CHURCH

TO ADVERTISE CALL 01934 312171

Acts 2:1-21 Pentecost In the Christian world we have just celebrated Pentecost, which is considered the birthday of the church, but more importantly it was the arrival of the promised Holy Spirit to empower the church to be witnesses and to continue the work of Jesus in the world. Just imagine, it has been an emotional rollercoaster ride for the disciples over the last 50 days or so; Their leader, their Messiah had been crucified, all was lost, hope had gone, they had no clue that He would rise again, from devastation to elation as they saw Him standing in front of them again. Over the next 40 days Jesus spent time with them again, talking to them about the Kingdom of God, everything back to normal, or maybe so they thought. Then He left them, He ascended, Jesus rose from the earth and was taken up into the heavens out of sight. It took a couple of angels to wake them from the fixation on the sky, searching for one last glimpse. But Jesus had not left without a promise, that the comforter, truth revealer, the power to witness and testify was coming, He the Holy Spirit was on His way, but they had to wait for Him.

How long did they have to wait? We know, probably about 10 days, but they didn’t know this as they gathered up in the upper room to pray, a band of 120 people of all ages, waiting. What was going through their minds? what were they feeling? What was going to happen next? How were they going to go back to normal? These are familiar questions, aren’t they? We have been asking these very questions ourselves? In this time of covid, we have been wandering the same things; How long? What’s next? What’s it going to look like going back? We are in a waiting time, waiting for all restrictions to be lifted, so we can go back to normal. But the thing is, normal was never going to be an option for these gathered individuals, He was coming, the Holy Spirit was on His way, and they would never be the same again. The adventure was about to start, the birth of the church was here, the world was about to be turned upside down by the arrival of the Holy Spirit. Are you waiting to go back to normal, or going forward into a new supernatural normal, responding to the call of the Holy Spirit who calls us all to follow Jesus into a new supernatural adventure?
