LETTER from the

ED I TO R

Don’t know about you... but, my family and I had a great summer. It was the first time in so many years that I actually felt like I relaxed. We hiked, we swam, we ate and we spent time with so many great people. For the first time in a while, I said “no” to things that I knew would not bring me joy. It’s interesting how much space the word no creates. As I type this, I’m three weeks from my 46th birthday and I feel like I may be finally learning a few things. With the fall around the corner and school ready to begin, I am looking forward to diving in to the change the seasons bring. I hope you get out and about to all of the end of season festivals and soak up the beauty The Pocono Mountains have to share this time of year.

See you again in October. Keep it local!

give 2018 Butterfly release for peace Women’s Resources of Monroe County (WRMC) will celebrate life, hope and healing, and remember victims and survivors of domestic abuse with the release of beautiful Monarch butterflies. This annual event, now eight years running, is designed to raise awareness of the organization’s vision to end domestic and sexual violence for all women, children and men in our community. The release will take place on Wednesday, September 12, 2018, at 5:30 p.m. at the Weiler Corporation, located at Routes 191/390, Cresco, PA. In the event of rain, the event will take place the next day, Thursday, September 13th at the same time and location. Monarch butterflies, seemingly fragile but extremely strong, are a perfect representation of our clients. They are a symbol of change, freedom and joy, possessing the ability to leave the safety of their cocoon, to grow, transform and discover the world in new ways. People come to us frightened and confused, but after experiencing our safe haven, counseling and educational opportunities, they leave with confidence and stability, hopeful and ready to begin a new and independent life. The event is free to attend and butterflies can be purchased for $15.00 each. The deadline for ordering butterflies is August 17th. There are also sponsorship opportunities which will help defray costs to host this important awareness event. Sponsors and tributes in honor and in memory of a loved one will appear in the program.

Women’s Resources of Monroe County Mission Statement: To provide a safe and caring environment that encourages healing and empowerment for anyone whose life has been impacted by domestic and sexual violence. We strive to engage our community through awareness, advocacy, and prevention.

You may purchase your butterfly or become a sponsor online at www.wrmonroe.org, or you can send a check payable to Women’s Resources of Monroe County, ATTN Butterfly Release, PO Box 645, Delaware Water Gap, PA 18327 10

ART

Interested. Awake. Perfect. Cynical.

the art of Albert shivers By Kevin Conroy

Anyone choosing to make art the sole endeavor of their life must be these things. An artist living on wits must fuse hard work with an ability to render the human form with perfection, and do that with originality of approach; it requires intellectual engagement. Where Albert Shivers livelihood in the arts is going can’t be predicted. “As a volcano that erupts to form an island,” he says, “I am open to new style.” Shivers’ illustrations often lean on a Depression-era world of jazz, depicting singers and musicians with near photorealism; he then sees emotion into the images with intense ink improvisation. “Donegan” demonstrates this, presenting an element of darkness without being oppressive; the looker manifests meaning. There is another side to Shivers work, another half in the form of collage: orgies of surreal movement and what he aptly calls “Psycho-Realism.” Deftly cut from vintage black-andwhite magazines, the images used are original 1920’s, 30’s and 40’s Hollywood arranged to tell of a crazed reality playful, entertaining, complex. “Dark World” expresses the urbane, while “Wedding of the Century” boils frenetic sensuality. Although Albert Shivers is a graduate of the East Stroudsburg University Arts Program, he has been creative since early childhood, and labored for years under a draconian high school arts teacher to develop his ability for eye and hand to see

12

and re-create, to develop, to nurture, fondle, improve, and make accurate his work. Take time to examine “Miles.” That teacher’s ethics are part of his makeup now, and Shivers took the initiative to contact and express gratitude to the woman who held her art students at near-impossible standards. Inspiration often comes from the mature, or rather, passed world of historical photos, crumbling magazines, vintage movies, black and white TV, comic books, and, especially, old music. To collect these images from out-of-the-way shops, to harvest and sort and file them takes time and labor. He ignores nature in favor of the urban, and composes with insight that belies his youth. Shivers also collaborates on film with fellow artist Jennifer Fish. Their production company Shivering Fish creates shorts including the elegy “Last Words,” and a semi-autobiographic called “The Healer” (both available on YouTube), expressing their sensibility in sound and moving imagery. Eleven pieces of Albert Shivers are on display at Gamut Art Gallery, 109 N 8th St, Stroudsburg, PA, and will remain on view until August 30th. To view several of Shary’s canvases, go to Saatchiart.com and search for Shary Maloney, where you will find displayed twenty or more of her works. Viewing her range, it is probable Shary Maloney has merely begun her creative circlet, and will captivate sophisticates and art amateurs alike for many canvases to come.

POV

Field of Dreams Photo Essay by Kelly Klee

I do my best thinking when I’m driving alone. Add a golden glow summer sunset draped over rows of emerald green cornstalks - and this is where inspiration begins. I noticed a tractor resting in the cornfield along Route 209 in Brodheadsville a while ago, so I pulled over - like I always do when I see something I feel compelled to photograph. I made my way through thick, fertile ground in my chunky heels and sundress ( I didn’t expect to go shooting that day) and began taking pictures of this awesome machine when the cab door opened and a man’s face appeared, smiling. He politely said hello to me and I asked him if I could take a few photos of him working in the field. He was very receptive to my request so I took some shots. Meeting people and photographing them is my passion. To me, listening to their stories and capturing them in their element, is one of the purest forms of human connection. He said his name was Bill Altemose and he and his family have been farming this land for decades. He told me of their recent barn fire and I could see his eyes shift to sadness. I could feel the devastation of his experience and the weight of emotion his words carried. As the golden light played across the field, I realized I met a very genuine person who was grateful I stopped to chat, if even for a few minutes. His lighthearted demeanor was refreshing and his Pennsylvania Dutch accent reminded me of my late Stepmother who grew up a few towns over from where Billy and I were talking. My conversation with Billy was short, but meaningful. It reminded me how taking time out of a busy life to talk with someone can enrich your life. A few words, a couple laughs can bring new perspective to anyone’s day. I’ve met many interesting people on my impromptu road trips with my camera. I never know who I’ll meet and I always hope for the best. I’m pretty sure I encountered a true gem when I crossed paths with Mr. Altemose on that sunny Sunday. -Kelly

The entire family will enjoy a day in the country, strolling through the colorful tents and grounds at the farm. The Pocono State Craft Festival at the Quiet Valley Living Historical Farm is located just outside Stroudsburg, Pennsylvania, less than two hours from the New York City Metropolitan area, less than an hour from the Scranton/ Wilkes-Barre region and within a half an hour of the Lehigh Valley. Festival hours are 10am-5pm on both Saturday and Sunday, rain or shine. Admission is $6.00 for adults; children 12 and under are admitted free. Parking is free. Quiet Valley is a working farm and requests no pets and no smoking. Beauty from dedication.

By Kevin Conroy

Jennifer McAtee worked and studied ten years before she and her husband Bryan purchased the land to start Holy Cow Farm. The property had once been a Hindu cow sanctuary where rescued bovines were taken to live out their lives in peace. “We had been trying to come up with a farm name for years, and hoped that when we found our property the name would be evident,” Jenn says with a smile. “Turns out it was!” At holy Cow Farm Jenn specializes in growing flowers. At first, she grew half vegetables and half flowers, but being a one-woman farm Jennifer knew she had to specialize in one thing instead of overextending. “There are so many people growing beautiful veggies in this area,” she says. “I saw an opportunity in growing local flowers.” “I knew I wanted to be a farmer by the time I was a junior in college,” Jenn says, standing in the large greenhouse built by husband Bryan. Currently, the greenhouse holds celosia, calendula, and asters seedlings. Jenn sprouts all her seeds in the greenhouse. “I am always planting!” she says. At Lafayette College, Jenn developed a two-acre farm to grow vegetables for campus dining, then began Lafayette’s community garden for faculty and students. “I studied geology, but upon starting the Lafayette [farm] project I fell in love with farming.” After graduation, she continued to manage the venture. “It’s still an awesome, growing program,” she says. After her experience at Lafayette, Jenn attended The Seed Farm, a training facility in Emmaus, PA, where new farmers receive hands-on training in all aspects of running an agricultural enterprise, from sustainable growing methods and equipment operation to critical business skills and marketing. With no farming background in her family, it was necessary for Jenn to study as hard as she did, attending additional Penn State Extension seminars and night classes. Jenn then took all her training to Calgary, Canada, where she undertook the responsibilities of manager on a working farm. “It was a steep learning curve,” she says of that year. During much of this time Jennifer and Bryan had been searching for a property to call their own, and in 2016 they finally found it. Jennifer puts all her learning to work on this one-woman farm. “As a first-generation farmer, I would not be able to be where I am today without it.” Jenn looks closely at a red sunflower harboring several bees. “There are many benefits to growing flowers,” she says. “It’s peaceful, provides food for pollinators, and has a low carbon footprint.” Jennifer finds it important to use non-chemical methods in her work, and feeds the soil with natural compost. “I don’t want to spend my days around chemicals, and I want to feel good about the healthy products we sell to our customers. “The way I see it, when you buy our flowers you support clean soil and water, and when you buy locally as well, that hits closer to home.” Visit Holy Cow Farm at the Monroe Farmers Market in Stroudsburg, Pennsylvania every Saturday 8am to Noon, through October. Follow them on Facebook for updates.

LIVING

Deborah Sinatra, owner of Deborah Sinatra Interiors, has been transforming homes throughout the PoconosMountains and beyond for over 20 years. Her ability to see an interior for it’s potential and create the spaces of her clients’ dreams has been the backbone of her business. With the help of Ye Olde Village Workshop in Mountainhome, they took a blank camvas and turned it in to a wine cellar any Connoisuer would dream of. She walked us through the before and after process.

Words By Deborah Sinatra Photos by Ali Schratt

“When my clients purchased their home in November 2016, one of the first items on their wish list was to add a wine cellar in the existing basement. As avid collectors of international and rare wines, proper storage and tasting space was a priority in their plans. That, along with a small sink, small fridge a wine cooler and a tasting table were basically their needs for function. Before I could get to the design, there were several “behind the walls” challenges to overcome, it was after all, a basement. Fortunately, all of the HVAC and household mechanics were situated at one end, so none of that had to be reconfigured. We decided to divide the basement in half, which would allow an ample amount of space for the new wine room and the other for mechanicals and storage. Because there was a moisture issue, we insulated the exterior cinder block walls and planned on installing the sheetrock and cabinetry four inches from them, creating a space of air flow to “breathe”. Installing a small fan at one end, and a dehumidifier at the other with neither being visible, corrected the problem and eliminated any chance of mildew growth.

30

The ceiling contained duct work which we boxed in and then installed a plank drop ceiling. For reduced maintenance and durability, I selected a wide vinyl plank flooring. The actual wine cabinets were meticulously fabricated of clear cherry by Bill Fisher of Ye Olde Village Workshop in Mountainhome. All of the cabinets were custom sized, including a nook big enough to house a Methuselah of champagne....not a Magnum, a Methuselah, which is a 6 liter bottle of champagne that stands close to two feet tall. Two glass front cabinets reveal various styles of stemware each one suitable for different types of wine. Countertops are granite, as is the backsplash behind the sink that stretches to the ceiling. Leather clad, adjustable height bar stools surround a counter height tasting table made of rustic wood beams with an iron base. Finally, ceiling lights subtly illuminate the fronts of the cabinets and dimmable pendants add just the right atmosphere over the tasting table. From celebratory birthday dinners with Chef Nicola, to quiet evenings with friends and family, this wine cellar has become a favorite space for my clients to unwind, relax and entertain.”

Nestled on 6.9 acres two miles the Pocono Mountain School District, sits a masterpiece of design. When you drive through a custom gate built by artisan Jim which leads to the 30 foot Koi pond and turrest entrance - you get the feeling the owner’s appreciate art and design. Bill and Joyce Raczko settled in the area after leaving New York and their careers in Architecture and Marketing behind. As a prominent Architect in the city, Bill had the task of renovating MOMA and you’ll find pieces from his life and work placed perfectly throughout the home. A stone from the Broklyn Botanical Gardens built in to the firepace, the fireplace in the “cozy” room is from Andrew Carnegie’s daughters house, lights from the Rockefeller Mansion- and so many other touches add to the ecclectic and creative mountain space. “I read a Frank lloyd Wright interview and he said “ I design houses that GRACE the land - not DISGRACE the land” , and that was my philosophy when we began thinking of this house,” explained Bill. The grand room is a nod to the dining room of the French MAnor in South Sterling, but, everything else was built to bring the outside in. Floor to ceiling windows open up to the wooded outdoors which has 1,180 feet of trout stream of the Swiftwater Creek running through it. There is a Bcce Court, regularion horseshoe pit and a classic Pocono heart-shaped tub, which the couple won at auction and turned in to a jacuzzi, built into the deck. There are three large bedrooms - one to accomodate the grandchildren has built-in beds and is located right down the hall from the fireman’s pole! The house is the epitome of the Pocono lifestyle and would a perfect fit as a family home or a summer retreat.

LOCAL HEALTH

Q & A WITH METABOLIC AND BARIATRIC SURGEON: DR. T. JAVIER BIRRIEL, M.D.

DR. T. JAVIER BIRRIEL, M.D.

IS A BOARD CERTIFIED GENERAL SURGEON, AND AS A METABOLIC AND BARIATRIC SURGEON. HE SPECIALIZES IN MINIMALLY EVASIVE LAPAROSCOPIC SLEEVE GASTRECTOMY, LAPAROSCOPIC GASTRIC BYPASS, REVISIONAL BARIATRIC SURGERY, AND FOREGUT SURGERY SUCH AS HIATAL HERNIA REPAIR, SURGERY FOR GASTROESOPHAGEAL REFLUX (GERD), FOR PEPTIC ULCER DISEASE AND FOR ACHALASIA.

LF: Who is the ideal candidate for bariatric surgery?

Dr. Birriel: Patients are considered for bariatric surgery based on their Body Mass Index or BMI. A BMI of 30 or above is classified as obesity. Currently, patients qualify for surgery with a BMI of 35-39.9 with an obesity related disease or co-morbidity OR a BMI of 40 or above alone. It is difficult to say what an ideal candidate is, but the earlier in life that a person is able to experience the improvements on their health after surgery the better.

LF: What does the preparation leading up to the surgery look like?

Dr. Birriel Metabolic & bariatric surgery is not the “easy way out” that many believe it to be. Prior to undergoing surgery, our patients undergo a structured process to ensure complete preparation for the peri-operative course and to ensure surgery is as safe as possible. We require attendance at an informational seminar where I discuss obesity and its related diseases as well as the surgeries that we offer. Patients will also attend a support group where they can interact and ask questions from staff and patients who have already undergone surgery and can share their experiences. In addition to these meetings, we require cardiology, sleep medicine, nutrition, and psychology evaluations preoperatively. This process is directed through our weight management center.

LF: What are the most significant changes you have noticed over the past 10 years regarding these health issues? Dr. Birriel: At St. Luke’s Weight Management Center, we are fellowship trained laparoscopic and bariatric surgeons. Two of the main surgeries that we perform are the sleeve gastrectomy and the Roux-en-Y gastric bypass. We perform our bariatric surgeries laparoscopically or in a minimally invasive fashion. Both of the surgeries are 1-2 hours long, and the recoveries are the same. Patients stay overnight after surgery with most going home the very next morning. Within a few hours after surgery at our center, patients have their pain controlled, are walking the hallways, and are drinking fluids. We have a streamlined, enhanced recovery process that allows for an improved postoperative experience for our patients.

those that did not. So, overall, there are numerous benefits to surgery, and the #1 goal is to improve a patient’s health and give them a second chance to life.

LF: How much weight can a patient expect to lose? Dr. Birriel: The maximum or expected weight loss after surgery can vary greatly amongst patients based on multiple factors such as preoperative weight, activity level or dietary habits and compliance. On average, a patient can expect around 8-10 points off of their BMI for a sleeve gastrectomy and 10-12 points after a gastric bypass.

LF: Can you give us some examples of maintenance meal and diet plans? Dr. Birriel: After surgery, our patients advance their diets step-wise from liquids to solids. Our team of dietitians works very closely with them on a specific meal plan and may make adjustments based on their medical history. All patients will supplement with a daily multivitamin in addition to the required amount of fluids to hydrate and other nutritional parameters to follow as directed

LF: What other health benefits can a patient expect or hope for after the surgery? Dr. Birriel: Obesity is at an all-time epidemic. Over 1/3 of the adults in the USA are considered obese. What we do is not just weight loss surgery. It’s Metabolic & Bariatric Surgery. Our goal is to treat and prevent metabolic diseases related to obesity with surgery. For example, there are at least 13 different types of cancer related to obesity, and the risk for these can be decreased with weight loss. Surgery has become the most powerful tool to treat diseases or conditions such as diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, infertility related to polycystic ovarian syndrome, obstructive sleep apnea and many more. There is also an 89% decreased risk of death over 5 years in obese patients who underwent bariatric surgery versus

38

LF: What is the plan for keeping the weight off? Dr. Birriel: Our center has a full multidisciplinary staff consisting of nurses, coordinators, dietitians, licensed care social workers, PA’s, medical weight loss specialists and surgeons who are available every step of the way for our patients. Once a patient joins our practice, we like to say that they are our patient for life. We assist our patients with diet and exercise plans as well as with managing any issues that may arise postoperatively. Ensuring compliance to maximize their health benefits and outcomes with multiple first year visits and eventual annual visits is very important to us.

LF: Tell us about a patient or two that inspired you with their transformation Dr. Birriel: There are so many examples. I have lots of stories of patients that come in initially with a Ziploc bag full of prescription medications, and after surgery they are off of most if not all of their previous medications. I’ve had patients that were wheel chair bound due to their arthritis and upon follow up months later are able to walk again and improving their mobility. Patients who couldn’t fit on amusement park rides and now they can without any issues. Parents or grandparents that couldn’t chase their children or grandchildren and now have more energy than them! This is an incredibly gratifying field to be a part of, and I love coming to work every day.

A DRAMATIC TRANSFORMATION

Cassie Enderes, a St. Luke’s Weight Management patient from Effort. Cassie lost 75 pounds thanks to weight loss surgery and dramatically improved her health. “After I was diagnosed with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) and diabetes, I decided that I didn’t want to be on medication for the rest of my life. I knew that by achieving a healthy weight, I could significantly decrease the likelihood of developing certain illnesses associated with obesity and I would improve my overall quality of life. A friend who had the gastric sleeve piqued my interest and offered me support, information and a recommendation that would change my life - she told me to go to St. Luke’s.” “By the first week, post-surgery, I lost 18 pounds and felt amazing. Ten days post op, I was cleared to start exercising and the healthy lifestyle took off from there! There were no challenges, no obstacles in my way anymore. My PCOS and diabetes were things of the past. My energy was through the roof! I love to be able to bike and play baseball with my young children and my confidence level skyrocketed. I gained a love for myself that I never thought I’d have.”

The 15th anniversary of the Pocono Mountains Community Fundraiser In all, the event has raised more than $2.5 million since its inception in 2004 for Monroe County non-profit organizations or those who service Monroe County residents. Since its inception, 34 critical area non-profit organizations have been funded, some as many as four times, and thousands of area neighbors in need have been assisted. Each year, Sanofi Pasteur pays all event costs, so that every dollar raised through ticket sales and sponsorships benefits the non-profit recipients. The recipients were chosen by the Pocono Mountains Community Fundraiser Agency Selection Committee, which is comprised of more than a dozen members of the Monroe County community. Community is one of the key Corporate Social Responsibility pillars for Sanofi, and as such, we look to give back in the communities where we live and work.
