Hello again everyone, Here we are at the beginning of September, and Autumn is almost here. I hope you all enjoyed the Summer break.

I did get some time to sit in the garden with my feet up and read a book, but I didn't get through half of the tasks I’d mentally set for myself. Sometimes you just have to go with the flow!

The first of September is a very special date for me - it’s the anniversary of the beginning of my magazine business.

In 2006, I’d promised myself I would make a decision over the Summer about whether to start a magazine for Carryduff. By 31st August I was still dithering. Would it work or not? I wasn’t sure.

I remember clearly being in work on 1st September - my daughter’s first day in ‘big’ school. I thought, “I’ll just do it!

If I don't try, I’ll never know.” In 6 weeks, the November 2006 issue was off to print. 10 years on, I think it was the best decision I never made!

As if buying new clothes, bags and accessories wasn’t expensive enough, the back to school period also means buying gadgets - but which ones will actually benefit your child when they head to school, college or university? The right gadgets really do make a difference, but don’t rush to spend more money than you need to.

Some form of computer is essential, especially for students away from home: it’s not just a tool for learning, but for communicating, music, movies and TV too. The key question today is whether a laptop or a tablet is better. Both cost around the same - unless you’re going for an Apple laptop, you can get a very good laptop for less than £400, which is around the same price as an iPad - but it’s important to check whether your child’s school, college or university has specific requirements. For example, some statistical software requires Windows, and while you can make Windows work on a Mac that involves extra expense - and it isn’t an option at all on an iPad. If you’re buying software, look for student versions: programs such as Microsoft Office come in student editions that cost a fraction of the normal price.

Katherine Sorrell outlines how you can employ paint to colour your home beautiful.

Most of us are cautious about using colour, so how can we boost our colour confidence? Easy: arm yourself with a little knowledge and make the effort to experiment. You can always repaint if you don’t like the results.

Start by leafing through as many interiors books and magazines as possible. A wealth of effort and experience has gone into producing room sets that work for all kinds of tastes. And, all the leading paint manufacturers produce colour cards, brochures that demonstrate how different shades can be put together, and interactive free apps: try Dulux’s Visualizer or Crown’s MyRoomPainter, for example.

Consider the sizes of your rooms: pale colours, because they contain a lot of white, seem to recede, enhancing a feeling of spaciousness, while darker colours absorb light and therefore appear more enclosing.

Similarly, ‘cool’ colours such as blue and green are more distancing than ‘warm’ colours such as red and yellow. This is why people tend to use paler, cooler colours in small rooms, and white on low ceilings, reserving bolder or darker colours for large, bright rooms. But break the rules if you wish: perhaps use a dark, warm colour to make a small room feel welcoming and intimate. For practicality, paint those parts of the house that show the dirt (such as a busy hallway) in a darkish shade, and consider a high-gloss, washable surface finish, too.

A simple, one-colour scheme is relatively easy to get right – provided you choose the right colour.

Combining two or more can be more challenging, but hugely rewarding.

Once you have narrowed down your choices and tried the apps, create a mood board of magazine cuttings and swatches, layering colours and textures to build a balanced palette.

Buy tester pots of paints and get a feel for the colours by painting and sticking A4-sized pieces of paper to the walls you’re planning to paint, and see what they look like as the light changes through the day. Also, paint the inside of a cardboard box to see how the colour changes as the walls reflect off each other.

If you don’t want a classic colour palette, look out for fashion-forward hues. Dulux’s colour of the year is Cherished Gold, an earthy metallic that works well with both fresh pastels and rich jewel tones, while Pantone’s colours of the year are

Rose Quartz and a soft blue called Serenity. Crown’s autumn/winter palette is based around three looks: Out of the Dark, with black and charcoal plus bright yellow, pink and orange dashes; Skyscapes, shades of blue with grey and chalky neutrals; and Faded Berries, deep berry tones with mossy and grassy greens.

So, research, find your favourite style and either follow fashion or go your own way - colour possibilities are endless.

NATURAL PAINTS Natural paints are generally made using combinations of ingredients such as linseed oil, lime, turpentine, citrus oil, chalk and earth and mineral pigments. They allow walls to breathe, so moisture is not trapped beneath - useful if your house is slightly damp - and they don’t become statically charged, thus reducing the build-up of dust on painted surfaces (good for allergy sufferers). Because they are more flexible, they tend not to crack or flake. They use either fully renewable raw materials or those that are in plentiful supply, and energy waste during manufacture is kept to a minimum.

Manufacturers claim they are just as effective as conventional paints – if not more so – and, what’s more, they smell nice! Brands include Earthborn, Lakeland, Auro, Nutshell, Aglaia, Pots of Paint and Eico.

• 1.6kg floury potatoes, peeled and cut into chunks • 750g cod fillet • 1L milk • 1 bay leaf • Few black peppercorns • 75g butter • 50g plain flour • 3 tbsp freshly chopped parsley • 175g frozen peas, thawed • 225g large peeled prawns, thawed if frozen • 15ml olive oil • Sprig of fresh parsley, to garnish

You can use any white fish fillet for this pie - haddock or coley will work just as well. Alternatively, replace half the cod with salmon fillet or smoked haddock, if liked.

Cook the potatoes in a large pan of boiling, lightly salted water for 15-20 minutes until tender.

Meanwhile, place the cod in a large frying pan and pour over the milk. Add the bay leaf and peppercorns and bring to the boil. Simmer for 5 minutes then remove from the heat. Using a slotted spoon, remove the cod from the pan and set aside. Strain the milk into a large heatproof jug.

Melt 50g of the butter in a medium saucepan. Stir in the flour and cook for 1 minute. Gradually whisk in 850ml of the milk. Bring to the boil, stirring all the time, then simmer for 3-4 minutes until you have a smooth, thick sauce.

Preheat the oven to 200C, fan 180C, Gas 6. Flake the fish, discarding any skin and bones, and stir into the sauce with the parsley, peas and prawns. Season with salt and freshly ground black pepper to taste. Transfer the mixture to a deep ovenproof dish.

Mash the potatoes with the rest of the butter and milk and season to taste. Spoon the mash over the fish mixture to cover. Drizzle over the olive oil and bake in the preheated oven for 25-30 minutes until golden and bubbling. Serve garnished with a sprig of parsley.

Nature Focus In another of a new series of articles about our local environment, Helen Long writes about her observations of nature a bit further afield, outside Carryduff. This month Helen visits Armagh....

Imagine someone from Carryduff taking a trip to the ecclesiastical capital of Ireland and not visiting either of its cathedrals! And furthermore, imagine that same person admiring instead the interior of a Presbyterian Church! This was me one day last summer. Having set out on a ‘pilgrimage’ to the pre-Christian Navan Fort, I got lost and ended up on the Mall, right beside this beautiful kirk. I may well have been lost; but, to paraphrase the old hymn, I soon was found! Not only did I have the privilege of exploring a beautiful church, but I also received great directions to Navan!

There is no doubting that Armagh is a beautiful city; but alas, one I don’t really know very well. I ate my picnic on a seat in the Mall, from where, through the trees, I Last Post In Charge of the Young Brigade could admire the Georgian houses with their elegant fanlit doors. Then I studied the adjacent memorial to the dead of the Boer War: a shockingly high number for a small community like this, where even the Drummer Boy was among the fallen. Only a few paces away, my reflective mood was further deepened by a huge iron cannon dating from an even earlier conflict (Crimea, c 1850: think ‘Charge of the Light Brigade’).

Navan Fort is the Emain Macha of Cuchulainn—home of the Hound of Ulster—and the Red Branch Knights, so on arrival there I was back in a time long before the existence of either cannons or Georgian fanlights! Those were the days when cattle were the main currency! Strangely, what I sensed in that ancient seat of kings and warriors was an overwhelming ambience of tranquillity. It is a real Chez Cuchulainn? haven for both humans and wildlife: I La Paix (peace) heard birds flitting and calling in hedges all around; and I even caught a fleeting glimpse of a speeding dragonfly! Magnificent! The place is very well equipped for children of all ages, and I met many happy toddlers during my visit. (And the café’s caramel squares have to be tasted to be believed!)

Ulster’s kings and heroes are long gone; but have their descendants inherited a better world? Perhaps I should leave the last word to the inscription in four languages on a white pole in a quiet glade in the Centre: ‘Let peace reign over all the earth.’

Thomas and Zak are 16 year old twins and they have represented Northern Ireland, Ulster and Ireland previously. Sophie is 10 years old and has also played for N Ireland, Ulster and Ireland. She is currently number 1 in Ulster and number 2 in Ireland at u13s level, playing well above her young age. Sophie represented Ireland at the Euro minis championships in Strasbourg in August.

This competition is for the top girls and boys from all over Europe at under 13 level.

MILLENNIUM INTEGRATED PRIMARY SCHOOL Rabeekah O'Connor, a P5 pupil at Millennium IPS, had been making and selling 'Pom-Pom Pets' to the children at school last term.

She and her mum worked hard every night to create each individual pet. Rabeekah has managed to raise the grand total of £542 which she donated to the Cancer Fund for Children NI. We are immensely proud of Rabeekah for her efforts.

Small Grant Programme Lisburn & Castlereagh Policing and Community Safety Partnership (PCSP) invites applications for consideration from interested constituted Community Groups, Neighbourhood Watch Schemes and Community Police Liaison Committees for small grants between £500 and £5000 to be spent in the current financial year ending 28 February 2017.

Applications can be made under one of the following themes: 

Objective 1 – Reducing anti-social behaviour, addressing the effects of drugs and alcohol as a contributing factor in crime and anti-social behaviour, increase reporting of Domestic Abuse incidents and provide support to the victims, increase confidence in policing;



Objective 2 – Reduce the fear of crime, especially vulnerable groups including addressing hate crime, road safety, reduce burglaries, business and retail crime.

TINYLIFE Do you have a spare few hours every week to help a local family cope with the stress of caring for a premature or sick baby?

Based in Carryduff, TinyLife is Northern Ireland's premature and sick baby charity. The charity provides a wide range of practical and emotional support services to families right across the province who are faced with the heartbreaking reality of premature birth or sickness at birth.

Many of the babies we support are born as early as 24 weeks and weigh as little as 1lb. These babies often spend prolonged time in neonatal care and some have prolonged health complications. Bringing home a premature or sick baby in much more challenging than bringing home a full term infant.

With this in mind, TinyLife offer a hospital to home support service. The service makes the first crucial years a little less daunting for both parents and baby/babies especially when they feel like they have nowhere else to turn. In fact, many parents call the service 'their lifetime'.

TinyLife can offer parents the support of a fully trained volunteer who will come to the home for up to 4 hours each week and help them to feed/bath their baby/babies, attend hospital appointments or simply be a listening ear. Both the charity and the families rely heavily on the generosity of the volunteers, who give of their time freely to help others.

Local TinyLife volunteer and mum of 2, Carol understands the value of her role. 'I was looking for a volunteering opportunity for a worthwhile cause to fill the spare time I had now that my children were of school age. As a mum myself, I felt that TinyLife was a particularly good fit. I undersand the challenges that parents of small children face on a daily basis and I know that an extra pair of hands always comes in useful'.

TinyLife provides indepth training for volunteers, covering topics such as child protection training and volunteering with families of premature babies as well as ongoing support provided by the Family Support team who work within the 7 neonatal units across Northern Ireland.

Carol said, 'I have been supporting 2 families, both with very different needs, since last year. Visits vary from week to week, one week I might be helping mum to feed her baby then the next I might be attending hospital appointments'.

Helen Marks is the family support officer who looks after families located in the Belfast Trust area. She said, 'TinyLife could not operate this unique service without the help of our volunteers and I know firsthand that the families really value the contribution made to their lives by our volunteers. But as more and more premature and sick babies are born, the charity desperately needs more volunteers. No experience is necessary and duties can vary between families; some mums simply want a listening ear whilst others need a more hands on approach, perhaps help attending hospital appointments or in the case of twins, feeding one baby whilst mum changes or feeds the other'.

Carol added, 'Volunteering for TinyLife is a very rewarding experience, I really enjoy visiting my families every week and I know that Helen is only a phone call away should I need support too. Knowing that I am making a difference, no matter how small, to someone in need makes it all the more worthwhile'.

POLICE ADVICE - DOMESTIC ABUSE A new campaign was launched in June by the Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI) and Policing and Community Safety Partnerships (PCSPs) to encourage people to report incidents of domestic abuse. The key message of the campaign ‘If you feel like you’re walking on eggshells that’s domestic abuse’ is designed to encourage the reporting of incidents and make victims aware that they can take steps to stop it.

The police respond to an incident of Domestic Abuse every 19 minutes. While this is a shocking statistic there is a belief that a large number of domestic incidents are still going unreported.

Detective Chief Superintendent George Clarke, Head of the PSNI’s Public Protection Branch, said: “Between March 2015 and April 2016, there were 28,392 domestic abuse incidents reported to police, which is an increase of 105 incidents compared to the same period last year. We welcome the increase because we believe this shows confidence is increasing in the police. However; we know that incidents are still going unreported.

“Very often people who are being abused feel isolated, vulnerable and frightened and don’t know where to turn. Through the campaign we are encouraging all victims regardless of age, race, gender or sexuality to come forward and report the matter to the police. Speak out to stop it.

“It is our job to keep people safe. Our role is about prevention, protection and prosecution – to prevent further violence, to protect the victim, children and other vulnerable people and to facilitate the prosecution of offenders. We work closely with our partners, statutory and voluntary, to ensure the victims get the help they deserve, to highlight the issue of Domestic Abuse and to explore ways in which we can keep communities safer.”

As part of awareness raising the Police Service alongside the local PCSPs are supporting initiatives to encourage victims to report this heinous crime.

There are dedicated domestic abuse officers across Northern Ireland to ensure that all domestic abuse crimes are investigated, as well as providing support and information to victims about police procedures and legal proceedings.

Domestic abuse cannot of course be dealt with solely by the police and they will continue to work with the PCSP and other key stakeholders to highlight the issue of domestic abuse and explore together ways in which we can make communities safer.

A 24-hour Domestic and Sexual Helpline is available to anyone who has concerns about domestic or sexual violence, now or in the past on 0808 802 1414.

The PCSP and the Police should strongly encourage anyone suffering from domestic abuse to contact their local police on the non-emergency 101 or in an emergency always call 999.

BARRACK STREET BAND (CORK) AND ORMEAU CONCERT BAND Barrack Street Intermediate Band from Cork visited Belfast for the first time in August. A cross community workshop was held for both bands in St Dorotheas Church Halls, off Gilnahirk Road.

Initially the bands split into brass and reed, using separate rooms. Ms Shauna McCullough (conductor Barrack Street Band) taking the brass and Mr Gary Shields (conductor Ormeau Concert Band) taking the reeds. Later the sections combined to form a band of approximately 55 players. A concert followed to which the public were invited. The music was thoroughly enjoyed by both players and public. At the conclusion of the concert the visitors presented a beautifully engraved crystal plaque to the chairman of Ormeau - Mr Bill Green.

This was an extremely successful cross community venture and we all hope it or similar can be repeated. We are grateful to all who took part in the organising of the event and to the church secretary, Deborah, whose support was very much appreciated. During their 4-day visit, they also played in public at Belfast City Hall, Titanic Quarter and Duncairn Community Festival.

The Ormeau Concert Band have vacancies in all sections, both brass and reed.
