Peace of mind that you or your loved one are being supported

For 35 years, vulnerable people requiring support to remain living independently at home have been enabled to do so thanks to the caring staff at Candlelight Care. The company began on a kitchen table just outside Glastonbury and remains owned by the same family, two generations of whom continue to lead the organisation.

We understand that allowing people into your home to provide care and support to yourself or a loved one is a big step. That’s why Candlelight Care staff pride themselves on being trustworthy, reliable and considerate to our clients. We try to maintain a regular rota of staff wherever possible, enabling clients and staff to build a good rapport and make the visits a part of the day which clients look forward to. As society changes and the population ages, social care companies are increasingly asked to provide specialist services. Candlelight Care is pleased to offer these, enabling people with additional needs and life-limiting conditions the opportunity to live at home for longer. Our staff receive additional training to support clients living with dementia, those recovering from a stroke, and people reaching the end of their lives who wish to spend their final days in familiar surroundings. We think that it is a privilege to be trusted to support people in these circumstances and are always proud to do so.

With Candlelight Care, not only will you have the peace of mind that you or your loved one are being supported, but you’ll also have the added reassurance that we are rated ‘Good’ by the Care Quality Commission.

Here are just a few recent comments from clients and their families:

“The lady we discussed my mother and father (both with dementia) with was very helpful and made someveryusefulsuggestionstohelpreassureusanddirectustotheproperchannelsforadvice.”D.J. “Everyone was so sympathetic and professional. Could not recommend highly enough. The care was exceptional, right to her last hours. Most dignified and worry free, enabling her to be at home.” L.W. Garden View
This month – Watering: balancing need with conservation

automatic systems provide better control use far less water.

Mulching further conserves water by preventing the underlying soil from drying out in warm weather. It creates a protective layer on the soil surface, acting as a barrier to reduce evaporation. Organic mulch materials include straw, wood chips, bark, leaves, grass clippings, and compost. These materials break down over time, enriching the soil with nutrients while simultaneously retaining moisture. Organic mulch also improves soil structure, promotes beneficial microbial activity, and helps prevent weed growth. It needs to be reapplied as it breaks down.
Keeping our gardens healthy and hydrated can be a challenging task, especially during hot summers or when we’re away from home. The days when gardeners used hosepipes liberally are long gone. An automatic watering system can offer an efficient solution to keeping the garden looking great while not destroying the environment.

Watering systems provide a hands-free approach to watering the garden. They consist of pipes, valves, and sprinklers or drippers strategically placed throughout your garden. They can be connected to a timer and a water source, such as a tap. The timer allows you to set specific watering schedules, ensuring your plants receive water even when you’re not around. This is particularly handy for busy individuals or holiday periods.
Installation requires some basic plumbing skills, but it is quite manageable for most gardeners. The system needs to be connected to a water source, and the pipes, valves, and sprinklers or drippers need to be positioned accordingly. Personally, I prefer drippers to sprinklers as they are less wasteful. Proper planning and layout are crucial to ensure efficient water distribution. There are lots of helpful videos on YouTube offering great advice.
Watering systems can also be used with stored rainwater from a water butt. This makes them even more eco-friendly. If you’re going to do this make sure to use appropriate filtration and pump system to ensure the rainwater is suitable for distribution through the watering system.: Even if you have to use tap water, automatic systems are designed for efficient use. By targeting specific areas and delivering water directly to the plants’ roots, they minimize wastage. Additionally, the use of timers allows for precise scheduling, preventing overwatering, thus further conserving water. Compared to using a hosepipe, which can lead to water runoff and inefficient coverage,
Inorganic mulch materials such as gravel, stones do not break down and can very decorative. Its more expensive so better suited to small spaces. Apply a layer of mulch that is 2-4 inches thick around plants, leaving a gap around the stem or trunk to prevent rotting. Ensure the mulch extends to the drip line of trees and shrubs to cover the entire root zone. When used alongside an automatic drip watering system, mulching goes a long way towards reducing water usage in the garden.
By Rachael LevertonOutdoor “living” space
In 2020 just as the country went into lockdown, I bought an outdoor corner sofa for the garden. It seemed a bit indulgent at the time as I was “home alone” but the weather was hot and during that first summer of “staycations” I really enjoyed my life outdoors, and still do.
Creating an outdoor “living” space is a wonderful way of extending our homes into our gardens to socialise and relax with friends and family. But when cushions get stained or faded by the sun, don’t just throw them away. Consider getting new cushions made to fit your sofa. At Pretty Sitting we stock a wide range of lovely outdoor fabrics and can make up your cushion covers to your specifications. We also supply high quality hollow fibre and foam inners to fit your covers.
As a finishing touch try our Weaver Green scatter cushions and throws to add decorative touches and provide extra comfort and warmth on a chilly evening. They are all made with 100% recycled plastic bottles and are waterproof, moth proof, washable and pet friendly. So just relax and enjoy the summer…..

LVT or laminate?

LVT (luxury vinyl tile) and laminate are both popular hard flooring choices but they have some key differences. Both come in wood plank designs, but for tiles, there is more choice in LVT. LVT is made from polyvinyl chloride (PVC), while laminate is made from a composite of wood fibres and resins, so laminate does not like getting wet and if water seeps between the planks it will expand, leaving unsightly gaps between the boards. There are a few waterresistant laminates specially made for bathrooms and kitchens.
Laminate click fits together quickly, making it an ideal D-I-Y choice. LVT flooring is available in click-fit, but for the best water resistant finish it is stuck down. It has been known to withstand flooding from washing machine leaks, although there are no guarantees for this.

LVT needs a much higher level of floor preparation, which is not a D-I-Y job, because any imperfections in the floor underneath may show through, especially as light shines across it. Laminate needs a level floor to support the planks evenly, but minor surface imperfections do not matter.

LVT can be fitted right up to the skirting boards whereas laminate flooring always needs an expansion gap round the edge. The gap can be hidden beneath the skirting boards, which works well in a new build, or if you are prepared to take your skirting boards off. Otherwise, the gap needs to be covered with scotia, a concave trim, or quadrant, a convex trim. This can look clumsy, especially in a hall-way where there are several door ways opening off.
Generally, LVT is more expansive but it is also more durable than laminate, with life-time guarantees on even the bottom end ranges being common. There is a wider choice of styles, and LVT tiles are often fitted with feature strips in between to look like grout. Borders can be inserted to follow the contours of your space, or even a central motif, so that you have a truly individual floor.
Over half the UK population have never had a hearing test
By Simon Swindells, Director and Clinical Lead Audiologist at South West Hearing Care
Can you remember when you last had your hearing tested? If you have never had one, you certainly are not alone. A recent study* highlighted that in the UK, well over half the population (65%) have never had a hearing test.
If you asked yourself when was your last dental check-up or eye test, you would probably say in the last 2 years. So why do we not take the same care with our hearing?
There are currently 12 million adults (1-in-5) in the UK who experience hearing loss and our lifestyle means that the condition is becoming increasingly prevalent. Thankfully, with the use of accurate diagnostics and fantastic hearing assistive technology - it’s often an easily solved problem.
If you suspect you or a loved one are experiencing difficulties with hearing properly and are feeling hesitant about taking the next step, remember that you are not alone. Consider the improvements in quality of life experienced by individuals who take action and address their hearing loss. The experience can be life changing - hearing aid users say they grow in confidence, communicating in groups becomes easier and less stressful and they begin to enjoy life again.
Our hearing allows us to connect with our surroundings and communicate with our loved ones. The ability to hear properly can go a long way in helping to stay active. Correct communication with family and friends can mean the difference between a fun and enjoyable day out or a confusing and frustrating day.

To book a hearing test appointment with Simon at his clinics in either Street or Westbury, please call 01458 555533 (Street) / 01373 823076 (Westbury) or visit www.southwesthearingcare.co.uk

Are you a Wimbledon Winner?! Musings of an OvenGleamer
Wimbledon is running from 3rd-16th July this year and there’ll be some incredible tennis played at varying levels of expertise. But what sort of Chef are you?
Ball Boy? (and about my level!) cooking is one of your life’s simple pleasures and your skill level is simple too. You’re great at using the microwave and can cope with a pan of boiling water for pasta and potatoes. You could cook a 3 course meal with a combi-microwave. Cheat with a ready-made prawn cocktails, then cook a chicken using the grill function and cook ‘steam in a bag’ vegetables to produce a Roast Dinner. For dessert “ping” chocolate sponge puddings with chocolate sauce to finish off…simples!
More budding chefs (most of you) come in at least an Umpire standard. You’re great at using a hob and an oven with several pans boiling away on the hob top whilst a delicious joint is roasting away in the oven. You are classic multi-tasker with better time–management skills than me. My partner falls in this category – she does a mean Roast Beef, Yorkshire puddings and mountains of vegetables – all cooked to perfection and appearing on the table at the same time. For dessert she produces an apple pie out of oven with creamy custard. She then expects me, a professional oven cleaner, to clean our cooker? Does she not understand that it’s my day off?
Wimbledon Cup winners are you BBQ cookers! How anyone can produce an array of succulent steaks, juicy sausages and melt-in-the-mouth burgers as well as foil wrapped salmon from just a metal grid over some hot coals or gas, I’ll never know. You then to serve them with a selection of fresh salads and summer cocktails – a skill level way beyond my reach. My friends do this, invite me over and I can enjoy the fruits of their labours! Then with a messy BBQ, they phone me to clean it – fed and paid – Gold Medal for me on that one!
So where do you fit into my medal parade – are you a Ball Boy, Umpire or Wimbledon Cup Chef? I promise you a Cup level service, call today: Dean Sheppard, OvenGleamers on 01749 705059

Super-healing a bone fracture with hyperbaric oxygen therapy
“A full range of movement after six weeks in a sling”
Harry, a 16 year old rugby player, went on a skiing holiday in February and was unfortunate enough to fracture his collar bone.
On returning home to Wells, Harry was seen by a specialist surgeon, who took x-rays and reviewed the fracture. He also recommended that Harry should have some sessions in a hyperbaric oxygen chamber - and that he, the surgeon, expected see a noticeable difference at the six-week fracture follow up.
Harry’s father, Tom, explains, “We decided to hire an oxygen chamber for home use and, through an internet search, we found Matthew and Origin Oxygen. He talked us easily through the whole process, including the type and size of chamber and optimum length of hire.

“He quickly delivered the chamber to us and explained how to use it. Matthew was also very knowledgeable about other treatments, like herbs, and offered his knowledge freely.”
Matthew explains, “Having checked that Harry’s surgeon was satisfied with the realignment of the fractured bone - which avoids long term problems - I was happy to support his use of the chamber because I know how effective HBOT (hyperbaric oxygen therapy) can be in prompting faster bone growth to create a super-healing.
Harry used the oxygen chamber daily and, at the follow up, the surgeon was delighted, especially with his full range of movement despite having been in a sling for six weeks.
Harry was able to move on to physiotherapy and progressed quickly. When he resumed speed training for rugby fitness, his 10 metre sprint times were, remarkably, the same as prior to the injury.

EweMove now in North Somerset

The rapidly growing sales and letting agent, EweMove, is welcoming a new member to its flock as Anne has now launched in North Somerset. Anne commented: “I am delighted to be launching the unique and award winning EweMove brand” she said. “I am confident that our innovative approach to estate agency, combined with our 24/7 service and passion for brilliant customer experience will be hugely beneficial to everyone looking to buy, sell or let locally,” she said.

“The key to our success is our quirky brand and our extensive marketing. We make sure that our customer’s properties really do stand out from the crowd, giving them the attention they deserve,” she continued, “This includes providing amazing photographs, 2D and 3D colour floor plans as well as carefully crafted marketing descriptions.”

According to Anne, 95% of people now search online for property, this is why EweMove lists properties on all of the major property portals to generate huge exposure and lots of enquiries. “This, combined with EweMove’s ‘Mammoth Marketing’ approach,” she continued, “means that our seller’s and landlord’s homes get
more interest, more quickly. We also operate a 24/7 service to ensure that any viewing, enquiry, purchase offer or application is never lost. It’s obvious really. Most people search for houses online when they’ve finished work, or at weekends - precisely when most agents are shut.”
EweMove pride themselves on their range of unique customer service propositions, with customers not required to pay upfront fees or sneaky hidden charges along with a ‘No Sale –No Fee’ promise which forms their ‘Happy Sale Guarantee’. For vendors this means that they are not tied into long contracts and can walk away at any time without being charged a penny!
EweMove is rated ‘5 Star’ and ‘Excellent by their customers on the independent review platform Trustpilot.
For anyone wondering what their home is worth in your Local Reach area, the EweMove website features a free online valuation tool that provides an instant valuation report.

Mortgages for the Self Employed
Getting a mortgage as a self-employed individual can present some challenges compared to traditionally employed borrowers. However, it is still very possible to obtain a mortgage if you are self-employed. Here are some factors that can influence the ease of obtaining a mortgage:
1. Documentation and proof of income: As a self-employed person, you will need to provide documentation to prove your income. This can include SA302’s, bank statements, or potentially accountant-certified accounts. Having organized and up-to-date financial records can make the process smoother.
2. Income stability and history: Lenders typically prefer to see a consistent income stream and a track record of self-employment. Some lenders may require a minimum of two years of selfemployment history, although options may be available for those with a shorter track record.
3. Affordability assessment: Lenders will assess your ability to afford mortgage repayments based on your income and expenditure. They may evaluate your net profit or salary/dividends as the basis for affordability calculations. Demonstrating a healthy income relative to your debt obligations is crucial for any mortgage application.
4. Credit History: Your credit history plays a significant role in mortgage applications. Lenders will review your credit report to assess your repayment history, outstanding debts maintaining a good credit score is beneficial for mortgage approval but there are lenders who will look at some credit blemishes.
5. Deposit and loan-to-value ratio: Lenders may have specific requirements for the deposit amount (loan-to-value ratio) for self-employed borrowers. Depending on factors such as credit history, income stability, and lender policies, you may be required to provide a larger deposit.
While it may require a bit more effort, obtaining a mortgage as a self-employed individual is certainly feasible and something Liberty Money do day in day out. Consulting with mortgage broker who specialise in self-employed mortgages can provide valuable guidance and increase your chances of finding suitable mortgage options so let Liberty Money take the stress away and we will do the work for you and guide you through the application process, and connect you with lenders who are more familiar with self-employed borrowers.

Lounge Aid to Raise Money for Wells Vineyard Foodbank This Summer

Fosso Lounge is holding a series of fundraising events during July to raise muchneeded funds for Wells Vineyard Foodbank. They are part of Lounge Aid, an annual fundraising initiative which sees Lounge staff competing to reach the highest fundraising target. The teams have raised an impressive £77,000 across all their Lounge sites for a wide number of local charities and community groups.
Sue Marland, Senior Pastor at Wells Vineyard Church and Manager of the Foodbank, said, “Our clients are referred to us by official agencies such as Job Centres, doctors’ surgeries, schools and social workers, but we receive no government funding to support our work. Many people are astonished to learn that we are now spending around £2,000 each month on shopping to supplement the tins and packets that people put in the donation bins at Waitrose, Santander and Morrisons. We are dependent on donations and the occasional grant to fund our work. Community fundraising events like these are a lifeline for the Foodbank.”
The list of events in July include:

July 2nd: Mini market day
July 6th: Charity Quiz Night
July 22nd: Big Walk to Frome

July 20th: Plant Your Own Seeds
