With her revolutionary approach to weight loss, local Hungry Heart counselor Lauren Grant is helping her clients shed pounds and inches permanently— just by changing the way they think about food.

Here is Her remarkable approacH to emotional over-eating... If you are one of the millions of Americans who try to lose weight each year— and fail— the Hungry Heart owner Lauren Grant wants you to know the solution could be locked in your brain.

says. The Hungry Heart helps its clients handle their emotions independently of the food.

Hypnosis helps us to get out of our own way so that we can efficiently achieve our goals.”

It’s not a diet, she notes, instead, it’s about changing one’s mindset. Hypnotherapy, behavior modification, and nutritional counseling work together to help you lose the weight—and keep it off.

“All hypnosis is self-hypnosis,” Lauren mentions. “You cannot be made to do anything that is not a part of your personal value system. The only things I can suggest during hypnotherapy are the things that you truly want to do.”

“I struggled for years gaining and losing the same weight over and over again,” Lauren shares. “I had tried every diet in the book, and struggled with stress eating and yoyo dieting for years. I didn’t have a program like Hungry Heart to help me. If I would have, I know I could have achieved my goals a lot easier. It has now been over sixteen years that I’ve kept the weight off.”

“We do an initial one-on-one consultation with questions and answers, then decide how to put a plan in place,” she says. “Everyone is different and determining what type of changes need to be made are unique to the individual.”

“I consult with emotional over-eaters, yo-yo dieters, binge eaters and people who are constantly making poor food choices,” she says. “What I share with my clients is that we have to change our thinking before we can be permanently successful at losing weight.” Most people try a diet, do well, and then gain the weight back, Lauren

What i share with my clients is that we have to change our thinking before we can be successful at losing weight. The hypnotherapy portion of the program, she points out, “is very effective in helping us to work with ourselves rather than against ourselves. Most of us know what we want to do but for some reason we are not doing it.

She likens the feeling of being hypnotized to driving a route you’ve traveled hundreds of times. “After awhile, your subconscious takes over. You might even miss your exit on the freeway, but you know that you are driving and could stop if the car in front of you stops.” “Sessions are conducted on an individual basis, so we can personalize them to your own core issues,” Lauren says. “The privacy of personal sessions allows clients to get comfortable and get their mind in the state it needs to be in.” “We focus on two things,” she describes. “First we find out how to help them discover what their motivations are for eating when they aren’t hungry. Then we replace eating behavior with something that serves them better.”

The nutritional counseling buffers the hypnotherapy by helping clients learn how to shop for the right foods. Part of The Hungry Heart program also includes suggestions for exercise. Incremental changes are best,” she says. “We don’t just refer everyone to a big gym. This is about having our clients come out of the program with a better quality of life, having made healthy decisions because they want to, not because they’re supposed to.” Lauren shares that with her program, 85% of clients will stop overeating in the first two or three sessions.

APRIL 2010: MATT VICELJA, Publisher Hello Laguna Beach and welcome to The Local DISH Magazine! We are excited to introduce you to our monthly publication that has featured local events, music, restaurants and businesses in and around your community since 2007. I understand your lives are busy, so we have thoughtfully designed our magazine to provide quick and light editorial content, a local dining guide, relevant advertisements and promotions along with our renowned calendar of events. We strive to provide you with a timely and useful snapshot of what’s happening in your own backyard and will continue to serve up the dish to the communities of Dana Point, Laguna Niguel, San Clemente, San Juan Capistrano and now for the first time...to Laguna Beach! Laguna Beach holds such fond memories for me. As the youngest child of five raised in Los Angeles, I was first introduced to the city back in ‘78. My mom and dad came up with the brilliant idea of occasionally taking each child, sans siblings, on a weekend getaway in order to spend quality, one-on-one time together. I was fortunate enough to enjoy a two-night stay in Laguna at an amazing resort with its own indoor pool – the first I’d ever seen. Laguna Riviera Motel still sits right there on PCH...the way I remember it as a nine-year old boy. I smile every time I drive by. The Festival of Arts was my introduction to the art world as a young man. Each summer, Mom would pack up a picnic basket and we’d head down in the afternoon to view the exhibits, followed by a magical evening at t he Pageant of the Masters. I’m looking forward to highlighting the many events that Laguna Beach offers the local community.

YOUR CHILD’S BEST SMILE

WHAT ABOUT MOM & DAD?

A big, beautiful smile lasts a lifetime. Choosing the right orthodontist to capture your child’s best smile is an important decision. Not only should a doctor be experienced in proper dental function and aesthetics, but also in early interceptive orthodontics and facial orthopedics. Dr. Mogavero’s expertise allows him to guide your child’s dental and facial growth by closely evaluating changing bone structure to create that “winning smile.” The American Association of Orthodontists recommends that a child receive an initial orthodontic evaluation by age 6 or 7. Dr. Mogavero encourages parents to take a proactive role in having children examined early. “Prevention at an early age is key to successful results,” says Mogavero. Dr. Mogavero offers complimentary examinations to his patients, affording them an opportunity to determine if treatment is needed, even without a referral from their regular dentist. Dr. Mogavero’s credentials and experience speak for themselves. As a Board Certified orthodontist celebrating 20 years of creating beautiful smiles in South Orange County, he offers a combination of education and expertise that puts patients at ease. Dr. Mogavero graduated with honors in both dentistry and engineering from UCLA and completed post-graduate orthodontic specialty-training at Baylor University. He was a clinical professor at USC for more than five years and has served as an expert witness on a variety of orthodontic cases. Dr. Mogavero also co-authored a textbook chapter on surgical orthodontics.

Orthodontics isn’t just for kids! Mom and Dad can also achieve the smile they’ve always wanted with Invisalign®, clear braces and other high-tech options. “Beautifully straight teeth boost confidence and it’s never too late to have a great looking smile,” says Mogavero “Adults love the clear and invisible alternatives we offer for their treatment!” Patient Lauren Franklin, Sponsorships and Events Coordinator for Mammoth Mountain Ski Area concurs, “After being told I needed braces back home in Australia and then putting it off for 10 years, I finally went to Dr. Mogavero after recommendations from many happy patients. I am stoked with the progress of my teeth straightening and I really enjoy my regular visits with Dr. Frank and his staff!”

“Our experience with Dr. Mogavero and his staff has been nothing but positive. They are always friendly, helpful and professional. They accommodate the busy schedule that we have with all three of our sons in orthodontics. I have and will continue to recommend them in the future.” —Jennifer Harlow

Living Your Passion

your smile Shouldn’t your smile reflect a healthy, active Southern California lifestyle? Syncing your smile with your lifestyle is as simple as visiting Dr. Frank Mogavero. He’s brought brilliant smiles to the faces of Orange County families for twenty years. So what is it about a stunning smile that captivates us? According to Dr. Mogavero, “A beautiful smile is the result of more than just straight teeth. Many who have had braces in the past have perfectly aligned teeth, but their smile does not portray the full, radiant, star-quality component that attracts us.” In the past, many orthodontists believed that successful outcomes were generated by merely fitting a patient with braces. Often, teeth were extracted unnecessarily, resulting in a shrunken profile and narrow smile which was not in balance with the patient’s face. Dr. Mogavero takes a comprehensive approach to orthodontics, paying great attention to the way in which teeth fit and enhance a patient’s face, creating a more harmonious and attractive appearance. “A star-quality smile does not happen by chance. An orthodontist must have an artistic eye for facial aesthetics and teeth positioning, relative to the face and lips,” shares Mogavero. Dr. Mogavero strives to deliver the best possible union of functionality and enhanced aesthetics. “Every person who visits my office has a unique set of circumstances and each person’s smile must be customized to their particular facial and dental structure,” adds Mogavero.

NO ORDINARY ORTHODONTIST’S OFFICE Inspired by the active Orange County lifestyle, Dr. Mogavero created an orthodontic office like no other. Mogavero offers cutting-edge dentistry with state-ofthe-art equipment, including free-of-charge, ultra lowradiation digital x-rays in the comfort of a vacation-style atmosphere. Straight from the slopes of Mammoth, this unique office features a fun ski/surf/skate interior designed to make every visit an enjoyable experience for adults and children alike. Chill in the ski-resort-themed waiting room (complete with lift chairs from Old Mammoth Chair #9), while your kids play video games in the Wii cave, catch up on their studies in the homework room or enjoy their favorite TV show in surround sound. Parents remain connected through complimentary Wi-Fi and are welcome to check e-mail or browse the Web in the computer room.

“Who says orthodontics can’t be fun?”

Dr. Mogavero is passionate about his profession and nothing makes him smile more than knowing his patients are thrilled with their results. Mogavero draws inspiration from innovators he has known throughout his lifetime who also love what they do. He holds great admiration for Dr. William Beazley, his personal orthodontist from the 1970’s, Dave McCoy, the developer of Mammoth Mountain Resort who started it all with a tractor-pulled rope tow in the 1930’s, and his own father. Dr. Mogavero and his family love skiing and snowboarding and it’s no coincidence that he also practices part-time in the resort town of Mammoth Lakes. As an avid snowboarder, Dr. Mogavero takes particular inspiration from the close-knit snowboarding community. “They’re like a large family,” says Mogavero, “Snowboarders, in general, are proud of each other‘s accomplishments, whether in the halfpipe or on the slopes. Professional snowboarders have chosen to pursue a sport they love and then have tied that love into their work.” Says Oren Tanzer, Director of Youth Action Sports Marketing at Mammoth Mountain Ski Area, “You have to do what you love in this lifetime. For me, snowboarding is my biggest passion. When most people are working for the weekends, I can’t wait to go to work another day on the mountain.” Dr. Mogavero has been fortunate to find a way of fusing his love of snowboarding and orthodontics in his own practice, complete with real chairlifts. He and his staff strive to create an environment where patients feel that they are “part of the family.” Dr. Mogavero is confident that this helps him get the best smiles possible, “If you love your work, what you create will be awesome!”

“Snowboarding is Awesome! I love being outdoors with friends in God’s beautiful Creation. Whatever your work is, do it with all your might.” – Olympian Tommy Czeschin

Award-Winning Golf Course

If you haven’t been to Marbella Country Club lately, it’s time to take a look at the exciting changes that are taking place. Under the watchful eye of General Manager, Dan Riker, the historic property has enjoyed a renaissance of sorts, and the local community is invited to check it out. This non-equity private country club may be South OC’s best kept secret…but not for long. By Shelley Hudson

First Class Food & Drinks

The historic 50,000 square foot Mediterranean style clubhouse is tucked away in the hills of San Juan Capistrano, with dramatic, sweeping views. Marbella features all the amenities you could ask for and the impeccable service you would expect at an exclusive resort. With a variety of newly instituted value-oriented programs, Marbella also proves to be an exceptional value. Marbella is first and foremost a golf-centric club. The Morrish/Weiskopf-designed course follows the natural terrain of the canyon and promises a challenging round. To perfect your game, Marbella offers a full spectrum golf academy that caters to all levels — even kids. A practice bunker, chipping and putting greens, and a grass driving range make it easy to slip in a little practice during the week. Marbella also has a full calendar of Golf Association tournaments and clinics to feed your competitive spirit and a well-appointed pro shop that carries the gear you’ll need to stay sharp. Whether you’re a golfer who travels or a traveler who plays golf, inquire about The Platinum Club, which allows you to take your membership with you! The tennis and aquatic programs at Marbella are also well-established and a great way to

involve the entire family. Tennis enthusiasts can enjoy six lighted courts and numerous clinics for players of all ages. Private swim lessons for kids and adults, a fun-sized toddler pool, as well as the Manta Rays swim team make the 25m pool (heated to 84º all year round!) the place to be all summer. The snack bar, adjacent to the pool and tennis courts, provides a convenient way to grab a bite or drink between sets or while soaking up the sun. The expansive clubhouse is the heart of the Marbella lifestyle. Members enjoy a full service fitness center with state-of-the-art equipment, personal training, a group exercise room with an extensive schedule of yoga, pilates, and aerobics classes, and a sauna / steam / whirlpool. LOCAL HEALTH

San Clemente Family Medicine

Dr. Candice Basich

Family Medicine Evolves As Healthcare Awareness Grows by Rob Bryant

ber Dr. Am

Pachon

San Clemente Family Medicine 1300 Ave. Vista Hermosa, Ste. 200 San Clemente

949.452.3199

Mention healthcare reform and you may see people’s eyes glaze over from media over-exposure on the topic. Bring up the subject of family medicine and they’ll likely blink back with recognition and opinion. Why? Two trends in healthcare have become apparent and both of them seem to favor a new practice like San Clemente Family Medicine, which opened last October at the Saddleback Health Center at Talega. The first trend is that female patients are becoming more knowledgeable and proactive about healthcare. Being interviewed by potential patients for suitability is a case in point and a frequent occurrence, according to Candace Basich M.D., who shares the opinion and the San Clemente Family Medicine practice with Amber Pachon M.D. These medical colleagues don’t mind being evaluated by patients, however, because it gives them an opportunity to talk about their training and philosophy of family care. In an established, timesensitive medical office setting, there typically isn’t time for such an information exchange. Both Dr. Basich and Dr. Pachon, who completed their residency together at Long Beach Memorial last summer, enjoy establishing their credentials with even the most internet-influenced interrogators. “We’re aware of pretty much everything that’s out there,” Dr. Pachon says of their response to the perils of the information age.

18 APRIL 2010

thelocaldish.net

What patients learn in an introductory session is that these doctors are very tech-savvy and can access information within as well as way beyond a patient’s reach. “Our practice is electronically linked to the Saddleback Memorial network,” adds Dr. Basich, “which gives us access to information and records throughout the system and facilitates every aspect of care from check-ups to treatment.” The capability to immediately have the same information as any physician on the network assures that their practice doesn’t have to rely solely on the patient’s memory for medical and drug history.

and have come to accept or reject them based on the results of controlled trials. “We explain or agree with our patients that they have options when it comes to treatment,” Dr. Basich says. “The patient always has a choice. Part of our approach is to provide all the variables and make a recommendation.” Dr. Pachon says, “It’s also important that the patient knows the likely result of each option before they make a choice. We provide that as well so that each decision is an informed one.”

Also important for the inquiring patient to learn is that the Saddleback network can be accessed for the latest illness trends and discoveries in diagnoses and treatment. Taking the time to share such important high-tech capabilities helps establish trust and confidence and can accelerate the physician-patient bond.

Doctors Basich and Pachon are board-certified family medicine physicians, specializing in comprehensive care for the entire family, including children, teens, adults and seniors. They offer same-day or next-day appointments and both doctors are available on a 24hour basis to their patients. In addition, San Clemente Family Medicine is contracted with most insurance plans, as well as Monarch Health Care.

The second trend in the medical community is the growing acceptance of “alternative” treatments such as nutrition, chiropractics and preventative medicine. Doctors Basich and Pachon have been exposed to modern medical options

The offices of Dr. Basich and Dr. Pachon are located at the corner of Avenida Pico and Avenida Vista Hermosa in the Saddleback Health Center. For more information or to schedule an appointment, please call (949) 452-3199.

LOCAL EVENTS

hop along to by Shelley Hudson

Spring has sprung, and so, too, has the Easter Bunny. Rumors all over South OC have Mr. Cottontail himself making appearances and hiding brightly colored eggs in every grassy patch from Laguna Beach to San Clemente. Easter is a great time to enjoy the weather, the kids and maybe even a peep or two. Get set for a basketful of free family fun…

Dana Point

Laguna Beach

San Juan Capistrano

San Clemente

Dana Point offers two Egg Hunts, generously sponsored by the City of Dana Point Recreation Department. The events take place simultaneously on Saturday, April 3rd at 10:00 a.m. at two of the city’s most beautiful spots, Sea Canyon Park and Pines Park. The hunts are open to children up to ten years of age and both offer a petting zoo and photo ops with Sir Hopsalot.

Laguna’s annual American Legion and Women’s Auxiliary Easter Egg Hunt takes place at 1:00 p.m. sharp on Sunday, April 4th at the Laguna Beach High School baseball field. Come early (noon) for photos with the Easter Bunny. This event is more than 50 years in the running and promises that over 1000 eggs will be hiding! Open to all children aged nine and younger.

The city of San Juan has a couple of long-held Easter traditions of its own. The annual Easter Egg Extravaganza, sponsored by the Rotary Club, takes place at Historic Town Center Park on Saturday, April 3rd from 9:00 a.m. to noon. The event draws a crowd and features a bounce house, face painting, egg dying and pictures with a certain fuzzy special guest.

For an altruistic take on the holiday, put on your sneakers and sunglasses and head to one of nine locations around town (including Laguna Beach High School, Whole Foods and Yoga Works) where volunteers participate in the Zero Trash Laguna campaign every first Saturday of the month from 10 a.m. to noon (April 3rd). This group helps keep the city streets clean and business owners proud.

If Saturday’s event doesn’t fit your schedule, Calvary Chapel invites you to celebrate Easter in the Park on Sunday, April 4th, also at Town Center Park. An elaborate BBQ is the major draw for this day out and live music and an Easter egg hunt do not disappoint. The fun starts at 10:00 a.m. and runs until 2:00 p.m. Come one, come all!

The city’s Spring Spectacular has everything Easter in one place! The event at San Gorgonio Park starts off with a pancake breakfast sponsored by the Kiwanis and Key Clubs (9:00 a.m. to noon) and continues through the morning with a series of age-group Easter egg hunts. To keep the little ones busy after the baskets are full, the Spectacular offers face painting, pony rides, and visits with Wilbur the Pig and Mary and her Little Lamb. Don’t miss your chance to find the Prize Egg… ages two and under 11:00 a.m., ages three and four 11:30 a.m., ages five through seven 12:00 p.m., and ages eight through ten 12:30 p.m.

26 APRIL 2010

A wonderful way to give back to the community is to support the Community Easter Brunch on Saturday, April 3rd, at 10:00 a.m. at Ole Hanson Beach Club. The event is open to individuals and families in need and is co-sponsored by the Family Assistance Ministries and the City of San Clemente. Volunteer and donation opportunities are available. Call 949.492.8477 for more information.

Benise

Nuevo Flamenco: Music * Love * Life! BY ANTHONY SMALL { www.smallworldband.com }

Take a musical journey with BENISE, an Emmy Award-winning World Music and dance production that comes to The Coach House on April 24th. Composer, guitarist and creator, Roni Benise (pronounced Buh-nes-say), says the show pushes the boundaries of traditional Flamenco/Spanish guitar and combines the beautiful and passionate elements of music, dance and theater. Inspired by their tour that covered ten countries (including India, Sri Lanka and Spain), over three years, BENISE will appeal to people of all ages, cultures and musical backgrounds. “Our collaborations with artists around the world always incorporated local instrumentation, harmonies and beats. That made each stop unique and The Coach House show will be a celebration of our journey,” shares Benise. This special event will provide a sneak preview of the upcoming BENISE Fall Tour. Accompanied by his band and world-class Flamenco dancers, Benise said, “We are looking forward to playing The Coach House for the first time. We have played at the Mission San Juan Capistrano and love the intimate shows and really interacting with the audience.” Flamenco, Classical and even Rock and Roll elements challenge the band with different styles and instrumentation. “That’s what people enjoy - hearing different styles, changing it up. There really is something for everyone.” From a grass roots beginning in Southern California, BENISE started out by playing in the streets, in front of coffee shops, selling lots of CDs. The buzz and the band built, as they added dancers and exotic showmanship. Soon they were promoting and selling out their own shows at larger and larger venues. “The next logical step was to travel the world and capture the essence and beauty of those different places in my melodies,” Benise said. “I hope people will be inspired by our music and our story, and have the passion to follow their own dreams.” Looking ahead to future tour dates, Benise adds, “I can’t wait to travel to new cities, meet new people and play every night—it’s what I live for.”

To be fair, Mark’s had me at the butter. As we were seated, the most glorious bread and butter were delivered to our table. That night’s creation was warm jalapeño cheese bread accompanied by a beautiful hunk of fresh, sweet, unsalted butter sprinkled with crystals of red and black Hawaiian salt. After the bread and butter ecstasy, we moved on to the buffalo mozzarella caprese salad – perfect snow white balls of fresh mozzarella, halved tear drop tomatoes and baby greens drizzled with a balsamic glaze. Every ingredient was at its peak and the addition of kalamata olives provided a perfect flavor balance. The soup offering was French onion – a lovely, golden, sage-laced onion broth, caramelized onions and a toasted crouton topped with a slice of brie. Our entrées were equally incredible. We started with sautéed shrimp perched atop cilantro and garlic risotto, surrounded by a puddle of smoky chipotle and tomatillo cream sauce. This dish was intensely flavorful and satisfying on every level. Our grilled filet mignon was cooked to perfection and served with garlic mashed potatoes and a gossamer béarnaise sauce. My favorite house-made desserts were the Apple Tarte Tatin and the Mexican Chocolate Torte. Made with Abuelita’s Mexican chocolate, the torte is an unbelievably good chocolate cookie crust topped with a mixture of chocolate cream, allspice, nutmeg, cinnamon and cayenne pepper. The apples of the Tarte Tatin were indescribably smooth in texture, bathed in a caramel pan sauce and inverted atop a puff pastry crust. Not to be overlooked is the value. At Mark’s, the portions and prices are sized for the real world making it worthy of many return visits. Are you there yet?
