Butter Chocolate Protein Functional Smoothie, the Pink Flamingo Regular Smoothie or the Recovery Fresh Juice.) Caribou Coffee, 8320 City Centre Drive; 651.739.7313; caribou coffee.com; Nékter Juice Bar, 1605 Queens Drive; 651.528.7987; nekterjuicebar.com

Something to do: Head to Central Park for a morning spent in our local paradise. It’s home to Lookout Ridge and R.H. Stafford Library and is connected to the YMCA. I suggest renting your next read from our local library and reading a few chapters on the indoor conservatory benches. For families with children, I suggest going to Lookout Ridge to get out some early morning energy. It opens at 10 a.m. Monday–Saturday (it’s closed on Sundays) and is a stimulating environment for children ages 12 and under. For teenagers, check out the Youth and Teen Center at the YMCA, which features a beverage station and areas they can be

with friends or study. Central Park and Lookout Ridge, 8595 Central Park Place; 651.714.3799; woodburymn.gov; Woodbury YMCA, 2175 Radio Drive; 651.731.9507; ymcanorth.org

AFTERNOON

Lunch: Whether you’re gathering with co-workers for a power lunch or grabbing a bite with your family and friends, Crave, located in Woodbury Lakes, has a bustling environment with a strong menu. There are a variety of starters, such as fan-favorite appetizers, soups and salads, while the main courses cover everything from burgers and signature entrées to sushi and poke bowls. My perfect meal? Start by ordering the group Truffle Parmesan Fries, then look toward the Crave Burger or Lemon Garlic Chicken while sipping on a Blueberry Mint Fizz mocktail. Crave also features allergen friendly menus, including vegan and gluten sensitive menus. 9100 Hudson Road Suite 108; 651.756.1000; cravewoodbury.com

For a mid-day energy boost, head to Nautical Bowls, which features refreshing plant-based, gluten-, dairy- and soy-free açaí and smoothie bowls. Choose from 10 premade bowls or build your own—start with a base and choose from several toppings, such as granola and seeds, protein, fruit and different butters or honey. 9955 Hudson Place Suite 550; 651.348.8647; nauticalbowls.com

Something to do: My perfect day includes window shopping— and where better to do so than Woodbury Lakes? Spend an afternoon shopping, grazing and

EVENING

Dinner: The best way to top off any day is with a delicious meal, and my personal pick will always be Italian. What can I say? I enjoy the rich tastes of bread and pasta. Luckily, Woodbury is home to several delicious Italian restaurants, including the locally owned Andiamo Italian

Ristorante. Start your course with Bruschetta (fresh tomato, red onion, basil, garlic and olive oil) or Fried Calamari (served with bell peppers and pepperoncinis), then move into signature entrées: pasta or pizza for the main course. I recommend the Fettuccine Alla Romano, served with chicken and broccoli; the Chicken Parmigiana (bruschetta mix, marinara, mozzarella); or a classic Margherita Pizza (fresh mozzarella, basil, tomato sauce). 1750 Weir Drive; 651.289.2001; andiamomn.com

For a night cap, might I recommend Cravings Wine Bar & Grille? With over 175 bottles from around the world, Cravings Wine Bar & Grille prides itself on offering a glass for every palate. Its cocktail menu includes martinis, mules, signature cocktails and warm cocktails to end the evening. Are you thinking what I’m thinking? Dessert, that is. Choose

from four different types of cake, tiramisu, key lime pie, chocolate pecan tarts and gluten-free alfajores. 755 Bielenberg Drive #108; 651.528.6828; cravingswinebar.com

Something to do: Catch a late night movie at Woodbury 10 Theatre, which is celebrating its 20th anniversary this year. The theater is locally owned and operated by Nathan Block and, according to its website, is one of the last locally owned theaters in the state of Minnesota. The entrance boasts old fashioned arcade games, such as Tetris and Pac-Man, and the concessions include familiar favorites.

Tip: Matinees—any show before 6 p.m.—are only $7/ticket, and Bargain Wednesday offers tickets, food specials and kid’s trays for $5. 1470 Queens Drive; 651.731.0606; woodburytheatre.com

Woodbury Family Chiropractic a large team of physical health providers working together to keep Woodbury healthy and active!

At the cornerstone of every successful business is a mission that supports its direction, and Woodbury Family Chiropractic (WFC) is no different. The clinic inspires patients to live vibrant, healthy and joyful lives by connecting their bodies, minds and spirits through highquality, whole-body chiropractic care, according to CEO Lorraine Smaagaard, DC.

With 13 practitioners, including eight chiropractors, four massage therapists and a fulltime acupuncturist, WFC staff works as a team to ensure the best patient outcomes. “We have doctors who specialize in pediatrics, prenatal, sports medicine techniques and acupuncture, to name a few,” Dr. Smaagaard says. “Having a group practice gives us a dynamic synergy, allowing us to improve our individual practices and techniques and collaborate to ensure excellence in our field for our patients.”

WFC prides itself on being patient-focused. “Being accessible is a big component of that,” Dr. Smaagaard says. This includes offering online scheduling (same day appointments), being in network with insurance plans for acute care and offering discounted wellness rates and member plans.

It’s never too soon to schedule a visit. Several of the doctors have training and certifications in pediatric and prenatal chiropractic care. Kate C. began taking her son to the clinic when he was 3 weeks old. His colic and sleeping habits improved, and continued care has addressed crawling issues. “… as soon as he would get adjusted, he would start crawling normally. We continue to go back because we see a difference,” she says.

In addition to treating children, the practice tends to adults and has additional training in gentle, tonal adjustment techniques for elderly or more sensitive patients.

Most patients seek treatment for knee, rotator cuff or sports injuries; back, neck or shoulder pain; pinched nerves; sciatica and more. The doctors are also trained in cranial adjusting. “This is especially important for headache sufferers, those with chronic sinus or other ENT issues, migraines or TMJ syndromes,” Dr. Smaagaard says.

things to see and do in and around Woodbury

HISTORY IN YOUR BACKYARD

BACK BY POPULAR DEMAND , the Woodbury Heritage Society is again providing the public a chance to take a trip through Woodbury’s past. On August 13 your voyage begins. Pick up your passport, map and directions at the Heritage House on the corner of Lake and Radio Drive any time after 1 p.m.

Be prepared to be amazed as you visit the 10 historic sights in Woodbury. After leaving the Heritage House, you can visit the sites in any order, but plan to end up at the Miller Barn located in Valley Creek Park. Along the way, you will visit a road built before the Civil War for the U.S. Army calvary to travel to Fort Ripley, including the waterhole where the calvary men watered their horses.

You will also visit homes of the earliest pioneers, the churches where they worshipped and their last resting places.

At each site, be sure to have your passport “stamped.” When you reach your last stop, you will be treated to Culvers, prizes, photo opportunities and a free family membership in the Woodbury Heritage Society. There will be a limited number of the society’s newsletters for you to take home and learn even more about Woodbury.

YUM! KITCHEN AND BAKERY IS SET TO OPEN THIS SUMMER.

AFTER A FAILED ATTEMPT

in the restaurant business more than three decades ago and many other years experience on top of that, Patti Soskin didn’t imagine she’d be where she is today.

Now, the owner of popular yum! Kitchen and Bakery is preparing to open a fourth location in Woodbury this summer.

“It’s so exciting,” Soskin says of the restaurant’s growing success. “It’s hard to believe it’s been 17 years since this all started.”

Soskin credits much of the company’s accomplishments to her dedicated team of employees; many have been with yum! from the beginning. “It’s really great to be able to provide opportunities for people to grow in the company,” she says. “We’re like a family. We take care of each other.”

With an extensive menu and growing fan base, readers might wonder: Where did the idea for this restaurant come from? It starts with a little girl’s passion in the kitchen.

Big Dreams

Soskin says she knew early on she wanted to be in the restaurant business. “When I was a little girl, everybody else was playing house, and I played restaurant,” she says.

Growing up, she hosted and waited tables at many different restaurants over the years. When she was 28 years old, she took a leap of faith and opened her own restaurant, Patti’s.

“And I failed,” she says, adding she never thought it was something she’d try again. Wanting to stay in the business, Soskin worked in the food service department at Dayton’s.

Then, a new path came calling. “After Dayton’s, I was going to be a full-time mom,” she says. “I have three kids, and I quit my job.” The stay-at-home venture didn’t last long, if at all.

While grocery shopping, Soskin

connected with Phil Roberts, owner of Parasole Restaurant Holdings and one of her former employers. Roberts encouraged Soskin to do consulting work with him. “I had quit my job on Friday, and by Monday, I was doing consulting work,” she says. “I did that for years.”

A New Chapter

In 2005, one of Soskin’s friends bought a building in St. Louis Park and suggested she open a restaurant there. Memories of Patti’s came flooding back, and Soskin recalls the words “absolutely not” being her response.

“I loved my life. Everything was perfect, and I didn’t want to do that,” she says. But she agreed to look at the building anyway.

Once inside the building, a vision

came to life, and Soskin decided to open a restaurant. She hired a consulting firm to help name the new restaurant, but none of the four pages of options resonated with her.

“In the process of figuring out what we were going to do, one of my girlfriends gave me a cookbook,” she recalls. “She signed it, ‘yum!,’ and I knew that was it.”

From the Start

Soskin says yum! Kitchen and Bakery was a win from the start. Even with limited staff at the beginning, Soskin knew she had struck success. “My mom and dad were [helping out] here, my sisters were working here … every family member I had, had a task,” she says.

And while she says she was confident

in what yum! had to offer, Soskin remained humble. “I felt right away it was a hit, but I never take it for granted,” she says.

Fortunately, yum! Kitchen and Bakery continued to grow in its success. In 2015, the restaurant established a second location in Minnetonka.

After the Minnetonka restaurant opened, Soskin’s husband, Robbie, joined the business venture. With him on board, the couple made the decision to open a third restaurant in St. Paul. “I grew up in St. Paul and felt comfortable with the area,” Soskin says. “We opened that restaurant last year.”

and Soskin realized St. Paul needed one, too.

“Woodbury seemed like the next logical spot for us,” she says, adding the goal is to have it open in July. “When we started thinking about where to go next, Woodbury stood out because it’s a fantastic city. The city has been so welcoming and gracious to us … We’re really excited to bring yum! here.”

Soskin says the building, which was previously home to a buffet, will be completely gutted and renovated to have the traditional yum! look. For Woodbury residents who have never experienced what yum! Kitchen and Bakery has to offer, Soskin offered some insight.

“Everything is made from scratch,” she says. When yum! closes at night, the talented staff begins baking bread for the next morning. Once that is complete, pastries are next on the list. That includes cakes, muffins, scones, cinnamon caramel pull-a-parts and more.

“We put a lot of love into everything right here in our own kitchens,” Soskin says. “The smells, the feels and the control over what the product looks like works well for us. And we know the product is fresh.”

A Family Feel

Soskin says as preparations continue to open the Woodbury location, the yum! Kitchen and Bakery team is excited to become part of the community.

“A few of our managers coming to the Woodbury location have been with us all 17 years,” Soskin says. “They have a lot of experience and knowledge coming with them.”

The owner says the yum! staff take care of each other and customers, too.

“Food is the best commodity in the whole world,” Soskin says. “I love what I do, I love the people I work with and I love our guests. I feel very blessed.”
