to your July / August magazine

Hello again everyone, Summer is finally here! I’m looking forward to having my break from magazine publishing in July. I’ll be catching up on my Accounts, making jam from all the produce in our allotment, tidying that pile of clothes in the bottom of the wardrobe (maybe!), clearing out my office, re-arranging the ‘stuff’ that has collected in the garage and I might even throw some bits and pieces in the bin. Phew! After all that, I’ll be happy to get back to work on the September issue. Hopefully, there’ll also be time to sit in the garden for a while with my feet up and read a book. I hope you all have a lovely Summer break too, and make the most of any good weather. Remember if you use businesses or services from the Focus, please tell them where you saw their ad. Until next time!

Let’s be optimistic and pray for a long hot summer. What gadgets can help your summer really sizzle? From making parties more entertaining to ensuring your barbecued food is full of flavour and not food poisoning, gadgets are here to help you make the most of every second of summer. One of the big trends this year is solar power - not because Britain has suddenly got sunnier, but because the combination of more efficient solar technology and low-power technology such as LED lights means solar gadgets work properly, even when it’s a bit dull. You’ll have seen endless solar lights and spotlights, but how about solar-powered water fountains, bird baths or other water features? You can spend from around £50 to several hundred pounds depending on how complex the feature is and what it’s made of: cheap ones tend to be made of resin, while natural stone takes you into the hundreds. Solar power is also very good for charging phones, which is handy if you’ve embraced streaming music and use your smartphone to play sounds in the garden. It pays to shop around: for example the PowerBee Executive charger, which has an RRP

6

To advertise t: 90 817579

of £39.99, is widely available for as little as £13.99. While you’re at it, you could buy yourself a solar powered wireless speaker too: the Gemtune Kinna speaker is £40, while the larger and longer range Jabadoo wireless outdoor solar speaker is £99. Even if you don’t go solar, a wireless speaker is an excellent investment for summertime sounds, as it means you don’t need to keep your music close to a power point. For many of us summer means outdoor cooking, and of course there are plenty of products designed just for us. The Looftlighter (£48) and BBQ Dragon (£46) use super-heated air to get your barbecue started quickly, while the iGrill Mini (£43) is a Bluetooth thermometer that tells your phone when your food is ready. If money’s no object, the SmartGrill offers voice control, recipe apps and notifications on your phone or tablet. The bad news: the smallest one is around £1,400 and the most expensive model, the 42-inch, is nearly £7,000. Gadgets aren’t just about grilling, and they don’t all require a second mortgage either. Automatic wine coolers cost from around £50 and can chill a bottle of white wine in less than 10 minutes, while the lower-

e: info@localfocusmags.co.uk

tech bottle wraps sit in the fridge until you need them, chill bottles in around 15 minutes and cost £9.99. Beer drinkers can join in too: the Xcellent Global Beer Chiller Chilling Sticks, stainless steel rods you freeze and then stick in your beer bottles, are £9.99 for two. The chillers work in some soft drink bottles too. We started off with optimism, but let’s add some realism too: the British weather being what it is, it’s a good idea to have early warning of incoming bad weather. An outdoor weather station provides just that, and you can choose from traditional clock designs with integrated barometers and thermometers from around £25 or go high-tech with a wireless weather station, which can cost from around £25 to several hundred pounds depending on the features you want to have. Or you could always go on Amazon and buy the Amscan PPP GB Umbrella Hat, which offers the protection of an umbrella with the hands-free convenience of a hat for just £2.99.

Have you ever thought of starting your own business? Becoming your own boss can be a great idea on a number of levels. Perhaps you feel frustrated in your current job or need more flexibility around your family. Do you have a hobby which you could turn into a money-spinner. Or maybe you enjoy the idea of being in charge of your own destiny! Whatever the reason, setting up your own business can tick a lot of boxes. There are of course, challenges as well. A fear of failure, worry over lack of expertise, making difficult decisions on your own... This is where Inspire Business Centre can help. Inspire is a leading local enterprise agency based in Dundonald which delivers the Go For It Regional start-up initiative in partnership with Lisburn & Castlereagh City Council. We help by demystifying the process, providing advice and signposting to other sources of support. We do this through one-to-one mentoring, writing a business plan for you and providing guidance on the documents you need to access loans from the bank or funding from other sources. Did you know, for example, that Invest Northern Ireland regularly put out calls for applications to access ÂŁ5,000 Innovation Vouchers to help new and existing businesses innovate, develop and grow. If you would like to hear more, why not come and have a chat with me at our stand in the Lough Moss Leisure Centre, Carryduff, any Wednesday morning in August between 9 and 12? You can also reach me, or my colleague Louise, by ringing us at Inspire on 028 9055 7557. Emma

Award Winning Chef Kelan McMichael takes the bull by the horns in Ballynahinch, to open his first restaurant venture Ballynahinch’s eagerly awaited new restaurant - the Bull & Ram - is now open. Chef Kelan McMichael, previously at The Poachers Pocket in Lisbane (winner of 2015 Best Gastro Pub) has a passion for local, County Down ‘no frills’ food. This has inspired him to create an imaginative, modern yet informal menu that showcases the very best of local produce and ingredients, all underpinned with incredible flavours. Ironic and also iconic, the venue chosen to host Kelan’s first restaurant is a beautiful Grade 1 listed Edwardian butchers shop in Ballynahinch which has been lovingly restored with the help of architect Sean Furey, of Gradon Architecture. As work was undertaken on this listed building, stunning original features were revealed - from the exquisite tiles on the walls and floors, to the actual bull and ram head. Kelan McMicheal says; “ After 15 years as a chef and having the privilege to work in some incredible restaurants as Head Chef, I felt ready to undertake my own venture. I fell in love with the building in Ballynahinch and it has been full of surprises over the last few months as it has literally unveiled its hidden treasures to us. I have been experimenting with my modern, bistro menu over the years and want to celebrate the true wealth of incredible seasonal, local produce that is on offer in abundance here in Co. Down. Strangford Lobster, Kilkeel crab on toast, Hannan Meats dry-aged in a Himalayan salt chamber to a simple French Onion Soup all served with a glass of James Nicholson’s finest wines.” The Bull & Ram has created twelve new jobs, will enjoy eighty covers and be open seven days a week all day for lunch and dinner. Please see the Bull and Ram main advert on the Back Cover. 16

POLICE ADVICE - GET HOME SAFE

CANCER FUND FOR CHILDREN

Police in Lisburn & Castlereagh are promoting their get home safe message as summer beckons and the concert and festival season begins.

Betterhomes Group, Northern Ireland’s premier home improvement company plan to carry a full size window frame to the top of Slieve Donard on Sunday 28th August alongside nearly 200 other participants as part of Cancer Fund for Children’s annual Slieve Donard climb event, which Betterhomes are proudly sponsoring.

Supt. Sean Wright said: “The summer is almost upon us and many young adults will be travelling home as university comes to an end. Many people will also be travelling to concerts and festivals over the summer months and we want to make sure that everyone enjoys themselves in a safe way. 

If you are going out socialising the most important thing is to drink responsibly. If you go out in a group, stay in a group – don’t let any of your friends wander off on their own. Don’t leave your drink unattended or accept a drink from someone you don’t know. If you feel drunk, dizzy or disorientated, seek help from a trusted friend or member of staff. Give careful consideration before you decide to leave with someone you have just met and remember that without consent it is rape. Make arrangements to get home before you even leave the house and never take a lift from a stranger. Make sure your mobile phone is fully charged before you go out for the night. Keep an eye on your friends. If you get into a heated situation, walk away and keep yourself

Money raised through the climb will help fund a range of local services including residentials for children and young people at the charity’s unique log cabin, Narnia, located nearby in the tranquil foothills of the Mourne Mountains. To join the charity’s Climb visit www.cancerfundforchildren, call 028 9080 5599 or email alex@cancerfundforchildren.com

POLICE INFORMATION NOTICES - BOGUS CALLERS Residents should be wary of bogus callers. Most callers to your home are genuine, but precautions need to be taken to prevent bogus callers getting into your home. Just because a caller says they’re from your water or gas company, the council, or even the police, it doesn’t necessarily mean they are. Check their identity card carefully even if the caller has pre-arranged an appointment. Don’t let visitors who are in a hurry, pressurise or confuse you - ask them to wait outside while you confirm who they are, genuine visitors won’t mind waiting. Quickcheck is a free telephone service available 24 hours a day all year round. To check the identity of a caller to your door, ring FREEPHONE 0800 0130 22 90. Your call will be answered personally and promptly by a trained operator.

DOMESTIC ABUSE – Police urge people to speak out to stop it A new campaign has been launched by the Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI) and Policing and Community Safety Partnerships (PCSPs) to encourage people to report incidents of domestic abuse. The key message of the campaign ‘If you feel like you’re walking on eggshells - that’s domestic abuse’ is designed to encourage the reporting of incidents and make victims aware that they can take steps to stop it. The campaign will run from now until the end of July and will consist of billboard, adshels, radio and online advertising across Northern Ireland. The police respond to an incident of Domestic Abuse every 19 minutes. While this is a shocking statistic there is a belief that a large number of domestic incidents are still going unreported. Detective Chief Superintendent George Clarke, Head of the PSNI’s Public Protection Branch, said: “Between March 2015 and April 2016, there were 28,392 domestic abuse incidents reported to police, which is an increase of 105 incidents compared to the same period last year. We welcome the increase because we believe this shows confidence is increasing in the police. However; we know that incidents are still going unreported. Very often people who are being abused feel isolated, vulnerable and frightened and don’t know where to turn. Through the campaign we are encouraging all victims regardless of age, race, gender or sexuality to come forward and report the matter to the police. Speak out to stop it. Anne Connolly Chair of the Northern Ireland Policing Board said: “While it is encouraging that the reporting of Domestic Abuse incidents has risen since last year, we need to reach out to victims who still feel unable to take the first steps to get out of what must be a terrifying situation. This campaign, which the Board fully endorses, emphasises that Domestic abuse can take many forms and creep into everyday life so victims barely notice that anything is wrong. The message is clear – it is wrong and we need to stop it. We hope more victims will come forward and seek the help they need.” There are dedicated domestic abuse officers across Northern Ireland to ensure that all domestic abuse crimes are investigated, as well as providing support and information to victims about police procedures and legal proceedings. A 24-hour Domestic and Sexual Helpline is available to anyone who has concerns about domestic or sexual violence, now or in the past on 0808 802 1414. The PCSP and the Police should strongly encourage anyone suffering from domestic abuse to contact their local police on the non-emergency 101 or in an emergency always call 999. 38

ST ITA’S PRIMARY SCHOOL Primary 7 Leavers’ Presented ‘YeHa’. Primary 7 worked hard practising their singing, dancing and acting for their production of “Ye-Ha” on Thursday 16th June. The funny tale follows a chef called Wilbur from Splodge City and his adventures when he is made Sheriff of the town. The show involved adventures with Cowboys, Indians, mixed with some energetic dancing. Congratulations to the children who performed at our annual Music Recital. They were all fantastic and all their hard work over the year really showed. We had some beautiful performances by our music staff. Miss Grimes performed Sarabande & Double from Partita and Ms Briggs performed alongside one of our past pupils Miss Katie Johnston. Mrs Browne even took to the stage to perform “On My Own”. The night was a great success! Huge thanks to all our music staff for all their hard work this year.
