Welcome

Welcome, Wilmslow, Handforth, Alderley Edge and now Knutsford, to our very special Christmas edition of Cheshire’s Golden Triangle local magazine. We have all things celebratory of the festive season from traditional ‘Panto’ to an Outdoor Winter Wonderland, festive food and drink and of course, Christmas Markets. Simon, our resident travel consultant, takes us to Lapland and I visit Athens, city of Greek Gods, before returning home to Knutsford and Tatton Park.

Dan Lancaster has been looking at sustainable landscape gardening, Phil Hart has bespoke kitchens at TKO, and Nantwich Clinic have a private GP. In Wilmslow, The Smith’s of Cheshire and Cheshire Mercantile all have recipes and artisanal food and drink for us to try, and extremely popular they both are!

In the world of finance, Francis Kemp has a ‘lifetime mortgage’ and James Riley at Apogee Wealth talks about the impact of the recent budget. If you need a helping hand with the party arrangements, Gemma (who I spend 5 Minutes with) is your ‘go to’ person, and if you are looking for that Town centre local venue to celebrate with an office party or family ‘get together’ Claire, at the Swan Inn, in the centre of Wilmslow is waiting to hear from you.

Exciting news on the Party front as we will be holding our very own official Launch of Cheshire’s Golden Triangle magazine in January at the Swan Inn, and more about that in the New Year issue.

So, until the New Year, and a very optimistic look at what 2025 will bring for us ‘locals’ residents and communities of Cheshire’s Golden Triangle - from myself and my team at Local Area magazines, we wish you a very happy, safe and very merry Christmas.

Jacqui Priestley spends five minutes with Gemma Bradley, Cheshire Party Planner

Planning a party can be overwhelming, but Gemma, the founder of Cheshire Party Planner LTD, makes it easy. With a keen eye for detail and creativity, Gemma specialises in crafting unforgettable events, from children’s parties and milestone birthdays to weddings and corporate gatherings.

We sat down for a quick chat to learn more about her journey, what makes her business unique, and how she brings magic to every celebration.

What inspired you to start Cheshire Party Planner?

I have always adored helping with family and friends’ events and seeing people enjoy special moments together. My own wedding was a big inspiration; I loved planning every detail, and when a friend told me it was the best wedding he’d ever been to, it really resonated with me. I’ve been working in events since I was 16, doing everything from entertainment

to catering. About ten years ago, I realised I could combine my experience, creativity, and passion for starting my own business. As a trained primary teacher, initially, I focused on children’s parties to help busy parents celebrate their child’s special day without stress. The business has grown from there, and I now plan all kinds of events. I love the variety of seeing what’s next for me!

What sets Cheshire Party Planner apart from other planners?

My approach is very personalised. I don’t believe in one-size-fits-all parties; I take time to understand each client’s unique vision and focus on details that make the event special. I’m also a people person and connect well with guests of all ages, especially children. Happy children mean happy parents, so I plan activities that keep kids engaged, allowing adults to relax.

My goal is to make things memorable and stressfree. Many clients don’t know where to start with planning, so I handle everything, including on-theday coordination, so they can feel like guests at their own events. I’m very hands-on at parties; I run a tight ship and constantly tidy up to keep everything perfect. I also capture special moments with photos and videos to share privately afterwards.

Do you need a large budget to afford Cheshire Party Planner’s services?

Not at all! I’m adaptable and offer packages to suit different budgets. Some clients hire me to handle just a few aspects, like arranging a balloon display, entertainment, or catering. I’m happy to help where it’s most needed. I also suggest ways to save on the budget, allowing clients to invest in elements that make the party truly memorable.

What are some popular themes for children’s parties?

I’ve done so many themes, but princess, dinosaur, and carnival parties are always popular. One of my carnival-themed parties was a standout event— it had ten entertainers, including an animatronic elephant! The kids (and adults) loved it, and it was a spectacular day. You can check out the video on Instagram (@cheshirepartyplanner).

“My goal is to make things memorable and stress free. Many clients don’t know where to start with planning, so I handle everything so they can feel like guests at their own events.”

Can you share a recent event that stands out as a favourite?

I recently planned a summer garden party for a 70th birthday. The family were so welcoming, and they booked me ten months prior, which gave me time to get to know them and secure the best-value suppliers. They left me an incredible review: “Gemma was absolutely amazing from start to finish. We weren’t sure what we wanted, but with her help, we had an incredible celebration. She became part of the family during the process.”

Feedback like that means the world to me.

What has been a major highlight for Cheshire Party Planner this year?

This year, I’ve planned more weddings and corporate events, which has been a fantastic expansion for the business. I love working with clients to bring their vision to life from start to finish. Another highlight has been managing floral arrangements and decor for several events. I’m in my element collecting vintage bottles and jars to showcase beautiful, wildflower displays.

Through her dedication, creativity, and personal touch, Gemma has made Cheshire Party Planner a trusted name for unforgettable, stress-free celebrations, taking care of events big and small.

A Lifetime Mortgage

We all want to maximise our retirement benefits, but rising life expectancy can lead to potential gaps between our life goals and the sustainability of our pensions. This is where a lifetime mortgage can help you, read on to learn more.

A lifetime mortgage is a type of mortgage secured against your property that does not need to be repaid until the borrower passes away or enters long-term care. This arrangement allows you to access some of the equity you have built up in your home over the years, allowing you to benefit from it now without needing to sell your house.

A lifetime mortgage can help you pay off debts or finance home improvements. It can also assist you in purchasing a new car, going on a holiday, or providing financial support to your family. This type of mortgage offers a solution for those who wish to retire but are unable to do so because they still have an outstanding mortgage that they haven’t cleared. Lifetime mortgages provide flexibility, allowing you to receive a lump sum or take smaller amounts as and when you require them.

Finding the right path forward is crucial, considering various factors. Frances Kemp from The Mortgage Mill provides personalised advice to ensure her clients secure the most suitable mortgage.

Frances is a qualified lifetime mortgage advisor living in Bramhall and has been involved in the community through Girl Guiding for over 13 years. If you are considering using your equity in your property, then please give her a call to discuss your options.

The

A Lifetime Mortgage will reduce the value of your estate and may affect your entitlement to means-tested benefits and tax status.

The impact of not servicing monthly interest payments on a Lifetime Mortgage is that the outstanding debt can grow rapidly, thus reducing the value of your estate.

For example, if the interest rate was 7% a year, a £50,000 loan would double to £100,000 after 10 years assuming no repayments are made.

This is an example for illustrative purposes only and personalised advice and recommendations should be sought from a qualified professional. You are strongly advised to register a lasting power of attorney. This will allow your affairs to be managed by somebody else if your mental abilities significantly decline.

Create Your Own Magical Winter Wonderland

Decorating your garden for Christmas can transform your outdoor space into a magical winter wonderland, creating a festive ambiance for the holiday season. Here’s a guide to help you make your garden ready for Christmas in style:

Twinkling Lights

Outdoor fairy lights are a must for a Christmas garden. Wrap them around trees, bushes, and garden structures like fences or trellises. You can use warm white lights for a classic, cosy look or multicoloured ones for a playful, festive vibe. Solarpowered lights are eco-friendly and eliminate the need for extension cords. Icicle lights hung from eaves or pergolas give an enchanting snowy effect.

Christmas Ornaments

Bring Christmas indoors outdoors by hanging large, weatherproof ornaments on trees or shrubs. Choose shatter-proof baubles in traditional colours like red, gold, and green. You could also make use of oversized ornaments to create a whimsical, larger-than-life feel in your garden. Add garlands and wreaths on gates, garden sheds, or around windows for an extra festive touch.

Garden Pathway Décor

Line your pathways with illuminated stakes, lanterns, or LED candles to guide guests through your garden. Candy cane-shaped lights are a festive option that adds colour and charm. Another idea is to create a faux snow effect by dusting paths with white pebbles or light cotton material.

Festive Plants and Displays

Incorporate holiday-themed plants like poinsettias, holly, or evergreen wreaths. Place planters filled with winter blooms and decorate them with ribbon or miniature baubles. If you have tall trees or shrubs, decorate them as outdoor Christmas trees with lights and ornaments.

Use a Focal Point

Designate a central area in your garden for a Christmas display, like a lit Christmas tree or an outdoor seating area with blankets and cushions in holiday colours. You can also create a nativity scene or set up a fire pit with Christmas stockings.

Christmas-Themed Figures

Add fun, life-size or medium-sized figures like Santa Claus, reindeer, snowmen, or nativity scenes to your garden. Place these characters in prominent spots to welcome visitors. You can even go for illuminated wireframe figures to bring them to life at night.

With these creative ideas, your garden will radiate Christmas spirit, making it a beautiful backdrop for all of your festive gatherings.

Sustainable Landscaping

Eco-Friendly Ideas for Your Garden

Creating a beautiful garden that is also environmentally friendly is a rewarding endeavour. Sustainable landscaping not only benefits the environment but also creates a healthier, more resilient outdoor space. By incorporating eco-friendly practices into your garden design, you can reduce your carbon footprint, conserve resources, and support local wildlife. Read on to get inspiration about eco-friendly ideas for sustainable landscaping that can transform your garden.

1 Water Conservation Techniques

Water conservation is a key component of sustainable landscaping. Implementing efficient irrigation systems and water-saving practices can significantly reduce water usage in your garden. Drip irrigation and soaker hoses deliver water directly to the roots of plants, minimising evaporation and runoff. Installing rainwater harvesting systems, such as rain barrels, allows you to collect and store rainwater for garden use.

2 Soil Health and Composting

Healthy soil is the foundation of a sustainable garden. Improving soil health enhances plant growth, reduces the need for chemical inputs, and supports a diverse soil ecosystem. One of the best ways to enrich your soil is by adding organic matter through composting. Composting converts kitchen scraps, garden waste, and other organic materials into nutrientrich compost that can be incorporated into the soil - which increases water retention, and provides essential nutrients to plants.

3 Choosing Native Plants

One of the most effective ways to create a sustainable garden is by choosing native plants. Native plants naturally occur in your region and are adapted to the local climate and soil conditions. They require less water, fertilisers, and pesticides compared to non-native species, making them easier to maintain.

4 Energy-Efficient Garden Lighting

Garden lighting enhances the beauty and functionality of your outdoor space, but it can also consume a significant amount of energy. Switching to energy-efficient lighting options helps reduce your carbon footprint and lowers energy costs. Solarpowered lights are an excellent choice for sustainable gardens, as they harness energy from the sun and require no electricity and LED lights are another energy-efficient option that uses less power and has a longer lifespan than traditional incandescent bulbs.

5 Sustainable Hardscaping

Recycled and locally sourced materials are sustainable choices for hardscaping. Reclaimed wood, recycled concrete, and natural stone can be used to create beautiful and durable garden features. Incorporating sustainable hardscaping not only benefits the environment but also adds unique character to your garden.

6 Minimising Chemical Use

Reducing or eliminating chemical pesticides and fertilisers is crucial for sustainable landscaping. Chemical inputs can harm beneficial insects, contaminate water sources, and degrade soil health. Instead, opt for organic and natural alternatives to manage pests and fertilise your garden.

7 Edible Landscaping

Edible landscaping integrates food-producing plants into your garden design, providing fresh, organic produce while enhancing the beauty of your outdoor space. Growing your own fruits, vegetables, and herbs reduces the need for store-bought produce, lowering your carbon footprint and ensuring a fresh supply of healthy food.

8 Creating Wildlife Habitats

Designing your garden to support local wildlife is a rewarding way to contribute to biodiversity and create a vibrant ecosystem. Include features that attract birds, bees, butterflies, and other beneficial creatures. Planting a variety of flowering plants ensures a continuous supply of nectar and pollen throughout the seasons.

9 Reducing Lawn Size

Reducing the size of your lawn or replacing it entirely with more sustainable alternatives can significantly lower your garden’s environmental impact. Consider replacing turf with ground cover, wildflower meadows, or xeriscaping (landscaping with drought-tolerant plants). Ground cover like clover, thyme, and creeping Jenny require less water and mowing than traditional grass.

Sustainable landscaping involves making mindful choices that benefit the environment, conserve resources, and create a healthy, resilient garden. Embrace these sustainable practices to enjoy a beautiful, thriving garden that contributes positively to the environment and provides a peaceful retreat for you and your family.

Tatton Park

What better way to enjoy the winter sunshine and breathe in fresh air than a visit to Tatton Park in Cheshire, which is a stunning historic estate, offering a blend of natural beauty, heritage, and outdoor adventure. Set across 1,000 acres of lush parkland, the estate features landscaped gardens, a medieval deer park, and a grand mansion that immerses visitors in the elegance of bygone eras.

The mansion, with its richly decorated rooms and extensive art collections, reflects centuries of history and the lifestyle of the Egerton family, who once lived there. Walking through, you can admire the elegant state rooms, the stunning library, and the well-preserved servants’ quarters, giving a sense of the life both above and below stairs.

Tatton Park’s gardens are a highlight, with their beautifully crafted areas including the Italian Garden, Rose Garden, and Japanese Garden, each one offering seasonal blooms and unique landscapes.

For families, there is also a working farm with rare breeds, making it a delightful experience for children. Trails through the deer park reveal herds of red and fallow deer roaming freely, adding to the park’s peaceful and tranquil atmosphere.

With cafés, picnic spots, and seasonal events, Tatton Park provides an idyllic

day out, blending nature, history, and family-friendly activities in one of Cheshire’s most stunningly picturesque locations.

Tatton Park, is famous for its large population of wild deer, which roam freely across its 1,000-acre deer park. The park is home to two species: the red deer, Britain’s largest land mammal, and the smaller fallow deer, easily recognisable by their spotted coats.

These deer have been a part of Tatton Park for over 400 years, contributing to the site’s historical and ecological significance. Visitors often see these magnificent animals grazing, especially during dawn and dusk when they are most active.

The deer are particularly captivating during the rutting season in autumn, when the males engage in dramatic displays of strength to win mates.

The stags’ bellows and clashes create an atmosphere that transports observers to an ancient natural world. During this time, visitors are advised to keep a respectful distance, as the deer can become aggressive.

Tatton’s management team takes special care to maintain the park as a natural habitat, ensuring the deer population remains healthy and balanced. They monitor the herds’ well-being and maintain a mix of open grassland and wooded areas to support the deer’s natural behaviours. The deer at Tatton Park are an integral part of the landscape, and their presence adds to the park’s appeal, making it a popular destination for photographers, wildlife enthusiasts, and families seeking a peaceful escape into nature.

Tatton Park boasts a diverse array of trees, contributing to its scenic beauty and rich biodiversity. The estate is home to ancient woodlands, gardens, and tree-lined avenues with a mix of native and ornamental species. In the deer park, native oaks (Quercus robur) stand majestically, some over 400 years old, providing a crucial habitat for wildlife. Beech, chestnut, and birch trees are also common, offering seasonal colour changes that attract visitors year-round.

The Tatton Gardens feature more exotic species, including Japanese maples and magnolias, adding vibrant reds and pinks to the landscape. The arboretum, one of the estate’s highlights, contains over 800 species, such as giant redwoods (Sequoiadendron giganteum) and ancient yews. Many of these trees were planted in the 18th and 19th centuries as part of landscape design projects.

This variety of trees at Tatton Park supports a wealth of biodiversity, offering shelter to birds, insects, and small mammals, and creating a natural sanctuary for visitors to enjoy.

No walk in the countryside would be complete without stopping at a local public house before returning home and the Greyhound Pub in Ashley, boasts a rich history, tracing back to the early 18th century. Situated in the heart of Cheshire’s countryside, just a couple of miles from Tatton Park, the pub originally served as a resting point for travellers, farmworkers, and local villagers. Its traditional architecture, including its characteristic timber frames and thatched roof, speaks to its longstanding presence in the area and the historical charm that has been preserved over the centuries.

Throughout the years, the Greyhound has adapted to the changing times, while retaining its classic, cosy interior and welcoming atmosphere. During the 19th and early 20th centuries, it was a favoured spot for local huntsmen, adding to its association with rural life. The pub’s name, “The Greyhound,” reflects this heritage, as greyhound racing and hunting were popular pastimes in the region.

In the mid-20th century, the Greyhound underwent a significant renovation to modernise its facilities while preserving its historic character. Today, it serves as a cherished local establishment known for its hearty British cuisine, traditional ales, and community events. The Greyhound remains a beloved gathering place for both locals and visitors, celebrating Cheshire’s rural past while embracing a warm, community centered atmosphere that endures to this day. The next time you feel a need to ‘blow the cobwebs away’ put on your boots and coat and head on over to Tatton Park!

Get Christmas Party Ready

As the days continue to get darker earlier and Christmas party season well and truly gets into full swing, we wouldn’t blame you if you were feeling less than motivated about maintaining your everyday fitness routine. In fact, many of us would probably prefer to don our bright and colourful party dress code complete with red lipstick and a show stopping shimmery outfit. Or, perhaps a jovial jumper/shirt and trouser combination, depending on your preference.

During this time of year, it can also be especially tempting to tuck into a whole host of delicious delights. Whilst balance is key, it’s still important to eat healthy nutritious food and train as regularly as your seasonal social calendar permits. To help you, we’ve put together a few tips aimed at encouraging you with your workouts and food regime and ensure that you’re feeling fabulous and Christmas party ready.

Balance Things Out

During this time of year, supermarkets will be fully stocked with a whole host of tempting Christmas treats including mince pies, chocolate yule logs, alcohol in various tempting forms and shortbread. It’s vital you remember not to overdo it.

On the other hand, we believe everyone deserves to indulge from time to time –especially during the festive season as a whole. So, if you’re tucking into a tantalising Yorkshire pudding wrap with all the trimmings, opt for a warming seasonal soup with some wholemeal bread and a side of fruit for your second meal.

We believe everyone deserves to indulge

from time to time, especially during the festive season

Switch Things Up

Although many of us enjoy being active outdoors during the summer. The thought of doing the same during the party season and wintry months doesn’t quite have the same appeal to most. You might want to try something a little different from your typical gym routine, like a group fitness class.

Exercising in a group offers a whole host of benefits including, working out in a fun and social setting and picking up new pointers on how to train more efficiently and effectively. It could also inspire you to train that little bit harder, as you’ll be competing against one another and collectively push each other to keep going.

We offer a number of classes for members of varying fitness interests and abilities, including, Zumba, HIIT and Boxercise.

Fresh Food

We believe cooking and eating fresh food is always best. There will be plenty of winter vegetables available such as Brussels sprouts, leeks, savoy cabbage and Jerusalem artichokes, for you to sample and make something creative with. Try roasting some baby carrots, pumpkins, parsnips and artichokes, combined with your choice of seasoning, paired with a little olive or rapeseed oil. This will not only be delicious, but also healthy and packed with flavour and essential nutrients.

Time Changer

Leaving your warm and cosy bed is always slightly more difficult during the colder months. But it may be worthwhile to swap your after work gym sessions to the mornings instead. There’s a chance it might be a slight struggle to begin with, but you’ll find yourself with more energy throughout the day. You’ll also have more free time in the evenings, are likely to sleep better and earlier and you’ll feel much more prepared for your Christmas party.

Get Some Air

Our mission is to get as many people as possible engaging in 30 minutes of activity, five days a week. While we understand you may want to stick to working out indoors during the festive season and colder months. It’s still vital to try and get some fresh air wherever possible. To increase your heart rate and get your blood pumping, consider going out for a brisk walk during your lunch break or a light jog once you return from work and you’ll be able to enjoy the Christmas party even more so than usual.

Christmas Chocolate Traybake

Ingredients

For the chocolate sponge

150g/5½oz unsalted butter, melted, plus extra to grease

200ml/7fl oz buttermilk

3 free-range eggs

250g/9oz self-raising flour

75g/2½oz cocoa powder

1 tsp baking powder

200g/7oz light brown soft sugar

For the creamy chocolate icing

150g/5½oz unsalted butter, softened

300g/10½oz icing sugar

100g/3½oz dark chocolate, roughly chopped

1 tbsp milk

To decorate

mini gingerbread men

edible gold star sprinkles

edible red and green sprinkles

gold edible lustre (optional)

Method

Step 1

Preheat the oven to 180C/160C Fan and line a 30cmx25cm / 12inx10in cake tin with butter and baking paper.

Whisk the buttermilk, butter and eggs together in a bowl.

In a separate large bowl, combine the flour, cocoa powder, baking powder and sugar. Gradually mix the wet ingredients into the dry until you have a smooth cake batter.

Pour evenly into the lined tin and bake for 35 minutes, or until the sponge is well risen, and a skewer comes out clean.

Set aside to cool for 10 minutes, then take the sponge out of the tin onto a wire rack and leave to cool completely.

Step 2

Once cool, make the creamy chocolate icing.

Put the butter and icing sugar into a large bowl or the bowl of a stand mixer and beat with an electric whisk for 4–5 minutes, or until pale and fluffy.

Melt the dark chocolate in a bowl. You can either do this in the microwave – put the chocolate in a heatproof bowl, microwave for 20 seconds, check it, stir and keep cooking and checking every couple of seconds until it has melted.

Beat the melted dark chocolate into the butter and icing sugar. Beat in the milk to loosen the mixture slightly. Swirl the chocolate icing over the top of the traybake and top with the mini gingerbread men, sprinkles and, if liked, gold lustre.

Smiths of Cheshire

“Now this is a story all about how, a café in Cheshire turned the town around, and I’d like to take a minute, just sit right there, I’ll tell you how Smiths of Cheshire became the place with flair!”

Known across Hollywood, Paris, and Salford as the home of the best Chilli Jam and Jollof paste, Smiths of Cheshire Café has become a local favourite, blending authentic flavours from around the world with the warm hospitality of its owners, former Mr & Mrs game show contestants, D and Andy.

Their diverse menu reflects D’s African/Arabic heritage and their lives in countries blessed with abundant sunshine and spices. The one rule of the Smiths of Cheshire household while travelling is simple: ONLY EAT LOCAL, which makes this “little gem-of-a-place” your best bet for authenticity, whatever they serve you.

Whether you’re a local, a traveller, don’t fancy cooking, have a visiting friend with a palate beyond your spice cupboard, want a hot or cold meal, a chat, a smile, or even a cold beer or three (after 11am), they’ve got you covered.

This place has earned a reputation not only for the best breakfast sandwiches around but also for its consistent quality and warm hospitality.

The café is a celebration of the couple’s life together and their journey with food. Their appreciation for African, British, Thai, Indian, and Lebanese cuisine is evident in each dish they serve.

Drawing on locally sourced fresh herbs, chilli, and internationally sourced spices, their inspired dishes bring a burst of flavour and thoughts of home, usually with a bit of a kick.

A highlight of the menu is their African-inspired dishes. From their Jollof Rice, a perfectly balanced tomato-based spice and rice dish, stews with tender meat and hearty flavours, to Foul Moudamas; each dish has a homemade feel that transports you to the owners’ kitchen, where D carefully crafts each recipe with love and attention (and a prayer). These dishes are not just food but an experience, bringing the rich flavours of Africa and their journey to Cheshire with as much authenticity as availability allows.

Another favourite is their Manoushe (Lebanese flatbread), which has become quite the popular choice for dragons that visit their den. Flavour combinations like Cheese and Za’atar, Ak’kawi cheese (the stretch of mozzarella with the passion of the Middle East), Halloumi and Olive, and Lahm B’Ajeen are crowd-pleasers. But Smiths of Cheshire Café’s brewed awakening and P&J are its sauces and signature sandwiches, so good they literally put their name on them.

Nigerian Jollof Rice

This 20 minute recipe is healthy, nutritious, and most importantly, absolutely delicious!

Ingredients

- 4 plum tomatoes

- 4/6 Romano or Bell peppers

- 3 red onions (for blending)

- 1 red onion (for frying)

- 2 Scotch Bonnets

- 1/4 cup vegetable oil

- 2 tbsp tomato purée

- 1 cup long grain rice (washed)

- 1 tsp paprika

Curry

- 2 tsp thyme

- 1/4 tsp nutmeg

- 1 bay leaf

- 1 tsp salt

- 1 cup meat or vegetable stock

Method

Step 1

Chop the tomatoes, 3 onions, and peppers into chunks and place in a blender/food processor together with your scotch bonnet. Blitz to a smooth paste. Place a pot over medium heat and add blended tomato mixture.

Step 2

Cook tomato mixture over medium heat until it forms a somewhat loose paste (about 20 mins uncovered). The dryer you get it, the better. Adjust flame intensity if necessary. Try not to stir mixture often when cooking or it might burn. Set aside

Step 3

In another pan or pot, heat your preferred oil to medium to low heat. Add chopped onions to heated oil. Fry for 1-2 minutes.

Add the 2 tablespoons of tomatoes purée to the frying onions and fry for 5–7 minutes stirring occasionally. Stir continuously to avoid burning. Do this until the tomato purée separates.

As you fry, build your flavours by adding your aromatics like thyme, curry, nutmeg, paprika and fry all together. Some people add garlic but I do not; I use my mother’s recipe and she does not believe in over-doing it when it comes to Jollof!

After 7 minutes, of frying your purée and aromatics, add your blended and dried tomato paste to the pot. Stir well, reduce flame, cover and let simmer for about 20 mins.

Step 4

After 20 miutes, taste. Here you can correct and fix taste to your liking. You can add your bay leaf, salt/ seasoning. Once it’s to your taste, add your washed rice and stir well.

Step 5

Pour in your preferred stock to cover your rice. Place aluminium foil to cover the top of the pot to keep the steam in. Cover with lid and cook till rice softens. You can check it after 15 mins, stir and cover again if not fully cooked.

After all this if it doesn’t work out, then just pop into Smiths of Cheshire and order, take away a pot of the ready cheats sauce to make in minutes.

Athens

Ancient Wonders and Modern Vibrancy

Walking through the city centre, you experience this seamless fusion as ancient ruins stand proudly against a backdrop of bustling streets, contemporary cafés, and art-lined alleys. This unique juxtaposition makes Athens a city like no other, where time seems to fold, allowing visitors to touch the past while feeling the heartbeat of the present.

Syntagma Square and the Parliament Building

I journeyed through Athens starting in Syntagma Square, the city’s central square, where modern Athenian life thrives. Across from the square stands the Greek Parliament, a building originally constructed as a royal palace in the 19th century. Here, you can witness the ceremonial changing of the Evzones guard, dressed in traditional attire. This display of national pride connects the people of Athens to a shared cultural heritage, blending history with modern identity. Surrounded by coffee shops and fashionable stores, Syntagma is a fitting introduction to Athens’ city centre.

Monastiraki and the Ancient Agora

Just a short walk away lies Monastiraki, one of Athens’ most famous neighbourhoods, alive with flea markets, street vendors, and eclectic shops. It’s a vibrant part of the city centre, where lively bazaars offer everything from vintage trinkets to local produce. Amidst this bustling hub, the ruins of the Ancient Agora—the heart of classical Athenian life—stand in peaceful contrast. Once a gathering place for philosophers and statesmen like Socrates and Pericles, the Agora’s columns and ancient temples invite you to reflect on the roots of Western civilisation. As you walk through this open-air museum, the hum of Monastiraki’s markets continues in the background, emphasising how Athens interlaces the old with the new.

The Acropolis and the Acropolis Museum

No visit to Athens would be complete without seeing the Acropolis, the iconic hilltop fortress that has watched over the city for millennia. The Parthenon, built in honour of the goddess Athena, remains the crown jewel, a symbol of ancient Greek achievement in architecture and philosophy. As you make your way up the Acropolis, the modern cityscape sprawls out beneath you, reinforcing the grandeur and longevity of this ancient citadel.

Descending from the Acropolis, you can visit the Acropolis Museum, a sleek, modern structure designed to house and protect the artefacts found on the site. Its glass floors reveal ongoing archaeological excavations below, an innovative design that allows visitors to see the layers of history beneath their feet.

Plaka: The Old Meets the New

The neighbourhood of Plaka weaves an enchanting spell with its narrow, winding streets and pastelcoloured houses. Known as the “Neighbourhood of the Gods,” Plaka is one of the oldest areas in Athens, filled with neoclassical buildings and Byzantine churches. Modern cafés and boutique stores coexist alongside traditional tavernas and ancient ruins, creating a layered, almost cinematic ambiance.

At the cafés here, the young and old gather to enjoy a coffee or a traditional meal. As you sit in one of these cafés, you may notice that the view often includes remnants of ancient structures, from Roman baths to Ottoman-era fountains. It’s easy to feel that time is fluid in Plaka, where ancient statues and modern graffiti share the same streets.

Psiri and Contemporary Athens

For a taste of Athens’ modern, artistic side, Psiri offers a refreshing change of pace. Once an industrial area, Psiri is now a vibrant district known for its street art, hip bars, and creative spirit. Murals line the walls, telling stories of social and political change, adding a unique modern layer to the city’s visual landscape. Here, you can experience the pulse of contemporary Athens, from jazz clubs to rooftop bars, all within view of the Acropolis. Psiri demonstrates how Athens continually reinvents itself, adding layers of meaning and expression to its historical narrative.

The National Archaeological Museum

To round off your exploration, the National Archaeological Museum offers an extensive collection of artefacts from every period of Greek history. From sculptures of gods and goddesses to ancient weapons, the museum houses treasures that tell the story of ancient Greek civilization. Yet, even in its historical focus, the museum feels very much a part of modern Athens, as its exhibitions are constantly updated to incorporate the latest archaeological discoveries and research.

Athens city centre is a unique crossroads of history and modern life. Here, ancient monuments aren’t relics of the past; they’re woven into the everyday experience, connecting the people of Athens with their roots. At the same time, the city embraces innovation, transforming traditional areas into creative hubs. In Athens, every corner tells a story that stretches from antiquity to the present, creating a city that honours its heritage while inviting the world to explore and shape its future.

Labour’s 2024 Autumn Budget

Almost four months after Labour won the general election, chancellor Rachel Reeves has delivered her 2024 Autumn Budget, outlining the government’s plans for this tax year and beyond. Read on for a summary of some of the key measures and announcements from this year’s Autumn Budget – the first ever delivered by a female chancellor – and what they might mean for you.

For Investors - Capital Gains Tax Reforms

Firstly, as of 30 October, the main rates of CGT have increased. The basic rate has risen from 10% to 18% and the higher rate has increased from 20% to 24%. The government will maintain the lifetime limit for Business Asset Disposal Relief at £1 million. Meanwhile, the lifetime limit for Investors’ Relief (IR) will be reduced from £10 million to £1 million.

The BADR and IR rate of CGT will continue to be charged at 10%, before rising to 14% on 6 April 2025 and 18% on 6 April 2026.

ISA subscription limits frozen until 2030. Annual subscription limits will remain at £20,000 for ISAs, £4,000 for Lifetime ISAs and £9,000 for Junior ISAs and Child Trust Funds until 5 April 2030.

The starting rate for savings will be retained at £5,000 for 2025/26, allowing individuals with less than £17,570 in employment or pension income to receive up to £5,000 of savings income tax-free.

For Families - Inheritance Tax Changes

As expected, the chancellor made some key announcements that could affect estate planning.

Nil-rate Bands

The freeze on IHT thresholds will be extended, to 2030. The nil-rate band and residence nil-rate band will remain at £325,000 and £175,000 respectively.

Pensions

Closing the “loophole” that gives pensions preferable IHT treatment. Unused pension funds and death benefits payable from a pension into a person’s estate for IHT purposes from 6 April 2027. The government estimates this measure will affect around 8% of estates each year.

Business Property Relief

From 6 April 2026, Business Property Relief will reduce from 100% to 50% in all circumstances for shares designated as “not listed” on the markets of a recognised stock exchange, such as the AIM.

For Businesses - Business Rates Changes

The current business rates relief system is set to run until April 2025. It effectively serves as a reduction on business rate bills for eligible businesses, with retail and hospitality firms having been key beneficiaries.

Additionally, for 2025/26, some retail, hospitality, and leisure properties will receive 40% relief on their bills, up to a cash cap of £110,000 per business.

Corporation Tax capped at 25%. A cap Corporation Tax will be in place for the duration of the parliament.

The Rich Heritage of Knutsford Town Centre

Knutsford, a charming town in Cheshire, and my home for many years, boasts a rich history that reflects its evolution from a medieval settlement to a bustling town centre. Its name is thought to derive from “Canute’s Ford,” referencing a spot where the Danish King Canute is believed to have crossed the River Lily in the 11th century. The town has developed around its medieval layout, retaining its old-world charm while adapting to modernity.

Knutsford’s earliest growth was shaped by its strategic location, serving as a stopover between Manchester and Chester. It received its market charter in 1292 from Edward I, a critical step that enabled the town to become a thriving market hub.

The weekly market and regular fairs attracted traders, farmers, and artisans, laying the foundation for Knutsford’s prominence in the area.

In the 18th century, Knutsford expanded significantly, and many of its notable buildings were constructed. During this time, the town became a fashionable destination, with an array of Georgian-style architecture that still graces King Street and Princess Street. Tatton Park, one of the

town’s key landmarks, furthered Knutsford’s appeal. The grand estate, covering over 1,000 acres, was the seat of the Egerton family and later gifted to the National Trust, becoming one of Cheshire’s most popular attractions.

The 19th century saw Knutsford continue to flourish, with the arrival of the railway in 1862 further boosting its connectivity. The Victorian period also brought literary fame to Knutsford. Elizabeth Gaskell, a renowned novelist who spent much of her childhood in the town, immortalised Knutsford in her novels. Her novel Cranford, published in 1853, is famously based on Knutsford, capturing the essence of life in a small English town with a mix of wit and realism. The town has honoured Gaskell with several commemorations, including a statue and the Gaskell Tower.

Knutsford’s town centre also showcases historical institutions, such as the Knutsford Heritage Centre, located in a former Victorian school building. The town’s two churches, St. John’s and St. Cross, reflect the town’s diverse religious heritage, with St. John’s being a notable example of Gothic Revival architecture.

Today, Knutsford retains much of its historic appeal, blending old and new. Independent shops, cafés, and galleries line the cobbled streets of the town centre, while annual events like the Knutsford May Day Parade keep traditions alive. In recent years, the town has also embraced its artistic legacy with public art installations, such as the “Knutsford Heritage Mosaic,” which depict scenes from its history, adding vibrancy to the town centre.

Knutsford’s town centre is a testament to its rich heritage, marked by centuries-old architecture, historical markets, and cultural landmarks that continue to attract both residents and visitors, preserving its unique character amid modern advancements, and I couldn’t think of anywhere I would rather live!
