Massage Therapy for Skin and Mental Health

If you are trying to improve your health, there are always some therapeutic forms of healing that you can explore. Massage happens to be one of the best ways that you can get total body healing, which provides health benefits across the board. Not only does it make you feel better physically, but you can also count on massage therapy to help you with things like your skin and your mind.

Massage De-Stresses the Skin

Eliminating stress is often the biggest goal of people’s self-care routines. When stress adds up, it can make your skin inflamed and you might even experience breakouts and other forms of irritation. When you get a massage, it lowers the cortisol levels in your body so that you are able to alleviate tension and distress. This provides a sense of calmness in your body, and these benefits carry over into your skin.

It Stimulates Bloodflow

When your blood flow increases, you will have the chance to experience more vibrant and healthy skin. This flow can decrease blockages that lead to acne and irritation. All of your major organs also depend on blood flow, so this massage can help you achieve total body health like few other therapeutic remedies can. Your skin will have a natural ready glow because your blood flow is increasing oxygen and making it healthier as a whole. When paired with things like a sea salt soak, you will be able to get relief from pain and discomfort that has built up in your skin over time.

Massage Acts as a Detox

Getting a therapeutic massage can also help you get rid of impurities in your skin and your body. It breaks up scar tissue and promotes your body’s natural detox response. Many people have skin issues because their pores are clogged and they have impurities in their skin.

It Helps With Pain Relief

When your skin is tense and stressed out, you are more likely to experience discomfort. People get massage therapy to help with acute and chronic pain of all types. By receiving regular massages, your skin will be relaxed and less tense, and you will appreciate the comfort levels that you feel.

There are a variety of mental health benefits that come with massage therapy. The mind and body are interconnected, so getting regular massages can actually help your brain operate at peak levels.

You Can Decrease Stress Levels

Stress that builds up over time can have an adverse effect on your mind. You might find that your brain gets cluttered and noisy, to the point that it is hard to deal with. Massage therapy can provide remarkable stress relief benefits. When it lowers the cortisol levels in your body, you will be less stressed and feel like a weight has been lifted from your shoulders.

Massage Helps You Think Clearly

If you ever find yourself struggling to focus on tasks or complete them, it might be because you have an over-active mind. Getting massage therapy can help you stick to tasks without getting distracted and letting your roaming mind get the best of you. The calmness that massage brings gives people the presence of mind to live in the moment and thrive in interpersonal and professional lives.

It Helps You Sleep Better at Night

When you are walking around with as much stress in the daytime, you won’t struggle as much to get to sleep at night. Lower cortisol levels and stress can help with your insomnia, and may allow you to get fuller sleep. If you are getting full sleep cycles every time you go to bed, your mind will be restored when you wake up in the morning. This helps you to eliminate brain fog and you will know that your brain is firing on all cylinders.

Blood Flow Is Great for the Brain

You will also benefit from massage due to the sheer increase in blood flow that it brings. This increase in blood flow is not only good for your body – it’s also great for your brain. Your mind will be better able to make neural connections, and you will have less of a struggle thinking and remembering things.

It Alleviates Depression and Anxiety

It’s also important that you stick to a massage routine because it can help you with your depression and anxiety issues. If you are a person who lives in a constant state of anxiety, massage therapy can be one of the best remedies for you.

People notice positive effects and are less likely to deal with social anxiety, seasonal depression, and other issues. You will be less stressed as a whole, and better able to cope with the mental and emotional stressors that come along with life.

Even better, massage therapy is all-natural, so you won’t have to become dependent on antidepressants or antianxiety medication. Instead, you will experience the natural healing that massage therapy brings with none of the side effects that come with medication.

Learn The Types of Massage

If you are going to truly experience the health benefits that massage brings to your skin and mind, make sure that you learn which types are available. There are lots of different massage options available that you can explore.

Some of the main types of massages that you might want to try to include:

Thai Massage. Swedish massage. Sports Massage. Shiatsu massage. Reflexology Massage

Knowing the differences between these various types of massages will help you find a massage therapist that provides it. Schedule an appointment with one of these therapists to learn as much as you can about each type.

Thai massage is great for stimulating blood flow and improving your immune system. Sports massage is excellent for improving functionality and protecting your joints. Massages are typically broken down into 30-minute to 90-minute sessions.

Learn about the credentials of your massage therapist so that you’re getting credible, quality service that will improve your health and deliver the benefits that you’re seeking.

How Thai massage helps relieve stress & tension

If you’ve ever had a truly authentic Thai massage, you will have found that it can work wonders on tight, knotted muscles and layers of tension in your body.

To understand why, we need to look at how muscles work and how tension arises.

You’ve probably seen pictures of skeletal muscles portrayed as bundles of fibres. Each fibre is made up of a huge number of muscle cells, which contain thousands of tiny, stacked structures called sarcomeres.

These work like microscopic ratchets during contraction which release to relax the muscle. Sometimes, this ratchet mechanism doesn’t completely release, causing the muscle to retain

tension. This can result in those uncomfortable knots and tightness!

By manipulating the muscle tissue, Thai massage helps to release all those stuck ratchets, which then eases the tension and discomfort you’ve been feeling.

If you would like to experience an authentic Thai massage for yourself, why not book an appointment with us?

All our therapists come from Thailand. They are fully qualified and experienced, and you can ask your therapist to focus on any problem areas you have.

Traditional Thai massage is performed through fabric, without oil, but our Signature massage combines all of the traditional techniques with a little oil for those that prefer it.

Movement and Mental Health

We all know about the benefits of exercise on our physical health, but what can do it for our mental health?

Remove the feel-good endorphins that come along with exercise because let’s be honest some people just really hate exercise. Daily movement can have such an impact on our mental health with improvements too.

• Improved mood

• Reduced Anxiety

• Lower Stress Levels

• Lower Inflammation

• Increased Memory

• Improved Concentration

• Increased Confidence

• Improved Sleep

• Better Social Connections

Now, it doesn’t even have to be 60 minutes of hard exercise, even just 15 minutes of daily movement has been shown to have the benefits above.

It doesn’t even have to be a planned exercise, just getting outside for a walk doing something that makes you move instead of sitting will help those benefits come through.

Movement should be available to everyone, and to a certain extent it is, but people tend to see daily movement and read exercise class or gym.

Then because of whatever their circumstances are they don’t get involved, because let’s be honest going into a gym surrounded by budgies and gym bunnies can be intimidating, and that is perfectly fine because that is the way it is.

However, there is always a way, yes a gym can be expensive but have a Google as a lot of councils will put on classes, etc for either free or a heavily reduced rate.

Also, you can get on the local social groups as there are always walking or running groups that you could get involved in and do it for free but also have that group environment and support network.

Taking care of our mental health isn’t a luxury, if we can take care of that then taking care of the physical side of things becomes easier, if you are in a better place head wise then taking control of the other stuff just becomes a little easier, life gets better.

It doesn’t have to be a big exercise routine or gym visits, you can always get round to that at some point if you want it too but the most important thing to be doing is moving, this time of the year is the best time to start building these habits.

The nights are lighter, it’s a bit warmer, get these habits started now and it will be easier when the winter comes. Be kind to you.

Some tips on moving more

Find moments for everyday movement – we can find ourselves sitting or standing around a lot, using that dead time to move a bit, brushing our teeth, and waiting for the kettle to boil, little bits.

Set small achievable goals – slowly take yourself into this especially if you have not been doing any exercise for a while, no point going full on and then having to stop because you’ve got injured or everything hurts too much. By setting small goals you have more of a chance of achieving them and then becoming more positive with them.

Take a break from sitting – a lot of you out there reading this probably sit down a lot for work, sat at a desk for quite a lot of the day, take breaks get up and move around, set an alarm just get up and get moving, at the end of the day make sure you spend some time stretching out as well. If you are sitting there thinking “what are you on about why should I stretch?”, look at your pet or someone’s pet, the first thing they do when they move is stretch.

Find the fun – remember what it was like as a kid, you constantly were moving and doing something you enjoyed, kicking a ball around, riding a bike you just did it because it was fun, why should we lose that because we got older, kick a ball around with your kids if you have them, do something that makes you smile, it doesn’t matter what it is.

Don’t know where to start, are in a rut, and need help getting out of it?

Istanbul

The Old City

Istanbul’s Old City, is a mesmerising destination that vividly narrates the saga of centuries past. As a firsttime tourist, I found myself immersed in a vibrant tapestry of history, culture, and architectural marvels, each corner echoing tales from the Byzantine and Ottoman eras. Here’s a glimpse into what awaits you should you travel in my footsteps around this fascinating part of Istanbul.

Hagia Sophia

A Masterpiece of Byzantine Architecture

Start your journey at Hagia Sophia, an architectural wonder that has stood the test of time since 537 AD. Originally a Byzantine cathedral, it was converted into a mosque in 1453, and today serves as a museum. As you step inside, the grandeur of its massive dome, stunning mosaics, and marble pillars will leave you in awe. The blend of Christian and Islamic elements symbolises the city’s rich, multicultural heritage.

The Blue Mosque

A Testament to Ottoman Grandeur

Just a stone’s throw away from the Hagia Sophia lies the Sultan Ahmed Mosque, popularly known as the Blue Mosque due to its magnificent blue Iznik tiles. Built in the early 17th century, this mosque is a working place of worship, so modest attire is required. Its six minarets, cascading domes, and tranquil courtyard create a serene atmosphere, offering a perfect spot for reflection and admiration of Ottoman architectural prowess.

Topkapi Palace

The Heart of the Ottoman Empire Topkapi Palace, the erstwhile residence of Ottoman sultans for over 400 years. Wander through its opulent rooms, lush courtyards, and the Harem, where the sultan’s family lived. The museum houses an extraordinary collection of treasures, including jewels, weapons, and sacred relics. The views of the Bosphorus from the palace gardens are breathtaking, providing a sense of the strategic importance.

The Grand Bazaar A Shopper’s Paradise

No visit to Istanbul is complete without experiencing the Grand Bazaar, one of the largest and oldest covered markets in the world. With over 4,000 shops spread across 61 streets, it’s a labyrinth of colours, scents, and sounds. From jewellery, spices, and textiles to ceramics and antiques, the bazaar offers a sensory overload and a perfect opportunity to practice your bargaining skills.

Basilica Cistern

The Underground Wonder

For a change of scenery, descend into the Basilica Cistern, an underground water reservoir built in the 6th century. As you walk along the dimly lit pathways, the reflections of the 336 marble columns in the still waters create an eerie yet enchanting ambiance. Don’t miss the Medusa heads used as column bases, adding a touch of mythological intrigue.

The Spice Bazaar

Aromatic Delights

And finally, the Spice Bazaar, also known as the Egyptian Bazaar, is another sensory feast. The air here is filled with the rich aromas of exotic spices, dried fruits, nuts, and sweets. It’s an excellent place to sample and purchase some traditional Turkish delights and spices to take home.

Sultanahmet Square

A Lovely Place to Stroll

Take a leisurely stroll around Sultanahmet Square, the historic heart of the Old City. The square, surrounded by the aforementioned landmarks, is ideal for soaking in the vibrant atmosphere. Street vendors, cafés, and the constant flow of people create a lively ambiance, making it a perfect spot to unwind and reflect on your day’s adventures.

Istanbul’s Old City is a captivating blend of ancient history and vibrant culture. Each landmark not only tells a unique story but also offers a glimpse into the city’s illustrious past. As you explore its streets and monuments, you’ll find that Istanbul is not just a city to see, but a place to experience deeply, leaving you with memories that will last a lifetime.

Turkish Baklava

This syrup-soaked dish is spiced with cinnamon and cardamom, with a blend of pecans, pistachios and walnuts

Ingredients

200g butter, plus extra for greasing

200g pistachios

50g walnuts

50g pecans

3 tbsp honey

2 x 270g pack filo pastry

For the syrup

250g golden caster sugar

50g honey

2 tsp orange blossom water

½ tsp ground cinnamon

¼ tsp ground cardamom

Method

Step 1

Heat oven to 180C/160C fan and grease a 21cm x 21cm square cake tin with butter. Chop the nuts into small pieces using a food processor. Put them into a bowl, stir in the honey and a pinch of salt and set aside.

Step 2

Melt the butter in a pan over a low heat. Cut the first pack of pastry sheets so that they fit the tin. Put one sheet in the tin and brush with the melted butter. Lay another sheet on top and brush with butter again, until the whole pack is used up.

Step 3

Spread the honey and nut mixture over the pastry and press down lightly. Open the other pack of filo, cut in half and continue the layering and buttering process. When you reach the last sheet pour any remaining butter over the top to finish. Cut deep lines into the pastry to create either squares or diamond shapes then bake in the oven for 20 mins.

Step 4

Reduce the heat to 150C/130C fan and bake for a further 45 mins. While the baklava cooks put all the syrup ingredients into a saucepan and add 200ml water. Heat gently until the sugar has dissolved then boil the mixture for 8–10 mins or until it has reduced to the consistency of runny honey.

Step 5

When the baklava comes out of the oven, pour the warm syrup over the top, allowing it to run into the lines you have cut. Leave it to soak in and serve when it’s completely cold.

Could Employment Law Change Under Labour?

Prior to the election, Labour set out their proposed changes to employment law. In this article, we’ll look at some of the more significant proposed changes and what they could mean for employers.

Parental leave & unfair dismissal rights from day one

Currently, an employee needs at least two years’ service before they can claim for unfair dismissal (except for specific situations that are considered automatically unfair). This makes it easier for employers to dismiss someone if they think things aren’t working out, without having to follow a full and fair process. This is sometimes known as a ‘short service dismissal’. Labour say they want to remove the two year limit, allowing employees to claim unfair dismissal from day one of employment.

This would force employers to assess the risks of a potential claim, even for new hires within their probationary period. Labour have also suggested that they would like to make parental leave a day one right as well, so there is no minimum service required before an employee can get maternity or paternity pay, etc.

Making sick pay available to all

Labour want to remove the 3 day qualifying period, so that workers don’t have to be off sick for 4 or more days to get statutory sick pay (SSP). They also want to remove the lower earnings threshold, that require someone to earn at least £123 per week on average to be eligible for SSP. This means that people

taking a single day off sick would get paid, which could make it more tempting for some workers to ‘pull a sickie’. Employers will need robust absence management processes.

Minimum wage & fair pay agreements

The National Living Wage is the minimum that a worker aged 21+ can earn per hour, and the National Minimum Wage is the minimum hourly rate for a worker aged between 18 and 20. There are different rates of pay for these bands, and Labour propose to remove the lower band and have all workers over 18 get no less than the National Living Wage.

This could push up the wage bill for employers that engage a lot of young people under 21. Labour have also said they will consult on designing ‘Fair Pay Agreements’. These are large-scale agreements defining a minimum wage across all employers

and employees in a given sector. Their proposal sounds similar to the ‘social plans’ in the EU, which define pay levels and termination compensation payments for each sector within an economy. We had something similar once before in the UK, with the ‘Wage Councils’ under the Wage Council Act 1945, which effectively ceased when Margaret Thatcher introduced the Wages Act 1986. At the moment, Labour are targeting the social care sector, but if enacted, employers may see this spread to other sectors.

Banning one-sided ‘zero hour’ contracts

There’s a lot of devil in the detail with this one. Labour wants to ban zero hour contracts where the employer is not obliged to offer work, but the worker must accept the work if offered.

Labour also wants to introduce the right to demand a contract based on your average hours over the past 12 weeks. There are a whole load of questions about how this might be implemented, and how the 12-week reference period is calculated, so we’ll have to wait and see the detail in any proposed legislation. This will definitely be something that could impact a lot of small businesses that use zero hour contracts.

Introduce a single ‘worker’ status

Under the Employment Rights Act 1996, we have three categories of worker; employees on a contract of employment, self-employed people running their own businesses, and ‘workers’ who fall somewhere in the middle. These ‘workers’ are people who are treated as self-employed contractors, but are actually providing a personal service to the employer and look like employees to an outside observer.

Labour want to remove the difference between ‘employee’ and ‘worker’, so that everyone has the same employment rights. This is easier said than done, because the difference between a ‘worker’ and a genuinely self-employed person is not always obvious, e.g. freelancers and single-person contractors who provide services to clients.

Union recognition & industrial action

Labour want to simplify the process of union recognition, making it easier for workers to unionise in their workplaces. This is likely to involve removing, or reducing, some of the current thresholds, for example requiring that at least 50% of workers vote in favour of unionising before an employer must recognise the union. Labour also wants to repeal legislation that they see as ‘red tape’ on union activity, such as the Trade Union Act 2016, the Minimum Service Levels (Strikes) Bill and the Conduct of Employment Agencies and Employment Businesses (Amendment) Regulations 2022.

In the 2nd half of 2024, the UK mortgage market faces high interest rates, cooling house prices, and stricter lending criteria. Buyers are expected to experience affordability challenges, while lenders adapt to regulatory changes. Increased competition among banks and fintech firms drives innovation in mortgage products and services.

Jacqui Priestley hears from Nigel Osgood at Financial Solutions (Home & Business) ltd how you can get ‘Remortgage Ready’.

Why YOU may need to remortgage

One of the primary reasons for remortgaging is that the initial term of a mortgage deal is ending. Typically, mortgages are offered with an initial period of two or five years. After this period, many lenders will move you to their default Standard Variable Rate (SVR), which could result in higher payments due to potentially higher interest rates compared to what is available elsewhere.

To avoid being moved to the default Standard Variable Rate, we’d always recommend that you get in touch with us, to look at your circumstances and guide you on when your existing term ends, and the options you have available, which may include the following:

• A Product Transfer – the option to switch to a new deal from your existing lender or

• A Remortgage – the option to transfer your mortgage to a new lender

There’s a vast range of deals out there, but the challenge is knowing which one is likely to help you meet your needs, and this is where the advice from a professional mortgage adviser is key to enable you to make an educated decision, rather than just accepting the first deal from your existing lender.

How to get remortgage ready

Ahead of your existing deal coming to an end, there are a few easy steps you can take which can help to make the next steps of your mortgage journey as smooth as possible.

• Plan ahead – timing is key – we aim to contact our clients 3–6 months ahead of their existing mortgage expiry date, to work together and find a solution that fits your specific needs. This may be reviewing Product Transfer options, or going for a Remortgage, which can require a few extra processes to be followed to get the deal that’s most aligned to your own mortgage goals.

• Plan your finances – just as for applying for your first mortgage, it pays to make sure your finances are truly in order. Check your credit score, don’t apply for any new credit, avoid any large purchases, avoid payday loans or overdrafts at all costs to boost your chances of quick acceptance for a remortgage.

It also helps to bear in mind an estimate of your existing property’s value – have a look around at property websites to get a good idea of recent market prices.

• Get your documents in order – just as for your first mortgage, documents will be required to prove your identity, current address and proof of income.

Save time by gathering your documents together upfront. This can include your last 3 months’ bank statements and payslips, proof of any bonuses, your latest P60 tax form, official ID (such as Passport) and

proof of your address, such as utility bills with your name and address visible.

• If you’re self-employed – you’ll need to show additional proof of income with three years history. You can aid your application by showing future workload and incoming revenue stream.

This should help to give you a good head start on having the key documents and info you need ahead of a remortgage.

1. Better Cash Flow Management: With accurate data, you can plan your expenses and investments more effectively, ensuring smooth operations.

Jacqui Priestley spends 5 minutes with Dan Foxell; entrepreneur, business owner, and all-around Pokémon expert

When did you know you wanted to become a business owner and entrepreneur?

I can’t pinpoint the exact moment, but early on, I had a vision of opening my own coffee shop. I understood that to bring this vision to life, I first needed to excel as a manager. Leading a team towards a shared goal, achieving success together, and having fun while doing it was my priority.

I’m proud to say that the store I managed became one of the best in the country, and that’s when I knew it was time to venture out on my own; it’s safe to say I ended up in a very different market though!

When and how did you become an expert in all things Pokémon?

Being called an expert in the Pokémon world is a huge accolade, I’m not sure if I could honour such a title! With over 1,000 Pokémon, more being added

and multiple formats, I’m sure I’ll be learning for many, many years to come.

My journey with Pokémon itself began when I was about 7 years old, my mum and grandma would buy me packs; I still remember getting my first game on the Game Boy and playing it religiously for years. Since then my knowledge has come from collecting, playing the various formats and mixing with the community! I am stocking Disney Lorcana and One

Piece which is relatively new to me, so there’s much to learn there too!

How do you come up with new ideas for your business?

Usually, they’ll come at the most random times! Honestly there are so many avenues to explore with Trading Card Games (TCGs) and ways to engage that I have more ideas than I can keep up with! I do always try to prioritise the ideas that make TCGs accessible and inclusive for everyone though.

Who

is your biggest inspiration?

It has to be my old manager Peter from when I started my last job at Domino’s. He began on minimum wage in-store and has had an awardwinning 30-year career building his own businesses. He taught me a lot, and I hope one day to be half as successful and kind as him.

What motivates you?

Sharing moments with customers is a big one. When they get a big “hit” from a pack or make their first

3D card, seeing their reactions and smiles is truly priceless and makes all the hard work worthwhile!

It’s also easy to get out of bed in the morning when you spend the day surrounded by something you love, talking with people who share that interest!

What is the best piece of advice you have been given?

“Whatever you do, do it with excellence, even if it’s taking out the bins. Excellence is what you do when no one is watching.” This advice has motivated me to always try and be the best version of myself.

What advice would you give to someone considering starting their own business?

Trust in yourself and give it everything you’ve got! You’re going to hit many bumps in the road and make plenty of mistakes but appreciate those little moments that shine through. There’s nothing more rewarding than stepping back and realising YOU did that!

What do you do to relax?

This might sound a bit sad, but I play Pokémon TCG and Pokémon GO! In my defence, I do explore a lot

with Pokémon GO, and being in nature is one of my favourite pastimes. Who said games were bad hey?! I’m also a big Reading FC fan and enjoy going to games with my Dad whenever I can, not that following them has been relaxing recently!

What is your future ambition?

My primary goal is to foster a community of like-minded individuals through education and involvement, creating a safe space where anyone can enjoy their favourite hobby and be themselves.

It can be challenging when you have a hobby like this, especially in your 30s, you get judged a lot! By developing new and engaging ways to immerse people in this world, I hope to open the world of Pokémon and TCG to everyone and one day, cater to all kinds of collectors, competitors and hobbyists.

It was lovely speaking with you today, Dan. We wish you all the very best for the future.

Why choose a custom gaming PC over a pre-built one?

If you’re looking for the ultimate gaming experience, nothing beats a custom-built gaming PC. With the right components, a gaming PC that’s built to order can provide amazing graphics, faster processing, and the smoothest gameplay than any off-the-shelf PC.

At Pratts Pods, we specialise in building custom gaming PCs that meet the exact needs and preferences of our clients. So, why choose a custom gaming PC over a pre-built one?

Customisation

When building a custom gaming PC, our clients can choose every component from the processor and graphics card to the cooling system. This allows them to tailor their PC to their specific gaming needs and budget. For example, if the client prefers games that require high processing power, we can recommend a top-of-the-line processor that will deliver the performance they need.

Flexibility

With a pre-built PC, upgrading components can be difficult or impossible. With a custom-built PC, upgrades are easy and can be done on a component-by-component basis. This means that our clients can upgrade their PC’s graphics card or storage capacity without having to replace the entire system, saving money later down the line!

When Fashion Meets Home & Garden Decor

In the ever-evolving world of fashion and interior design, two trends are currently taking centre stage. Offering a refreshing alternative to the traditional blacks and greys and moving to warm and earthy tones. Let’s delve into how you can incorporate these trends into your home and garden.

Latte Dressing

Latte dressing, as the name suggests, is all about shades of brown, beige, and cream. It’s a perfect blend of casual and classy, making it an excellent choice for both your wardrobe and your home decor. Introduce materials such as linen and jute and pieces with earthy tones. These can easily be achieved with table lamps, vases, or soft furnishings.

Grounded Neutral

Grounded neutral, on the other hand, has been a staple in interior design for years, and for good reason. These versatile shades, ranging from soft taupes to deeper browns, create a calming, tranquil feel in your home. The grounded neutral palette complements virtually every colour combination, making it incredibly easy to incorporate into your home decor. Use key statement pieces to bring that cosy, grounded feel to your space.

Bringing It All Together

Incorporating these trends into your home and garden decor doesn’t have to be daunting.

Here are some additional tips to help you seamlessly blend these trends into your own home:

Mix and Match Textures

Combining different textures such as linen, leather, velvet, and natural fibres can add depth and interest to your home. Don’t be afraid to experiment with various materials to create a rich, layered look.

Play with Patterns

While both trends emphasise neutral tones, introducing subtle patterns can add visual interest. Opt for patterns that complement the overall colour scheme without overpowering it.

Keep It Balanced

Too many neutral tones can make a space feel flat. Incorporate pops of accent colours through accessories like artwork, rugs, cushions, flowers, vases, and lighting.

Whether you’re redecorating your living room, updating your dining area, or adding comfort to your garden, these tips will help you achieve a cohesive and inviting look. It’s all about creating a space that reflects your personal style while providing a relaxing home away from the hustle and bustle of everyday life.

Don’t Kill It!

The Ultimate Houseplant Guide

Biophilic design, the incorporation of nature from the entire globe into our homes and workspaces, has steadily increased for multiple reasons but, without complicating the issue, the primary reason is a simple one, it makes us feel good.

In an increasingly techy world, the basic instinct within us is to stay connected to nature. In the summertime that is relatively simple, roll open those bi-folds and let the sunshine in and spend time outside. Sadly, our climate means those opportunities are all too infrequent.

The many wellbeing benefits of houseplants are available to everyone, they are hugely adaptable, some are table plant size, others perfect for trailing from a shelf and of course the medium and spectacular floor standing plants that can turn virtually any room or area from so-so, to so stunning.

The most common phrase I hear from people is “I always kill them!” The key to success is actually a simple rule which nature has taken millennia to perfect. All plants have evolved according to their environment, in other words you have to match the plant to the space.

A humidity loving plant that likes good indirect light will thrive in a bright bathroom, so choose it. With the best will in the world we cannot change nature, so work with it!

Selection and Care Tips

Every time a client, whether in our retail shop or for a large commercial project, asks what plants they can have, my first question is, “What is the light like in the space you have in mind?”. Once this is figured out then the options are opened up.

The good news is there are always multiple options for most indoor locations, the only exceptions being the obvious of very low or no natural light, or a south facing very large window. All living plants live through the sun’s energy so faux is the only option in total darkness. There are numerous plants that thrive in full sun such as the Ficus family, Crotons, Succulents and Cacti, again following the rules of considering the plant’s original home, such as semi-desert or tropical regions.

Andrea & Rick from Tropica

The even better news is that in the majority of homes or workspaces, the light is medium and indirect with perhaps full sun for a couple of hours a day, the majority of houseplants, or as we call them tropical plants, prefer this. This is because they flourish well below the dappled light created by the high tree

canopy in their native environment.

Unfortunately, the labels on many plants are symbols which are generic and somewhat unhelpful, especially considering they can represent a reasonable investment and you want them to actually thrive, not just survive. We take a different approach, as well as each plant having brief but precise bullet points regarding required light, humidity and watering, we will engage and ask the key questions on these points and present multiple options.

The other unfortunate aspect of buying from superstores or similar is their transport, storage and in house care between departing the nursery and sitting on the shelf. Has this been done correctly or has the plant been stored at some point below the temperature in which it can survive? Has the plant been drowned or underwatered? You will only know the answer a month later as the plant may not thrive despite your best endeavours.

Watering, or the lack of it, is also vital. Unlike UK garden plants that will often need daily watering in hot or dry spells, with a few exceptions, houseplants can go 1-2 weeks between watering, in fact this is vital for their long-term wellbeing.

Large plants in large pots will always need less frequent watering than a tiny plant as the volume of compost will easily hold enough water to ensure the plant has a good quantity of moisture to meet its requirements. So, if holidays are your thing, no problem! Just give it a little thought. Perhaps move it away from a bright window or give it a little more water than usual.

Remember all houseplants will need only a third of the water during the winter than they require in their peak growing months, which are April to August.

To assist photosynthesis, clean your plant’s leaves on a regular basis either with a microfibre glove or clean lint free cloth.

Misting for many plants is a much more effective way of keeping them hydrated, so if you feel the urge to water, but the compost is moist, just give the foliage a good mist, especially if that is the instruction on your Tropica label!

Once you understand the rules it really is as simple as 1-2-3-do-re-mi.

Strawberries!

Small Fruits with Big Health Impacts

Strawberries are a favourite summer fruit. They appear in everything from yoghurt to desserts and salads. They’re a lowglycaemic food, meaning they have little effect on blood sugar. This makes them a tasty option for people looking to control or lower their glucose levels. June and July are the best months to pick fresh strawberries, but they’re available in supermarkets year-round. They’re delicious raw or cooked in recipes ranging from sweet to savoury.

Are Strawberries Berries?

This member of the rose family isn’t really a fruit or a berry—strawberries are actually the enlarged receptacle of a flower. Grown in temperate climates across South America, North America, Asia, and Europe, they’re one of the most popular berry fruits in the world.

Are

Strawberries

Good for You?

There’s a lot to love about these sweet snacks!

They’re lower in calories and sugar than fruits like apples or bananas, yet they’re high in fibre and other key nutrients. The health benefits of strawberries are plentiful. They naturally deliver vitamins, fibre, and particularly high levels of antioxidants known as polyphenols - without any sodium, fat, or cholesterol.

They are among the top 20 high-antioxidant fruits and are a good source of manganese and potassium. Just one serving, about eight berries, provides more vitamin C than an orange. Strawberries also have minerals such as calcium, iron, potassium, folate, and magnesium, along with antioxidants called anthocyanins. Those are healthful plant compounds that give strawberries their red colour. The amount of anthocyanin goes up as the fruit ripens. That means the redder the fruit, the more antioxidants it has.

Health Benefits of Strawberries

The vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants in strawberries provide important health benefits. For example, strawberries are rich in vitamin C and polyphenols, antioxidant compounds that may help prevent some diseases. The antioxidant compounds found in strawberries protect cells and tissue in your body by neutralising unstable molecules called free radicals. Too many free radicals roaming around in your body can lead to oxidative stress, an imbalance that can harm cells and tissues. By curbing free radicals and oxidative stress, the plant chemicals in strawberries may lower high levels of inflammation that can hurt your immune system and contribute to several health conditions, including obesity.

Improved insulin sensitivity

The polyphenols in strawberries improve insulin sensitivity in nondiabetic adults. Not only are strawberries low in sugar themselves, but they may also help you metabolise other forms of glucose.

Skin protection

Strawberries have anti-inflammatory effects that may help prevent skin damage. In one small study, strawberry-based cosmetic treatments protected skin exposed to harmful ultraviolet A radiation, especially when used in combination with the coenzyme Q10.

Osteoarthritis management

One small study showed the anti-inflammatory benefits of strawberries can also help protect other parts of your body, including your joints.

Lowered risk of cardiovascular disease

Researchers have found that strawberries may promote heart health in a number of ways. Along with helping improve your body’s sensitivity to insulin, they may lower fats in your blood called triglycerides and lower total and LDL cholesterol. LDL is the “bad” kind of cholesterol. Regularly eating them may also protect your heart by helping your blood vessels work better and lowering your blood pressure.

Better gut health

Eating high fibre foods like fruits can help you have regular bowel movements. Strawberries also serve as a prebiotic. That means you feed “good” gut bacteria when you eat them. Researchers have found that a healthy gut microbiome can help your body better use antioxidants, like the anthocyanin found in strawberries.

Possible lowered risk of cancer

People who eat a lot of fruits and vegetables are generally less likely to get cancer compared with people who eat less nutrient-rich foods. What’s more, certain antioxidants found in strawberries may slow the growth of cancer cells. But scientists are still trying to pinpoint exactly how chemical compounds found in strawberries may aid in cancer prevention or treatment.

Brain health protection

Long-term research shows that people who eat antioxidant-rich fruits like blueberries and strawberries have slower rates of decline in thinking and memory as they age. They’re also less likely to get Alzheimer’s disease, the most common form of dementia. Scientists think the fruit’s antiinflammatory effects play a big role in how berries protect the brain.

Strawberries are found in the produce aisles of most supermarkets. You can also pick your own at farms around Cheshire during their peak season. You can use them in custards, fruit salads, baked goods, and green salads.

Recipe Ideas

Strawberry, Yoghurt & Almond Muffins

Ingredients

200g self-raising flour

50g ground almonds

125g golden caster sugar

1 tsp bicarbonate of soda

3 eggs

150g natural yoghurt

100g butter, melted

1 tsp vanilla extract

250g strawberries, chopped

20g flaked almonds

Method

Step 1

Heat the oven to 180C/160C fan/gas 4. Line the holes of a muffin tray with 12 muffin cases. Mix the flour, almonds, sugar, bicarb and a pinch of salt in a large bowl.

Step 2

Whisk the eggs, yoghurt, melted butter and vanilla in a jug. Pour the wet ingredients into the dry and mix to a smooth batter, leaving no pockets of flour. Gently fold through half of the chopped strawberries with a spatula.

Step 3

Divide the mixture between the muffin cases. The cases should be quite full. Put a few pieces of the remaining strawberries on top along with the flaked almonds.

Step 4

Bake in the centre of the oven for 25 mins until risen and golden. Insert a cocktail stick into the palest muffin to check it is cooked through – if there is any wet mixture clinging to it, return to the oven for another 5 mins.

Step 5

Leave to cool on a wire rack for 10 mins. Will keep in an airtight container for up to three days. Enjoy!
