Feeling Waspish? In favour of the humble wasp
Inside the nest, the queen wasp lays eggs and is responsible for the reproduction of the colony. The worker wasps are responsible for building and maintaining the nest, foraging for food, and protecting the colony from predators. The males, or drones, are responsible for mating with the queen and do not have a stinger.
Despite their reputation for being aggressive, wasps are actually beneficial to gardens. They play a significant role in controlling other insect populations, such as flies and caterpillars, and help to pollinate flowers and plants.

With their distinctive black and yellow bodies, angry buzz, and stingers, wasps are easily recognisable. Most of us have splatted one that’s becoming annoying. However, they are fascinating creatures with a complex social structure.

Wasps create nests using a combination of saliva and wood fibres. The result is a papery substance that is strong, yet lightweight. The nests themselves can take on a variety of shapes and sizes, depending on the species of wasp. Some nests are small and round, while others can be several feet long and have multiple levels. They are often incredibly beautiful, and usually last for one season before being abandoned.
But there’s no doubt that wasps can be a nuisance to humans (especially those humans trying to enjoy a picnic). Instead of killing them try the following:
Cover sweets drinks and foods.
Distract wasps to another location, by placing sugar water or banana skins away from seating and eating areas.

Use a safe, deet-free insect repellent.
Burn citronella candles.
Don’t eat close to fruit trees - especially ripe plums or apricots, they are a magnet for wasps.

Located at 142 High St., Worle, this clinic will be our home base and provide support to our existing clinics in Clevedon and Portishead. Our new clinic boasts top-quality facilities that allow us to deliver the highest quality of care.

You’ll love our soundproof walls and sound booth, which help us achieve the most accurate hearing tests. Plus, we have space for the safest and most up-to-date wax removal methods, along with comfortable and secure surroundings to discuss your Tinnitus treatments and hearing care plans.
If you’re eager to book an appointment, we’re open for business now and can’t wait to see you. We’re planning a grand opening later this month and will be announcing the date on our website, along with some special offers for existing and new clients.
In other news, we came across a fascinating study from the University of Geneva that suggests we should all listen to, and ideally play more music! The research shows that by doing so, we can prevent memory decline and increase grey matter volume in brain areas that deal with high-level cognitive function. Stay tuned for more on this topic in the future!
Finally, if you’d like to know more about how we can help you and your family’s hearing, don’t hesitate to get in touch. We’re always here to help.

The Girl Who Drank the Moon
by Kelly BarnhillThe Girl Who Drank the Moon is a captivating and enchanting Newbery Medal-winning novel. Set in a world of magic and wonder, it tells the story of Luna, a young girl unknowingly filled with powerful magic after being fed moonlight by the good witch Xan. The novel follows Luna, Xan, a wise swamp monster named Glerk, and a tiny,
talkative dragon called Fyrian as they navigate the complexities of Luna’s magical abilities and unravel the mysteries surrounding their world.
Barnhill’s lyrical prose and vivid world-building draws readers into the story, and the characters are both endearing and complex. The book is a delightful blend of fantasy, adventure, and coming-of-age, with a touch of darkness that lends depth to the narrative. It explores themes of love, sacrifice, and the power of knowledge, providing valuable lessons for both young and adult readers.
The plot is intricately woven, with enough twists and turns to keep the reader engaged throughout.

The Girl Who Drank the Moon is a beautifully written, heart-warming tale that effortlessly blends fantasy and reality. It will captivate readers of all ages, leaving them with a sense of wonder and a deeper appreciation for the magic in their own lives.

Want First Class service? Read on …
This last month has been quite a busy one with plenty of machines repaired and many new machines supplied. Time and again we get phone calls thanking us for the service given, which are always fantastic to receive. We also received this most wonderful review on Google, it really sums up the service we aim to achieve. So, with no further words from us, we will let it speak for itself.

“First Class Service from start to finish A++++++++

The big retail park outlets & high street electronic stores could learn a thing or two from the boys at Brown’s Domestic Appliances Weston.

You won’t find Delboy or Rodney here as Brown’s Domestic Appliances customer service, professionalism, honesty, and can-do attitude puts Brown’s Domestic Appliance customers at the heart of everything they do. Phil at Brown’s Domestic Appliances was amazing, from the initial enquiry over the phone to sorting out a speedy inspection of my oven which had given up after 21years by his son David. All advice and help I received was given honestly and recommendations of either repair or new appliance offered without pressure leaving me to decide what I was happy with. All phone calls and emails were answered very quickly and nothing was too much trouble, even taking time at the fitting stage of the appliance to explain and demonstrate how all the tech worked and making sure I was pleased with the results. I can’t fault their service as it was second to none, the new Bosch Oven they recommended was spotless inside and out and was a lovely addition to my kitchen. I can’t wait to get cooking again!

Phil and David exceeded my expectations, a really excellent service from an amazing family run local business Thanks again.”

Are your devices and accounts safe and secure?

A professional security review can make absolutely sure
Today, there is no using a computer, laptop, smartphone, or tablet without being bombarded with confusing messages, popups and emails pertaining to the security of our various online accounts. On phones, for example, warnings of log-in attempts, requests for account detail reviews, alerts of changes, and countless more, hound our notifications. Fact is, accounts must be maintained in order to remain secure, and so it is important to read and act upon these requests when prompted. Here enters the problem – fake variations of these messages are circulated to almost all of us and appear virtually identical to the real deal. A momentary lapse of judgement is all it takes, one touch of the screen or click of the mouse and the damage is done. Deleting the email doesn’t undo the damage. Proper action must be taken but often remains undone. Blissfully unaware victims could have their emails being viewed by strangers, or worse. It is crucial we all keep strangers out of our accounts. Often, signs of breaches are in front of victims but go unacknowledged, such as concerning emails or popups about account changes or sign-in attempts. Think hard whether you have received messages or account alerts which seem “off” and don’t make sense to you, as it might be smart to arrange for an experienced engineer to check over all your accounts to check for vulnerabilities or infringements. We find almost all accounts we check have at least some flaws which can be addressed. Phones and tablets are no safer than computers, so regardless of the devices you use, remain alert to account violations. Has the situation occurred whereby you reacted to a message on the screen or phone call and allowed a third party to remote control your computer? As difficult as it is to accept, this is likely to be a fraud and your device may have been compromised. I would recommend that you call us to arrange us to check your device, in case some kind of malware/virus has been installed. To arrange a security review appointment (we can visit you at your home or business), please see our advert on this page or contact myself Neil Buzzard (Computer Problem Solutions Ltd) on 07973 536299.

Garden View This month – Poached egg flowers
Poached Egg plants are among my summer favourites. Limnanthes douglasii (to give it its proper name) is a fantastic addition to any garden. It is easy to grow, requires little care and produces masses of beautiful flowers that attract pollinators. The best time to plant it is outside from March to May but if you have a sunny, well-drained spot you can plant them in early June and they will reward you handsomely with delightful fat yellow-centred blooms, which I think look more like fried eggs than poached ones! The delicate ferny foliage is also attractive.
Planting limnanthes douglasii is straightforward. Sow the seeds directly in a sunny, well-drained area. The soil ideal should be light and fertile. If you have heavy soil, you can improve it by adding sand and organic matter such as compost, leaf mould or well-rotted manure. Don’t go mad or you’ll end up with lots of leaves and fewer flowers.
Sow the seeds thinly on the surface of the soil and cover them lightly with a thin layer of soil. Water gently to keep the soil moist. Germination usually takes 7-14 days, and once the seedlings have emerged, thin them to a distance of 15cm apart to allow for good airflow and growth.
You might need to go on slug patrol while the plants are small, but once established, poached egg plants are low-maintenance and require little care. Water regularly, during dry spells and that’s about it! You can also prolong the flowers by deadheading the faded blooms regularly.
Limnanthes douglasii is a prolific bloomer that produces masses of flowers from June to August, though if you plant now they’ll probably go through to the end of September if your garden is sheltered.

The plant grows to a height of 15cm and spreads to a width of around 15-20cm. It self-seeds freely so makes an excellent ground cover. It can be planted in borders, rockeries, meadows or as a filler in containers. It also attracts bees, butterflies, and other pollinators to the garden, making it an excellent addition to wildlife-friendly gardens.
Plant a poached egg today!

HIGHEST RATED ROOFER IN SOMERSET! (42

Google reviews)

“Fantastic responsive service. It’s the 2nd time I have used central roofing and on both occasions they turned up on time got on with the job and kept us informed on what was being carried out. Went above and beyond and assisted me in issues around insurance. I would recommend this company to anyone with roofing issues.”

We used Central Roofing to take down an old flat roof and install another on our business premises at Knight Brothers Garage. The company was very reliable, they turned up when they said they would, the guys that did the work were very tidy and efficient. The work was completed in the time frame they set…we are more than pleased with the finished job.
