PARTNERING for HEALTHY COMMUNITIES

TEN YEARS

TOGETHER

dear friend: Ten years ago, Local Matters was founded by two visionary leaders, Michael Jones and Noreen Warnock, with two guiding principles: everyone has the right to good food; and we have to reverse the growing crisis of diet-related disease. For Michael and Noreen, it was impossible to ignore the prediction that the generation of children born in the year 2000 would be the first in modern history to have shorter lives than their parents, or the fact that many children did not have access to healthy food in their neighborhood. They were driven to act. Thankfully, you agree that we need to address these urgent issues and have moved forward with us – whether we’ve just met, or whether you’ve known about our work for ten years. Local Matters maintains the bold vision of a community free from diet-related chronic disease where everyone has access to good food. Over the past seven years, we’ve both been fortunate to work with a team that lives its values of food justice, education, advocacy, celebration, inclusion, and collaborative leadership in service to our mission. Whether it is the immersive experience of building food acceptance and changing the food environment at a preschool, or teaching the next generation of doctors to provide practical nutrition advice to their future patients, we are supporting transformation for thousands every year. We are motivated by the change and growth we see as we help kids and adults build healthy habits and dispel myths about food choices and behaviors. Small moments — like the preschoolers who shout for green smoothies and the diabetes patient who feels empowered to make lasting changes — add up to a generation of change. We hope that you have seen this transformation first-hand or will experience it with us soon. This retrospective annual report aims to bring you closer to why Local Matters is needed, as well as how we have adapted and grown to address complex conditions in Columbus and beyond. Thank you for your commitment to creating healthier communities through food education, access, and advocacy.

TEN YEARS __________________ TOGETHER We cheer people on, give them tools to succeed. We expect them to do well, try new things, and make those steps to change. Just keep watering them and eventually they will grow. Monique McCoy Lead Food Educator

As our food educators were wrapping up Food Matters curriculum before a recent break, they were focused on delivering as much content as possible to classrooms full of restless kids. When it was time to finish up a final lesson, they were interrupted with a surprise: thank you notes from all of their students. Here are some of our favorites: “ Thank you for coming and teaching us about food, vitamins, and how to stay healthy... I want to say that you’ve taught me how to keep my body healthy. So, now because of that, my body is healthy and strong.” “ Thank you for spending time with us and teaching us. I loved trying different food like kale chips, salad, my favorite potatoes, cranberries, and smoothies. At home I made kale chips and I put olives on it. I liked it because it was flavorful. I liked it when you told us about the different vitamins A, C, B, E, K and D. Thank you for everything you have done.”
