I’ve had great fun putting the Christmas ads together. Also lots of Christmas events and School Open Days going on this month - all the details are on the community pages. I should give a special mention to the Carryduff Regeneration Forum who have been working hard on our behalf to organise a Christmas Tree Switch on ceremony at Eight South on Thursday 1st December. In 2016 we saw all kinds of bright ideas in technology: dual-lens cameras in smartphones, virtual reality headsets, new versions of Windows and the end of the headphone socket in iPhones. Here are the key trends we think will be driving the technology you buy, use or crave in 2017. Online TV Getting TV over the internet isn’t new, of course, but it’s changing. In October, it emerged that Netflix is now offering half the amount of titles it offered in 2012. That’s because it - and its rival Amazon is more interested in making its own programmes than in buying other people’s. From Amazon’s Jeremy Clarkson vehicle The Grand Tour to Netflix’s The Crown, some of the most exciting TV isn’t being broadcast anywhere but online. That trend’s going to accelerate in 2017. The days when online TV services resembled a particularly bad video shop’s bargain bin are disappearing fast. 4K HDR TV Television manufacturers persuaded us to upgrade from CRT TVs to flat screens, and then from standard definition TVs to high definition TVs. They tried again with 3D, without much success, and the next big home

entertainment hype is over 4K and HDR televisions. 4K, also known as Ultra HD or UHD for short, has four times the number of pixels than full HD, so it delivers really sharp images - provided you have a 4K source. There aren’t many of those around just now: Netflix has a little bit of 4K content, but most broadcasters are still on HD rather than 4K. The most recent PlayStation and Xbox One offer 4K gaming, although once again that depends on having games optimised for the resolution. It might be worth waiting to see whether 4K succeeds or if it’s another 3DTV. While 4K offers more detailed images, HDR offers more drama. It’s short for High Dynamic Range, and you might have encountered it in your smartphone’s camera: HDR delivers deeper shadows and brighter highlights than normal photography, and it’s the same with HDR TV. Virtual Reality 2017 will decide whether virtual reality is the next big thing. VR headsets from Facebook-owned Oculus, Google and Sony hit the virtual shelves in late 2016, but it’s what happens this year that will seal the format’s fate: without compelling games to play or experiences to experience, those
headsets could turn out to be very expensive paperweights. The technology is really impressive, but so was 3D TV. Super smartphones After a minor revamp in 2016, the 2017 iPhone is rumoured to be a dramatic upgrade with new screen technology and the same great cameras currently limited to the big and expensive iPhone 7 Plus. We might even see wireless charging too, something Apple’s rivals have offered for some time. Apple isn’t the only phone firm out there, of course. Samsung’s Galaxy S8 should be impressive too, and hopefully less prone to battery explosions than this year’s Galaxy Note 7. Home Automation Whether it’s Microsoft’s Cortana, Apple’s Siri or Amazon’s Alexa, this may be the year when we spend more time talking to our tech than tapping on its screens. Virtual digital assistants in our phones and in home hubs have the potential to automate everything - assuming they can finally understand non-US accents, that is. Images L to R: Netflix online

Socialising your puppy is important to its general development, and encourages a calm, confident and friendly personality that’s accepting of change and new situations. It also makes life with a dog easier for you, and helps with general training. Vary the activities You’ll retain your puppy’s interest by introducing plenty of variety, such as meeting new people and other animals in different environments, but take care not to overload their nervous system. Keep hold of your puppy at first when you meet new people, letting them gently approach your dog with a small treat. This will make it a constructive experience for the dog, and they’ll retain positive associations.

This is a tasty and healthy postChristmas day family supper and a great way to use up leftover roast turkey.
Preheat the oven to 200C, Fan 180C, Gas Mark 6. Prick the potatoes all over with a fork and place on a baking tray. Bake in the preheated oven for 45-50 minutes or until tender. Just before the potatoes are ready, heat half the oil in a frying pan and fry the onion for 6-7 minutes until tender, adding the garlic after 5 minutes. Add the peppers and turkey and fry for a further 2-3 minutes. Stir in 2 tbsp of the tomato salsa and season with salt and freshly ground black pepper to taste. Halve the baked sweet potatoes and roughly mash up the flesh with a fork. Season lightly and drizzle over half the remaining oil, then pile the turkey and pepper mixture on top of the halves. Scatter over the cheese and drizzle over the rest of the oil. Return to the oven for 10-12 minutes until the cheese has melted. Serve with chopped avocado and lime wedges. Sprinkle with freshly chopped parsley. Spoon the rest of the salsa into a bowl and serve on the side. For a vegetarian version replace the turkey with halved chestnut mushrooms or diced aubergine or courgette and use vegetarian Cheddar cheese.

Simple festive decorations can be the most appealing, says interiors expert Katherine Sorrell Who doesn’t love a natural look? Unpretentious and understated, natural Christmas decorations suit every home, large or small, modern or traditional, and make a fabulous, timeless alternative to commercialised glitz and glitter. The ideal centrepiece is a real tree, best bought from a good local stockist. Choose one that’s as fresh as possible, make a new cut at the bottom, and display in a stand (a wicker basket is perfect) that holds a reservoir of water. (Tip: the Nordmann Fir holds its needles really well.) Decorate your tree generously without overloading, and keep to a limited colour scheme (white, red, green and brown are all great), using natural materials (see box). For a touch of sparkle, twine the tree with small, plain

white fairy lights. Feeling inspired? Then make decorations with the family. Garlands of popcorn, nuts, gingerbread stars and paper strings of angels or snowflakes are adorable. Instead of shiny baubles, cut simple shapes from felt and blanket-stitch them around the outside, or make a wreath using garden clippings. Similarly, you can create wonderful decorations using sprigs of evergreen, ivy, pine cones (perhaps sprayed with artificial snow), rose hips, dried seed heads and twigs (lashed into a star shape). Or tie dried slices of apple and orange together with gardener’s string and add cinnamon sticks and star anise. If you’re short of time, all these will be in the shops, along with others such as birch bark candle holders, driftwood Christmas trees and needlefelted and knitted owls, reindeer and robins. Wrap presents in brown paper and string, or lengths of fabric and cotton ribbon. Use cardboard luggage labels, and why not embellish the plain paper with potato printing in white – something children might enjoy? For receiving presents, there’s nothing nicer than knitted stockings hanging by the fire, perhaps with some widely available printed hessian sacks for larger gifts. Fresh flowers are fabulous at Christmas – hyacinths, amaryllis and poinsettias are classic and all look particularly special in white.
Wrap pots in hessian tied with string or pop groups of them into a wicker basket; you can decorate the tops of the pots with silver moss. Less is more with this look, so laying the festive table is easy. A linen runner or place mats, plain white china, clear glass and simple decorations such as bowls of pine cones or oranges studded with cloves, and perhaps a vase full of evergreens, twigs and boughs. Cosy, welcoming and unpretentious. Finally, add candles, small and tall, anywhere their flickering glow will make you feel happy. Alternatively, tea lights look pretty inside old jam jars, which is safer if you have young children around. Pop a mince pie in the oven and heat some mulled wine on the hob, and here it is – a very merry Christmas.

heavier the rain, the worse your visibility. Driving cautiously and leaving a good distance between you and the vehicle in front is the safest thing to do. Stop! It may be stating the obvious, but when snow is falling fast don’t drive unless you really have to. Terrible weather is an occasion when putting things off until conditions improve really is the best advice. And your condition? Winter ailments can leave you exhausted and sluggish. If you don’t feel like you can drive safely, don’t risk it. Car Maintenance Is the car safe to drive? Keeping it well maintained is doubly important in winter. Worn tyres won’t hold the road in wet conditions as well as those with a good, deep tread. Make sure all exterior lights are working correctly and that wiper blades are in good condition. Check the oil, coolant and washer fluid levels. In The Wet Driving in heavy rain is difficult and can be treacherous, so take precautions. Slow down: the wetter the roads, the longer your braking distance, and the
In Snow And Ice The same advice applies if you are driving through snow or ice. Slow down and leave plenty of room between you and the vehicle in front. Use your headlights if necessary. Brake and accelerate gently. It’s not always easy to tell if you’re driving on ice, but a good rule of thumb is that if your tyres are making less noise than usual, you may well be. If you do skid, don’t brake – you’ll lock the wheels and lose control. Instead, depress the clutch and steer into the direction of the skid. When the car straightens, steer as normal. Emergency Stopping You may have more need for a wellexecuted emergency stop in winter’s slippery conditions, so remember the rules. Apply the brake, without locking the wheels. If the vehicle starts to skid, ease pressure from the pedal and then reapply. Depress the clutch just before you stop. Safe winter motoring!

Nature Focus In another of a new series of articles about our local environment, Helen Long writes about her observations of nature a bit further afield, outside Carryduff. This month Helen visits Lisburn.... Today I stood in Sloane Square, and didn’t have to put a foot outside County Down! How? Because I wasn’t in London, but in the somewhat more modest location of Killyleagh village. Both squares are named after the same man—Sir Hans Sloane, the famous scientist, collector and physician (1660-1753). Hans was born and grew up in Killyleagh (in a thatched cottage), and his interest in natural history was initially sparked by his frequent boyhood rambles along the beach, where he found and brought home many specimens to study and record. This eventually led to a medical career and many other supreme scientific achievements; he ultimately became physician to the Royal Family. By way of recognition in his place of birth, a handsome statue now graces his Square in Killyleagh, just like the one in the capital. There is much to attract the visitor in Killyleagh. There are many opportunities for those in pursuit of water sports, such as canoeing and sailing. But if you want tranquillity, then you’ll find plenty of it here—far from the madding crowds and traffic of London! If it’s history you’re after, then there’s the beautiful castle. It was built at the time of the Plantation, by the Hamilton family, and is still inhabited by their descendants! Interestingly, as Sloane’s father worked at the castle, Hans was allowed access to its library—a real bonus for a bright, inquisitive boy. In such a rural place, there is plenty of wildlife to be noticed, and I was serenaded by a shy robin, an evasive, chirruping wagtail and several smaller birds of the tit family. Best of all was the flock of mute swans, who were engaging in a feeding frenzy, as a little boy threw food into the harbour for them… Two things before I finish: Yes, I know: David Healy (never-to-be-forgotten hero of Northern Ireland’s victory over England about 12 years ago!) hails from this place too, along with several other notables, such as Revd Henry Cooke (The Black Man). Is it something in the air, I wonder?! Heading for home, I saw many small herds and flocks of contentedly grazing cattle and sheep, between Killyleagh and Crossgar. They really did my heart good. I’m sure something similar must have been familiar to the young Hans, although perhaps with different breeds of cattle, and smaller fields…

Up to 7th November this year in Northern Ireland 57 people had died on our roads as a result of a road traffic collision. Supt. Sean Wright said: “Almost everyone has a mobile phone or device of some description that they use to communicate with others via text or social media. Absolutely nothing on your Facebook page, Twitter feed or Instagram account should come before your safety and the safety of others. Using a mobile phone whilst driving increases the risk of a collision by a factor of four. Drivers are reminded that not only are there serious risks by being distracted by these mobile devices whilst in control of a vehicle, but also there are penalties and consequences to face for breaking the law. This is not just about mobile phones. Many things can distract the driver. It’s wintertime. Darkness stays longer in the morning and comes earlier in the evening. It can take time for a driver to adjust. Low light conditions require more concentration from motorists, including motorcyclists. Be aware of your surroundings, approach junctions and pedestrian crossings with utmost care and attention. “Use your mirrors to ensure there is a safe distance between you and other motorists or when you are making a manoeuvre. Don’t answer the phone. Don’t reach down to get something from the passenger foot well. Don’t get distracted. “We want to help keep people safe. On the roads, on the footpaths, behind the wheel or behind the handlebars. Please heed our advice and don’t become a statistic.”

MILLENNIUM INTEGRATED PRIMARY SCHOOL We had our annual Harvest Dedication service to welcome the P1 children to Millennium IPS. The service was led by Pastor Ritchie from Carryduff Elim Church. The children throughout the school brought in food donations which were then given to Pastor Ritchie to help families in need in the area.
Well done to Mr Mawhinney and the school rugby team that recently took part in a Rugby Blitz at Instonians Rugby Club, Shaw’s Bridge. They suffered a heavy defeat to Rosetta PS but were able to pull together and beat Knockbreda PS and finished as runners up in their group. The highlight of the tournament seems to have been the hotdogs that were served at the end!!

ST JOSEPH’S PRIMARY SCHOOL Primary 7 were exploding with excitement as they met Astronaut Tim Peake on his recent visit to Belfast. The children were among a number of specially selected schools chosen to attend a question and answer with Tim. Afterwards the children had the opportunity to meet Tim in person and have their photo taken with him. This was a fantastic experience and one which the children will not forget. A big thank you to everyone who helped to donate Christmas shoe boxes for the Hope Christmas Appeal. Representatives from the charity came in to collect the boxes and they were simply overwhelmed at the generosity shown by the St Joseph’s pupils and parents. These boxes are sure to brighten up the Christmas of some less fortunate children living elsewhere in Europe. St Joseph’s PFA organised a very successful Hallowe’en disco. A huge crowd of children and parents attended both sessions for KS1 and KS2. Although we were frightened by the ghouls, ghosts and zombies, we all had great fun! Thanks to our PFA! 40

BALLYGOWAN COMMUNITY VOICES Join a friendly and fun community choir. No auditions or previous experience is needed - we have a very mixed ability choir from those who sing in the shower, to ex choristers. Some read music, some learn from ear but with rehearsal each Friday evening everyone works well together and we make a fantastic sound.
