We ventured across the Twin Cities to bring you an array of delectable desserts. From ice cream to stunning macaron towers, sweetness comes in many forms (page 46).

For those looking to include their furry friends in their big day, Doggy Social ensures no family member is left out (page 12). Plus, for mothers of the bride and groom, we’ve compiled a practical guide to wedding planning, full of tips to make the journey smoother (page 16). Speaking of tips, we’ve included advice on dressing for the occasion, helping moms find the perfect look to complement your child’s celebration (page 18).

To kick off this exciting issue, join us for the First Comes Love party at 50th and France on February 23 (page 51). We’ll celebrate not only our inaugural weddings issue, but also the charming local shops that contribute to our community’s vibrant spirit.

We can’t wait to celebrate love and the joy of weddings.

The Transformative Power of Yoga Retreats

Every so often I have a truly pinch me moment in my life. It usually happens around the time I drag out my suitcase to pack for a yoga and meditation retreat. Over the past six years, I have had the pleasure of leading over 15 retreats across four continents. It remains one of my favorite things.

There are so many things that I love about retreats. I love getting to see the world, exploring a new place with a group of like minded people and starting every day with a yoga and meditation class. But, if I’m being honest, one of my favorite things about retreats is how good I feel when I get back. Even if I’m leading the retreat, I come home feeling lighter, brighter and happier. When I return from a retreat, I feel like I took a true vacation, one where I honored my body, gave myself an emotional retreat and turned the volume down on stress and burnout. I just feel good. This time of year typically has us doing two things. We are simultaneously looking for a way to escape the Minnesota winter, and we are looking to reevaluate our habits, routines and wellness goals. So why not do both? If you haven’t considered a wellness retreat before, maybe this year will be the one where you come back from a vacation truly feeling better.

Building Success

Finding Voice Through Art

Minnesota author Cristina Oxtra’s debut picture book stars a Filipina child and her grandfather whose connection extends beyond spoken words.

Maria and Lolo love drawing together. Lolo can conjure anything at his drawing table including blooming sampaguita (the Philippines’ national flower), fried plantains and Maya birds in the guava tree.

Over the next year, Lolo becomes ill, and Maria notices gradual changes in her grandfather. When he is no longer able to say what he wants, Maria has the idea to bring him his drawing supplies, and Lolo draws what was on his mind.

Illustrations by Filipino artist Jamie Bauza feature black-and-white pencil for Lolo and Maria’s drawings and playful colorful illustrations to conjure the rest of the warm familial world in this story. What Lolo Wants is a cozy story about connection through generations and the various ways we can communicate. It might even serve as a nudge to get out pencil and paper and draw with someone you love.

Doggy Social helps couples include pets in the big day.

ONE ISN’T SURPRISED to see a best man at a wedding, but don’t forget about including a good boy! (or girl) Since 2018, Doggy Social helps wedding couples include one of their favorite family members—their dogs—in some or all of the events of the day.

Wedding days are full of love—and logistics. Adding in the unpredictability of a dog at the event might be a bit problematic, but that doesn’t seem to deter a lot of couples. “Dogs are family,” founder Lara Leinen says. “They’re our children, and they’re really special.

“My pet was my best friend throughout my 20s and 30s,” Leinen says. “I thought it would be really special to include my fur baby in my wedding, but I wasn’t going to put that responsibility on friends or family.” Unfortunately, Leinen couldn’t find a service to help facilitate her wish. That experience ignited her idea to open Doggy Social, so other couples could enjoy having their dogs play a role in their ceremony, photography sessions and receptions.

Pet attendants receive Doggy Social training, learning the tricks of the trade. Understanding how to handle dogs is obviously important, but customer service also tops the list. “You have to love animals, and you have to love people,” Leinen says about being part of the team.

Once on board, pet attendants take care of getting the dogs right where they need to be, including out for a potty stop or away for a quick kibble take five. While Doggy Social assists throughout the event, it also aids in getting the dogs to and from the venues and can provide boarding services, which can include overnight dog sitting in the clients’ home.

Some dogs are more capable than others when it comes to taking on special ceremony roles. While some pets can walk down an aisle with ease as a ring bearer or flower pup and are focused and not easily distracted, others are just the opposite. No worries here. “We meet dogs where they’re at,” Leinen says.

And speaking of meeting, since it launched, Doggy Social has worked with more than 500 dogs, starting in Minnesota and serving Arizona, Colorado, Illinois, Montana, South

Dakota and Wisconsin. While the business could expand even more, Leinen has stipulations. “I’ve said no franchising,” she says. “I really want to make sure our service meets my expectations, and I can’t do that with a franchise.”

If you think you’ve heard it all, consider this: In special instances, dogs can serve as wedding witnesses. (They sign with inked paws.) “Your pet can be a witness in Colorado,” Leinen says. “While it’s not yet allowed in Minnesota, it’s coming.”

SHARING THE SPOTLIGHT

Sara Trautz and Lucas Yamamura have had their Australian Labradoodle, Rocky, since she was a puppy. “This was exactly what I was looking for,” Trautz says of Doggy Social. “We didn’t have to worry about her. We could be there at the wedding the whole time and not have to think about it.”

On the big day, Doggy Social played with Rocky to tire her out before bringing her to the wedding at the Machine Shop in Minneapolis. Just a year old at the time, Rocky still had plenty of energy but was peaceful enough to pose for photos. “She was calmer than she would have been,” says Trautz, who lives in Edina. “We had the pictures taken, and Doggy Social took her home after ward and stayed with her for a while.”

The photos featuring Rocky are some of Trautz’s most treasured memo ries from the wedding. They’re framed throughout her home, and one even graces the homescreen of her phone.

“Those are some of my favorite pictures that we got,” she says. “I call them her glamour shots.”

WELLNESS

Gold Standard

Efficacy, transparency and accessibility are at the forefront of Cleo Skin + Laser.

Managing editor Hailey Almsted shares her experience at Cleo Skin + Laser, where she learned about the benefits of laser facials and other services.

WALKING INTO Cleo Skin + Laser, I’m greeted by a warm and welcoming atmosphere. I sit with co-founder and co-CEO Amber McMillan to discuss how to work through my skin problems. McMillan, who has been in the wellness, fitness and nutrition space for two decades, is reassuring in treating my concerns.

Located at 50th and France, Cleo Skin + Laser offers several laser-based services, including the Glass Skin and Skin Shield laser facials, Radio Frequency (RF) Microneedling, and laser hair and tattoo removal. Co-founders and co-CEOs McMillan and Brian DeRosa founded Cleo out of frustration with the lack of accessibility and validation in the skin care world. “Laser treatments are the gold standard for addressing a wide variety of skin concerns, ranging from acne, wrinkles and rosacea to unwanted body hair,” DeRosa says. “We started Cleo to make these treatments more accessible and take the stress out of advanced skin care.”

As a consumer, I approach the Glass Skin Laser Facial with a bit of trepidation—I’ve never had any laser services

“We are going to create changes in the deep layers of your skin ... As a part of your monthly routine, you will change your skin.”

before—but I’m easily relieved when the service starts. The therapeutic heat dissipates into the deep layers of my skin, and I walk out of Cleo no more than 20 minutes later with no irritation or redness. In the following days, my skin is noticeably smoother and clearer. “It’s 10 times better than any topical facial you’ll get,” McMillan says of this service. “It’s going to help get to those deep layers of the skin to help create collagen production [while] vaporizing dirt and bacteria in your pores [and] helping to just overall enhance the appearance of your skin over time.”

Areas of concern may include acne, fine lines, hyperpigmentation, scarring, wrinkles or other skin conditions, and the laser facial treatments utilize premier Candela Gentlemax Pro Plus and Candela Picoway Resolve lasers to deliver high-quality results. The Candela Matrix Device, used for RF microneedling, is a more intensive treatment, utilizing radio frequency energy and microneedling to refine texture and tone. For both services, McMillan recommends at least three to four treatments to achieve the desired results. “That’s going to be the best. Then, you can kind of go on maintenance,” she says. McMillan notes that Cleo’s services are ideal for those preparing for big events—such as bridal showers, bachelorette or bachelor parties and wedding days—and adds that it’s for everyone, regardless of age or gender. “We would love … anyone in the wedding party that are thinking, ‘I know I’m going to be going to something special,’” she says. “We can definitely get your skin ready for your event.”

Although Cleo offers a Red Carpet Facial, which utilizes red light and radio frequency therapy typically done on the day of your event, most services are needed in the months leading up to your special day. “It’s not a one-anddone,” McMillan says. “You’re going to feel better and glow after one, but I liken this to working out or strength training. It’s not ‘go to the gym one time.’ We are going to create changes in the deep layers of your skin ... As a part of your monthly routine, you will change your skin.”

ENLIGHTEN

Parent Primer

Preparation is key when it comes to marking a child’s marriage milestone.

THE WEDDING. While we all know who the stars of this show are, there are some supporting characters who also have to-do lists and reams of reminders before the main event.

Enter: The Parents

If there was ever a delta in the bookstore aisle, it might be for What to Expect When Your Child is Expecting … to Get Married. While there are variations when it comes to involvement levels and expectations, there are some basic elements that either side of the parent aisle should consider.

» Establish early on each side’s financial obligations. Is the couple

shouldering all or part of the costs, or are both sets of parents pitching in for the wedding? Do plans go the “traditional” route with parents of the groom footing the floral and rehearsal dinner bill, for example? Talk. Now. It can alleviate confusion and potential choppy feelings later.

» Speaking of communication, discuss whether or not parents will be listed on the invitations.

» Be sure that all sides, including the couple, have a clear idea about the number of guests allotted per family on the invite list.

» Are there important cultural, familial or religious traditions that families would like included in the day’s events?

» If the wedding is out of town, there can be a lot to remember while packing. If possible when flying, use carry-on luggage for important items— jewelry, rehearsal and wedding outfits and the like.

» Pack “just in case” medications (for allergies, anxiety, intestinal issues, etc. You get the picture.) No one wants to dash to the pharmacy or make latenight calls to a doctor.

» Photographers appreciate lists of must-have photos. Be clear on how many photos all sides can request. Be sure potential conflicts or concerns are addressed well before posing begins.

» Is there a guest who might require some “extra attention”? Assign a trusted family member (outside the immediate family) or friend to assist in getting that person from Point A to Point B or monitor any troublesome situations—health-related or otherwise.

» If beloved family members or friends can’t attend, consider livestreaming the ceremony, so they feel included and you can feel their presence.

» If parent speeches are part of the groom’s dinner or reception program, when will they occur? Traditions are shifting on this one, so get that clarified.

» Comfort is key. Nowhere does it say that mothers can’t have an outfit change for the reception. After the primary photos are complete, why not slip into something more … breathable and less confining? (Bring extra undergarments, and ditch the shapeware at this point. Be sure to run the second look by the couple.)

» Wearing meaningful jewelry can be a wonderful way to make the day even more memorable. Parents, if you wear a family heirloom or one of your special pieces to any of the wedding events (engagement party, shower, rehearsal, ceremony or reception), make note of that. Someday, gift the bride, groom or grandchild with the piece and a note reminding them of the jewelry’s special history.

Once the day arrives—and it does!— embrace the joy, and don’t concern yourself with minor hiccups. Unless it’s downright catastrophic, guests rarely notice tiny missteps. Parents, you don’t get this day back, so delight in knowing that you’ve played an important part in helping your child reach this milestone—and you’ve reached one, too! Enter: The In-Laws.

Redefining Tradition

How one local dress shop is helping mothers of brides and grooms find the perfect fit.

Weddings are momentous occasions that call for dressing your best. Nancy Shank, owner of Dress Up Go Out (Dugo) in Edina has perfected the market for mothers of the bride and groom who are searching for a signature outfit to wear to one of the most important events of their lives, all while feeling their absolute best.

Growing up, Shank had exposure to retail and fashion at a young age because her mother, Betty Shank, was a clothing designer, went to design school and crafted a variety of items, including wedding dresses. Often Shank and her mother could be found at fabric stores, picking out patterns and textures for Shank’s wardrobe, which her mother crafted completely by hand. “I could draw a picture for my mom of what I dreamt of wearing, and she would make it for me,” Shank says. “I learned a lot about fit. In fact, my mother also wrote a book about fitting clothes before you cut and taught classes about fitting.” These early lessons were integral to Shank’s understanding of fashion, especially in regard to weddings.

Her passion for fashion bled into her early adulthood, working at major retail players, such as Dayton’s and Harold’s, and local stores, including Sonnies in the Galleria. She opened her own space in the Galleria—Dugo—where she successfully ran her business for 15 years before moving to the current retail space at 50th and France. In addition to the main attire, Dugo offers a full array of accessories. From classic jewelry pieces to evening bags, it’s a one-stop shop.

Shank’s specialty is helping women select the perfect outfit. She says a handful of factors come into play when choosing a dress. The date of the event, the color scheme of the wedding and the bride’s desires are key elements to the puzzle. Shank says making sure the outfit for any mother aligns with her own style and personality is of the utmost importance. “We have a certain way of summing up what a person’s ‘look’ is when they come in,” she says. “Some people come in with makeup and jewelry, so they might want a more feminine option. Others may come in with a more neutral palette and need a timeless piece.” She emphasizes the intention is not to match, but rather to blend with the wedding party and create a great color story.

Changing the narrative around dressing mothers for weddings takes forethought and special consideration. “If you’re not a mother of the bride or groom, you don’t pay attention until it’s your turn,” she says. When it comes to the big day, couples should plan outfits for the wedding party and the family. Doing so creates a complete picture that encompasses all who are closest to them. When everyone looks and feels their best, that’s certainly cause for celebration.

EDITORS SHARE THE STORIES BEHIND THEIR UNIQUE, INTIMATE WEDDINGS.

The celebration of love, unity and the start of a new chapter in life—weddings bring together family, friends and cherished traditions while creating new memories to last a lifetime. In this, our debut wedding issue, we’re pleased to share the beautiful wedding stories of two of our staff members: Hailey Almsted, managing editor and editor of Woodbury and Maple Grove magazines, and Zoe Yates, editor of St. Croix Valley and White Bear Lake magazines. Come along, as they share a closer view into their special days, filled with unique touches and personal moments—reflective of their individual love stories. It all begins with that first meeting …

While they both grew up in Woodbury, Hailey and Nathan didn’t cross paths until meeting as incoming ninth graders at Woodbury High School; they were 13 and 14 years old at the

time. After growing together through some of life’s important milestones, the couple was married on a lovely September day at the Hewing Hotel in Minneapolis, where, amid the rhythm of the city, the couple curated a quietly intimate ceremony, ideally suited to their style.

On the campus of Western Washington University in Bellingham, Washington, the future was foretold in more than one way. Zoe and October met while working on staff for a student magazine! After graduating and eventually moving across the country to the Midwest, the couple exchanged vows on a warm June day on their idyllic property in Polk County, Wisconsin. The scene was something only they could create as bucolic beauty and beloved family and friends came together.

WHAT INSPIRED YOUR WEDDING DAY AESTHETIC AND AMBIANCE?

Hailey Almsted (HA): We both knew we wanted a more intimate wedding with the people closest to our hearts. Our two-year engagement allowed us plenty of time to focus on the elements we truly desired. We blended the elegance of traditional weddings with the peacefulness of elopements. To ease our wedding day jitters, we chose a private first look and personal vow reading before the ceremony. Into the evening, we opted for a dinner party atmosphere, which we and our 40 guests enjoyed. Our day was about us—and we felt surrounded by love.

Zoe Yates (ZY): We decided early on that we wanted a wedding that was true to our relationship and lifestyle, fun for our 60 guests and as sustainable and community-focused as possible. During our venue search, it became clear that our 5-acre property would be the best place to host our wedding, which

we dubbed Zoctober Fest. This choice allowed us to spend more time with our friends (many camped on our land) and invest in home and property renovations.

WHAT SPECIAL DETAILS AND TRADITIONS WERE INCORPORATED INTO YOUR WEDDING DAY?

HA: Our ceremony was highly curated for us as a couple. We began with a ring-warming ceremony, where each guest held our rings, silently warming them with blessings, prayers and wishes for our marriage. At the same time, our officiant, my aunt Nicole Almsted, read sentiments she had gathered from several of our family members about how our love has impacted their lives. Following our traditional vows, we held a unity candle ceremony with our mothers. Finally, we honored both of our grandmothers, who had lifelong marriages to our grandfathers, by asking them to sign our marriage certificate—another tearful moment for all.

October and Zoe Yates

ZY: The morning of our wedding, we chose a private vow/ letter exchange with our photographer out of earshot. During our ceremony, we did a handfasting ceremony, a Celtic ritual in which two hands are joined with a cord to symbolize the binding of two lives and read mirrored vows that incorporated our shared Celtic and Scandinavian heritages that was deeply personal to our relationship. My friends gathered flowers for the reception tables, and we had a DIY beverage station and a homemade taco bar. We purchased secondhand plates, compostable utensils and Mason jars that we’ll reuse for canning. For dessert, we had an assortment of cakes, including one prepared by my 95-year-old great-grandmother that was topped with the cake topper from her wedding.

WHAT UNIQUE TOUCHES MADE YOUR WEDDING MEMORABLE FOR GUESTS?

HA: First, our favors: framed customized sketches of our guests created in real time by Maria Ahrens. It’s a joy to visit our family and friends and see the sketches displayed in their homes. We had disposable cameras around from start to end, but we didn’t develop the photos until our first anniversary in September. Lastly, we had a traditional write-in guest book, paired with a vintage phone from After the Tone, where our guests left us voicemails and well wishes. We treasure hearing the voices of family and friends, who were so important to us on our special day.

ZY: The informality of our wedding day was a breath of fresh air for many of our guests. At the comfort of our home, there was an opportunity for everyone to relax and play. Our chickens roamed the property. My grandpa organized a game of Hammerschlagen with a giant log he procured. We had a bonfire, and the kids enjoyed racing around our forest trail and climbing tiers of hammocks hung from our white pines. Our friends played live music late into the evening, and we danced in the grass under the full Strawberry Moon.

Hailey and Nathan Almsted:

Romantic, magical and elegant

The bride’s lustrous satin gown from Vow’d Weddings was altered and customized by Heather Baldridge from Custom Sewing by Heather, who added satin buttons—flown in from Serbia—down the back of the gown. The look was paired with a chapel-length, angel-cut pearl veil from Tailored Tulle, pearl-drop earrings and white, satin heels, featuring dazzling bows. In the evening, the veil was exchanged for pearl gloves, also from Tailored Tulle.

The groom’s suit, from St. Paul’s Milbern Clothing Co., included a sophisticated black jacket with satin lapels and a textured floral tie. His look was complete with Calvin Klein Brodie Oxford shoes and a gift from his bride: custom cufflinks adorned with the images of their pets.

Zoe and October Yates: Sustainable, free-flowing and joyous

The bride’s vintage dress was purchased and altered at Sienna Cole Bridal. Owner Lisa Ramlet replaced the original skirt with a flowy, organic fabric. The look was balanced with her greatgrandmother’s pearl jewelry, secondhand clogs and a blusher veil (also from Sienna Cole).

The groom’s brown, three-piece custom suit from Milbern Clothing Co. was inspired—in fit, style and material—by 1930s cinema stars like Jimmy Stewart. An acorn-patterned tie and boots from Red Wing Shoes completed the look.

ALWAYS BY MY SIDE

Love in all its beautiful forms graced the union of Erin Hassanzadeh and Eric Nelson. The couple exchanged vows in a heartfelt celebration at the St. Paul College Club in October. Their wedding was a poignant and uniquely meaningful event, drawing together family and friends while lovingly honoring the memories of their late fathers, both of whom had passed away in the year prior. “This was an event for us but also for all of our friends and family,” Hassanzadeh says.

The Meet Cute

The first few chapters of their love story read like a romance novel. Nelson was attending a conference, and Hassanzadeh, then a TV news reporter in Omaha, Nebraska, was covering the event. “We ran into each other on the last day of the conference,” Nelson says. “We decided to meet for coffee the next day. Coffee turned into lunch, and lunch turned into dinner and I ended up pushing my flight back.” Thus began a three-year, long-distance relationship. Hassanzadeh moved back home to Minnesota to work for WCCO TV. Then COVID-19 started. “Rather than us being apart for some unknown amount of time, I would come out to Minnesota. I haven’t left,” Nelson says.

The Proposal

The couple’s proposal was equally meaningful, taking place during a trip with friends Kelsey Williams and Sebastian Weber to Sedona, Arizona, in 2022. While the ladies spent the day out at the

A celebration of love honors the past, cherishes the present and sets up hope for a bright future.

“The photos with grandma’s car … are my favorites. They exude that quiet, confident elegance that I felt from them all day,” photographer Zoe Yates says. “There was this moment they could be together, cuddle and take it all in. Wedding days go by so fast. When you can have quiet moments together, those images are what encapsulate the day best. I love the colors and the blue; the florals match the car so beautifully.”

“We had oranges, blues, deep rust and blushes. We had the Sedona sunset colors,” Erin Hassanzadeh says.

spa, Nelson and Weber planned a scavenger hunt around Sedona that ended at a beautiful winery. “The winery had an old church in the backyard, and when she got to that old church, I had the ring in my back pocket and got down on one knee,” Nelson says.

Staying True

Hassanzadeh didn’t have a theme in mind for the wedding. She wanted to stay true to herself. For couples planning a wedding, she says, “It can be hard not to follow trends. Really take the time to sit and think about what you like or what you like the look of, as opposed to letting people choose for you or picking from three options or picking what’s on Pinterest. Don’t be afraid to do what you

really like instead of what is really trendy at the time.”

What spoke to her and Nelson was the gorgeous Sedona sunset they saw during their engagement trip. Hassanzadeh envisioned a cozy fall day with the warm tones of a Sedona sky in mind—orange, blue, deep rust and blush. Her wedding party dressed in all those hues.

All they needed was the perfect backdrop. They looked at barns, banquet halls and more. When they walked into the St. Paul College Club, everything fell into place. “There wasn’t a major theme or inspiration as much as we could envision our family and friends mingling there and having a special, memorable experience,” she says. “On the classic side. Effortless but with a sentimental touch.”

A Family Affair

Sentimental and personal touches were thoughtfully woven into their day, from Hassanzadeh’s grandmother’s blue Volkswagen convertible parked out front to photos of their parents and grandparents on their wedding days. Hassanzadeh also incorporated elements from her Persian heritage, including a sugar ceremony, which symbolized sweetening the marriage.

It was just one of the ways she honored the memory of her father, Mo Hassanzadeh, the owner of TJ’s of Edina. “Both of our dads passed in the year leading up to our wedding, unexpectedly,” she says. “So incorporating that was really important to me. That was something during the wedding where I felt that he was remembered, but it’s also

us moving forward with our life.”

Her mother, Amy Hassanzadeh, walked her down the aisle, but she made sure her father was with her every step of the way. “I did have a piece of fabric from one of my dad’s shirts stitched into my dress,” she says. “You couldn’t see it, but I knew that it was there. I also had a cuff from one of his shirts. It was what banded my bouquet together. It’s a cuff from his shirt that was pink. He’s there in the bouquet and stitched into the dress.”

As they continue their journey together, the couple’s wedding was not only a celebration of love, but also of family and the people who shaped their lives. “Our friends and family gave heartfelt and sentimental speeches,” Hassanzadeh says. “It was a testament to this being an event not just for us, but for all our loved ones.”

“Bringing in her Persian heritage and doing the sofreh table was special. Watching the women in her family give gifts to the couple and do the sugar ceremony and just the smiles, them sitting there and taking it all in was really sweet to see. Capturing that was an honor and just so beautiful to watch them blend their cultures and make their ceremony everything they wanted it to be,” Zoe Yates says.

“Erin and Eric put a lot of effort and thought into what was going to be at their ceremony. One of the really hard things about that year for them was they lost their dads [Mo Hassanzadeh and Gene Nelson]. Leading up to the wedding, they were really intentional about having their fathers be a part of the wedding,” Zoe Yates says.

Erin Hassanzadeh took the cuff from one of her father’s pink shirts and added some lace detailing to it. “It was what banded my bouquet together,” she says. “He’s there in the bouquet.”

Snowy Serenity

Capturing winter’s quiet beauty in Pamela Park.

Last winter was anything but typical for Minnesota—a season of mostly “winter light.” So when local photographer Deanne Probst saw the snow falling in March 2024, she grabbed her camera and went to Pamela Park.

“I had done little winter photography due to our dry winter, and these ideal conditions beckoned,” Probst says. “We had a rare snowy day with soft, large snowflakes, falling straight and silently down.”

Probst’s photo is a south-facing view of the channel that connects Lake Pamela to Minnehaha Creek.

“I love my Pamela Park neighbors and neighborhood—and almost daily walk the wooded paths and enjoy the seasonal beauty of our local park,” she says. “This image conveys the very peaceful, calm and quiet feeling I experienced that March day.” —Feroza Mehta
