Change Is In The Air. This last year was a year of many accomplishments and many changes at Sparrow Ionia Hospital.

We were recognized nationally as a Top Improver in Patient Satisfaction in our Ambulatory Surgery Department. In fact, we were one of 19 in the nation to receive this award.

Congratulations to our surgical staff!

We received four Michigan Rural Health Quality Improvement Awards. They were for: • Outstanding Performance in Patient Safety • Excellence in Emergency Department Transfer Performance • Excellence in Inpatient Clinical Performance • Quality Improvement in Outpatient Clinical Performance Sparrow Ionia Hospital had the highest inpatient satisfaction (HCAHPS) scores in all of the Sparrow Health System.

Sparrow Ionia Hospital had the highest percentage of caregivers donate to the Sparrow Foundation Everyday Hero Campaign. The donations from our caregivers come back to the Sparrow Ionia Hospital Foundation and are managed locally by our Foundation Board.

With the success of the WalkIn Care Clinic, we added another Family Physician, Dr. John Cegielski and Physician Assistant, Laura Kozachik to our caregivers providing medical services. In January 2012, we expanded the Walk-In Care Clinic hours to include early evening hours and Saturday mornings.

With the financial support of the Lafayette Guild, we were able to remodel the Patient Day Room into a comfortable and inviting room for our patients and their families.

Another Year of Change.

In January, Sparrow Hospitalists started providing 24 hour hospitalist care at Sparrow Ionia Hospital.

In February, we opened the Sparrow Ionia Specialist Clinic at 848 E. Lincoln Ave, Ionia. This clinic helped expand our visiting specialist clinics. We recently added two specialists to our medical staff, Cara Leahy, MD, Neurologist and Ryan Miyamoto, MD, Urologist. In June, Lansing OB/GYN began providing care for patients in Ionia County, and in August a new family physician, Zuhair Abualrihy will start his practice in Ionia.

In May, we began installing iSparrow, our new electronic medical record system in our Physician offices. iSparrow will provide a secure internet–based portal for patients that will allow direct access to medical history, including lab and x-ray results. Your doctor will have immediate access to prior treatments and health information during your visit.

Electronic Medical Records are safer, faster, more convenient, with greater continuity of care for you. In December, iSparrow will be implemented throughout the Sparrow Health System including Sparrow Ionia Hospital, which will make all sites accessible with state of the art EMR. We are very excited about the affiliation with Mayo Clinic Care Network. Through this collaboration, Sparrow Ionia Physicians will have access to the latest Mayo Clinic expertise and clinical care resources to help care for patients in Ionia.

Digital mammography was installed at Sparrow Ionia Hospital this past spring. One more way we will provide you excellent healthcare right here, right in Ionia.

We are proud of the changes taking place at Sparrow Ionia Hospital and thank you for your support through it all. And last but not least we hope to announce later this year details about the Sparrow Ionia Hospital replacement plans.

We now have a Cardiologist at Sparrow Ionia Hospital 5 days a week to serve our patients.

Our Medical Weight Management Program which began last fall has been a great success and we are looking forward to it growing more this next year.

Emergency Services

iSparrow Electronic Medical Records

Sparrow Ionia Hospital's full service emergency department is open 24 hours a day, 365 days a year with Emergency Medicine trained physicians treating serious injuries and dangerous symptoms. Specially trained staff is available to provide high quality care when you need it the most. Ionia County residents have access to the level of emergency services — expertise available at a level-one trauma center — without having to travel to Lansing or Grand Rapids.

Starting in May, Sparrow Ionia Hospital and the Physician practices, Tony Balice Clinics, Ionia and the Family Health Center Portland will be launching iSparrow, our new Electronic Medical Record (EMR) system. December 1st, all of Sparrow Hospitals will go live with iSparrow.

Emergency Medical Associates, PLLC (EMA) and Sparrow Health System partnered with Sparrow Ionia Hospital to provide the physicians for the Emergency Department in Ionia. The EMA physicians also provide their services to the two emergency departments located in Lansing — Sparrow Hospital and St. Lawrence Hospital.

Critically ill and injured patients throughout Ionia County and surrounding communities greatly benefit from Sparrow’s partnership with LifeNet of Michigan, a community based air medical transport service. When time is of the essence, this fully equipped “ER in the sky” provides intensive care while safely speeding you or your loved one to the mid-Michigan region’s Level 1 Trauma Center.

No matter where you are in Mid-Michigan, you are never far from great emergency care.

Hospitalist Services Sparrow Ionia Hospital provides dedicated physician care for in-patients 24 hours a day.

The Sparrow Hospitalist team works closely with you and your personal physician to coordinate the very best medical care during your hospitalization and during your transition from the hospital. Hospitalists are specialists who only provide care to patients who require care in the hospital.

Benefits to you: Faster: You will get prescriptions, lab and x-ray results and referrals faster. Your doctor will have immediate access to prior treatments and comprehensive health information during your visit.

Safer: Your safety will be enhanced as the EMR is implemented through Sparrow. Your physicians will have access to your comprehensive medical history including information such as test results, treatment plans, and your medication history. Medication conflicts, allergies, side effects and abnormal test results will be flagged by the system.

Better Communication: We will soon be introducing “MySparrow”, a secure internet-based portal for Patients, age 18 and older, that will allow you direct access to your medical history, including tests and lab results.

More Convenient: With “MySparrow” you’ll be able to schedule appointments and send messages to your doctor, online, 24-hours-a-day from the comfort and convenience of home.

Laboratory Services

When patients undergo surgery, a team of trained and dedicated medical staff assist the surgeon. Certified anesthesiologists, specialized operating room nurses and technicians monitor the surgical procedure and the patient’s health and safety during the entire operation.

Sparrow Ionia Hospital, under the direction of Sparrow Laboratory Services has a full service laboratory that offers testing including: Hematology, Urinalysis, Microbiology, Chemistry, Special Chemistries, Blood Gases, Coagulation, and Blood Transfusion services.

The Surgical Department at Sparrow Ionia Hospital is patient focused to ensure the continuity of your care from the physician’s office through discharge from the hospital and with the support of community services when appropriate. We offer a full-spectrum of general surgery procedures.

Sparrow Ionia Laboratory offers laboratory services to area physician offices and local nursing homes including specimen collection, transporting, testing, and computer access to laboratory results.

Refresh your Body & Mind The Sleep Diagnostic studies at Sparrow Ionia Hospital, are designed to identify disorders that prevent you from getting restful sleep. The staff is specially trained in sleep medicine and assisted by registered polysomnographic technologists who monitor you while you sleep with stateof-the-art diagnostic equipment. Digital Mammography The most advanced diagnostic tool in the fight against breast cancer – full-field digital mammography is now available at Sparrow Ionia Hospital.

Patients will not notice a significant difference in the exam itself, but will benefit greatly from the digital image at a reduced radiation exposure. The radiologist interpreting the detailed image will actually notice the biggest change. The physician will have the opportunity to manipulate and utilize this new technology to its fullest advantage.
