Deadline for adverts for the March/ April BT8 Focus: Mon 13th Feb

As I write, it’s just over a week to Christmas and this is the first Christmas in our family where all four of us are working! My daughter, who is the youngest, got a ‘proper’ job in October after leaving Uni in the Summer and is now more or less independent. If I did make resolutions, the first one would be to fly over to Manchester and Edinburgh more often to visit them. We’ve got some ‘New Year Resolution’ themed articles to entertain you in this issue and plenty of puzzles. Add to that some brilliant special offers from our local businesses who are all vying for your custom in the bleak month of January. See all the offers below and do take advantage 20% off seems to be a recurring theme, for some reason! Until next time!

It’s that time of year again: gym owners rub their hands together in glee as the entire world makes New Year resolutions to sort out their health, their fitness or their looks. But while many of those gym memberships will turn out to be expensive mistakes as the initial fervour fades, a few wellchosen gadgets could keep you on the right track all year round.

the Misfit Ray is prettier still, resembling a bracelet rather than a watch. It’s half the price of the Garmin and offers good all-round fitness-tracking features. Over 2017 we’ll see a lot more wearable trackers, many of them odd: fancy a Welt, a sensorenabled belt that tracks your steps for as long as you keep your trousers on?

Health and fitness tracking is huge in technology right now, largely because it’s still a relatively untapped market: even the bestknown fitness-tracking smartwatch, the Apple Watch, has only sold a few million units. That means there are plenty of firms hoping to win over everyone from casual dieters to mountain explorers.

If you’re more concerned about what you’re putting into your body than what you’re sweating out, smartphone apps offer all kinds of diet and lifestyle tracking - and increasingly those apps tie in with platforms such as Apple Health, WiThings’ HealthMate, Microsoft Health, Jawbone UP and many more. Platforms are designed to enable data sharing from multiple trackers, so for example Apple’s For the latter category, outdoor watches such as the Casio Smart Health app can get data not just Outdoor Watch are built to military from the iPhone it’s on but also from the Apple Watch, from specifications for toughness and wireless scales and from a wide deliver accurate GPS, as well as range of wired and wireless health recording your hikes and climbs. If -monitoring devices. If you haven’t that sounds like overkill, and for most of us it probably is, the £170 already committed to a particular health-tracking platform, it’s a very Garmin Vivosmart HR+ is one of good idea to check out sites such the best all-round fitness trackers as Wareable.com to find out the for monitoring your heart rate, latest news and rumours about recording your activity and tracking GPS. It’s pretty, too - and the different manufacturers. For

example, at the time of writing Microsoft has announced the end of its Microsoft Band tracking device, so if you buy one now you might not be able to get a repair for it or a replacement one if it breaks. It also means that if you want to upgrade from a Band 2, there won’t be a Band 3 to fulfil your wishes. Gadgets don’t just help you when you’re exercising or watching what you eat. They can help you when you’re asleep too. Many wearable devices such as the Fitbit Blaze and Surge, Fossil Marshal, Pebble Time and Apple Watch (via thirdparty apps) can monitor your sleep, gathering data to help you identify the triggers of a poor night’s sleep and the best times to set the alarm for, and the best times to head to bed. The data recorded does vary from device to device and some are more practical than others - wearing a smartwatch in bed all night means you’ll have to charge it in the morning - but the insights can be useful. Ready to change your life? Sarah-Jane Middleton lost 30lbs in just 13 weeks following the birth of her son in July this year and has been helping others to change their lives by running her own Slimming World group since September. ‘I felt frumpy and fed up and decided enough was enough when I was avoiding having my photograph taken with my lovely new baby,’ explained the Belfast mum. ‘I decided I needed a change because I was feeling so miserable and that’s why i joined Slimming World’. Sarah-Jane lost 5.5lbs in her first week and hasn't looked back since. She has been amazed at how quickly the weight has come off and how easy it has been. ‘I have such a passion for food and I love cooking. Slimming Worlds eating plan is so generous that I never have to feel hungry. The whole family can eat the same meals, this is not a diet, just lots of lovely, healthy food. I make chips, curries, bolognese and ‘fakeaways’ at the weekend so I don't feel like I’m missing out watching Saturday night TV! I use my slow cooker a lot so it’s not time consuming to do.’ Sarah-Jane is hoping her fantastic weight loss will encourage others who are trying to lose weight. ‘Some people think that these groups are like ‘Fat Fighters’ from the Little Britain programme and are scared to come. That couldn't be further from the truth. At Slimming World we have a strict no humiliation guarantee, your weight will never be disclosed. We are there to support each other and have a bit of a laugh while we’re at it. Losing weight doesn't have to be all doom and gloom.’ Sarah-Jane runs a Slimming World group in Cairnshill Methodist Church, facing the Park and Ride, on a Monday evening at 7.30pm. She will also be starting a new group on a Saturday morning at 9.30am from 7th January in the same venue. Call Sarah-Jane on 07834 392491 for more information or check out the Facebook page ‘Cairnshill Slimming World’. ‘Come along and start to change your life, it will be the best decision you ever make.’ Ingredients:

• • • •

Low calorie cooking spray

1 x 400g can chopped tomatoes

2 shallots, finely chopped 2 garlic cloves, crushed 350g lean beef mince (5% fat or less)

• •

280ml beef stock

• • •

1 level tbsp Worcestershire sauce

225g button mushrooms, thinly sliced Salt & ground black pepper 275g spaghetti, dried

Method: Spray a pan with low calorie cooking spray and cook the shallots and garlic for 2–3 minutes until just softened. Stir in the mince and cook for 2–3 minutes until browned. Stir in the mushrooms and cook for 1 minute. Add the chopped tomatoes, stock and Worcestershire sauce. Season lightly and bring to the boil. Reduce the heat and simmer for about 15 minutes until reduced and thickened. Check the seasoning. Meanwhile, cook the spaghetti in a large pan of salted boiling water, as per the packet instructions, until just tender. Drain and divide between 4 serving plates. Top with the Bolognese sauce and sprinkle with grated Parmesan cheese if you fancy.

Could 2017 be the year you dare to dream? Becoming your own boss can be a great idea on a number of levels. Perhaps you feel frustrated in your current job or need more flexibility around your family. Do you have a hobby which you could turn into a money-spinner? Whatever the reason, setting up your own business can tick a lot of boxes. There are of course, challenges as well. A fear of failure, worry over lack of expertise, anxiety about having to make difficult decisions on your own... This is where Inspire Business Centre can help.

Working in partnership with:

you what it’s made of. Van Cleef & Arpels So First (from £32) is a nice one to try. Light, fresh and feminine, it’s bursting with floral notes, such as freesia and frangipani, with a warm base of vanilla and sandalwood.

by Kate Duggan www.kateduggan.co.uk It seems you can barely pick up a magazine without reading about another new skincare ‘miracle worker’, from skin softeners and beauty essences, to micellar water. Most of these are ‘nice to haves’ rather than essentials. If you are looking to up your skin care regime though, I’d recommend adding a serum. They’re more concentrated than a moisturiser, and designed to target specific concerns, from fine lines to blemishes. French brand Ekia’s Sérum Fermeté – Highly Active Firming Serum, is designed to tighten and lift skin. The ‘magic ingredient’, a tree extract called dragon’s blood sap, is said to help firm skin, smooth fine lines, increase moisture and aid skin renewal. My skin certainly felt tighter and more hydrated after using the serum. £48.99 from www.hollandandbarrett.com. It’s easy to get stuck in a perfume rut. Rather than play it safe with your favourite scent, why not head to a local perfume shop and try a few new ones? Ideally, spritz a perfume on a card first. If you like the scent immediately, and still do after half an hour, then try it directly on your skin. Fragrance is designed to change over time, so don’t just spray, sniff and buy. Give it time to show 18

Many of us are guilty of splashing out on top of the range hair straighteners and styling products, then throwing whatever shampoo and conditioner is on offer in our basket. My top hair care recommendation is to go for a gentler, decent shampoo and conditioner. Personally, I avoid any that contain sodium lauryl sulphate, as I find it leaves my hair dry and brittle. JASÖN do some great haircare products, priced from around £6.50 for a half-litre bottle that will last for ages. If you’re looking to treat yourself however, I can recommend Saach Organics Hair Strengthening Shampoo and Nourishment Conditioner. They’re packed with nourishing natural ingredients, such as almond oil, coconut milk and hibiscus, and leave my highlighted hair feeling soft and healthy. Prices start from £9.95 at www.saachorganics.com. Makeup bags and brushes can be a bit of a breeding ground for bacteria, and that can lead to spots and skin irritation. So if you haven’t given them a wash for a while, now’s the time. Clean brushes with a gentle hand wash or baby shampoo, pat them dry and then leave to air dry. Alternatively, if they’re looking a bit worse for wear, treat yourself to some new ones. The Nanshy range is a good choice. They’re made with premium synthetic fibres (so cruelty-free), assembled by hand and rigorously tested. They’re also lovely and soft and great for blending. Nanshy brushes start from £5.95 at www.myshowcase.com.

With frost, rain and perhaps even some snow, at this time of year our gardens can be in for quite a battering. Plants in containers are particularly vulnerable to freezing or frosting, and thinwalled containers pose the greatest threat. Where possible, plunge your pots by digging a hole in the soil and placing the plant in its pot into the hole. If it’s too heavy to move then wrap it well in several layers of bubble wrap, polythene or old curtains. You can use lengths of hessian to create a more appealing view if the container

is in a very prominent position. If very harsh weather is forecast or a spell of mild weather has promoted some soft, new growth, drape a double layer of horticultural fleece over the top growth of the plants and anchor it well. Alternatively, consider Easy Fleece Jackets: they come in three sizes and have a drawstring and toggle so that you can easily insert the plant and then secure it – find out more on my website www.pippagreenwood.com/ products/protect-your-crops.

BESPOKE DESIGN; BUILD & PLANTING

Evergreens in containers and in open ground may suffer from drought as well as foliage or stem growth, so continue to water these, especially if they are in a sheltered spot or the weather has been dry. A deep mulch applied to the soil or compost surface before the ground freezes will help to keep water available. Visit Pippa’s website www.pippagreenwood.com to see Pippa’s favourite gardening items and lots more besides.

• 1 butternut squash, peeled and flesh diced • 1 onion, peeled & finely chopped • 2 garlic cloves, peeled & crushed • 1 tsp dried oregano • 3 tbsp olive oil • 200g baby spinach leaves • 250g pack fresh egg lasagne sheets • 250g ricotta cheese • 300g cottage cheese • 150g ready-grated mozzarella cheese • 25g pine nuts • Green salad, to serve

TIP Instead of the spinach you could use lightly fried slices of courgette or sliced beefsteak tomatoes.

32

Preheat the oven to 200C, Fan 180C, Gas Mark 6. Place the diced butternut squash, onion, garlic and oregano in a large roasting tin and drizzle over 2 tbsp of the olive oil. Season with salt and freshly ground black pepper and toss to mix. Roast in the oven for 20-25 minutes until the squash is very tender. Cool for 10 minutes. Transfer everything from the roasting tin (including any pan juices) to a food processor and process until smooth, adding a little hot water if needed to give the mixture a spreadable consistency. Steam the spinach for 1-2 minutes until just wilted. Place the lasagne sheets in a large shallow heatproof dish and cover with boiling water. Leave for 3-4 minutes to soften then lift out of the water and drain on kitchen paper. Mix together the ricotta and cottage cheeses in a bowl along with half the mozzarella cheese. Spread a third of the squash mixture in the base of a square medium-sized ovenproof dish. Top with a layer of wilted spinach followed by a layer of the cheese mixture and a layer of lasagne sheets, cutting them to fit if needed. Repeat the layers two more times, finishing with lasagne sheets and a thin layer of the remaining cheese mixture. Scatter over the rest of the mozzarella cheese and the pine nuts, and drizzle over the rest of the olive oil. Bake for 2530 minutes until the cheese topping is golden and bubbling. Serve with green salad.

Belfast HSC Trust together with South Eastern HSC Trust is holding ‘Til I Grow Up’ on Thursday 9th February 2017, 7-9pm at the Crowne Plaza Hotel, Belfast. The event will inform members of the public about the need for families for a number of children until they reach adulthood. The vast number of children in care in the Belfast and South Eastern Trust areas live with foster carers. For many it is hoped that they will return to live with their birth family but there is a small number of children who may never be able to live with their birth parents. Both HSC Trusts recognise the needs of children for security and stability and ideally a permanent home to give them the best chance in life. However, there is an ongoing shortage of ‘forever homes’ – that is, where the child will live long term with the same family until they grow up. Each child is unique and their needs are as individual as the adults who can provide the secure future they need. The important thing is the commitment and ability to attend to these needs. You must like children, be child centred in your approach and be able to give time, love, fun and security. It is important you are resilient, flexible and have realistic expectations.

‘Til I Grow Up’ will provide an opportunity to talk to experienced social workers and foster carers and learn more about specific children needing placements.

PSNI MESSAGE - LIGHT UP FOR LIFE This winter the Police Service of Northern Ireland are appealing to motorists, cyclists and pedestrians to ‘Light Up For Life’ during the dark winter months. Supt. Sean Wright said; “Everyone needs to be aware of the darker mornings and nights. It’s everyone’s responsibility to look out for each other on the roads. In particular pedestrians and cyclists need to make sure they can be seen by drivers on dark evenings. “Pedestrians out during the daytime should consider wearing brightly coloured or fluorescent clothing as it shows up well in daylight and at dusk and wear something reflective at night so you can be seen in car headlights. Cross the road at pedestrian crossings whenever you can – at night if there is a crossing nearby, try to cross in a well-lit place. At night if you are walking in an area which has poor lighting, it is safer to carry a torch. “Cyclists need to make sure they have a clean and 36

working white front light, a red backlight and red reflector at the back. ALWAYS wear a helmet and reflective clothing. “Motorcyclists bear in mind it will be harder for drivers to see you if you are wearing dark clothing at night. Wear reflective clothing and keep your lights on,” said the police officer. “Drivers shouldn’t wait until it is fully dark to turn lights on; use dipped headlights to help other road users see you. Take particular care around schools in the morning and also in the evenings as children might be playing in fading light. Make sure your windows, mirrors and lights are clear to make sure you can see and be seen. “Low light coupled with bad weather will make things very tricky for everyone. Motorists should proceed with caution in wet weather bearing in mind stopping distances in the wet are much greater than when the roads are dry. Taking a little extra care, looking out for each other and being courteous in hazardous conditions can help to keep you safe on the roads this winter.”

HAPPY NEW YEAR

WISHING YOU...

PEACE WITH GOD

Therefore being justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ. (Bible – Romans 5 v 1)

FORGIVENESS OF SINS

Through this man (the Lord Jesus Christ) is preached unto you the forgiveness of sins: And by him all that believe are justified from all things. (Bible – Acts 13 v 38 &39)

LASTING CONTENTMENT

Blessed (happy) is he whose transgression is forgiven, whose sin is covered. (Bible – Psalms 32 v 1)

CERTAINTY OF HEAVEN

For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life (in Heaven). (Bible – John 3 v 16)

DEAR READER

It is our desire and prayer that 2017 will be the beginning of a happy future for you. True joy and lasting happiness can only be found through a personal knowledge of Jesus Christ as Lord as Saviour. Have you considered the cost of dying without Him as Saviour? For what shall it profit a man, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul? (Bible – Mark 8 v 36) He that believeth not the Son shall not see life but the wrath of God abideth on him. (Bible – John 3 v 36) For more info or a free Bible contact William 02890 813500 or www.newtownbredagospelhall.com Gospel meeting – Sundays @ 7p.m. All very welcome. CAIRNSHILL PRIMARY SCHOOL Stone Age Day The Primary 5 children had great fun learning all about the Stone Age. From making clay pots to having a wild boar hunt the children had a fantastic day learning all about this period of history. 50th Celebrations This year, Cairnshill PS is celebrating our 50th birthday! A lot has changed since school first opened back in 1966 and we want to celebrate this special birthday with a few special events throughout the year. Many of the events will be for our current pupils but parents and past pupils will get the chance to join in with some of them too. We have already had a balloon release and a special number 50 maths day. There are lots more exciting activities planned so keep an eye on our website for more details. If you were a Cairnshill pupil 'back in the day' why not share your memories with us or send us any photos or memorabilia that you have. Cairnshill Celebrate Christmas In December we had over 550 children perform at seven different nativity performances. From the nursery children right up to our big Primary 7s, all the children performed to family and friends. Our choir and orchestra performed at our senior carol service and also sang on Radio Lapland!
