On page 9 you’ll see a page of detail about a proposed residential development for 113 new homes off the Ballynahinch Road in Carryduff. If you’re affected or feel strongly, you can let them know what you think. All the contact details are there at the bottom of p9. As I was finishing off this issue, another proposed development leaflet document arrived through my letterbox. Perhaps you received one too? - about a proposed water sports centre at Knockbracken Reservoir. By the time you get this issue delivered, the public exhibition of the plans at the Ivanhoe will be over, but there’s still time to pass on your feedback. When it comes to looking after your hair or getting rid of unwanted hair, there’s no shortage of options - and no wonder, because the beauty market is worth huge sums of money. So it’s hardly surprising to see the likes of Dyson joining the party, albeit with a hairdryer that costs £299. The reviews are excellent, but if you’re anything like us you’re probably hoping to spend something more like £29 on a hairdryer. My seventeen year-old daughter has just passed her driving test, so I was proud to see her set out on her first solo journey. For my peace of mind I would like her to take some advanced driving lessons (she’s learned to pass the driving test, now she needs to learn to drive) but pressure from Dad is not the way to introduce such a thing: she has to have her own “why” in order to want to take them. Hopefully she will soon. But that’s for the future.

Luckily they had made it to the hospital car park, so staff assisted and both mother and baby were fine. Time passed and the Whitelaws kept their Astra as the family runabout. It’s over 19 years old now (and a bit creaky says Freya) but, about to take her driving test, Mum and Dad have passed it on to their daughter as her first car. I’m sure she will pass the driving test with ease and, hopefully, go on to increase her skills behind the wheel. After all, she has her “why” in the history of the car she is driving: she started her life in the back seat so would want to have a long and safe one in the front. By Iain Betson

Joint pain can cause severe mobility problems that take away your pet’s joy for life, but it’s not just older animals that suffer in this way. Genetic issues such as hip or elbow dysplasia in dogs, or an old injury, increase the risk of arthritis.

What to look out for It’s fairly easy to spot the signs of arthritis in dogs, simply because they are in your company more than a rabbit or a cat, for example. These are some of the indicators to watch out for: • Stiffness when your dog gets up / after a walk. • They walk with a limp, even if only for a few minutes. • Your cat’s reluctant to jump on your knee.

• Rabbits - less inclined to run around the cage. It can be particularly difficult to notice the signs of arthritis in a rabbit, as one of the ways they survive in the wild is to move less when they’re injured, so as not to appear vulnerable. Is there anything you can do to prevent joint problems in your pet? As far as puppies are concerned, it’s important not to over-exercise them while their bodies are still developing. Being overweight will also have a huge impact on your pet’s joints, so watching food intake is a key factor. The vet may prescribe an anti-inflammatory if your pet has severe joint pain, or glucosamine and chondroitin, as these are supplements known to help with mobility. By Ann Haldon

breast cancer risk. Previous breast cancer doubles the risk, and pushes it even higher if you were diagnosed before age 40.

Around 7,300 UK women are diagnosed with ovarian cancer annually and less than half are alive 5 years later. Yet early diagnosis can increase 5-year survival to 90%. March is Ovarian Cancer Awareness Month. Reducing Risk: Taking the contraceptive pill, having children and breastfeeding are all proven to reduce ovarian cancer risk. TYPES OF OVARIAN CANCER About 90% of ovarian tumours are epithelial ovarian cancer, starting in the layer covering the ovary. Around 1 to 2% of ovarian cancers are germ cell cancers, formed in the ovary’s egg making cells. Rare stromal tumours and sarcomas can also affect the ovary and a few ovarian cancers are primary peritoneal carcinomas, which develop in the membrane around abdominal organs. Slow-growing borderline ovarian tumours do not grow into the stroma (supportive tissue of the ovary). RISK FACTORS Increasing age: Most sufferers are post-menopause. Faulty genes: 5 to 15% of ovarian cancers are thought to be caused by an inherited faulty gene, including BRCA1 and BRCA2, which also increase

Infertility may increase risk, but fertility treatments are no longer believed to do so. There may be an increased risk of borderline ovarian tumours in infertile women treated with IVF. Hormone replacement therapy (HRT) is linked to less than 1% of ovarian cancers. Being overweight or tall: A BMI of 28 or over increases risk in premenopausal women but has no effect on risk in postmenopausal women. Taller women also have a higher risk. Endometriosis Using talcum powder between your legs is thought to increase ovarian cancer risk due to its irritant effect. Smoking: The longer you’ve smoked, the greater the risk increase. SYMPTOMS Ovarian cancer symptoms aren’t always easy to identify and may be mistaken for IBS (Irritable Bowel Syndrome) or PMS (Premenstrual Syndrome) symptoms in the early stages. However, if symptoms are new, severe, frequent or persistent (occurring most days for three weeks or more), you should see your GP immediately, although often, a less serious condition is to blame. Look out for: • Abdominal swelling and persistent bloating.

• Persistent pelvic and abdominal pain. • Difficulty eating, nausea and feeling full unusually quickly. • Back pain. • Needing to urinate more frequently. • Pain during sex. Remember that ovarian cancer is rare in women under 40, but that you should be particularly cautious if you are over 50 or have a family history of breast or ovarian cancer. DIAGNOSIS Your GP may do some tests themselves or refer you straight to a specialist. You will be examined externally and internally to check for any lumps or swelling and will then have an abdominal or transvaginal ultrasound scan. They’ll also do a blood test for CA125, a protein that’s elevated in half of women with early stage ovarian cancer and 90% of women with advanced ovarian cancer (although other pelvic conditions and pregnancy can cause elevated levels too). They may also order a CT or MRI scan. However, sometimes it’s impossible to diagnose ovarian cancer definitively without surgery. TREATMENT Most women with ovarian cancer will require surgery. If diagnosed early, you may only need the affected ovary and fallopian tube removed. More advanced cancers may need more extensive surgery, plus chemotherapy before and after, to treat cancerous cells and reduce reoccurrence risk.

• 200g Thai jasmine rice

• 1 tbsp sunflower oil • 1 onion, peeled and thinly sliced • 2 tbsp Thai green curry paste • 1 large red pepper, deseeded and thinly sliced

Cook the rice in a large pan of boiling, lightly salted water for about 15 minutes until tender, or follow the packet instructions. Meanwhile, heat the oil in a large frying pan over a medium heat and fry the onion for 5 minutes. Stir in the curry paste and cook for 1 minute until fragrant. Stir in the pepper and courgette and fry for a further minute.

• 1 large courgette, sliced • 450g chicken breast fillets, cut into chunks • 400ml can coconut milk • 1 tbsp soy sauce • 1 tbsp fish sauce • Squeeze of lime juice • 2 tsp nigella seeds

Add the chicken and cook for 3-4 minutes until no longer pink, stirring all the time. Pour in the coconut milk and simmer gently for 10 minutes until the chicken is cooked. Stir in the soy and fish sauces and lime juice. Drain the rice and use a small heatproof cup or bowl to make four mounds of rice on warmed serving plates. Sprinkle the nigella seeds on top and spoon the curry on the side.

Add a handful of freshly chopped coriander leaves to the curry at the end of cooking time, if liked. Or for a spicier flavour, garnish with shredded red chilli pepper.

Nature Focus In another of a new series of articles about our local environment, Helen Long writes about her observations of nature a bit further afield, outside Carryduff. This month Helen visits Rowallane.... It’s only about six miles south of Carryduff, but how many of us have paid a visit to Rowallane Garden in the past year? It is a National Trust property, and the usual charges apply, but if you enjoy walking in pleasant off-road parkland, then it’s very well worth it! The grounds are at their most spectacular in the springtime, when the rhododendrons are in full bloom. Some of them not only look stunning, but have a delicious scent as well! A veritable feast for the senses! You can take as long or as short a walk as you like, and dogs are permitted, as long as they’re kept on a lead. If you walk down through the Spring Ground in March or April, you will be dazzled by the spectacular array of daffodils and narcissi that sweep along the sloping sward! I have heard and seen jays calling in this area, so you might want to keep a look-out for them! Nearby is one of my favourite areas: the enclosed ‘Old Wood’. Even the little gate by which you enter looks invitingly rustic, like something out of a fairy tale. And once inside, it’s a different world: the cares of the 21st century drift away as the quiet arbour envelops and welcomes you. Naturally it’s a haven for all kinds of birdlife! I always get the sense that the distant past is all around me in that place, in an uplifting and comforting way.

A little further along is another of my favourites, the Rock Garden. True to its name, there are real outcrops of Rowallane rock here, imaginatively inter-planted with all manner of shrubs, bulbs and flowers. There is also a little pond nearby, which is a great place to spot tadpoles! Then there are the wonderful little tree-creepers. These are tiny birds that live up to their name by creeping up the rough bark of old trees. I spotted one on a tree near the entrance, but you might see one anywhere, if they weren’t so very well camouflaged! With their little downward-curving beaks they are experts at pulling insects out of the crevices in the bark, as they work their way up. And on the subject of food, if you’re in need of refreshment after wandering through verdurous glooms and winding mossy ways, then look no further My Little Ted (Leafcreeper!) than Rowallane’s lovely bright, spacious Treecreeper café! Bon appetit!

P4/5 went on a school trip to the Ulster Museum, Belfast. As part of our topic Ancient Egypt we took part in an Egyptian workshop. We got to look at real Egyptian artifacts and investigate what it would have been like to be a child in Egyptian times. The highlight of our trip was to see Takabuti, a Egyptian mummy from the 7th century and to find out more about the mummification process. Harry and Adam are pictured getting up close to some Egyptian treasure (below left) and Matthew tries out an Egyptian pillow made of wood!! (below)

The highlight of our school year for many of our pupils is ‘Grandparents’ Day!’ This year we celebrated ‘Grandparents’ Day’ on Friday 3rd February. Refreshments were served in the school canteen and were welcomed by all the grandparents as many had travelled from far distances. Afterwards grandparents were invited to visit their grandchildren in their classrooms and have a walk around the school. They were given an opportunity to see and participate in many fun-filled activities such as art, structured play, Early Man workshops as well as lots of singing. Lots of stories were exchanged about school in the ‘olden days’ and how it has since changed. Everyone had a wonderful time and we look forward to seeing our grandparents again next year.

ST JOSEPH’S PRIMARY SCHOOL were awarded 2nd place in the Down and Connor Art and Media Competition. The school had to design an art piece (pictured right) to reflect the ethos of our school. Three pupils attended an award ceremony with Mrs Gwynne on Tuesday 31st January to receive their award from Bishop Noel Treanor (below). Congratulations to the 11 Primary 7 pupils who represented the school at Lisburn and Castlereagh Council’s P7 Sports Hall Athletics competition. 5 boys and 6 girls represented St Joseph’s in a variety of disciplines such as chest push, speed bounce, standing jump and relays. They performed superbly well in a very competitive event. Particular congratulations to the girls’ team who won their Sprint Relay. Well done everyone! 40

LITTLE DIPPERS’ SWIMMING CLUB (formerly at Robinson Centre) We are a family swimming club where children can learn to swim in a relaxed friendly and well supervised environment.
