Welcome

to your March / April magazine

Contents

Hello again everyone,

Articles: 6 Technology

It’s going to be a busy few weeks - there’s Pancake Tuesday on 28th February, St Patrick’s Day on 17th March, Mother’s Day on 26th March and Easter Sunday on 16th April. Any days off are welcomed, of course, but I’m particularly looking forward to my children coming home for a few days over Easter (and to lots of chocolate!)

Deadline for adverts for the May/June BT8 Focus: Friday 14th April

Comic Relief is back too - on BBC1 on Friday 24th March. Definitely something to look forward to. (Red noses available from Sainsbury’s, and other merchandise from the comic relief website www.shop.rednoseday.com). It’s just been announced that the cast of Love Actually are going to reunite 14 years later specially for red nose day. Genius idea! And of course, we have the start of Spring - marked officially by the clocks springing forward one hour at 1am on Sunday 26th March, which of course is Mother’s Day. (Well, that makes it easier to remember!) Until next time!

Gadgets for grooming, cutting, styling or removing, whatever your gender

When it comes to looking after your hair or getting rid of unwanted hair, there’s no shortage of options - and no wonder, because the beauty market is worth huge sums of money. So it’s hardly surprising to see the likes of Dyson joining the party, albeit with a hairdryer that costs £299. The reviews are excellent, but if you’re anything like us you’re probably hoping to spend something more like £29 on a hairdryer. If that’s the case, keep an eye out for Tourmaline dryers from the usual suspects: it’s a kind of ceramic that enables hair dryers to deliver powerful airflow without leaving your hair looking like it’s been through the tumble dryer.

pop some water in, wait 60 seconds and get fabulous, not frizzy, results. The Flexibrush was a cult classic in the 1990s, and Remington says it brought it back because it was getting 50 calls a week from people wanting to buy one.

One of the current trends in hair styling is steam. Stylers such as the Remington CB4N Flexibrush can be used without it, or you can

There are lots of gadgets for hair removal too, from the usual epilators and shavers to more high-tech options such as IPL hair removal. IPL uses pulses of light to get rid of unwanted hair, and while it works brilliantly we’ve got bad news for anyone with ginger or light blonde hair, or very dark skin: IPL only works on darker hair colours on lighter skin tones. Prices aren’t as frightening as they used to be - for example, the Another great idea comes from £350 Philips Lumea SC2004/11 late-night TV advertiser JML. example, the Remington i-Light Pro is £299 and the Philips Lumea for Men is £350 - but they do work, provided you don’t have ginger or light blond hair. A big advantage for men is that unlike other hair removal methods, IPL doesn’t have stubbly regrowth, irritate your skin or lead to ingrowing hairs. There are plenty of grooming gadgets for men too. Facebook is full of ads for innovative razors and gadgets such as the £19 RazorPit Blade Sharpener. For hair removal elsewhere there’s no shortage of electric groomers, shavers and combined head and body trimmers, but shop around: recommended retail prices can be hilariously high, but retailers often sell the kits at huge discounts. That applies to women too: beauty gadgets vary wildly in price between retailers. It’s worth picking a favourite and using a comparison site such as pricespy.co.uk to make sure that looking good won’t be bad for your bank balance.

There is nothing better than a living boundary around or within your garden, and it is difficult to beat a hedge. Hedges can be smart or informal, neat and compact or thicker and sturdier, evergreen or deciduous and can even have pretty flowers - and now is an ideal time to plant a new hedge. First, prepare the area by forking the soil over thoroughly and remove large stones, debris and pernicious weeds. This also helps to break up any compaction and to aerate the soil, making it a better place for plant roots. You should fork in well-rotted garden compost, manure or proprietary compost if the soil is either very sandy and light or very heavy with clay, and at the same time incorporate a complete fertilizer. Don’t plant right up against an existing fence, as the plants won’t grow well. At this time of year you can create a hedge very effectively using ‘bare-root’ plants, but if you want to plant a hedge at any other time you will need container-grown plants. If using pot-grown plants, water them thoroughly and then carefully remove each plant from its pot. If the roots are tightly packed, tease them out firmly before

10

planting. If you’re using bareroot plants, plant them immediately. It is essential to plant and space the plants correctly, to both achieve the desired effect and ensure the plants establish well. Once out of the pot, position the plant in the prepared soil at the same depth as it was in the pot; for bare-root plants only the roots should be beneath the soil. Firm the soil around each so that it is in good contact with the roots. Hedging plants should generally be spaced about 30-45cm apart. For a thicker or denser hedge, plant two parallel rows, each with a 45cm spacing between the plants, but positioned so that the planting is staggered like bricks in a wall. Once the whole hedge is planted, water the soil thoroughly to help settle the soil around the roots and so allow the plants to establish. On windy sites or with larger plants use small, temporary stakes such as bamboo canes to stabilise the plants. Keep the hedge well watered, especially during dry or windy weather. The first 18 months is the most vital period. Some great hedging plants: • Yew - a formal, evergreen hedge. • Thuja - a stunning conifer

e: info@localfocusmags.co.uk

hedge for year round colour. • Beech - a deciduous plant that gives a good effect for much of the year. Both purple and green-leafed forms. • Hornbeam - great as a neatly clipped hedge, but more prone to mildew than beech. • Cypress – excellent if kept well clipped and cut back regularly. • Pyracantha - spiny evergreen with pretty creamy-white flowers and red-orange or yellow berries. • Privet - the classic town hedge. • Euonymus - evergreen, some variegated green and cream, others green and yellow. • Hawthorn - deciduous and potentially thorny, good for wildlife. • Blackthorn - deciduous and very thorny, with pretty white flowers followed by sloes – but can easily get too vigorous! My seventeen year-old daughter has just passed her driving test, so I was proud to see her set out on her first solo journey. For my peace of mind I would like her to take some advanced driving lessons (she’s learned to pass the driving test, now she needs to learn to drive) but pressure from Dad is not the way to introduce such a thing: she has to have her own “why” in order to want to take them. Hopefully she will soon. But that’s for the future. I relate this to you because of what caught my eye recently: it’s a light-hearted story concerning another similar aged driver.

rushing in their Vauxhall Astra to the maternity hospital. Except Freya wouldn’t wait and had to be delivered on the back seat of the car. Luckily they had made it to the hospital car park, so staff assisted and both mother and baby were fine. Time passed and the Whitelaws kept their Astra as the family runabout. It’s over 19 years old now (and a bit creaky says Freya) but, about to take her driving test, Mum and Dad have passed it on to their daughter as her first car. I’m sure she will pass the driving test with ease and, hopefully, go on to increase her skills behind the wheel. After all, she has her “why” in the history of the car she is driving: she started her life in the back seat so would want to have a long and safe one in the front.

More Health and Social Care foster carers needed in the Belfast area is the message from the Belfast HSC Trust as a regional radio campaign to appeal for more carers draws to a close. There is currently a shortage of foster carers across Northern Ireland to provide safe, stable and loving homes for vulnerable children and young people who are unable to live with their own families, sometimes as a result of family breakdown, relationship difficulties, neglect, abuse or parental ill health. However, as Beverley Ringland, Senior Social Worker Belfast Trust explains, the knock on effect of this general shortage can be felt locally. “There are areas within the Belfast Trust locality where more foster carers are needed in order to avoid moving children and young people away from their birth family, their school and their community when they are placed in foster care. Overall outcomes are better when children are able to maintain these links but the shortage of foster carers means that all too often children are moved to a different area.

The Trust is seeking to recruit people who are patient, understanding, compassionate and flexible. If you have the time and space in your life to care for a child or young person, Belfast HSC Trust would encourage you to get in touch on 028 9504 0057 or to visit www.adoptionandfostering.hscni.net to find out more. HSC foster carers receive financial allowances, 24-hour social work support and on-going training. Professional HSC foster carers receive an additional fee*. *Fee dependent on professional fostering schemes within each HSC Trust.

• 200g Thai jasmine rice

• 1 tbsp sunflower oil • 1 onion, peeled and thinly sliced • 2 tbsp Thai green curry paste • 1 large red pepper, deseeded and thinly sliced

Cook the rice in a large pan of boiling, lightly salted water for about 15 minutes until tender, or follow the packet instructions. Meanwhile, heat the oil in a large frying pan over a medium heat and fry the onion for 5 minutes. Stir in the curry paste and cook for 1 minute until fragrant. Stir in the pepper and courgette and fry for a further minute.

• 1 large courgette, sliced • 450g chicken breast fillets, cut into chunks • 400ml can coconut milk • 1 tbsp soy sauce • 1 tbsp fish sauce • Squeeze of lime juice • 2 tsp nigella seeds

Add the chicken and cook for 3-4 minutes until no longer pink, stirring all the time. Pour in the coconut milk and simmer gently for 10 minutes until the chicken is cooked. Stir in the soy and fish sauces and lime juice. Drain the rice and use a small heatproof cup or bowl to make four mounds of rice on warmed serving plates. Sprinkle the nigella seeds on top and spoon the curry on the side.

Add a handful of freshly chopped coriander leaves to the curry at the end of cooking time, if liked. Or for a spicier flavour, garnish with shredded red chilli pepper.

CHANGES TO YOUR LANDFILL BIN SERVICE From the 1st April 2017 food waste will no longer be accepted in landfill bins across the Lisburn & Castlereagh City Council area. The Council would like to advise its residents that all food waste must be placed in their brown bins for recycling. Residents are encouraged to start recycling food waste now if they don’t currently do so. In terms of recycling, ‘food waste’ is any food item that isn’t used or eaten for one reason or another. It includes common shopping list items such as: eggs and egg shells; fruit and vegetables; tea bags and coffee grounds; any bread or cakes; any cheese, rice or pasta; beans or meat including any bones. The Council has introduced measures to ensure that all food waste in its area will be recycled by composting and not landfilled. There has been a good increase in the amount of compostable waste collected from households and schools, but this is a good opportunity for everyone to reduce landfill waste. All the food and garden waste collected through the brown bin service is composted at a local reprocessing site providing a high quality compost and providing local employment.

What do I need to do? Use your free kitchen starter kit – your kitchen caddy and biodegradable caddy liners to store your food waste before placing into your brown bin. This makes it simple, clean and easy to recycle all your food waste. Kitchen caddies can be obtained from one of the locations detailed on www.lisburncastlereagh.gov.uk/ foodandgardenwaste Brown bins are emptied fortnightly so please be sure to leave your bin out each collection day. For more information on recycling or bin collections please refer to your collection calendar, visit www.lisburncastlereagh.gov.uk or call our recycling line on 028 9250 9453. Bogus Callers Before opening your front door to any caller, make sure your back door and any accessible windows are secure. Put your door chain on. (If you don’t have one we recommend you get one). If the person claims to represent a business or organisation, ask them for ID and check it carefully (still with the door chain on). Genuine tradesmen should carry a photographic identification card and won't mind showing it to you. The QUICK CHECK scheme can be used to check the identity of callers. Call Freephone 0800 013 22 90 and an operator can quickly check with a range of service providers that the person at the door is a genuine representative.

The highlight of our school year for many of our pupils is ‘Grandparents’ Day!’ This year we celebrated ‘Grandparents’ Day’ on Friday 3rd February. Refreshments were served in the school canteen and were welcomed by all the grandparents as many had travelled from far distances. Afterwards grandparents were invited to visit their grandchildren in their classrooms and have a walk around the school. They were given an opportunity to see and participate in many fun-filled activities such as art, structured play, Early Man workshops as well as lots of singing. Lots of stories were exchanged about school in the ‘olden days’ and how it has since changed. Everyone had a wonderful time and we look forward to seeing them again next year.

HEART RESEARCH 50 YEAR ANNIVERSARY Help mark Heart Research UK’s 50th anniversary this year and join them in taking up a 50 Day Challenge. They are calling for willing members of the public to either Give Up or Take Up something for 50 days. Ideally, Heart Research UK want you to give up something unhealthy, or take up something healthy, for the duration of the challenge. 50 days may seem like a long time, but that's why they are doing it - after all, it wouldn't be a challenge if it was easy. How about giving up chocolate, alcohol, takeaways or smoking? Or on the other side of the coin, why not take up running, swimming or cycling. Some people already signed up are giving up refined sugar, taking up cycling to work and one man is even giving up using any transport for 50 days – he is walking to work, cycling to the gym and jogging to the shops! Heart Research UK just ask that in support of their work, you raise money throughout your #50DayChallenge. They will provide you with a fundraising pack and any money you raise will be spent on benefitting people in your area. Heart Research UK has paid for £22.6million of medical research into the prevention, treatment and cure of heart disease across the country. Your support will help them carry on this work through 2017 and beyond. To sign up visit : www.heartresearch.org.uk/50days call 0113 234 7474 or email community@heartresearch.org.uk Please mention the BT8 Focus Magazine when contacting advertisers
