to your Autumn Winter issue

Hello again everyone,

It’s that time of year again, the nights are getting shorter and darker, and to coin a phrase from Game of Thrones, Winter is Coming! A wee reminder that the clocks go back at the end of October, and before we know it Hallowe’en will be over and the Christmas season will be upon us. You’ll find details on the community pages of lots of Christmas Fairs going on throughout the area in the run up to Christmas - the annual Saintfield Fair on Main Street of course on 2nd Dec, and a Yuletide Market in Rowallane Gardens on 10th and 11th Dec as well as a Craft Fair in Ballygowan Presbyterian Church on 8th Dec. I hope you find time to support them all. As this magazine is published twice a year now, please keep and use this issue until the Spring Summer issue arrives in March 2017. Thanks once again to all of you for using the magazine to support local businesses - I firmly believe we should all ‘shop local’ and support our local communities. If you contact any of the advertisers from this issue or visit their premises, please remember to tell them where you saw their ad. Until next time.... Local Focus Magazines

There’s a very good chance that this year, Santa’s sack will be stuffed with gadgets: from kidfriendly tablets to expensive iPhones, many people’s presents will be of the digital variety. But you don’t need to spend a fortune to get some great gifts.

Thank goodness for accessories, then: a leather case for a smartphone or a messenger bag for a laptop makes a great gift, although watch out for “bonded leather”, which is artificially produced and doesn’t wear like real leather. It’s usually a good idea to stay away from novelty items anything hilarious that’s designed to plug into a USB port is surely destined for landfill by Boxing Day - and if you can’t think of anything appropriate, vouchers make an excellent present. Amazon vouchers are great for everyone, iTunes vouchers are fantastic presents for anyone with an iPod, iPad or iPhone, Netflix vouchers are good for TV and film buffs, and there are stacks of vouchers for specific retailers. Keep an eye on the newspaper adverts and voucher websites, though: some shops, especially supermarkets, run multi-buy deals on vouchers such as iTunes vouchers, enabling you to save around 20%. Be careful, though, as if a retailer goes out of business it’s very unlikely that the vouchers will be redeemable, so it’s important to stick with well-known firms. A voucher for Dodgy Dave’s Digital Depot might not be the wisest investment. SAINTFIELD CHRISTMAS FAIR Santa will be at the Saintfield Christmas Fair on Friday 2nd December and will be arriving in his sleigh pulled by two of his reindeer. It is hoped to have a special guest to switch on the Christmas lights at 7.00pm outside the Orange Hall on Main Street. Santa will stroll along the street distributing sweets to the kiddies. Arranged by the Saintfield Development Association, the fair will be held along the full length of Main Street from 6.30pm to 9.00pm, so the road will be closed to vehicular traffic from 6.00pm until 9.30pm to provide a safe environment. Drivers should make alternative travel arrangements during these times.

Attractions for the kiddies will include the ever popular miniature railway and the roundabout. Street entertainers will also be there to entertain the crowd. All the children’s attractions are free, thanks to donations from local traders and businesses, together with the profits from the Saintfield Development Association fund raising activities during the year. Choral groups from local schools will be performing during the evening to get families into the festive spirit. Many of the local traders will remain open for late night shopping and there will be numerous stalls along the street to tempt you, as well as vendors with food and drinks to satisfy the hungry and thirsty. The SDA has put in a great deal of time and effort to make this year’s fair bigger and better than ever, so bring the whole family along to enjoy the village’s largest community event. Full details on the SDA website discoversaintfield.com or Facebook page.

MILLENNIUM INTEGRATED PRIMARY SCHOOL Every year at Millennium IPS, a Junior Board of Governors (JBOG) is elected. The group consists of 4 members from each of the classes in P4, P5, P6 and P7. The JBOG are the voice of the children at Millennium and are involved in bringing ideas for improvements to life at MIPS. At their monthly meetings with the school principal they learn how to chair a meeting and take minutes. They represent the school on open days, organise charity and fundraising events and judge competitions for our theme days such as Crazy Hair or Easter Bonnets.

Working closely with Mrs Roulston

In recent years the JBOG have been in charge of getting swings installed in the playground. They researched the best type of swings available, planned where the swings would go and managed the budget efficiently. They have also been involved in choosing The Millennium furniture for the new library and recommending ideas for books. Mirror We recently published a school newsletter, the ‘Millennium Mirror”. The children on the JBOG researched information for articles, took photos, interviewed people and wrote reports on the events happening in school. They have published two newsletters so far and are busy working on one for the new term. They are certainly kept very busy during their year. 36
