It’s autumn - and even though that means snow is right around the corner, I’m still excited! I’m excited and hungry and ready to nest a little bit, so we have covered all of the bases in this issue of Local Flair. And, I must admit, after almost six years of publishing Local Flair, I am still amazed at the abundance of talented artisans and quality businesses that exist around every corner of our community. I had time to meet the extraordinary metalsmith, Jim Doherty who opened his home and showed us his craft. Jim’s work also graces this issues’ cover - a mask which hangs on his Shawnee studio. An area tradition, The Duckloe family has been building their infamous Windsor Chairs in Portland since 1937, their inspiring story is one of quality and integrity. Basso Restaurant in Mountainhome prepared a feast for us and Skytop is planning the Second Annual Harvest Lake Stroll to be held November 6th around the pristine property. Before writing this article, I was sure that real family businesses were a thing of the past. In an era ridden with time management and outsourcing, successful family business seemed to have become merely legend - only existing around camp fires and within the pages of fairy tales. I am happy and honored to report however, that operating happily and very successfully in downtown Scranton is Penn Furniture - a jewel of a company and the very definition of “family” business. Founded in 1899 by Scranton resident Jerome Jaffe, Penn Furniture has been known for the last century for its dedication, quality and its passion for its product. The business started when Jerome Jaffe began selling “new” furniture and even importing furniture from all over the world. A pioneer in his day, Mr. Jaffe was unaware at the time that his small family business would grow to become the success that it is today. Each generation of Jaffes has improved upon the past. Jerome was followed in ownership by his son, Lee Jaffe, who took the business one step further. Jim Doherty: Masterful Metalsmith By: Paula Damiano

Masterful

Metalsmith A passion for metals drew Jim Doherty into his craft. He started by making silver jewelry as a hobby some twenty years ago. Then, he and his wife bought a century-old property in Shawnee, PA. In the course of remodeling, they wanted a dining room chandelier. But the low ceilings of their former goat barn wouldn’t accommodate a conventional light fixture. So, Jim decided to make one. “I didn’t have a workshop back then,” Jim recalls. “I had to heat the metal in my living room fireplace.” From that, he custom-crafted a low-profile chandelier to fit the space. A friend saw it and wanted one too – and Jim’s second career was born. Watching Jim powerfully pound a heated metal rod into submission, it’s not hard to imagine him at his other job: a Monroe County corrections officer. Jim is not your typical artisan in many respects. He’s never taken a formal art class or exhibited in a gallery – although that will change in October with his first show at Easton’s Silk Mill. Jim, who has appeared in This Old House magazine, likes variety in his projects. He makes everything from kitchen utensils (his logo is a copper ladle with his initials) and hinges to battle axes and broadswords. The antique-style weapons are used mainly for interior decoration – but Renaissance reenactors also like Jim’s work. He traded one battle axe for a tattoo. His largest creation to date is a twenty-foot steel sculpture of a tree, made for a bar in Wyoming. In the Poconos, Jim’s work shows up in a variety of places – including the taps for Shawnee Craft Brewery. He also

does demonstrations for local schools, and crafted a large outdoor piece for Pocono Elementary Center. Jim also likes to work vintage items into his creations. An outdoor kitchen behind his home includes an oven with a furnace door from the International Boiler Works, East Stroudsburg, rescued from a salvage yard. His workshop, built in 1998, contains a large forge fueled by propane and forced air. The forge reaches a

temperature of 2500 degrees, which softens metal enough to make it malleable. So what is it about metal that continues to engage him? Jim says, “Metal is more forgiving than glass or pottery or wood.” He adds, “If you make a bad cut in a $200 piece of wood, the whole thing is wasted. In metalwork, you just weld another hunk onto the project and keep going.” n This metalsmith has taken an antique craft and morphed it into a modern idiom. In 1859, a Pennsylvania craftsman named Frederick Duckloe established a small furniture-making shop in Jenkintown, PA. Four generations later, the business continues uninterrupted – although it relocated to Portland, PA in 1937. The famous Duckloe chair still uses an 18th century assembly method that prevents the chair parts from becoming loose over the years. “But we’re not just chairs!” states Barbara Duckloe Townsend. She and her brother Fred Duckloe, Jr. oversee a current staff of 15 artisans and support personnel. “Made in America” is a mantra at Frederick Duckloe & Bros., Inc. The firm’s chairs, tables, chests, benches and office furniture are mainly crafted from local woods like tiger maple, cherry and oak (they import mahogany) in the workshop just off Portland’s Main Street. Duckloe’s only retail store is located there, too. Five floors of display space showcase the company’s products. One of the spaces is in a former hotel, where the ballroom’s curly maple floors and tin walls and ceilings have been left intact. Walking through the showroom is like a walk through history, with gleaming wood surfaces begging to be caressed. The firm continues to produce copies of heritage designs, like the 18th century Windsor chairs that first made the company famous. They also make licensed copies of pieces from the Smithsonian and Philadelphia’s Independence Hall, including the Thomas Jefferson Writing Arm Chair and the Bishop White Settee. The design for Duckloe’s Pennsylvania Country Table is adapted from an old farm table found locally, with two leaves that expand the table for extra length. The extension mechanism, also copied from the original, is beautiful in its simplicity. The dovetail joint, a centuries-old joinery technique, is still used by the firm as well. Another unique item made by Duckloe is the college chair, which features a school’s seal on the top rail. At a recent retirement ceremony in Massachusetts, a university professor was presented with one of these chairs and exclaimed, “Oh, it’s a Duckloe!” It turned out that the retiring professor was originally from the Poconos and knew the furniture maker’s work. Duckloe’s traditional approach to business doesn’t preclude modern technology. A good deal of their current business comes

from the company’s website. The other major source of customers is repeat business, as loyal patrons bring their children and grandchildren to purchase their own fine furniture. A recentlyintroduced contemporary line and high-gloss white finish will complement the traditional styles that have sold so well over the decades. Restoration and refinishing are also performed in the workshop. “Watch out for nail polish remover!” say Barbara and Fred. You can’t just repair the spot – you have to refinish the entire surface. Other furniture care tips from the brother-and-sister duo are: keep fine furniture out of direct sunlight and don’t use spray wax every time you dust. To enhance their own product line, the Duckloes carry a few other manufacturers – like Arts & Crafts furniture from Stickley and hand-tied, all-cotton mattresses from Shifman. They select only high-quality products, and favor American manufacturers and American materials. Another artisan, Gregg Perry, supplies hand-crafted new and restored furniture and grandfather clocks. A superb example is the tall timepiece in one corner of the display room, originally commissioned by Ben Franklin for two French balloonists, early experimenters with manned flight. This magnificent antique combines classic clock-making with historic importance – and is priced just under $18,000. Duckloe has donated items to TV’s Extreme Makeover: Home Edition, and provided furniture for public dining rooms at Skytop Lodge, Pocono Manor, New York’s historic Fraunces Tavern and City Tavern in Philadelphia. Pride of ownership radiates from the current proprietors, as they continue to nurture and grow the family business. When Executive Director Joe Munson established the Sylvan Learning Center of Monroe and Pike Counties 10 years ago, the academic needs of students were the main priority. Today, with the valued skills of his daughter, Center Director Christine Estep, the licensed, private academic school continues to bridge the gap between students and parents, the school, and the learning center. Munson states, “Schools appreciate the guidance Sylvan offers their students, recognizing that the educational services Sylvan provides are necessary and noncompetitive and the learning skills attained are a tremendous source of enrichment.” Parents first approach the center to acquire a Sylvan Assessment of Math and Reading Skills for their child at a nominal fee of $99. An enrollment conference is then scheduled to review their child’s skill gaps. During the conference, the parents and staff also discuss Sylvan’s prescription for addressing the needs detected during the assessment. For the Sylvan Academic Reading and Sylvan Math essentials programs, the center guarantees that the student will improve at least one grade level based on the Skills assessment test from where they were tested at (not what grade they are in school) in one of the two interest areas. In Reading, the areas are Vocabulary or Comprehension. In Math, it's Computation or Concepts and Applications. Estep proudly states, “Last year 90% of our students even advanced 2-3 grade levels!” The learning center’s teachers are not only Pennsylvania State Certified but must also excel within Sylvan’s own certification process. Under the guidance of the Director of Education, Kristen Kojeszewski, Sylvan’s faculty operates with a student to teacher ratio of three to one, ensuring each child receives adequate instruction, customized to fulfill the developed enrichment plan.

There is no doubt about it, the Poconos tune in when Bob Matthews gives the news. His clear and unique voice is one that listeners of WVPO/WSBG have been familiar with for nearly 27 years. Though his voice is now easily recognizable on the radio, his love of sports initially sparked his original interest in the communications world. After being mentored by former Easton Express newspaper sports editors Gene Beckner and Ed Laubach, Bob enrolled at Northampton Community College and focused on English and Journalism, but fell in love with broadcasting after he was given an opportunity to host a NCC radio show. He later transferred to Kings College and continued his pursuit of launching into broadcasting. Following an internship at WBQW in Scranton, Matthews worked part-time at WEEX in Easton, before making the full-time move to Stroudsburg’s 840 & 960 WVPO-AM/93.5 WSBG-FM in late October of 1983. Matthews’ experiences at WVPO/WSBG have been very rewarding. Although the station’s news and sports department has been recognized statewide and nationally for its outstanding achievements, his greatest experiences involve the people he’s worked with, and the prevailing familyatmosphere at the radio station. Bob says, “I’ve worked with some of the most amazing people on the planet, and we’ve shared so many good times, I’ve lost count. My past and present co-workers (and bosses) have helped make these last 27 years the most remarkable time of my life.” His love for the station transcends into the community, and again, it boils down to the people. “The area has changed in many ways during my 27 years at WVPO/WSBG, but so many residents and business owners in the Pocono community have not. They remain focused on what’s most important -- taking care of each other, their neighbors and those less fortunate.” You can currently hear Bob Matthews each weekday morning on WVPO/WSBG, Friday nights broadcasting high school football, and Saturday afternoons at ESU’s Eiler-Martin Stadium.

In an era when female singer-songwriters are ever more ubiquitous, Shawn Colvin stands out as a singular and enduring talent. Her songs are slow-release works of craft and catharsis that become treasured, lifetime companions for their listeners. As a storyteller, Colvin is both keen and warm-hearted, leavening even the toughest tales with tenderness, empathy, and a searing sense of humor. In the 19 years since the release of her debut album, Colvin has won three Grammy Awards, released eight albums, maintained a non-stop national and international touring schedule, appeared on countless television and radio programs, had her songs featured in major motion pictures, and created a remarkable canon of work. Combined sales of her albums total more than 2.5 million copies in the United States alone, and Colvin continues to perform at least 50–60 shows a year. Over the years she has shared the stage and toured with legendary artists such as Jackson Browne, Bonnie Raitt, Bruce Hornsby, Emmylou Harris, and Lyle Lovett. She has toured internationally throughout her career, returning to places as near as the UK and Europe as far as Asia, Australia, and New Zealand. She was honored to perform with David Broza and Jackson Browne in a very special sunrise concert at the base of the 2000-year-old fortress of Masada in Southern Israel, overlooking the Dead Sea. The concert was broadcast on PBS stations throughout the U.S. in the late fall of 2007 and in early 2008. Colvin was born in Vermillion, South Dakota, where she lived until she was eight. A small-town childhood in the university town of Carbondale, Illinois, drew her to the guitar by the age of 10. She made her first public appearance on campus at the University of Illinois at age 15. By the late 1970s Colvin was singing in a Western Swing band in Austin, Texas—the city she now calls home. Moving to New York at the decade’s end she remained in the country music field as a member of the Buddy Miller Band until she met producer, guitarist, and co-writer John

Leventhal. Leventhal inspired Colvin to find her own voice as a songwriter. She began honing her skill, and was soon signed to Columbia records. Her first album, Steady On, won a Grammy Award for Best Contemporary Folk Recording. Colvin continued to win fans and critics with her subsequent releases, Fat City (1992) and Cover Girl (1994). In 1996, she released A Few Small Repairs (1996), which would prove to be her breakthrough. The murder-ballad “Sunny Came Home” gave Colvin a Top 10 hit and two of Grammy’s biggest honors: Record of the Year and Song of the Year. Holiday Songs And Lullabies (1998), recorded while Colvin was eight and a half months pregnant with her daughter Caledonia, followed by Whole New You (2001) and Polaroids (2004). Her Nonesuch debut These Four Walls (2006) was lauded by People Magazine as “the most self-assured album of her career” and “one for the ages” by The Washington Post. The Austin-American Statesman called it “an exquisite portrait of strength and vulnerability.” Colvin’s newest release, Shawn Colvin Live (2009), was recorded in 2008 during a special three-night solo engagement at San Francisco’s famous jazz club, Yoshi’s. Live includes 12 songs written or co-written by Colvin, as well as covers of songs by Robbie Robertson, Gnarls Barkley, and the Talking Heads. The record was co-produced by Colvin and John Leventhal. Shawn Colvin Live captures the beauty and intimacy of Colvin’s performances, showcasing her inimitable voice and matchless guitar stylings. Relaxing... Freaking out, up tight, on edge, frazzled—any way you look at it, stress is a common occurrence in our lives. From our troubled economy to our every day troubles at home and work, it seems lately that we are in a constant state of stress. Science tells us that when outside stress is applied to any system, the system must undergo some change to accommodate for the stress; our bodies are no exception to this rule. We have all felt the effects of our innate “fight or flight” response, a biological reaction to acute stress that creates an automatic release of adrenaline. “Fight or flight” is typically a transient state; once the stressor is removed, so is the stress. However, ground-breaking research conducted by the late Dr. Hans Selye found that the hormonal influx caused by prolonged periods of stress can take an enormous toll on the body, including increasing the risk of cardiovascular disease, headaches, insomnia, impaired immune system, gastrointestinal disorders, and behavioral problems such as tobacco, alcohol, and/or substance abuse. Recognizing that stress plays such a pivotal role in the disease process, the medical community has responded with conservative treatment, usually therapy or prescription medication. In recent years, there has been a movement to apply newer, non-traditional therapies and treatments for stress management: Complementary Alternative Medicine, also referred to as CAM. Jill Howell, MA, ATR, Medical Art Therapist at Pocono Medical Center is a holistic practitioner and coordinates the CAM program at Pocono Medical Center. Jill explains that managing stress is just as integral to wellness as managing to eat a healthy, balanced diet and implementing an exercise or physical activity plan. “It is incredibly important to check in with yourself on a daily basis to see if you are experiencing overwhelming feelings of sadness, worry, frustration, or anger. These feelings, if left unchecked, may lead to chronic stress. Your daily dose of stress management can range from taking five minutes for yourself to allocating one half-hour or an hour to really indulging in something you enjoy,” Howell says. One treatment Howell describes includes taking pen to paper and creating an image of your stressor and then

scribbling all over it – really letting your feelings out on the paper – and then ripping it up. This helps to have a mental and physical release of the stressor. Creating a soothing image that helps calm and distract you can follow up this process. Another form of art therapy involves creating a collage. Materials include traditional art supplies – markers, glue, and construction paper - and magazines. The ‘tearing’ of the magazines to create the collage creates the physical release of stress, while the creative aspects of completing the project help with the mental release of stress. Other forms of art therapy include scrapbooking, building model airplanes, and completing a puzzle.

Howell also emphasizes the importance of proper breathing while performing a stress management activity. “Focusing on your breath is the most important tool for coping with stress. Take a moment to distract yourself from the stressor(s) by visualizing a mini-vacation or a calming image or painting.” Sometimes just by breathing slowly and deeply for several minutes, our body will calm itself down. Of course, eliminating your stressor(s) should always be the goal, but often once a source of stress is gone, it’s not too long before another one will surface. So finding a healthy style of managing stress is a vital life skill. In addition to the techniques mentioned here, you may have others that work best for you, such as jogging, talking with a friend, or relaxing in a bubble bath. Get to know your stress limitations and prioritize making time to take care of yourself. Remember that you are in control of your wellness. n

Mother and daughter team, Dianne Possinger and Bridgette Philips, pride their success upon the loyal and highly trained staff they consider an extension of their family. Hair Excellence opened its doors in 1980 after completing renovations on a home Possinger considers “reclaimed” as it had been built by her father’s great aunt several years beforehand. The architectural integrity of the structure enabled renovations to include private rooms that could accommodate varying style procedures. As educators and members of the National Cosmetology Association, Possinger and Philips remain committed to their motto of “excellence through education” by sharing their skills with their staff. State of the art techniques attained through a compellation of educational components continue to launch the salon to the forefront of the latest styles and trends their clientele crave. Excitement fills the air as Possinger describes new and innovative procedures such as the Dry Slip Cut, a procedure that utilizes shears to vertically texturize dry hair. She goes on to describe a revolutionary hair straightening process the salon is using called the Keratin Smoothing System. Possinger

For the last two years Philips has been responsible for the growth and development of the salon while Possinger continues to flourish as the shop matriarch, offering input from experience. Philips envisions that the business will remain an individual, elegant salon that caters to one’s personal needs as opposed to its franchised competitors where it’s simply business. The mother and daughter team cherish the continued support of their family, staff and loyal clientele. "The Italian Kitchen"- the name conjures up aromas and visions that transport me to a place of love, and that sums up the Basso experience, just like you are eating at the family table. Opened this past July by Bill Pipolo Sr. and his partner (and son) Bill Pipolo Jr., Basso is a true family endeavor with hopes that the youngest generation of the Pipolo family will carry on with the operation. In fact, each letter in the restaurant’s name represents one of the six grandchildren in the Pipolo Family;

Two of the grandchildren have already been put to work at the restaurant, Billy, who is seven, works the door for two hours on Wednesday nights and Sophia, 13, works as a busser on Friday and Saturday evenings. Bill Sr.’s wife, Fabiana, creates all of the desserts while daughter-in-law, Kim, is the Executive Host and keeps the place running smoothly. When asked about why he chose to open Basso Pipolo’s answer was simple, “I have wanted a restaurant for quite some time, but it had to be the right concept, and it had to be a place that would become a legacy for our family to continue to build on our traditions for many years.” Bill Pipolo Jr.’s main focus was in the restoration of the building. Formerly Harrison’s Bar, the establishment needed more than just cosmetic work. The family wanted to maintain the building’s integrity but redesign it in a way that would transport you to a mountain village in Italy. The entire process took a little over a year and the final result is pretty spectacular. What was once an eye sore to the community has now become an asset. Pipolo’s original idea for the restaurant was not that of a fine dining Italian establishment. Quite honestly, the only Italian food (besides his wife Fabiana’s) Pipolo Sr. would ever eat was from Gracie’s Place in East Stroudsburg, which was open from 1993-95. Gracie had retired after having opened several successful restaurants throughout the area, but Pipolo Sr. and Gracie became so close that he somehow twisted her arm and she decided to come out of retirement to become the Executive Chef of Basso. Gracie’s rustic, authentic style of cooking stems from all regions of Italy, from Naples to Tuscany and Sicily, but interestingly enough, she didn’t get her start as a chef. Gracie got her start as a coat check girl in a club - but not in just any club. Gracie worked in Frank Sinatra’s club and when asked to cook a personal meal for “Old Blue Eyes” himself, how could she refuse? After that one meal she became Sinatra’s personal chef from 1980- 1982, and her career was born. Gracie's philosophy is simple, no boring food. “I don’t take short-cuts in any part of the meal,” Gracie explained. From the side vegetables to the sausage picked up from Brooklyn, only the best ingredients are used to prepare your meal at Basso. I had the Surf & Turf and was blown away by the beauty of the food, the flavors, and the portion size! The Pipolo family and both chef’s - Gracie and her protege - George Gerhart, formerly of Alaska Pete’s - have gone to great lengths to ensure that every diner feels as though they are eating at the family table, and no one ever leaves the table still hungry.
