Browns say… Be Prepared
As the year continues to creep forward and as a country we soon start thinking about Christmas! I know I have seen shop displays already and social media is reminding us that it is only X days till Christmas. The one thing we all rely on at Christmas is our oven or cooker, and what we find every year is that, at the last minute, customers are worrying about their oven or phoning us for repairs on faults that have been needed for ages.
So why not tackle this early and call us for your repair or replacement. We can repair most makes of electric ovens or cookers and we supply new in both electric and gas. (We use a Gas Safe engineer for the gas work.*) The same applies to hobs.
And it’s also tumble drier season! (Although I think this summer has been that anyway!) Tumble driers are now much more efficient than they used to be. Have you got an old dryer? Are you concerned about energy costs? Then why not look at replacing your old dryer with a new energy efficient model. At the moment, some of the Bosch Heat Pump Tumble Dryers are coming with a five-year parts and labour guarantee, making them excellent value and a A+++ rating too.
Bosch washing machines continue to be our best seller, simple to use and reliable, many models are also coming with a five-year parts and labour guarantee.
And finally, just in case you don’t love washing up, especially at Christmas, we can supply a great range of dishwashers including integrated ones, and of course will always be available for repairs.
You can rely on us, your local family business.
*Charged separately.

First Class Retirement Living At Sandford Station
Nestled at the foot of the Mendip Hills, Sandford Station is a rural retirement village set in twelve acres of beautiful North Somerset countryside.
With the former Sandford and Banwell railway station as its focal point, the beautifully landscaped site has a range of purpose-built one, two and three bedroom apartments.
Each self-contained apartment has been created to blend practicality with ease of living. Wide doorways open onto generous hallways to allow easy access to the light and airy interiors. Clever floorplans include design features that make the best use of space, such as the twin doors of a Jack and Jill bathroom to create en-suite facilities. Storage has not been overlooked with built-in wardrobes and closet space throughout.
Step outside your apartment and become part of a friendly and welcoming community where you’ll have the opportunity to expand your social circles and explore new interests and hobbies. Sandford Station really does offer the best of both worlds – on-site amenities and activities so you can enjoy a full and active retirement; yet peaceful enough for those days when you just want to sit back and enjoy the tranquillity of the birds singing in the nearby apple orchards.
Sandford Station is owned and operated by the St Monica Trust, a Bristol-based charity providing accommodation, care and support for older people in Bristol and the surrounding areas. Across all of our retirement villages and care homes we are committed to communities where older people flourish by providing opportunities for our residents to enjoy treasured relationships, exercise choice and feel valued.

Hallowe’en Howlers…or Not? Graham Rogers, OvenGleamers
A bit of fun this month from OvenGleamers – do you know which of these are true or which are not ie Howlers?!
1. The hydrochloric acid of the human digestive process is so strong a corrosive that it easily can eat its way through a cotton handkerchief and even through iron. But it does not endanger the walls of the stomach, which are protected by a film of sticky mucus (yuk!). Howler? No this is true!
2. One of the first things we learned in a Chemistry lab is how to light a Bunsen burner, a gas burner used to heat solutions of chemicals. The eminent German chemist Robert W. Bunsen invented the Bunsen burner. Howler? Yes…Robert W Bunsen did not invent it, he merely popularized its use.
3. Most plant pollen is highly inflammable. It will ignite and explode when placed on an extremely hot surface. In the early days of modern theatre, artificial lightning was produced by throwing pollen grains of the club moss onto a hot shovel. Howler? No, it’s not.
4. Human skulls have been used as drinking cups throughout history. CroMagnon (the first early modern) man scraped away muscles and flesh and hacked off and smooth the lower portion of the skull. (It is not known whether these skulls belonged to revered ancestors or hated enemies.) In the Middle Ages, the skulls of saints were used as drinking cups on ceremonial occasions. Lord Byron served wine to his visitors in Newstead Abbey in a human skull that he found in the cloisters there. A Howler or Not? Not.

Reducing Your Mortgage Borrowing to Prepare for Interest Rate Rises
As mortgage advisor, we understand the concerns many homeowners have about potential interest rate rises and the impact it can have on mortgage payments when a low fixed rate comes to an end. The good news is that there are practical steps you can take to reduce your borrowing on your mortgage, giving you more financial stability when rates go up. Here are some valuable strategies to consider:
1. Regular Mortgage Reviews: Take the time to review your mortgage annually with your mortgage advisor. This allows you to stay on top of changes in your financial situation and your property value, presenting opportunities to reduce your borrowing.
2. Increase Repayments: If possible, consider increasing your monthly mortgage repayments. By paying more than the minimum required, you’ll chip away at the principal faster, leading to lower interest costs over time.
3. Accelerated Payment Frequency: Switching from monthly to bi-weekly or weekly mortgage payments can significantly reduce the time it takes to pay off your mortgage and save you money on interest. (Check with your lender the best way to do this)
4. Lump Sum Payments: Whenever you come into extra money, such as a bonus or inheritance,
consider making lump sum payments towards your mortgage. This will directly reduce the principal amount, resulting in overall interest savings.
5. Refinancing Options: Explore the possibility of refinancing your mortgage, especially if interest rates have decreased since you took out your loan or if your credit score has improved. Refinancing at a lower rate can lead to substantial long-term savings.
6. Consider Variable and Fixed Rates: Understand the pros and cons of variable and fixed-rate mortgages. Depending on the economic outlook, a variable rate might be a better choice if you want to prepare for potential interest rate fluctuations.
7. Financial Planning: Engage in comprehensive financial planning to enhance your overall financial health. A well-prepared budget and emergency savings can act as a safety net during uncertain economic times.
By adopting these strategies, you can proactively reduce your borrowing on your mortgage before renewal, providing a cushion against interest rate rises. As a responsible homeowner, taking early action can lead to significant savings and greater peace of mind. Speak to one of our advisors today on 01275 244360
Extra Room - A practical and affordable alternative
As property prices continue to skyrocket, finding affordable and practical solutions for our space needs has become more critical than ever. One such innovative solution is renting a storage room from www.extraroom.store. This option not only provides a cost-effective alternative to moving but also brings several additional benefits that make it an attractive choice for many homeowners.
One of the most compelling reasons to consider renting a storage room is the financial savings. Moving to a larger house involves significant costs, including higher mortgage payments, property taxes, and moving expenses. On the other hand, renting a storage unit from ExtraRoom.Store allows you to declutter your home without the financial burden of upgrading to a bigger property. By freeing up a room in your house, you can create additional living space for activities such as a home office, guest room, or playroom for the kids.
Furthermore, many people consider garden sheds as an alternative storage solution. However, sheds come with their own set of drawbacks. They can be damp, which poses a risk to stored items, especially those sensitive to moisture like documents, electronics, and clothing. Additionally, garden sheds take up valuable outdoor space that could otherwise be used for leisure, gardening, or entertaining.
ExtraRoom.Store provides secure, dry, and conveniently located storage options, ensuring your belongings are kept in optimal conditions. The flexibility of rental terms means you can choose the duration that best suits your needs, whether it’s for a short-term project or a long-term storage solution.
In conclusion, www.extraroom.store offers a practical and affordable alternative to the daunting and costly process of moving to a larger home. By renting a storage room, you can maximize the space you already have, protect your belongings, and preserve your outdoor areas, making it a smart choice for those looking to enhance their living space without breaking the bank.

Planning to upgrade your broadband?
As companies such as Openreach/Gigaclear/Truespeed and Virgin roll out their full fibre networks, we thought it would be sensible to advise people on the situation with their landline phones.
We are finding that some providers (but not always) are now expecting their customers to plug their landline phone handset directly into the router after agreeing a new package (with a different router being supplied), as the traditional BT master socket and extensions are becoming redundant. In some cases, this is not explained to the customer, so a new router arrives, which they fit, only to find that their landline no longer works. It is usually a case of unplugging the landline from the wall socket and then plugging it into the appropriate slot on the back of the router. This is not always made clear by the provider when you sign up.
Plusnet is also now not allowing landline contracts on upgrading to full fibre, so if you are a Plusnet customer and want to upgrade, you may need to move over to another provider such as BT/Sky or TalkTalk which do still support having a landline number.
Some things to consider if you upgrade to a full fibre (up to 1000mbps) connection:
1. A new cable will be installed to your house by the provider’s engineers.
2. The installation may not happen in a place that is convenient to you, so we recommend always being there when the engineers start work
3. The new system will not utilise your existing phone sockets and extensions
4. Telephone handset will need to be plugged into the router (or a small sub-box)
5. Some people will need to replace multiple corded handsets with a new cordless phone system. We must stress that generally installations go very well, and the above is just a guide to be aware of. We don’t want to put anybody off upgrading their connection to a better service.
Should you be concerned about any aspect of upgrading your internet connection, we are available to advise on the best way forward. We offer a service where we come to you and can discuss all the options available.

Fast healing from sports injuries using modern technology
“I was out of pain after four days and able to do a triathlon”
Perrin Haydon-Rowe is a company director in her early fifties who lives with her family in ‘the smallest city in England’. As a keen sportswoman, fast recovery from pain and injury is important to Perrin.
“I first heard about Somerset Health Practice from many of my Crossfit friends and also parents from school – and I’ve been going to Matthew for two years. He’s treated me for several issues, including knee pain following a rupture of the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) and calf sprain ahead of a triathlon.
“I had previously seen a physiotherapist but I was open to different treatment methods. At the clinic, I have had ultrasound scans for diagnosis, along with the technology of Laser and PEMF machines plus traditional massage, manipulation and acupuncture.
“My most recent injury was a nasty calf sprain that prevented me from training for a triathlon – swimming cycling and running. I saw Matthew four times over a week and rested between sessions. The pain disappeared following the final session and has not returned.”
Matthew explains, “PEMF (pulsed electromagnetic field) therapy can heal injuries, fractures and pain amazingly quickly. I combined this with Laser therapy, which prompts the body’s own healing mechanisms to work faster and more efficiently. I was delighted that Perrin was so quickly out of pain and able to do her triathlon.”
Perrin adds, “I would recommend Matthew because he really understands biomechanics
and the body - and the role of the brain and mental state in fitness. He is exceptionally skilled at identifying problems and solving them with a variety of traditional and ultra- modern therapies.”

Together we can make change that saves lives
As a listening volunteer, you can make a real difference to someone’s future.
You’ll receive full training to prepare you for the kinds of conversations you’ll have. And when you start out, you’ll have a mentor with you, to give you confidence you’re doing the right thing. Our listening volunteers are there for anyone who needs emotional support. You will learn new skills and the confidence to use them, including understanding people and managing difficult conversations. We are a small friendly, supportive branch.
