Hello again everyone,

Unfortunately I cant control the weather - but I’d like to say a heartfelt thank you to all my fabulous distributors who deliver this magazine every month, no matter what it’s like outside. Getting the December issue delivered was particularly challenging with all that constant rain, so I’m hoping for better weather in 2016, or at least for a few dry days at each month end. Lots of ‘New Year’ themed reading in this issue to while away the long winter evenings, but looking on the bright side, the nights are already getting shorter and Spring is definitely coming. Have a great month. Until next time....

In the 1980s, it was the Filofax; in the 1990s, the Personal Digital Assistant or PDA. Today, though, we’re more likely to stay on top of our lives using a mobile device. Whether you’re trying to get more organised or just want to stay on top of your New Year’s resolutions, gadgets can help. If your resolution was to get fitter or take better care of your health, there are stacks of devices that can accurately monitor your vital signs and your exercise routines. Firms such as Fitbit offer an entire range of fitness trackers ranging from the clip-on, £49 Zip to fully-featured smart watches such as the £199 Surge. Whichever kind you go for, the devices can track your activity to let you know how active you’ve been, how far you’ve travelled and how many calories you’ve burned, and they can send that data to a phone so you can keep track of your progress. If you’re interested in particular sports, Sat-Nav specialist Garmin makes a range of fitness trackers designed specifically for runners, golfers and other sportsmen and women. You don’t need to be active to benefit from smart gadgets, though. If your resolution was to lose

6

weight, a set of smart scales - from around £29 for stand-alone scales to £150 for scales that communicate with phones or PCs over Wi-Fi, enabling you to store your progress in an app or even share it with others online - can show you not just how much weight you’ve lost but also how your body is composed. So, for example, if you’re replacing fat with muscle - which is heavier than fat - you’ll be able to see that you’ve made great progress even if the actual weight displayed by the scales hasn’t changed. Then again, you’ll know that by the way your clothes feel, so maybe you don’t need smart scales after all. We’ve mentioned phones a few times now, and that’s because pound for pound they’re the most useful resolution trackers and life organisers: the reason stand-alone electronic organisers are a rare sight these days is because smartphones do a better job for less money. A really good Android phone can be as little as £40, and for that you’re getting a smartphone with built-in calendars and reminders and the opportunity to use apps such as the superb MyFitnessPal, which can track your exercise and can use your phone’s camera to scan barcodes and work out nutritional

information from them automatically. More expensive devices such as Apple’s iPhones include motion processors that can track your steps, flights climbed and distance travelled without requiring a dedicated fitness tracker, and Apple’s own Health app can record that data plus anything else you’d like to monitor. If you’d rather do most of that automatically, MyFitnessPal is available for Apple devices too. The other thing that smartphones do is enable you to join like-minded souls. Many fitness devices and apps - Fitbits, Nike Fuelbands, the MyFitnessPal app - also have online communities where you can compare progress, share your stories or just hang around chatting with people who are doing the same things as you. That’s useful, because while fitness devices and apps are great, there’s one thing that only human encouragement can provide, and that’s the motivation to stick to your plan even when you don’t feel like it - and someone to laugh with when you need a bit of a boost. tracker; Garmin Forerunner smartwatch for runners; Withings smart scales; RunKeeper fitness app

 2 tbsp oil  600g lean lamb steaks, cut into chunks

 1 garlic clove, peeled and crushed  1 large onion, peeled and chopped  6 tbsp balti curry paste  75g red split lentils  400g can chopped tomatoes  200g baby spinach leaves  2 tbsp chopped fresh coriander  Boiled basmati rice and lemon wedges to serve For a spicier flavour replace the balti curry paste with one that has a little more heat such as Madras. Adding some finely chopped red chilli when frying the onion will also boost the heat factor!

10

Heat half the oil in a large heavy-based pan over a medium-high heat. Add half the lamb pieces and fry for 3-4 minutes, turning occasionally until browned and sealed all over. Remove the lamb with a slotted spoon and set aside. Add the rest of the oil and fry the rest of the lamb pieces in the same way. Add the onion and garlic (and a splash more oil, if needed) and fry over a medium heat, stirring occasionally for 3-4 minutes, then stir in the curry paste and fry for a further minute until fragrant. Return the meat to the pan and stir to coat in the curry paste. Stir in the chopped tomatoes, 300ml cold water and the lentils. Reduce the heat then cover and simmer for about 30 minutes, or until the lentils are soft and the meat is tender. Season to taste with salt and freshly ground black pepper. Stir in the spinach and coriander. Cover and cook for a further 2-3 minutes until the spinach has just wilted. Serve with the boiled basmati rice and lemon wedges.

Nature Focus In another of a new series of articles about our local environment, Helen Long writes about her observations of nature a bit further afield, outside Carryduff. This month Helen visits Islandhill....

ISLANDHILL is roughly seven miles from Carryduff. You go through Comber towards Newtownards, and turn right at the sign just outside Comber. You drive down a narrow road for roughly a mile and arrive at the carpark/picnic area. On a good day you should have a fine view over the northern end of Strangford Lough. The place fascinates me for a variety of reasons. First of all there is the causeway which takes you out to the small island. This path is completely covered to a depth of several feet at high tide, cutting the island off completely. I find that a rather marvellous and mysterious thing. Here we are in inland Carryduff, never thinking of the tireless work of the tides, rising and falling twice a day, all around the shores of Ireland!

Islandhill

Then there is the history of the little island itself. Endowed with the very unpoetic name of Rough Island, it was inhabited until about 100 years ago. The remains of a house and orchard are still visible. Archaeologists have found such things as flint arrow-heads there, dating as far back as 4,000BC, proving that this little patch of County Down was a popular des res for Mesolithic man! And indeed on one spectacular occasion I actually found a half-worked flint, which I got dated professionally. I treasure it, as I contemplate whose hands worked it and in what a different world! Yet still with the same eternal tides ebbing and flowing.

When the tide is low enough, you can walk across to the island, and do a circuit along the path built for that purpose. Of course it’s the sea-birds that are the main attraction here, and the commonest residents are the oyster-catchers, with their bright Half-worked flint red beaks and constant calls of kleep, kleep! And in autumn and winter there are the wonderful, iconic Brent Geese, in their tens of thousands, all the way from Arctic Canada! I find it so relaxing even just to sit in the car with the windows down, and listen to the soothing sounds of the lough lapping against the rocks, breathe in the exhilarating sea air, and let my mind wander far out to sea‌I find I always sleep better after a trip to Islandhill! CARRYDUFF PRIMARY SCHOOL Pupils entertained guests at three wonderful concerts at Christmas. P1-P4 performed the nativity ‘Starlight’, (below) whilst P5-P7 (right) presented ‘An Evening of Christmas Music’.

CARR PRIMARY SCHOOL Our school choir have taken part in a variety of events throughout December. They sang beautifully at Carr Baptist Church as part of the Young at Heart Carol Service. The children really enjoyed the service and we would like to thank Carr Baptist for asking us to sing and for making us feel so welcome. The Carryduff Connect Churches United Christmas Carol Service was another great success for our choir. The choir took part in the service and sang alongside other local primary schools.

Mr Wright leading our choir at Carr Baptist Church

We would like to say a huge thank you to the parents and pupils who took time out of their busy weekends to attend the service. All of our pupils also performed wonderfully in our Christmas Production "Straw and Order".

HOPE03, a small local community Charity based in Carryduff, is looking for individuals or groups to help support and sustain a self help enterprise - WOW Bags - based in the poorest area of the Philippines. Helen, who is from Ireland, set up WOW bags - she will continue the story ........ “The WOW bag (Wonders of Waste) is made with 100% recycled plastic. Collecting, washing and sorting the drinks packs offers a reliable and fair income to the poorest families. The bags are designed and sewn by women on the Island of Luzon, the largest of the 7,000 islands of the Philippines. You might be interested to know that even the string supplied is also fair trade and made by farmers from the Subanen tribe in Mindanao. WOW bags is an ecological livelihood project working to Fair Trade principles. Each bag carries with it our hopes:  For a better future for our families  For increased care of our environment  For your enjoyment in using a WOW bag. WOW uses imagination, skill, lots of energy & good will, along with recycled plastic cartons, to address the serious challenges of poverty reduction & environmental protection in the Philippines. Along the way we also make beautiful products, build new relationships & provide a model of how people, by working together in very simple ways, can improve our world. In 2015 we will continue to demonstrate in practical ways that reducing, reusing & recycling makes a difference to people and to our planet. WOW has been able to offer 14 people dignified work & shows how profitable it can be to recycle. Each bag sale contributes towards building a better life for a needy family here & WOW could not do this without your general interest support & commitment to helping with our sales. In 2014 we recycled 69,262 discarded pouches into 1,726 lovely WOW bags. It’s great to know that with your help and support some may be under Christmas trees in places as far apart as Singapore, Boston and Belfast. WOW is about more than earning a fair wage. It is about being able to do work you take pride in and really benefit from, it’s about being able to save a couple of thousand pesos in a year and then do house repairs without getting into debt with money lenders, it is about being able to afford the bus fare to send your child to school. None of this would be achievable without support. It is vital that we find new individuals and groups willing to help sell our bags & tell the story of WOW. Every bag you sell makes a big difference to the lives of families here. I know that its hard work standing at the back of a church or at a craft fair watching people pass by & hoping that the occasional one will buy. We really do appreciate the time & energy our partners put into WOW in so many different ways.” If you would consider as an individual or group to help WOW please contact HOPE03 ...... WOW bags can be viewed on our website www.hope03.org.uk and bags and information obtained by emailing info@hope03.org.uk or phone 028 90 812640 (after 5pm). MILLENNIUM INTEGRATED PRIMARY SCHOOL Some of the children in P5 at Millennium have been making ‘fairy wish’ bottles. The brainchild behind this project is Leila Gibney who, along with her mum Clare Afshar, has been making the little bottles and selling them at the Fine & Dandy Market in Belfast. To make the bottles Leila and her classmates use small glass bottles with cork lids that they put glitter, beads, petals or whatever sparkly things they have available. The Fine & Dandy Market had a Narnia day in November and Leila and her friends Holly and Amy had a stall where they sold their bottles. Leila was chief sales person, Amy was in charge of the money and Holly gift wrapped each purchase. They worked together as a fantastic team. The three girls also had a Dates for the Diary: stall at the recent Millennium IPS School recommences for the Christmas Craft fair. To date they have new term on 6th January 2016 made nearly £100 selling the fairy wish Open Morning for prospective bottles. All the profits from the sales have Nursery and P1 families on been donated to Millennium in order to 7th January 2016 buy books for the new school library. Well done to Leila (and her mum) for her hard work and generous spirit and to Holly and Amy for helping Leila with the stall and making the bottles. Congratulations to our P5 children (and Mr Gardner) who came second in the South Eastern Education and Library Board (SEELB) ‘Sumdog’ online maths competition. They had held first place for most of the week, only slipping to second on the final day. What a tremendous achievement for the class. Well done to our school choir who sang in the annual Lough Moss Carol Concert along with Carryduff PS and Carr PS. The event was very well attended and the children all performed beautifully. Many thanks to our Parents Council for organising this year’s Christmas Craft fair and coffee morning. There were lots of lovely stalls selling jewellery, homemade chutneys, Christmas decorations and home accessories. Thanks to everyone who attended and supported this event. Well done also to Mr Donnelly and the Gaelic football team. The boys played in the regional finals of the indoor 5-a-side tournament and won their section. They have now qualified for the County final which will be held in February.

ST JOSEPH’S PRIMARY SCHOOL We are proud to announce that Aoife (P7, pictured right) was selected to represent Antrim in the All Ireland XC (Cross Country) Championships in Dublin recently. To achieve this massive honour, she ran in the Ulster XC championships on 24 th October in Jordanstown. She ran in the Under 12 race. From this, the fastest 10 runners in each of the top 3 counties qualified to represent their county in the All Ireland XC Championships. What a fabulous achievement! Well done Aoife! In early December, four members of the Eco-Committee met the Duke of Gloucester, the first cousin of Queen Elizabeth II. They met the Duke as part a special event organised by Eco-Schools NI and Keep Northern Ireland celebrating the theme of ‘Farm to Fork’. At the event the EcoCommittee told the Duke of Gloucester about all the wonderful activities undertaken in St Joseph’s to care for our environment. The Duke and other guests were extremely impressed with St Joseph’s Eco-Committee and the hard work they put in caring for the environment commenting that they were ‘great ambassadors for the school and for their generation.’ Gary from P7 is a Lego Master! Look at the wonderful ‘Agents of Shield’ vehicle he made for his Superhero project (pictured right). Gary is going to make an animation using this creation. Well Done Gary!
