Naturalistic style at the Chelsea Flower Show

What is this style that we loosely call naturalistic planting? If a vision of opposites helps to define the image, a formal garden will come close.

Think of the antithesis, and you’re nearly there.

A naturalistic garden could be described as wild, but if it’s been designed this way, it’s anything but. Certainly, plants drive the design. You might not associate it with a closely mown lawn or perfectly straight paths. Although, anything goes – and there’s no reason why you shouldn’t combine a naturalistic border with a neat and tidy lawn, or position it close to an undeviating hard surface.

A planting scheme that is full to overflowing with perennials, together with grasses and some structural plants too, appears to work in partnership with nature. It’s a form of re-wilding the borders whilst still maintaining some sort of control over the appearance. This idea of wildness is by no means new. Indeed, William Robinson, born in Ireland in 1838, wrote The Wild Garden in 1870. He was one of the most respected garden writers and horticulturists of his time.

The most successful of all plants – grass Grasses certainly have the ability to soften the landscape, forming bold statements of shape and form when used in drifts, clumps and swathes. Their flower and seed heads move in the breeze and merge effortlessly into nature.

The naturalistic approach to gardening considers ecology as an important part of the process, therefore habitat potential of a planting scheme is a priority. Wildlife can abound in the damp

understorey where there is opportunity for nest building and feasting on seed.

Grass, so it seems, is no longer just to walk on, its use has progressed. It is an undeniably successful plant that covers ground in just about every country. Just leave a patch of bare soil and sooner or later grass will appear. There are more than 10,000 different species plus perhaps 5,000 sedges and rushes, so it’s easy to see why we can access so many variations in colour, shape, form and texture.

Use grass for structural planting, to divide up your space in an informal way, to create moody areas, fill in bare spaces under trees, create wonderful texture and more. The uses for ornamental grasses are limitless.

Gardens to visit Consider the High Line in New York, for which talented designer Piet Oudolf was partly responsible. This influential Dutchman and Henk Gerritson, a former artist from the Netherlands, are known for their ‘new wave planting’ style of ornamental grasses and perennials. Pensthorpe Natural Park Millennium Gardens in Norfolk is another fine example of Oudolf’s stunning work.

The Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park, created for the London Olympic Games in 2012, is a variation on a similar theme. The planting was designed by Nigel Dunnett and Professor James Hitchmough. They are pioneers of ecological and innovative approaches to planting within public spaces, aiming to integrate ecology and horticulture in a most effective and attractive manner.

Following a PICKLE TRAY and POPPADUM, I selected CHICKEN TIKKA (chicken breast pieces in a spicy marinade and cooked over charcoal) for the starter. I opted for PRAWN KORMA, from the Signature range (mixture of spices, including ground coriander and cumin, combined with yogurt). A most splendid following after the starter. For sides I chose Mushroom Rice plus Peshwari Naan. The overall flavours complemented each other perfectly. ‘Compliments to Chef’ were duly awarded. I went for CLASSIC CHOCOLATE FUDGE CAKE (a chocoholic’s delight) for dessert. With Freddie’s desserts located just next door, a good number of desserts are available, such as waffles, puddings, cheesecakes, sundaes and cookie Al Naseeb, 45 Market Place, dough.

The best gadgets for holiday travel If you’re travelling with gadgets, the most pressing issue is keeping them charged. While you can take chargers for everything and use a plug adapter, taking a multi-device charger is a much better – and lighter – option. But beware if you’re travelling outside the UK, because post-Brexit many networks have reintroduced roaming charges for using your mobile abroad. To avoid expensive fees, consider turning off mobile data when abroad and only use apps and internet sites via Wi-Fi.

Overestimating your mileage can ramp up your policy cost, so be as accurate as possible to help reduce cost.

Pay for your insurance in full If you’re able to pay for your insurance policy in full rather than monthly then you’ll avoid paying interest on your policy. Of course, if spreading your insurance policy over twelve months avoids nancial pressure elsewhere, then this option is still valid and ensures you’re covered.

The same applies to vehicle excise duty (road tax). Though you can split it into smaller monthly payments, you’ll save money by paying it in full for a twelve month period.

How can I cut down costs when driving? issues that could cause future problems.

Regular servicing brings down day-to-day costs through better fuel economy and lower oil use.

Avoid premium fuels To keep costs down it’s better to opt for regular fuel, and although premium fuels are required by many sports and performance vehicles, regular petrol and diesel cars will run perfectly well on ‘standard’ fuel.

Look around for the cheapest fuel Make a note of your cheapest local station, but don’t be tempted to drive out of your way for cheaper fuel, as this is more expensive in the long run. If possible, avoid expensive motorway fuel.

Check your tyres Tyres have a big impact on fuel usage and today’s ‘eco’ tyre options offer a lower rolling resistance that help improve your car’s fuel economy. There’s no loss of grip or reduction in safety with these tyres, either.

Keep your tyres at the right pressure If your tyres are in good condition, however, then stick with them. Make sure they’re inated to the correct pressures as this can have a real impact on fuel usage.

An under-inated tyre causes your car to use more fuel, so top them up regularly. The manufacturer’s recommended pressures will be in a panel behind the fuel ller ap, in the door shuts or in the vehicle’s handbook.

Remove unwanted items

Extra weight in your car uses up fuel, so take out coats, boxes and bags that you don’t need.

Also, remove roof racks or top boxes that aren’t being used, as they have a huge impact on fuel economy.

“Hey Nathan!” Derek hailed his neighbour’s young boy.

Nathan had been riding his bike around the cul-de-sac, watching Derek dig his hole in the farmer’s paddock. The spoil heap was piling up around Derek, and his metal detector was still buzzing like a mosquito.

Nathan squeezed his brakes to a halt. “What you doing down there?”

Derek was now four feet down and still hadn’t found whatever was making the metal detector beep. Something big, possibly; something valuable, potentially.

“I’m doing important archaeology,” Derek replied.

“Would you mind knocking on the door of my house? Debbie will be at home. Ask her if you can have a can of pop for Derek. She’ll know what you mean.”

“Are you allowed to dig that hole?” The boy didn’t move.

“Yes, I’ve asked permission.”

Nathan rang his bell gaily. “I like digging,” he said nally.

“Good for you. If you fetch me a drink, I’ll let you use my spade.”

The boy narrowed his eyes. “Am I allowed to play with your buzzy machine?”

“Certainly not. This is a sensitive piece of equipment, not a toy.”

The very idea, Derek thought.

Debbie had grumbled for a week about how much he’d spent on his metal detector, but it would pay for itself in no time; where there’s muck there’s brass, as his father always said.

Nathan looked at the metal detector with renewed admiration. “Can I just hold it?”

“No, you can’t.”

“But didn’t you say you were thirsty?” The child was a erce negotiator.

“Alright,” Derek relented, “but only for one minute.”

Nathan scrambled down into the hole, kicking dirt everywhere.

“You switch it on here,” Derek demonstrated.

“Then you point it at the ground and listen for the beep.”

The boy put his hands around the handle while Derek watched anxiously. He aimed it at the ground and the detector chirped urgently.

“What’s it doing?” Nathan asked in awe.

“It’s telling us there’s something metal down below.”

“What sort of something?”

“Could be anything. A bronze helmet, a Viking hoard, a sword. Or it could even be something very small like a nail.”

“Could it be a bike?” Nathan swung the detector up in the air, nearly taking Derek’s cap off. “Or even my toenails?” He swung it back at his feet.

“Not toenails, no.”

Derek was unable to wrestle the equipment from the child’s erce grip.

“It wouldn’t work on th hem.”

“Y You just said nails could make it beep.”

Derek wondered what on earth they were teaching kids at school these days. “Nails you hammer, but not toenails. They’re made of something else.”

“Like what?” the boy asked earnestly.

“I’m not sure,” Derek confessed.

“What about yours?” He aimed it at Derek’s toes and the detector squealed louder than ever.

“Your nails are made out of metal, listen.” He did it again.

“That’s not my nails.” Derek slumped, realising he’d wasted a whole morning and now had a very big hole to ll in. “That’s my steel toe caps.”

Not going to lie, Cairns was not what I imagined: swimming only between steel nets (protection from saltwater crocodiles), lycra suits (protection from jellyfish), the tide ebbing so far you only see mud flats, crabs, hungry pelicans, and a great lightening show from a severe storm. The Great Barrier Reef lived up to expectations - within 2 minutes turtles, whitetip reef sharks cuttlefish, visibility around 15m and 28֯C water”. Summer Plans - article by The Pearson Centre For Young People

Activities are busily being planned for the summer for children and young people who attend the various activities at The Pearson Centre For Young People. Boys’ and Girls’ Brigade are meeting during term time and have activities planned on and off site for their members aged 5 – 18 years old. Boys meet on Mondays and girls on Thursday evenings.

Activities include cookery, crafts, sports and games with some trips having been planned offsite. There are spaces in all the different age groups. Our Development Programme involves after school activities together with a holiday club. Afterschool fun on Monday is athletics club, Tuesday we get busy in the kitchen with our cookery club or have a go at table tennis, Wednesday we continue to be sporty with an option of either football skills or dodgeball. These activities are all for children aged 5 to the end of school year 6. For young people in school year 6 to 11 we offer youth gym sessions on Thursdays and have a senior cookery club on Fridays for those in school years 5 to 9. Holiday clubs are open to those aged 6 to end of school year 8, operating Monday to Friday during school holidays. Proposal To Give Tenants The Right To Have A Pet

Long Eaton-based pet charity AdvoCATS has welcomed the news that the Government is to change the law to allow tenants to keep pets. Housing Secretary Michael Gove announced in a long-awaited Renting Reform White Paper, that the Government is to change the law to prevent landlords having blanket bans on pets. “We are thrilled to see that one of the key proposals from our Heads for Tails! campaign, to allow a landlord to stipulate pet damage insurance is held, has been adopted,” commented AdvCATS co-founder Jennifer Berezai. “We would like to thank all the organisations who have thrown their weight behind our campaign, over 40 in total - too many to mention, but notably the National Residential Landlords Association (NRLA), Propertymark, Property Redress Scheme, National Office for Animal Health (NOAH), International Cat Care, Society for Companion Animal Studies (SCAS) and Focus on Animal Law (FOAL). “In addition, all our cross party political supporters who helped to advance the issue up the government's agenda, in particular the late Sir David Amess, an early supporter of the Heads for Tails! campaign, who would have been so very pleased to see this major step forward in appreciating the value of companion animals. “We grabbed our chance ‘with both paws’, we talked, the Government listened and now thousands of tenants will be able to keep pets that they have, and/or adopt anew. Literacy Volunteers Needed!

Literacy Volunteers are needed to help primary school children with their reading and communication skills. Volunteers read and play word games with selected children on a one-to-one basis outside of the classroom, to give them confidence, help them enjoy reading and open doors for life-long achievement. Volunteers need to be able to commit to visiting a local school on the same morning or afternoon each week (for at least a year) and your own transport would be an advantage but is not essential. A perfect warming dessert to make the most of fresh cherries. You could use any berries for this cobbler.

Fruit • 500g mixed berries or pitted cherries • 1 tsp cornour • 1 tbsp caster sugar

Method

Cobbler • 125g gluten-free self-raising our • 60g ground almonds • ½ tsp baking powder • ¼ tsp bicarbonate of soda • Pinch of salt • 60g dairy-free spread • 4 tbsp non-dairy milk or soy yoghurt

3. Place the our, ground almonds, baking powder, soda and salt in a separate bowl. Mix well. Rub in the dairy-free spread to form crumbs then stir in enough dairy-free milk or soy yoghurt to form a soft dough.

1. Preheat the oven to 180C / 160C fan / gas mark 4.

2. Place the fruit in a large bowl with the cornour and sugar.

Toss to coat thoroughly.

4. Put the fruit in a baking dish. Take spoonfuls of the dough and drop on top of the fruit.

5. Bake in the oven for 30 minutes until golden and bubbling.

Local Celebrations For Armed Forces Day

The Mayor of the Borough of Broxtowe, Councillor David Grindell, raised a specially commissioned Armed Forces Day Flag in The Square, Beeston in June to mark a week of events being held across the country. Colonel Gavin Hatcher OBE from 170 (Infrastructure Support) Engineer Group Royal Engineers joined Councillor Grindell to raise the flag and addressed representatives from the Royal British Legion and uniformed organisations to show our support and recognise the contributions of all those who serve or have served in Her Majesty’s Armed Forces. “I’m glad that we can have our usual flag raising ceremony in Beeston Square this year. Flying this flag is our way of showing support and gratitude for all the Armed Forces do,” said Councillor David Grindell. The Armed Forces Service personnel has made personal sacrifices to protect the UK and its interests both overseas and on home soil, I would like to thank all of them for working tirelessly to defend the Country and protecting our lives no matter what we are facing.”

What To Do With Compostable Wrappers

You may have spotted that some food items and even greetings cards or magazines that were previously wrapped in plastic now have compostable wrappers. These are often made from potato or corn starch. Whilst this is a great move away from plastic, unfortunately, there is confusion on what to actually do with the compostable wrapper - especially as this varies within councils across the UK and the messaging on the wrapper isn't clear. Here is a quick guide to help.

Do - Mix it in with your home compost - potato or corn starch will compost nicely, if you don’t have a compost heap, put it in your general waste bin.

Don’t - Put it into your garden waste bin or kerbside recycling bin – the council cannot recycle this wrapper or compost it.
