BEST OF FAQS

Each year, our Best of St. Croix Valley poll brings together our readers and social media followers, who look forward to supporting local businesses and service providers with their votes.

If you’re new to the Best of St. Croix Valley Readers’ Choice Poll or just curious about the process, read along to discover the ins and outs, so you’re ready to vote next year!

VOTING RAN ONLINE DURING JANUARY

1.

WITH THREE SIMPLE RULES*:

*Any rule not adhered to may have resulted in entire surveys being discarded, and all results were subject to editorial discretion.

FAQS:

How do you choose the categories?

Each year, our editorial and management teams evaluate survey categories to include topics our readers find most relevant. Readers provide feedback, which we appreciate receiving, about categories they’d like to see added or eliminated. You’ll notice several new categories this year!

How does voting work?

We feature an all write-in ballot, so our voters can easily make their top choices. Once voting closed, tabulators determined which businesses were the top vote-getters.

What’s a finalist vs. a winner?

The top three vote-getters in each category become finalists and were announced in the spring on our website. (Once votes are tabulated, our editorial team factchecks the address and contact information for each finalist. If a finalist is no longer a valid selection due to a closed business, etc., the next highest vote-getter(s) moves up to become a finalist.) The top vote-getter is the winner and is announced in June on our website and in our magazine.

Can a business or organization be a finalist if it’s located outside of the magazine’s coverage area?

In order to qualify as a finalist in the survey, each business or organization must be located in the community and/or provide services to local residents.

How can business owners get on next year’s ballot?

We recommend encouraging clients or customers to vote for your business in our next readers’ poll, which goes live on our website in January 2024. (Remind them of the rules, so their ballots are valid.)

I’m a winner! How do I purchase a framed cover?

Winners can request a free digital copy of the Best of 2023 magazine cover design, which also indicates the winning category and the business’s or organization’s name. Winners can also purchase a framed award certificate, which is 14x17 inches and features a black, wood frame. The cost is $110 per item, including shipping and handling, and can be ordered at localmedia.co/awardcertificate. —Editorial Staff

Natural Beauty

The natural world is amazing. Watercolor, an unruly medium, lends itself well to this effort. I can have a plan, but much like nature, watercolor has a plan of its own. I do my best to capture the world I see and experience, but in the end, water wins, paint wins and, hopefully, perfectly imperfect nature wins.

The Secret of the Flower

Summer conjures images of bold and bright flowers reaching out to the sun. The best part of summer, of course, is the flowers, but did you know that both scientific research and traditional medicine indicate that flowers affect your emotional wellbeing and quality of life?

Traditional Chinese medicine has recognized the healing properties of flowers and their uses to lift moods and treat cognitive issues and physical ailments. According to tradition, the secret of the flower lies

within its color. Each color creates a different frequency of light waves which travel through the retina down the optic nerve, setting off a chain reaction within the body. In this mode of thought, the color red is said to stimulate the adrenal glands and boost energy. Yellow light waves stimulate the brain, making one alert and decisive. Orange strengthens the immune system, digestive system and the lungs. Violet cools, alleviates heat rash and sunburn, suppresses hunger, balances metabolism and releases endorphins.

Next time you or a friend are feeling blue, stop and pick up a bloom or two.

Best of Style: The Blazer

The blazer is a wardrobe classic that comes in a variety of silhouettes, fabrications, colors and prints, and can add a polished, sophisticated feel to any outfit. The blazer trends may change, but it is a great staple to have in your wardrobe and can be worn in any season. Right now, the trend is oversized blazers paired with skirts, shorts or dresses in the warmer months, and we are seeing these large jackets paired with pants, leggings or joggers in the cooler months. An easy way to try this trend is with a matching set. If you are more into the classics, try a tweed, black or linen blazer for versatility and an easy, classic styling option. Try pairing the blazer with a simple pair of jeans, a white T-shirt and sneakers, flats or sandals this season. With the blazer being one of the top trends right now, you are sure to find a variety of options out there to try. It is a basic that I am recommending to clients time and time again and styling for not only work outfits, but casually for weekends, as well.

TASTE Blackberry Bliss

Blackberries are a great source of fiber and vitamins C and K, but mostly they’re just delicious. They’re also easy to incorporate into all types of dishes and recipes. Here are a few suggestions to get you started:

» Salads: Blackberries are great in a spinach or arugula salad with poppy seed or balsamic dressing, topped with toasted nuts and tangy soft cheese.

» Smoothies: They blend well with other berries, vanilla, citrus and all stone fruits, especially apricots and peaches.

» Desserts: The options are endless, from cobblers and crumbles to cakes and pies.

» Toppings: Blackberries are a great topper for oatmeal, yogurt, ice cream, toast, cheesecake, angel food, pound cakes and meringues.

» Pairings: As a snack, blackberries are wonderful with strong, somewhat tart, creamy cheeses like blue, goat and brie. They’re also nice with hazelnuts, walnuts, pistachios and almonds.

Did you know? The little hairs on

blackberries help prevent damage to the fruits. They’re called styles.

Tasty Tips:

» Store blackberries in the fridge, but eat them when they are room temperature for maximum flavor.

» Keep them dry, and rinse them just before eating—moisture is a berry’s arch enemy and will promote faster deterioration.

Western Wisconsin Health strives to build a healthier tomorrow.

With a team of 400 experienced employees, Western Wisconsin Health (WWH) has been caring for patients since 1936. The facility sits on over 100 acres, where patients overlook beautiful natural vistas while they focus on healing.

WWH offers world-class care and includes a team of uniquely trained general surgeons. Peter Dahlberg, M.D., Ph.D., has an interest in surgical oncology. His practice includes an array of endoscopic, traditional and minimally invasive procedures.

Ranjit Singh M.D., FACS, focuses on LINX Reflux Management System surgery, which helps patients improve their quality of life and reduce their dependence on daily medications for acid reflux.

Dr. Dahlberg and Dr. Singh offer a variety of options utilizing robotic-assisted surgery with da Vinci ®. This approach uses small incisions and can be used for hernia repair, gallbladder removal, GERD management/TIF procedures (also aiding with Barrett’s esophagus and esophagitis) and LINX procedures.

Robotic-assisted surgery is minimally invasive, resulting in quicker healing times for patients. To date combined, the surgeons have performed more than 1,000 robotic-assisted surgeries. “These services sets WWH apart from other hospitals and surgery centers in our region,” says CEO Eilidh Pederson.

WWH is on the leading edge when it comes to embracing other technological advances. “Our work is focused on finding the latest technological advances to enhance a patient’s experience and the provision of quality care,” says Dr. Dahlberg.

The holistic approach to care is a priority. “Our services and treatments are intended to care for the whole person,” Pederson says. In addition, WWH offers acupuncture, massage, a warm therapeutic pool and a 24/7 fitness center.

WWH offers a breadth of specialty services that are not routinely available in a rural setting, making it the best and often only choice for advanced care. Patients have discovered its benefits. “I received great, compassionate care,” says a recent patient. “I always felt safe and that I was in very competent hands. It was a great experience.”

Comfort and Confidence

Local J. Hilburn stylist opens brick-and-mortar studio.

FOR STILLWATER BUSINESSMAN

Kevin Nyenhuis, a passion for comfortable, confidence-boosting clothing led to something great.

After nine years as a J. Hilburn stylist, Nyenhuis opened a J. Hilburn Stylist Studio in Stillwater at the Valley Ridge Mall in the fall of 2022. Nyenhuis shares that it’s an ideal location to connect to the local community and beyond.

“The company has seen the success of having a brick-and-mortar space,” Nyenhuis says of the 490-square-foot storefront. “My timing was right to do it as spots to lease are difficult to find. And what I found is perfect for a studio. For me to have all the samples here holds

great benefit … The studio is really set up for success.”

J. Hilburn offers luxury, made-tomeasure men’s clothing with the goal to offer quality and personalized options. Nyenhuis says he understands the modern frustrations of shopping for clothes. When he first came across J. Hilburn shirts, he says he was shocked at how well they fit. “I was hooked,” he says.

After five years of being a customer, Nyenhuis took the leap to being an independent consultant. His customer base took off quickly. “I threw a beer party and had 27 friends sign up for fittings,” he recalls of his early days as a new consultant. “All of a sudden, I had a menswear

business … I just had my 415th client a few days ago.”

A Simple Wardrobe

As a graphic designer by trade, Nyenhuis admits he has a “fairly simple, not flashy” wardrobe and has more interest in the quality of fabrics over the style. “[J. Hilburn] works with the best mills in the world,” he says. “These are multigeneration, family-owned businesses that are committed to quality and the environment.”

J. Hilburn started as a shirt company and now offers a little bit of everything from T-shirts to tuxedos, Nyenhuis says. In a world turning to the casual side,

Nyenhuis says he’s selling more custom denim than dress pants these days. “Bad fit never goes away,” he says. “This company fits clothing to the individual man’s preferences.”

Comfort and Comfort Zone

When meeting with clients, Nyenhuis says the options are endless.

“Half of my clients just tell me to style their stuff, and half of them really take an interest in choosing a specific button and adding the contrasting fabric,” he says. Either way, Nyenhuis has built confidence in being able to adjust to clients’ needs. “I can dial in both the fit and style preferences,” he says. “I might push some people to go outside their comfort zones, too. I do that to myself sometimes. The right fit elevates a man above others in the room.”

Nyenhuis says he uses his own personal experiences as a guide. As someone who admits he once wasted money on clothing with a poor fit, he knows it’s important to invest some time into a wardrobe.

“[J. Hilburn] doesn’t make clothes until they’re needed,” he says. “It’s not fast fashion. We’re not filling up a landfill with things that went unsold. I have come to love the company, the ownership and the quality of what I get to deliver. I get texts and emails from clients thanking me because they felt more confident in the wardrobe that I provided.”

A Prime Spot

Meet the new owners of Marine on St. Croix’s Brookside Bar & Grill.

FOOD AND FAVORITE

DINING

SPOTS have a way of elevating a night out with friends, new and old. And a good cut of a prime rib can conjure memories of a classic blast-from-thepast supper club—something Brookside Bar & Grill in Marine on St. Croix knows a little bit about.

“Everybody had been asking for it back,” co-owner, front-of-house

manager and bartender Rosetta

“Rosie” Peters says of the Brookside prime rib—a feature that headlined the menu of Brookside’s “New Year, New Beginnings” celebration this past New Year’s Eve. “I viewed our reopening celebration as the way to bring that back, to show to our long-time customers that we’re listening to the things they love about ‘The Brook.’ Plus, he’s known

for his prime rib,” Peters says, pointing to Brookside co-owner, kitchen manager and lead cook Grayson Taylor.

“When it’s done right, people will always remember it,” Taylor says. Taylor has been working in the kitchen at Brookside for 10 years and dreamed about owning a restaurant, though it happened sooner than he envisioned.

Brookside is a St. Croix Valley staple

and has seen many iterations since its founding as a creamery in 1930. In early 2022, Taylor’s relative stepped in as owner, and a loose agreement was put in place for Peters and Taylor to take over Brookside five years down the road. But in late 2022, plans were expedited. The pair reached out to “newer” locals, Jeremy Chacich and Ross Higgins, who were enthusiastic about becoming coowners, and by December 21, the change in ownership was complete.

All four co-owners bring their own skills to the table. “Not one of us is that unicorn,” Chacich says. “It really is about all of us.” Chacich and Higgins made the move out to Marine on St. Croix from Minneapolis during the pandemic and dove headlong into becoming a part of the tight-knit community. “We moved in and committed to each other and to Marine that we were going to be part of this community. We started making Brookside part of our routine, along with volunteering in the neighborhood, meeting and learning from local business owners. When this opportunity to partner with Rosie and Grayson came about it was an easy decision.”

Higgins brings business development and operations skills to the mix. “We’re in a position where we can experiment a little, make small tweaks and measure the outcome,” Higgins says. “People are so loving and loyal to our business. They’ve been coming here for decades. Everyone knows everyone, and new guests are welcomed like family.”

Though prime rib only comes out for special occasions, there’s so much to enjoy at Brookside. Summer is about the patio. With live music every weekend, bingo and a seasonal menu, the new owners say their business is, and always will be, about bringing people together. You’ll see proof on their Drink Board, a spot to “leave a drink for someone.” In case you missed your neighbor, you can prepay for their drink and write their name on the wall, so it’s the first thing they see when they settle in at Brookside.

ARTS & CULTURE

Lens of a Local Photographer has traveled across the world, but says life in the Valley is truly special.

Photo: Rhett Arens

LOCAL PHOTOGRAPHER Rhett

Arens enjoys early mornings the most — it’s the time of day when the Valley is still quiet. Usually, it’s just him, off exploring and taking his camera with him, hoping to encounter something rare, poignant and beautifully unique.

“The light can be really special at that time of day; there’s some mist and some fog sometimes, the angle of the light is good. So sometimes, I’ll get up, and I’ll go to Prescott, or I’ll go to Hudson or Marine on St. Croix, Taylors Falls, obviously Stillwater, Bayport,” Arens says.

He keeps an open mind when searching for the best shots. “You get into these little back bays, points along the river, or maybe it’s a tree framed up just perfectly against something,” Arens says.

Arens and his wife, Veronica, are both retired and have lived in West Lakeland Township for the past 25 years. Together, they’ve raised two sons and now have two grandsons.

“It’s a beautiful town, Stillwater. I’m very partial to Stillwater. I always say if I was traveling through Europe and came across a scenic town like Stillwater, I would be stopped in my tracks. We tend to take it for granted, living here, but it’s special,” Arens says.

While pursuing photography on the side, Arens also worked full time for 3M for nearly 30 years. He started out in research and development, then later transferred into international business development, sales and marketing.

“I always had a desire to have an outlet for being creative on some level. Also, I’m a pragmatic guy so, well, I can’t go crazy here, I have a family, wife, kids,” he says. “Photography was kind of something where you can jump in and out of it.”

Over the years, his work has been published in the Boundary Waters Journal, The Golfer’s Journal, Lake Superior Magazine, The Paris Review, Travel &

Leisure and more. He’s also provided photography for the Minnesota Twins.

As much as he revels in the views of the St. Croix Valley, Arens confesses to being bit by the travel bug, too. He’s visited more than 60 countries.

“I love how photography helps drive the need to explore, especially when traveling; it pushes me to look for fresh perspectives,” he says. ”I’ve met many wonderful people over the years from all corners of the world. I’m always amazed at how much common ground exists between strangers when you open up conversations.”

His advice for those at the beginning of their photography journey? “Get off the beaten corridors that you’re told to travel. Find those moments,” Arens says.

Lift Dental focuses on personalized patient care.

Lift Dental offers boutique service, featuring exceptional general dentistry and takes pride in delivering customized care, using modern technological advances—in a positive and supportive atmosphere. “We have an exceptional environment here and value the connection we have with our patients,” says Sara Cody, DDS.

Patients appreciate that connection. “I couldn’t be more impressed with Dr. Sara Cody and her entire team,” Jim says. “They’re extremely thorough and take the time to explain what they’re doing in a setting that is clean, bright and relaxed.” Judy says, “My comfort and understanding of what was being done was communicated with so much respect and empathy.”

Lift Dental, located in downtown Stillwater, launched in 2018. “What I love the most about our new space is the feeling of home as you enter,” Dr. Cody says. “You feel like you are in someone’s living room with conversation-style seating, premiere lighting, natural plant life and even fresh cookies, creating a welcoming, relaxed atmosphere for patients.” Patients are also treated to warm hand treatments, aromatherapy, massage dental chairs and heated towels.

Utilizing cutting edge technology, Dr. Cody provides comprehensive general dental care, advanced restorative dentistry, dental implant services, cosmetic dental

treatments, TMJ therapy services, sleep apnea therapy and sedation dentistry. She has invested in CT imaging, digital scanning, laser therapy and onsite IV sedation to offer patients the best in dentistry. (A nurse anesthetist is available to provide individual care during IV sedation cases.)

The most rewarding part of Dr. Cody’s job is transforming lives. “Our reward is to help someone, who has stopped smiling in photos, smile with confidence, or assist patients, who struggle with chewing, to return to eating their favorite foods,” she says.

In addition to its commitment to patients, Lift Dental is community focused and supports Turningpoint for Victims of Domestic and Sexual Abuse and partnered with Rivertown Guardians. “It has warmed our hearts to help support these organizations in a personalized way.”

Carpeting by Mike continues two generations of quality service.

Legacies are important, especially in business. The team with Carpeting by Mike values its continued commitment to quality. “We have the same values that were started in 1973 and have improved them to concierge-level customer service today,” says Typhannie Harker, owner and daughter of founder Michael Faust.

Carpeting by Mike is a full-service flooring store, selling top-of-the-line products that are backed with professional installation and service. “We make sure to find the best products, with the best companies, and offer them with a competitive price and warranty,” Harker says.

Customers will find a wide

assortment of luxury vinyl planking, waterproof woods, hardwoods and, of course, many varieties of carpet patterns and designs. “We have partnered with Mohawk Industries since the early ‘90s, and it has proven a great partnership,” Harker says of the largest manufacturer of flooring that is firmly at the forefront of technology. “My dad always said, ‘If we don’t have it, you don’t need it.’—meaning we are confident that we have the best-of-the-best product lines.”

Homeowners have daily interaction with their flooring and sometimes live with its water damage, stains and wear and tear. It can be difficult to know when the time is right to make a change.

Harker and the team are on hand to guide customers. “Homeowners might not understand the negative mindset that can set in while living with damaged flooring,” Harker says. “We want homeowners to fall in love with their homes again—for their floors to bring them happiness, and we want to be the Flooring Love Matchmakers for them!”

One of the biggest trends in flooring includes waterproof products. “Homeowners are looking for flooring that they can live on and not worry about,” Harker says. “We want to offer them flooring that they can make memories on, not worry about damaging.”

It’s tempting for homeowners to take the DIY route, but Harker cautions

SPONSORED BEST OF 2023 WINNER

against the notion. “Professionals, not only get it done typically faster, but with a higher skillset for those tough corners or finishing touches,” she says, noting that following installation instructions is especially vital if warranty issues arise later. “We stand behind our installation warranty and fix situations or flooring concerns for the first 10 years at no charge,” she says.

From tending to customers’ questions in the store to making good on turn-around times and scheduling, the team is bar none. “We don’t just show you floors,” Harker says. “We explain the difference between fibers, in hard surfaces and in other flooring elements and assist clients in finding products that dovetail with their styles of living.”

Customers attest to its commitment to customer service. “From the first meeting at the showroom to the last phone call to me checking in on how our carpet installation went, Carpeting by Mike was exceptionally professional [and] timely and provided outstanding customer service,” Jacob H. says.

“They were responsive with communication of the date and time, [and] the installation crew worked fast and removed all the debris. Besides the new carpet, you would never have known they were there,” Mandy B. says. “The thick padding added significant value to the already beautiful carpet. After 11 years of heavily trafficked areas worn down from kids and pets, the change was astonishing and noticeably different

to anyone who has come over.”

Supporting customers is just the start for Carpeting by Mike. It sponsors school programs and large and small sports teams; contributes to fundraisers; and donates to non-profits, including Big Brothers Big Sisters of Western Wisconsin and Habitat for Humanity. “We feel very strongly about giving back to the community that gives to us, ”Harker says.

ADD THESE DESTINATIONS TO YOUR SUMMER BUCKET LIST.

Going into 2023, I started thinking about how to be more intentional with my time—and for me, that means traveling. Luckily for us, Minnesota and Wisconsin have beautiful landscapes all around, so we don’t have to travel far for beautiful sights and great food.

Taking this theme of travel into mind, I then began thinking about how I can immerse myself in local sights and sounds by exploring each community in the St. Croix Valley. Here, I’ve broken down how to spend a day in each area of the Valley— starting at the top and ending at the bottom—including a sight to see, a place to eat and something to do. Happy travels!

The North

Sight to See: The popular Franconia Sculpture Park in Schafer draws

close to 200,000 visitors each year and features up to 70 outdoor exhibits and sculptures. Founded in 1996, the nonprofit organization supports local artists through its active artist residency program, which serves more than 40 artists each year. Visitors can expect to see several types of work and engage in art classes, guided tours, summer camps and more. 29836 St. Croix Trail N., Shafer; 651.257.6668; franconia.org

Place to Eat: For a spot known for bringing together community— and a timeless Wisconsin supper club—go to Dalles House Restaurant and Lounge in St. Croix Falls. The atmosphere of locals and tourists, plus live music, create a unique and welcoming environment that’s hard to miss. It’s about community as much as it is American fare at Dalles

House, which encourages diners to enjoy time with loved ones over a glass of wine and a great meal.

720 S. Vincent St., St. Croix Falls, Wisconsin; 715.483.3246; dalleshouse.com

Something to Do: With just over 1,000 residents, Taylors Falls is a quaint town, perfect for a relaxing getaway. Interstate State Park along the St. Croix River features several hiking trails, including the 1.25mile River Trail, ideal for families, and other trails through forests and rock formations that cater to varying levels of ability. Its unique geological formations make it stand out against other state parks, including the world’s deepest glacial potholes.

(It’s not quite what you’re thinking!)

Sight to See: For a complete view of the St. Croix River, go to Lakefront Park in Hudson. Walk down the Hudson Pier Bridge to Hudson Pier Beach on a sweltering summer day, or go to the neighboring park for its outdoor concert series. It’s also home to a boat launch, picnic shelters, a playground area, sand volleyball courts, paved trails and more. First St., Hudson, Wisconsin; 715.386.4765; hudsonwi.gov

Place to Eat: For a taste of Wisconsin, go to Post American Eatery in Hudson. A classic fish fry is served on Mondays and Fridays, plus an entire menu dedicated to American and Italian flavors. The restaurant is located inside of a historic post office building, which once also housed a coffee shop and the Postmark Grille. 225 Locust St., Hudson, Wisconsin; 715.377.4699; posthudson.com

Something to Do: Outdoor adventurers and families looking to get into nature should go to Willow River

State Park in Hudson. The oftvisited park features the stunning Willow Falls and 2,800 acres of countryside. The park also includes areas to bike, boat (including canoeing and kayaking!), fish, hunt, picnic and swim, plus campgrounds for tents and trailers. I recommend hiking the Willow Falls Hill Trail (0.4 miles) in the summer months. The trail goes from the north parking lot directly to Willow Falls. The Nelson Farm Trail (3.7 miles) is especially beautiful in the fall and offers a wider view of the park; this trail includes several habitats, such as wetlands, prairies, a mature oak forest and more. 1034 County Highway A, Hudson, Wisconsin; 715.386.5931; dnr.wisconsin.gov

The West

Sight to See: For a slice of history, visit the Stone House Museum in Marine on St. Croix. History buffs and area residents alike will enjoy the museum, which features photos and crafts, plus articles from daily life that trace the history of the area’s first settlers. It is

housed in what was once the jail and township hall for Marine on St. Croix. Admission is free, though donations are appreciated. 241 Fifth St., Marine on St. Croix; 651.430.1239; marineonstcroix.org

Place to Eat: Summer is the time for sweets, and Selma’s Ice Cream Parlor in Afton is the perfect spot for an afternoon snack. Featuring more than 30 ice cream flavors, this century-old, time-tested ice cream parlor has a flavor for all. My choice? For a sweet scoop, I’ll go for Brownie Cascade; for something on the fruity side, Blueberry Cheesecake. 3419 St. Croix Trail S., Afton; 651.436.5131; selmasicecream.square.site

Something to Do: Head to downtown Stillwater for a day of window shopping. Stillwater’s historic Main Street has something for everyone and features several antique shops, specialty stores and boutiques—plus area businesses, such as spas and salons, bars and restaurants, and more. Family-owned Orchin + Orchin specializes in making the community smile.

Since opening Orchin + Orchin Specialists in Orthodontics in Stillwater in 2021, Drs. Andrew and Jill and their talented team have provided unsurpassed orthodontic care with state-of-the-art technology.

With over 20 years of experience each, they are among North America’s most experienced providers of Invisalign, also using digital technology for braces to provide the best outcomes in the least amount of time.

“I treat my patients like family. Once a patient chooses to work with me, it is a partnership of communication and trust,” says Dr. Jill, adding orthodontics is about marrying science with aesthetics and overall health.

Dr. Andrew is committed to using his decades of private practice and teaching experience to solve complicated issues and address a host of other concerns. Patients are noticing. “I was looking for a provider that not only straightens the teeth, but takes airway into consideration as well, and Dr. Orchin really looks at the big picture when treating patients,” Amy says.

Patients benefit from the practice’s family-focused approach. “[They] treat my son with such care and respect, giving him ample time to ask questions and really be involved in his care and treatment options,” Clark says. “This is especially great, given my child is on the autism spectrum …”

Orthodontic care addresses overall health. “Many people don’t realize that children struggling with teeth grinding, attention issues, bed wetting and snoring, and adults with hypertension, low energy, head and neck pain and weight concerns may have underlying airway issues,” Dr. Jill says.

Drs. Orchin encourage children to receive a complimentary screening by the age of 7, as recommended by the American Association of Orthodontists. And it’s never too late to tend to orthodontic concerns— almost half of their patients are adults.

Orchin + Orchin focuses on results. “From seeing patients make career and lifestyle changes to patients stepping into a confident, empowered version of themselves—it’s an amazing transformation to witness. What we do really is an honor,” Dr. Andrew says.

IN THE WORKS FOR FIREWORKS

Hudson’s Booster Days event brings family-friendly festivities and Bingo.

THE FOURTH OF JULY is coming around soon, and that means the Hudson Boosters members are preparing for the annual festivities in Hudson, Wisconsin. As a community event that showcases Fourth of July fireworks, Booster Days is a fundraiser that supports children participating in sports teams. The money raised goes toward getting equipment and uniforms or maintaining local playing fields for U16 football, baseball and softball. This year’s event is from June 29 to July 2; the carnival will begin on opening day with a parade and car show on July 1 and fireworks on July 2.

Booster Days coordinator Holly Shultz says she looks forward to seeing the community coming together to support the cause each year and enjoy carnival games, food trucks, parade festivities and more. While activities change through the years, Schultz shares a memory she can count on each year. It has something

to do with people calling out, “Bingo!”

The week of the Booster Days festivities, the crew puts up a big, blue bingo tent that takes all morning to assemble. “That has been the original bingo tent, so it is kind of [historic],” Schultz says. The process is worthwhile, as many visitors come in to purchase cards to participate in the tradition and have a chance to win a small cash prize. So, who is ready to play?

Skyline Electric provides experienced service to the northeast suburbs.

Since 2015, Skyline Electric has set out to be “The Friendly Neighborhood Electrician” and narrowed its service area to the northeast suburbs to ensure clients receive focused attention. “We are also nearby if someone has an emergency,” says owner Jeff Lee. “My vision is also to be a positive pillar of the community. Our company strives to give back to local youth sports and other community events.”

Skyline’s primary core value is customer service with a mission to exceed customers’ expectations. “Almost any electrician can fix their problem, but our focus is the overall experience,” Lee says. The team takes great pride in building its business-to-client relationships. “This is our strength. We enjoy people, and it’s the part of our jobs we enjoy most,” he says. “Our team makes sure to take time with customers to answer questions and educate them about electrical systems. We take immense pride in our business being from over 97 percent repeat and referral customers, and I would credit that to our team’s commitment to customer satisfaction and experience.”

Customers have a lot to say when it comes to working with Skyline: “… Communication is above what I expected; the work was completed quickly and professionally …” Another client says, “… Great prices, friendly technician, great

work and awesome customer service.”

Aside from standard electrical work, the team notes an uptick for comfort-related additions and elements, including circuits for electric car charging stations, saunas and hot tubs. In addition to remodeling projects, Skyline recommends that homeowners schedule annual electrical check-ups for their homes. “This is a big topic for us right now,” Lee says. “Electrical maintenance is a huge part of your home’s safety. Everyone should check smoke detectors, ground fault receptacles and other safety devices, but having an electrician do a yearly panel tune-up identifies and corrects minor issues, including loose connections, moisture and overheating issues before they create costly or dangerous situations.”

Sipping on Summer

Local establishments are bringing the heat with flavorful mocktails.

SEE YOU NEXT YEAR, cold and brutal winter. The upcoming, warmer season encourages sunshine and … mocktails? Yes, really—nonalcoholic drinks are the must-try trend this summer. And there is no better time to sip on some flavorful concoctions than when our minds deserve a vacation.

There is a mocktail for nearly every taste bud, whether it is fruity, floral, sweet or tart. Restaurants within the area serve delicious varieties that invite customers, no matter the age, to enjoy a fun beverage. So, stop into some of these locations, and get sipping!

THE TILTED TIKI (STILLWATER)

Head over to The Tilted Tiki to experience an island getaway in downtown Stillwater. The tropical bar and restaurant offers a wide variety of mocktails that contain high-quality, flavorful juices.

Every drink comes accessorized with fruit in fun, tiki-style glasses, as well as unique cups shaped like a unicorn, blowfish, koala, banana and more.

Although this list’s drinks originally come as cocktails, general manager Jesse Estrin says you can ask your bartender to make a nonalcoholic version for all of them.

» Hurricane is one storm you can’t miss. It is a sweet, fruity option with mango, passion fruit, lime and pineapple flavors. A hot choice for visitors to New Orleans, it has a second home at The Tilted Tiki. $7

» Tahitian Outrigger is for the pineapple fanatics. It is primarily a pineapple base, with passion fruit, lime, orgeat (an almond-sweetener syrup) and a splash of lemonade when mixed into a mocktail. $7

» Lava Flow looks as interesting as

it tastes. One of the most popular options at The Tilted Tiki, it is served with pineapple juice and piña colada mix—a blend that is 50 percent coconut and 50 percent pineapple—with strawberry puree floating on the top. $7

PIER 500 (HUDSON, WISCONSIN)

Pier 500 is welcoming no matter the weather. Enjoy outdoor dining when it is warm; or stay warm inside while sipping on something tasty in winter. Plus, it features undeniably great views of the St. Croix River Valley and Hudson Pier.

» When life gives you lemons, drink Lavender Lemonade. It is a sweet and simple mix; classic lemonade is uplifted by floral hints from lavender sugar and lavender syrup with rosemary and mint. This mocktail is the summer-inspired sip you’ve been looking for. $6

» Raspberry Ginger Cider tastes like it sounds, with apple cider, raspberry puree and house-infused ginger syrup and soda. $6

LOLO AMERICAN KITCHEN AND CRAFT BAR (HUDSON, WISCONSIN, AND STILLWATER)

Focusing on street food cuisine, this restaurant has three local locations— one in Wisconsin and two in Minnesota. It’s part of the LoLo Restaurant Group

franchise, which also includes Lolito Cantina, Melt Pizza Company and Stillwater Proper.

“When it comes down to the nonalcoholic cocktails, it’s been a thing of ours since day one 10 years ago [when] we opened up,” says LoLo Restaurant Group owner Joe Ehlenz.

Find these drinks at the Stillwater location:

» If No Shrubs sounds familiar, you might recall TLC’s throwback song No Scrubs. This carbonated mocktail features a berry shrub alongside lemon, rhubarb and raspberry syrup. $5

» Luigi’s Mansion contains a pistachio syrup, with lemon juice and heavy cream that adds richness to the carbonated drink, Ehlenz says. The green pistachios hint at Luigi’s green uniform. $6.

» What About Your Fresno? is carbonated and contains a blueberry-poblano shrub, fresh lemon and fresno (a spiced red chili), bringing a hint of spice and acid. $5

Find these drinks at the Hudson location:

» Winds of Change has strawberry quinine (a tonic syrup), fresh lime, hop water and simple syrup. $5

» Let Kelly Kapowski save you … by the bell. Named after the Saved by the Bell TV show character, this carbonated drink contains muddled cucumber with arugula and lemon flavor profiles, topped with a smoked paprika rim. $5

Make Your Own Mocktail

As summer is rolling in, how about creating and enjoying your own fresh beverage? Ehlenz shares an easy do-it-yourself mocktail recipe that isn’t on any of the LoLo Restaurant Group’s menus.

These ingredients can be found at most major retail liquor stores or online, Ehlenz says.

Recipe:

1 oz. Sharab Shrubs

Thai Basil

½ oz. Monin Blue raspberry syrup

1 oz. lemon juice, freshly squeezed ½ oz. simple syrup 6 oz. soda water

Combine the Sharab Shrubs

Thai Basil with Monin blue raspberry syrup. Add in fresh lemon juice—it must be freshly squeezed—with simple syrup, a 1:1 sugar-to-water ratio. Finish it off with soda water—and voila! You’ve got yourself a bright blue drink to brighten summer days.
