Carpet underlay

Any carpet fitted onto gripper needs an underlay to fill in the gap and bring the carpet in the room up to the same level as it is over the gripper. Gripper is the wooden strip with pins round the edge of the room – in doorways you usually have a threshold strip, often metal, that joins the flooring on both sides together, often called a doorbar. The carpet is stretched onto the gripper and tucked in between the gripper and the skirting. Keeping the carpet stretched reduces wear, which is why it is better to have an expensive carpet professionally fitted so the tension is right across and along the carpet, and even over the whole floor.

The quality of an underlay is not necessarily measured by how high it is. A denser underlay will perform better than one that is too soft and squashy, which will flatten more quickly with wear. If you have underfloor heating, there will always be a trade off between the comfort of the underlay and how much it lets the heat through, so underfloor heating underlays are often quite thin.
There are many different types of carpet underlay available, each with its own advantages and disadvantages. The most common types include polyurethane (PU) foam, rubber crumb and felt. PU is the most popular type of carpet underlay and it comes is many different thicknesses and qualities. A good one will feel quite resilient between your fingers and cheap ones will feel soft and floppy.

PU underlays incorporate recycled materials as does crumb rubber, which is made from recycled rubber tyres. Crumb rubber is quite dense and it is good to use on stairs so you get a good definition over the nosing. Felt underlay has been around for years and it also uses recycled materials. It is also used with rubber crumb to make a dual underlay that is good for woven carpets. There is also a new underlay made from PET that comes from recycled plastic bottles, which is quite firm under foot.

Find your Calm!
Pushing through…over-riding stress or anxiety… ’normalising’ tension…
Our 21st century way of living teaches us to keep going regardless. There can also be a sense of pride in ‘not giving in’ or feeling guilty if we take time out to rest (it’s lazy, right?) Logically, you know that’s very unhealthy, and yet the hamster wheel of your life keeps spinning!
Come and find your Calm! Gentle, holistic yoga is rooted in the traditional, therapeutic “Hatha” style, with the emphasis on soothing the nervous system, re-training the mind to be more focussed (and therefore calmer) and supporting your physical body to function well.
Local Holistic Yoga teacher Sarena Mason says, “Prioritising our physical and mental health is vital – health is wealth after all. My life is never ‘perfect’ but getting onto my mat for as little as 15 minutes really shifts my mood, eases out tension and brings me back to a place of balance.”
Six-week Holistic Yoga courses start again from w/c November 6th. Plus an afternoon retreat, “Inner Peace & Stillness”, combines Restorative Yoga, Chant & Sound, on Sunday December 3rd. For further details go to www.birchmoon.co.uk or call Sarena on 07974340580.

We’ll also have our coffee shop, with hot drinks, homemade cakes and light lunches, in aid of Weston Foodbank. And a selection of handcrafted items will be for sale.

Prepare for Windows 11 23H2 update and please heed our warnings about scammers
By the time you read this, Microsoft should have released the new major update to Windows 11 which is known as 23H2. We would advise that you check your “Windows Update” section within the Settings cog on all Windows 11 computers to update to this. As usual there will be some new features, alongside a raft of security and reliability updates. New features include an AI based help tool called Co-pilot which promises to get answers to complex questions. Some computers due to age cannot take Windows 11 or even this latest update, so if this is the case for your computer, we would advise upgrading. We can help with this, so please see our advert on this page for contact details.

We often speak to customers about the risks of being scammed but the worrying fact is that even though people are aware, the scammers seem to be one step ahead. Our company is often called by worried customers who have been advised to have their computers checked after it has been remotely accessed by fraudsters (with the customer’s permission!) The scam can start by a phone call that pretends to be from a national company – they may know your name and other details, which when they quote, the guard is often let down. Other times, a seemingly genuine message pops up on the screen, usually after some social media interaction and tells the unnerved viewer that their computer or various accounts are going to imminently close down. The fact is that although many people are aware of scams, they seem to be unable to deal with these situations, so due to the frantic nature of the scam often allow remote access to their computers and unwittingly in to their bank accounts. We encourage people not to get into polite small talk with these people, but simply hang up the phone when it becomes apparent that these callers want to get onto your computer remotely. There is no justified reason that anyone other than your own trusted IT support would remote control your computer. Please get in touch if you feel that you need any help with this. Another thing to remind you of is that should your device become faulty, it is possible that you could lose your precious documents, photos, music and so on, so we would strongly advise you to backup your files to either a local backup drive, or possibly some cloud system. We have seen a spate of older computers fail recently, without warning, and lots of important files were lost, so please don’t bury your head in the sand, but get yourself a backup solution. If you need any help with this, please get in touch.

The fence that repairs itself
If you scratch or cut Colourfence, the ingenious zinc element in the Zincalume steel reacts with moisture to form a protective barrier to prevent any corrosion with no action needed from you.
STRONG, SECURE & BUILT TO LAST!
Colourfence are transforming gardens across Somerset!
It may do “exactly what it says on the tin” but let’s face it, treating a timber fence can never be called fun! In fact, owning a timber fence isn’t much fun either with costly, time consuming maintenance and repairs almost every year.
Finally, the alternative to timber fencing…our fence goes up and stays up, resisting wind gusts of up to 130mph!

Colourfence fencing solutions are made from innovative Colorbond steel, virtually maintenance free with an occasional wash down with water to keep it looking as good as new - so you never need to pick up that paintbrush again!, Guaranteed not to rot, warp, chip or peel for 25 years.

Available in a variety of heights and colours with or without trellis, our skilled installation team will make short work of transforming your garden.
The best news is the pricing is just as attractive, starting costs are in line with comparable traditional systems but offer the ongoing peace of mind that your investment will continue to save time and money year after year.
For those of us who want a low maintenance garden, Colourfence promises a lifetime of hassle-free enjoyment.

In our showroom you’ll find a selection of tables, shelving and homeware, as well as work by local artists and locally produced honey and wax. On top of all that, we stock a huge range of reclaimed and locally sourced timber, everything from pallet wood and construction grade softwood to live edged Alder, Ash and Oak slabs and mantelpiece sized beams. If you’re thinking of starting a project it’s definitely worth paying us a visit!

Our friendly team would be happy to talk you through the design process to create a bespoke piece of furniture that’ll fit your house perfectly, or help you select the timber that is right for you.

Pond Life at Cheddar First School

The Wild Cheddar project, a community group that is part of Cheddar Community Partnership CIC, has completed a makeover of the disused pond at Cheddar First School. Funding support was provided by Cheddar Parish Council and Cheddar First School Friends, Parents and Teachers Association (FPTA). Cheddar Valley Men’s Shed also helped, by laser etching a new wooden project.
Headteacher Suzi Smith said “It’s wonderful to have our school pond back in action. It will be a great resource for our science curriculum.

Winscombe Folk Club supporting Winscombe Show 2023

Local band Ochre Trails was first on stage and played a beautiful set of songs and tunes. We shared the stage with local DJ TAV who was master of ceremonies making all the right PA announcements suncream, hydration, beer etc.
The Old Fox Band morphed from one decade to another with a variety of members, but always led by the indomitable Pete Thompson from Magenta and WFC stalwart. Oli (AKA Nigel Carson) did a short set at the end of the day to wind up proceedings, but since all the beer had been sold, there wasn’t much point in carrying on into the evening! Maybe next year.
Winscombe Folk Club was pleased to support another major village event. Nigel Carson.

Transforming the pain of Tendonitis and Plantar Fasciitis

“My shoulders were so painful that I couldn’t get my arms into my sleeves. My GP diagnosed calcific tendonitis – but the treatments suggested seemed horrific with little chance of success. What to do? I couldn’t go on in pain, depending on anti-inflammatories.” This was the dilemma faced by Liz Law, 67, a retired administrator from Somerton and keen walker.
“Then I remembered that a few years ago, Matthew Jackson had completely cured painful inflammation on my knee with just three sessions of Shockwave therapy. So I got in touch with Somerset Health Practice and again had fantastic results. It took a few sessions to treat both shoulders but I could feel an improvement after every Shockwave treatment.

I wouldn’t hesitate to go back to the clinic. Matthew and his partner Becky have so much integrity, they don’t dramatise or promise unrealistic results and have invested in a lot of equipment to treat many conditions. It’s a very positive place to go.”

Retirement Mortgages
There are so many more traditional repayment and interest-only mortgage options available to customers aged 55 and over, there’s not just ‘Equity Release’. A number of mortgage lenders will allow customers to borrow money to age 80 and beyond with some specialist lenders having no maximum age at all.
Mainstream (non-equity release) mortgages can be used to release equity in your home for almost any purpose, they can also be used to raise funds for home improvements, debt consolidation, purchase a second home and more.

The main difference between a traditional mortgage and equity release is that the maximum loan amount is based on your income in retirement which can be made up of a state/private pension as well as income from almost any source. With people working for longer, many lenders will also take employed and self-employed income well beyond state pension age.
With non-equity release mortgages, a customer will need to make monthly interest payments as a result, the original loan amount will not
increase as it does with a ‘rolled-up Equity Release’ mortgage, so the equity within the property is protected.
Retirement Interest only mortgages (RIOs) were introduced by the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) in March 2018 as an alternative to Equity Release and as a secured lending choice for customers aged 55 and over regardless of whether they are retired or still working. RIOs are similar to a standard interest only mortgage, the main difference being that there is no term - the mortgage will run indefinitely and only repaid on the customer(s) entering long term care or pass away. RIO mortgages can be repaid early in the same way mainstream mortgages are there are also fixed rates available.
Charlotte Director at HMC Funding said “We speak to lots of customers who believe Equity Release is their only option, when in reality the mortgage market has changed over recent years, we are seeing more retirement products coming onto the market and it is great for those clients to have more options available to them and not entering Equity Release too early and when they don’t need too.”

Lions Roar 2023 Competition –Children Changing the World

Lion President Sylvia says Cheddar Vale Lions Club are delighted to be sponsoring Fairlands Middle School in Cheddar for the Lions Roar competition this year. As a club it’s exciting to get involved with this youth programme, whereby children are given the opportunity ‘to think big and create world changing ideas.
The Lions Roar Competition is an inspirational and fun learning experience, run in partnership with the education company, 8billionideas. The competition allows children to discover how to use their imagination in exciting new ways. Children gain all important life skills from taking part in the competition. Aimed at 7-11 year olds, children learn how to work together in teams, develop their communication and presentation skills, whilst boosting their self-confidence and self-esteem.
There are around 27,000 pupils taking part in over 130 schools sponsored by Lions Clubs from across the British Isles. If you would like to know more about the Lions Roar competition, please view the website www.lions-roar.com/
