appeal

hristmas seems a long time ago now, but I can’t let the opportunity pass to pay tribute to the magnificent achievements of Wigan Rotary, who raised almost £15,000 in December operating their Santa Float throughout the local area, including estates in Standish, Shevington, Appley Bridge and Whitley. Local Life got first-hand experience of their efforts on one dark December night, when we helped them run the Santa Float in Shevington Moor. People were so generous and welcoming, and the children were all excited to meet Father Christmas. It is hard work though and, with the Rotarians running the Floats for almost every night in December, the organisation struggled to recruit volunteers for every route. Wigan Rotary has its fair share of people who, quite literally, have been round the block a few times and they could do with half a dozen or so companies who could help ‘do’ a night on the Santa Floats this December. If you’re interested then please do e-mail the local Rotary President, Keith Trencher, on keithtrencher@ gmail.com. We pulled together eight people to help out, spent 2½ hours collecting, had a fabulous time and ended up in the pub for the night. A great night out was had by all involved and we’re already looking forward to doing it all again this year. See you next time

My predictions for

W

2016

hat does 2016 have in store for Wigan’s 29,633 homeowners and landlords?

Those of you who read the Wigan Property Blog will know I am not the sort of person who pulls punches. So I’m going to say that prices will rise between 3% and 4% this year, and here’s why. The price of an average Wigan property is 4.2% higher today than it was a year ago. That may not sound a lot, but when you consider inflation is currently running at -0.1%, and average salary growth is only around 2.5% a year, this is bad news for first time buyers. But the real issue in the Wigan property market is the shortage of property to buy, as people either worry there will be no suitable house to move to, or cannot afford to upgrade. However, on the supply side, Chancellor George Osborne said in his Autumn Statement that he will change the planning laws to ensure the Government meets the pledge made at the General Election of 200,000 new homes a year. All I can say is: ‘Good luck hitting those numbers George!’

state this has dropped to 118 days; a drop of 37%. However, when you delve even deeper, the best performing type of property today in Wigan is the three-bed, which takes 114 days to find a buyer on average compared to the one-bed, which takes 164 days. It just goes to show, even though the average has dropped since 2011, other factors have changed. For more thoughts, opinions and views on the Wigan property market, visit www.wiganpropertyblog.com

Why? Because houses take years to build, so where does that leave us in Wigan in 2016? So while Mr Osborne sports yet another high viz jacket and hard hat for the TV cameras, let us look at the shortage of properties for sale. In February 2011, 1,695 properties were for sale in Wigan. Today that figure is 985. So on the face of it, there is less choice for Wigan buyers. But it also means with a restricted supply of properties for sale , and therefore keeps property prices high for Wigan house sellers.

Louise Breakey

Everything isn’t all doom and gloom though. Again, back in February 2011, the average property in Wigan took 186 days to find a buyer. Latest figures

ast your mind back to 10pm on Thursday, May 7. That was the moment Exit Polls revealed the Conservatives would be returned to Government with an outright majority. The middle classes in Standish and Orrell value growth. Looking at all the properties sold, as undoubtedly exhaled a huge sigh of relief as recorded by the Land Registry, within three miles of Wigan landlords, faced with rent controls from the centre of Wigan in September 2015 compared Labour, now had something to cheer about. This is to pre-Credit Crunch, in September 2007, we see because the Tories were always considered to be a the following: party which accepted the importance of the rental market. Since May though, Chancellor George Osborne has announced future rises Sept 2007 Sept 2015 Difference in Stamp Duty for Buy To Let Detached in Wigan 33 36 +9% landlords, as well as a change in the interest relief on Buy Semi-detached in Wigan 76 3 -30% To Let mortgages. The loss Terraced houses in Wigan 92 61 -34% of mortgage higher rate tax relief will make a number Apartments/flats in Wigan 51 3 -94% of properties not stack up financially. The new rules are likely to slow demand in the Wigan housing market, What amazed me were the drop in the number of which is in fact good news for the other landlords, semis, terraces and in particular apartments selling as there is less competition from ‘amateur’ landlords in Wigan compared to the sales of detached, which offering too much. hardly changed. Fewer properties are selling than November’s figures have just been released and they show a slight drop of property values in Wigan of 0.3% over that month. That figure doesn’t surprise me due to the time of year. It’s quite dangerous to look at one month in isolation, so looking at a more medium term view, over the last 12 months, property values in Wigan have risen by 4.6%. However, regular readers of the Wigan Property Blog know my passion for looking deeper into the stats. The really interesting information is the

last decade in Wigan and the types of properties selling have changed... interesting times ahead for the Wigan property market! All I’d say to Wigan’s landlords is do your homework, make sure the numbers do stack up, take advice and opinion from professionals and above all, for those of you planning to add to your portfolio, buy the right property at the right price. One place for such advice and opinion is the Wigan Property Blog at www.wiganpropertyblog.com

Field neglect

claim

Leisure bosses have pledged to look at sprucing up an area of open land in Standish. They promised to take action after being accused of neglecting the fields at the rear of Pilgrims Way by local pensioner John Finch, who regularly walks his dog, Tinkerbell, at the spot. The 84-year-old, who worked with disabled children in Salford, has lived in Pilgrims Way since it was built over 20 years ago. He says that, at the time, the public open space to the rear of the estate was kitted out with new paths and play equipment for children. Since then, Mr Finch claims that the area has been neglected. He told Local Life: “The problem is that the paths are

so old now and worn out. Horse riders also used it so it all gets churned up. It would be much better if they re-did the paths, one for pedestrians and one for the horses. It used to be a place you could go to relax but on many days it’s just full of mud. “Since they built the estate, they haven’t done anything towards its upkeep or anything. It has just deteriorated.” “I contacted Wigan Leisure & Culture Trust, but they said it was nothing to do with them. I then contacted the leisure department and they said it was also nothing to do with them, so I finally spoke to the planning department.” When Local Life put Mr Finch’s concerns to Wigan Council, Penny McGinty, assistant director for leisure and property, said: “We have recently spoken

Standish parking Over 400 people have backed calls for a new public car park to be built in Standish. Campaigners say lack of spaces in the area is bad for shoppers, residents and local businesses. They point to the fact that the vast majority of spaces which are available are customer-only, meaning there is little in the way of general parking. Standish Voice has now launched a petition calling on council bosses to act. A spokesman said: “We need Wigan Council to

call provide or facilitate a new car park for the general public that will adequately serve the existing and future needs of Standish centre, especially as the village’s population is set to increase by one third in the next decade. “Standish Voice’s Neighbourhood Plan survey found that 74% of respondents strongly agreed (49%) or agreed (25%) that a new car park was needed in the village centre.” To sign the petition, visit https://www.change. org/p/wigan-council-we-need-more-public-carparking-in-standish

Isherwood on

show

Works by the late, great Wigan artist James Lawrence Isherwood are going up for sale and to view locally. Hepplestone Fine Art, at Heskin Farmers’ Market & Craft Centre, Wood Lane, Heskin, will be hosting a collection of Isherwood’s works from Saturday, February 6, to Sunday, February 14. Born in Wigan in 1917, Isherwood devoted his life to painting. Despite not dying a rich man from his art, since his death in 1989, Isherwood, who lived on Wigan Lane, has risen through the ranks to join other Northern artists as one of the greats. Despite having his work mocked in some circles during his life, partly due to the controversial subject matter and unorthodox style, LS Lowry was

a fan and in fact had an Isherwood named ‘Woman with Black Cat’, hung in his home until the day he died. Lowry famously quoted “I only buy paintings that I like and I bought an Isherwood years ago”. For info, visit www.hepplestonefineart.com

Fuelling

rumours

Recycling bosses have refused to be drawn on their future plans for an Appley Bridge site. P-Fuel Ltd dramatically withdrew their application at West Quarry Railway Pad, Appley Lane North, just 48 hours before it was due to be discussed by councillors. Planning officers at Lancashire County Council had already dealt a blow to the company’s plans for a plastics to diesel operation by recommending that they be refused permission. It follows a high-profile campaign by local residents, who placed placards around the village, as well as objections from Wrightington, Shevington and Dalton parish councils. However, the reasons for a recommended refusal were based around lack

of information from the applicant on air quality impact, the lack of a noise assessment and that the application site is safeguarded for a small-scale rail facility. This has led to fears that P-Fuel could resubmit their application, covering the points raised, and be eventually granted permission. Local Life approached P-Fuel and its representatives for a comment, but none was received prior to publication.

Rotary’s £15k

boost

Generous Wiganers helped raise almost £15,000 for good causes. This year’s Wigan Rotary Club collection in the company of Father Christmas throughout December has been hailed a huge success by president Keith Trencher. He said: “In the current economic climate the club consider this a tremendous achievement by Wiganers. I would like to thank everyone for their terrific generosity, which will enable Wigan Rotary Club to support local, national and international charities to which we are committed. This support is a tremendous boost and encouragement to us. “All the helpers are volunteers who willingly give up their time and the only expenses are for the repairs

to the float, the cost of petrol for the generator, and insurance, the members of the club meet all the other costs.” Keith went on to thank the following: Local Life, Ainscough Group, Borron Shaw, K & M Acoustics,, the Hampson Partnership, Westwood Van Hire, Wigan Council staff, Wigan 78 Club, Orrell Mums and Toddlers’ Group, Orrell Community Network, Asda, Sainsbury’s, Tesco, staff at Santander and The Galleries. Wigan Rotary Club meets weekly on a Thursday at 12.30 p.m. at the Owls in Standish. It welcomes new members both men and women. Once a scattered collection of barns and outbuildings, Heskin Farmers’ Market and Craft Centre is now a retail retreat boasting over 60 shops and stalls. The centre opened in 2010 and Jewels May proprietor Kerry Welsh was among the first businesses to trade from this unique visitor attraction. Kerry said: “Since taking redundancy, I’ve built the business from a small retail cabinet before moving to a retail unit, where business really started to grow. Still leaving them

Tickled star, whose eagerness to be part of Ron’s school team saw him become its mascot for a year.

The linguistical wit of a Wigan teacher who spotted Shaun Edwards’ rugby talents at a young age have been published by his family. Ron Tickle taught at St Mary’s on Standishgate for around 20 years until retirement in 1990. It was while at St Mary’s that he got to know the future

FREE PICKUP & DELIVERY

Well-known and much loved in the area, Ron would also entertain local groups with talks, which he frequently rounded off with humourous Lancashire monologues. He had planned to commit them to print, but died in 2008, aged 81. In a mark of how much respect the Wigan rugby star had for Ron, he came up from London before Ron’s funeral and said he would be honoured to be one of the pallbearers. Ron’s widow Joan, of Mesnes Road, along with the

help of children Alison and Vince, and grandchildren Hannah and Joseph, have now published his works, with proceeds going to charity: “Ron was always asked whether he’d do a book on his monologues, and he always said he would but the proceeds would go to charity. “A few years after he died I was sorting his stuff out and come across sheets and sheets of A4 paper with the monologues on. Alison typed them out and Vince, who is now in Switzerland, got Hannah and Joseph to do some illustrations. “We didn’t have a title at first, and it was only while I was looking through some more papers did I find that Ron had not only written the foreword to the book, but also gave it the name Tickle Tattle.” The book is available from Wigan & Leigh Hospice, the Museum of Wigan Life, Haigh Hall Shop in The Stables and Derian House Children’s Hospice in Chorley. The suggested donation is £5 per book.

Sports field gets the Shevington is set to get brand new sporting facilities after a long-running campaign ended in victory. Land north of Vicarage Lane will now be turned into a sports field, complete with allotments and parking. Shevington Parish Council had undertaken consultation with local residents prior to formally asking Wigan Council for planning permission. However, this still led to 25 objection letters being sent to the authority, relating to the impact on surrounding residential properties, traffic, parking, highway safety, light intrusion, and the potential for anti-social behaviour. One letter of support

OK

was received on the grounds that the scheme will improve community facilities; there will be a good level of parking provision; and the scheme will promote healthy living, leisure facilities and active life within the borough. In conclusion, Wigan’s planning committee councillors agreed that it represents a sustainable form of outdoor sport and recreation development in the Green Belt. The report added: “While the development will introduce increased activity onto the site, this must be weighed alongside the significant benefits provided by improved sports and recreation facilities.”

Wigan is second only to Manchester city centre and its outskirts in the number of apprenticeship starts in the past five years. Figures show that since 2011, over 3,000 people have been given a chance to learn a trade or vocation. This outstrips places like Bury (1,400), Trafford (1,440) and Rochdale (1,950). Across the Greater Manchester area, over 100,000 apprenticeships have been given the go ahead in the past five years. An annual review of apprenticeship by Wigan Council states: “Since 2012, the council has

employed and/or supported a total of 193 apprentices (as at the end of December 2015) within its organisation in addition to supporting 188 external businesses to employ apprentices. “Performance projections show that we will continue to perform well to help Greater Manchester. Locally, we ensure local business needs are supported. Wigan Council’s delivery target alone is 6,000 apprenticeships over a 5 year period “The Internal Apprenticeship Scheme has a public value of £2.18 for every £1 spent, while the Confident Futures scheme has a public value of £2.75 for every pound.”

Court in the

act

Local Life editor David Sudworth goes underground to discover a thriving Wigan music and arts venue

D

eep in the bowels of Wigan’s Crawford Street lies a row of prisoner cells. Cold, damp and paint peeling from the brick work, this was society’s not-

so-subtle way of saying you’d hit rock bottom. However, the window, just above head height, provided a glimmer of hope for many a desperate defendant plotting a last gasp bid for freedom. “That doesn’t actually go anywhere,” says a cheery voice behind me. “We don’t quite know why they were put in - probably to give false hope.” If hopes and dreams were dashed on a daily basis the last time this place was used, that is certainly not the case today. Shut away from public gaze for many years, the town’s old courthouse and police station have been opened up once again as a fully fledged music and arts hub. And, unsurprisingly, it also hosts numerous ghost tours...

55

Built from 1888, Gerard Winstanley House, on Crawford Street, is better now known as The Old Courts. Run by former Hawkley Hall pupil Jonathan Davenport, his wife Becky, a former St John Rigby student, and David Jenkins, who went to Rainford High, the Old Courts is now firmly establishing itself as a venue capable of attracting bigger names to Wigan. Prior to its rebirth as an artistic hub, it was used for a period of time by the civil service. “When we got in, the courtroom had these horrible, brown carpet tiles and the parquet flooring had been concreted over,” laughs Jonathan, 33. “There’s also false ceilings and other stuff we’ve ripped out, and in the process have uncovered some really lovely parts of the building.

“The parquet flooring had been concreted” “Also, we’ve found fascinating stuff hidden down one of the funace heading columns near where the dock used to be, like letters to loved ones, carbolic soap, a length of rope and even a knife. We’re hoping to put all these on display eventually.” The building’s name comes from the Wigan political activist who founded the Digger Movement. It’s said that during decades of Communist rule in Russia, Winstanley was the only Englishman whose picture was allowed to be included on the Wall of Worthies in Moscow. Although the Old Courts is run as a not-for-profit Community Interest Company, that doesn’t mean that when it comes to putting on events, idealism gets in the way of prudent financial management. “We’ve got strong scruples and will support local acts,” says managing director David. “But we’re not stupid enough to think that by putting on local bands every week will give us enough money to ensure that we’re here in two years’ time. You see lots of organisations and

56

help from volunteers (one couple pitched in and in return they got the hire of the old courtroom for their wedding reception), there are some costs which cannot be avoided. One looming issue is the small matter of a £92,000 business rates bill. If they attain charitable status, this could be reduced by at least 80%, but the process is longwinded and by no means guaranteed. “If we put on an event, we cost it out down to the second,” says David, 34. groups which are around for two to three years and then they disappear because the Arts Council has decided that they want to fund something else. At the moment, there’s a big thing for funding festivals which is fine as a one-off event to tick a box but they don’t provide any continuity. That’s what we want to do - ensure continuity - and that’s why we have a 20 year lease from our private landlord.” The cost of restoring and running a large building is not insignificant. Although they have had a lot of

“We want to ensure continuity” “Rather than saying ‘yes’ or ‘no’ just on gut instinct, it’s about all of us understanding why we can or cannot do something.” Among the artists to have played the Old Courts since it opened in 2014 are Liverpool band Space, ex- The La’s bassist and Cast singer John Power

and Steve Craddock, the lead guitarist in ‘90s Britpop band Ocean Colour Scene. Wiganborn Brian Cannon, the man behind the Oasis and Verve covers in the 1990s, also has an office in the building. Jonathan says that the reason they can attract bigger names is because they understand that acts require a certain standard of venue, both on and off the stage. “Our Green Room, where bands relax before they go on stage, is filled with all sorts of stuff which we found lying around the place. A lot of acts love it for that reason, in that it’s quite unique and quirky, which is great. It’s about trying to get acts to think about Wigan, as a live music circuit venue, something it hasn’t been for a long time now.” For more information on The Old Courts, including details of upcoming events, visit www.theoldcourts.com

Morning

motivation By Abi Jackson

W

hen sun’s streaming in through the window, birds merrily tweeting in the trees, leaping out of bed in the morning is easy. But come winter, when it’s dark, gloomy and probably blowing a gale and drizzly too - it’s little wonder many of us find getting up more difficult. In fact, more than half of us (59%) admit getting up during winter is a ‘struggle’, according to research by Twinings English Breakfast tea, with Monday mornings the hardest (well, obviously!).

On average, we hit the snooze button once, giving ourselves an extra 9.36 minutes in bed (however, 2% confess to snoozing for more than 45 minutes each day!), and 18-24-year-olds grapple most with mornings, with 51% struggling to get up, compared to 17% of over-55s. Women also fare slightly worse than men, blaming the cold weather and darkness for making getting up a chore. We might not be a nation of winter morning people, but it seems, on the whole, we’re a resourceful bunch too, with many agreeing they use ‘morning motivation’ tools to help make the transition from

62

make sure you add a touch of adventure to your normal routine. Even things which may seem like an insignificant change can make a big difference.” So what little changes could you make? Here are some of Stewart’s top tips, plus some of our own, to give you that extra ‘morning motivation’ boost...

Sort out your sleep If you want getting up to feel easier, a good night’s sleep is essential. Yep, talk about stating the obvious, right? But let’s be honest, many of us are guilty of not prioritising good sleep, or keeping up bad habits that we know aren’t helping - like using our smartphones/iPads before bed. If you struggle to get up because you’re not getting enough sleep, are there things you can do to address that? bed to up a little easier. Perhaps unsurprisingly for us Brits, a ‘nice hot cup of tea’ was the most popular tactic for starting the day, while at the other end of the scale, a mere 7% enticed themselves out of bed with a workout session. “The way you start your day can make a big difference to the way you feel all day,” says psychotherapist Robert Stewart, who analysed the Twinings research. “So ensure you start it right,

64

breakfast, rich in protein, carbohydrates and vitamins, will give your body and brain a good boost, says Stewart. It might mean you have to get up a little earlier to make the time, but being a breakfast person will pay off in countless ways - as well as helping you establish a positive, productive morning routine, studies show that people who always eat a decent breakfast are less likely to be overweight and tend to be healthier.

Start with a mindful activity Mindfulness meditation is growing in popularity all the time, helping us manage stress, depression, anxiety and find greater focus. If you don’t fancy sitting still to meditate, find other ways to connect with the moment and start the day with a sense of

65

clarity and calm. “Whether it’s doing some stretching or having a cup of tea, learn to take a few minutes to savour a moment, and be in that moment as much as possible,” says Stewart. “Mindful activities have shows to promote oxytocin and serotonin release, which will set up our mood for the day.”

Light up Winter’s lack of daylight affects most of us to some degree, but for some people, the extra darkness is a real problem. If this is you, could investing in an illuminating alarm clock - which gradually lights up the room, mimicking a summer’s morning - help?

All in the prep If mornings are usually a lot of flap and chaos hunting high and low for things you need, madly pulling clothes out of your wardrobe, berating yourself for being late again as you dash out the door (the coffee you just made still sitting on the side in the kitchen) - well, of course it’s not your favourite time of day. few minutes the night before getting organised: get your outfit ready, pack your bag? I know; groundbreaking! (Now if only I could follow my own advice...!)

Make showering a joy Yes, washing fulfils a function. But they say happiness is all about the little things, and your morning shower is an easy way to turn an everyday task into a real pleasure. I’m not saying spend ages in there using up loads of hot water, but why not invest in a shower gel you love, with a scent that perks up the senses and leaves your skin feeling gorgeous?

Transform your commute Dread your commute? Late and overcrowded trains; traffic jams and impatient road-users - what is there to like about commuting? There’s no magic wand that’s going to transform those things, but we can transform our attitudes, and how we use this time. If you commute by train, it’s the perfect time

to lose yourself in a good book. Drive or walk - how about listening to music or a podcast? Retrain your brain to see this part of the day as a meaningful and rewarding window. You never know, you might even start looking forward to it. (And if you don’t commute, you could still start the day with an activity like this).

Care in your OWN Home ASK AMANDA! Amanda Barlow is the Registered Care Manager for Right at Home – she answers your questions.

Can you tell me about memory loss support? ANSWER. People today often use the term “Alzheimers” to describe short term memory loss or dementia. However, Alzheimers is just one form of dementia or memory loss, although the most common. Our staff have attended a “Dementia Champions” course run by the Alzheimers’ Society to raise awareness of memory loss. The course emphasized how the memory loss affects people differently, and the rate of progression varies greatly between individuals. This means each person should have a carefully tailored support package.

We assess every client and talk to their next of kin to identify what they require. People experiencing memory loss can become suddenly confused and emotional and our kind carers can offer support and reassurance. We focus on what someone can do, this means we can help customers with activities such as cooking or visit places of local interest. It is well known that people often remember the past much more than the present, our carers can chat and help someone reminisce. As some people forget the everyday little things we help arrange appointments, prompt medication and provide accompanied transport. We find that for a next of kin supporting someone with memory loss it is stressful. We provide respite care, support from just an hour, through to larger blocks of care, overnight and even cover a holiday. This allows a loved one to take a break and do something they enjoy.

If we can support someone with memory loss, please call Amanda 01257 696 050

Financial planning

New Year Resolutions! by David K Barton APFS Cert CII(MP), Chartered Financial Planner and Managing Director

H

appy New Year to all Local Life readers, let’s hope you will all ‘Prosper’ throughout 2016. Apologies for the plug but it’s the only time of year that I think I can get away with it. With 2016 now underway, your New Year’s resolutions should now be in place. Amongst the favorites are, more exercise, dieting, less drink etc. Sadly, all these involve an element of pain and deprivation, and therefore it is hardly surprising that even the most committed of us tend to allow the promises made to fall by the wayside mid Feb at the latest. One resolution that you may want to retrospectively add to your list, one that involves very little pain but can have significant benefits, is to have an investment health check. Every January I notice a significant increase in the number of enquiries from Local Life readers who want to gain control of their portfolio by having an investment health check. Often these readers complain about their portfolio being “all over the place”, and feel that they have lost complete control of their portfolios with untouched piles of paper hanging around the house

representing different investments from different companies. When questioned, many readers didn’t have a clue how well or badly their investments had been performing. That’s when I introduce them to our Wealth Management Service, which helps people to; • Retake full control of investments rather than getting swamped with paperwork and information • Have ‘peace of mind’ knowing that an expert is also keeping an eye on investments • Invest in a wide choice of leading companies without being tied in to a single company/fund • Just deal with ‘one firm’ for all of his different investments rather than having to speak to different companies for various funds • Obtain an immediate portfolio valuation rather than enduring lengthy telephone calls to numerous call centres or waiting weeks for an out of date valuation to arrive by post. Indeed one of our clients described the difference between the old way of managing investments and using the Prosper Wealth Management Service as “an absolute revelation”. If you would like to know a little bit more information before getting in touch please feel free to visit our website www.prosper-ifa.co.uk or email us to request a brochure. The cost for the initial consultation is met by us and you are under no obligation. If you invest in the stock market the value of your investments can go down as well as up and you may not get back the full amount invested.

The value of investments, and the income derived from them, can go down as well as up and you can get back less than you originally invested.

Demand

increasing

A Wigan homecare provider is increasing training as demand for its services rocket. Home Instead Senior Care has announced the release of 60 free training places to cope with burgeoning demand. Chiefs say a perfect storm of an ageing population and downward pressure on social care budgets has led to an imbalance, and more people are now needed to provide care which will enable elderly people to remain in their own homes for as long as possible. Sarah Singleton, of Home Instead in Wigan said: “The impact of a national shortage of carers is being felt locally and creating problems for the elderly in particular. That’s why we have just released 60 training places for people who wish to work in the care sector. Our service is companionship-based so people don’t need to have experience. What’s really important is that people have the right attitude and a caring and empathetic nature.” Anyone interested in applying should contact 01942 566624 or visit homeinstead.co.uk/wigan.

Venue expansion bid

Network in Blackrod

An Aspull restaurant is poised to expand. K’s Bar on Scot Lane may be given permission to extend its floorspace by moving into the tanning salon next door at number 49. Papers lodged with Wigan Council’s planning department say that, as part of the expansion, the applicant wants to extend current hours of operation from 8am-midnight Monday to Thursdays and Sundays, and 8am12.30am Fridays and Saturdays. An agent acting on behalf of the applicant said: “The proposal is to internally link the existing restaurant to the proposed restaurant. Externally, the property will be repainted and redesigned to look as one. There are no sites available for the expansion of a local business that is better than the premises which are proposed. In addition, any move to a location further afield would result in these two premises becoming vacant.”

Bolton’s newest networking event kicks off on Friday, February 5, at the Mercure Georgian House Hotel in Blackrod. First Friday, which as the name suggests, is held on the first Friday of every month, and is hosted by Jon Melia of Lostock IT Services. Organisers say it’s a great opportunity to meet likeminded people in an informal, friendly atmosphere. There are no joining fees or costs, just buy your own drinks and food and network in the company of other local businesses. The event takes place between 12:30pm and 2pm. For more details call Jon on 07971 065156.

Planning for

growth by Chris Alcock - CMA Accountancy

A

s we enter 2016 many of us have set ourselves goals with regards to fitness, holidays or our finances.

If you are a business owner, now is the perfect time to think about what you want to accomplish within your business in 2016, and for you to start to put your thoughts and ideas into a plan. Business planning is a vital step for success within any industry. Without a measurable plan of action, it’s easy to lose track of what you are aiming to achieve. A good business plan will focus the mind, clarify ideas and define long-term objectives. So why not take firm control of your company’s future with a simple business plan?

Starting a business plan: Financial and business planning can seem daunting at first, especially if you haven’t done a similar exercise before. To simplify matters, here are three easy questions to ask yourself. Write down your answers and they will instantly form the basis of your business plan: > Where is your business at right now? Make an assessment of your business as it is at the moment, look at your strengths and weaknesses and think about how to utilise your strengths to increase performance and profitability. > Where do you want your business to be? Think about any new products or services you can offer your customers, or ways of expanding your existing

offering to new customers. Set achievable targets and goals and revise them regularly. > How will you get there? Think about what resources you will need to ensure your aims and goals are achieved. Look at the key areas in which your business needs to perform and start to measure them through key performance indicators (KPIs). What gets measured gets managed!

What to do next: It is a great idea to talk through your answers with someone outside of your business, who is impartial but has a solid understanding of your goals. Here at CMA, as well as making sure your business finances are in the best shape possible, we are also experienced business advisers and can provide expert assistance to help you grow. We go the extra mile and work with you to understand your current position and future business goals. We can help you to devise a full, extensive plan to ensure your business thrives. Food & Drink

Make

Hay

By Kate Whiting

D

onna Hay, whose bestselling cookbooks are famously filled with crisp, mouthwatering images, has just published The New Easy, which comes with the promise of “simple meal ideas that are big on flavour but low on fuss”. The mum-of-two has managed to incorporate “all the superfood ingredients” - like quinoa, chia seeds and kale - into her recipes, which are split into ‘Weeknights’ and ‘Weekends’, so they’re perfect for those who are hoping to get back on the lowcalorie wagon. “I’m all about balance though” says Hay, who lost three dress sizes by switching to healthy eating and an exercise regime that includes running and standup paddle boarding. “I know that if I’ve enjoyed quite a lot of great food and drink, then I need to balance it out a bit, with a few extra kilometres on my run or a few more salads and meat-free days. “I don’t believe in extreme diets or cutting things out completely - just simply enjoying a great range of food that’s fresh, light and packed with vegetables and nutritious foods.” Hay knows how tough it can be to cook from scratch during the week, so she’s used “lots of great time-saving tricks” in the new cookbook. “A lot of the sweets are made with a dough or batter you can make in a food processor, or cakes you can make using a simple batter in just one bowl,” she says. “My food-processor carrot cake has become one of my go-to desserts. “In my recipes for weeknights and casual weekends, I’ve used clever store cupboard

ingredients, like store-bought puff pastry to make gorgeous tomato tarts, or caramelised onion relish in a super-easy marinade for lamb. “There are lots of easy pastas with new flavours and a delicious chicken curry that you can leave to bake in the oven - just really easy but delicious meals.” But exercise is also an extremely important element in her daily routine. “No matter how busy I am, I always try to make sure I still find time for exercise. Most mornings or evenings I go for a run - it really helps me relax, destress and focus on the things I need,” she says. But when she has time, Hay enjoys nothing better than cooking a relaxed meal for close friends at home, as long as it involves a little of her favourite guilty pleasure... “My perfect meal would usually also involve icecream in any form - it’s like happiness in a bowl!” Tempted? Try some of Hay’s delicious, easy meals for yourself...

The New Easy by Donna Hay is published in paperback by HarperCollins, priced £18.99.

Feast at the

Fox

by David Sudworth

A

lbert Einstein defined madness as doing the same thing over and over again, but expecting a different outcome.

Usually, I’m not one to quibble with the great minds of our time, but clearly the good Professor had never visited Fifteens At The Fox. I’ve been to the Roby Mill venue, owned by high-profile local pub boss Tony

recently and, having decided that we were both starving, opted to share a few dishes. For starters, we went for the Trio of Mini Fishcakes (seabass and ginger, crab and monkfish and Thai salmon and prawns) served with a garlic mayonnaise and sweet chilli dipping sauce, Homemade Chicken Liver Pate with Toasted Brioche and Homemade Chutney and the Deep-Fried Breaded Brie with Cranberry Sauce. Flavours here are fulsome, and I was particularly impressed with homemade chutney. It is so easy to render a homemade inedible by dousing it in vinegar, but the Fox didn’t make that same mistake. The brie was well cooked and I was impressed with the crispy breaded coating, which allowed the cheese to keep its shape even after being attacked by two burly blokes with forks. For the mains, we ordered Tagliatelle with Strips of Steak, Olive Oil, Garlic and a Hint of Chilli, Homemade Roasted Mediterranean Vegetable

Callaghan, several times now, and on each occasion come away with a different experience. And it’s not just the food (more of that in a moment), but the building, like its owner, oozes character. Where else would you find mismatching light fittings, collections of matchbooks pinned to the wall and a basket of reading specs just in case you leave yours at home? It’s all done by Tony’s fair hand, and a breath of fresh air compared to the identikit gastropubs which litter our green and pleasant land. My colleague Chris and I met at the Fox for lunch

81

to give it the silky feel. When taken alongside the delicate hints of chilli, it provides for a really funky, yet sophisticated, dish. Chris really enjoyed the sole, which he informs me was cooked to perfection and seasoned in just the right way. And the Posh Chips were very more-ish, to the point that it was a shame when there were none left. Dessert came in the form of a Chocolate Brownie served with Twickers (Twix and Snickers) Ice Cream. When an eaterie goes to these lengths with its ice cream, you know they put a lot of store by having fun. And that’s what you get from the Fox; a feast with fun. It’s quirky but not weird, fun but not ridiculous. Moreover, the food is of a high standard. And Tony Callaghan wouldn’t have it any other way. Fifteens @ The Fox Roby Mill Lancashire WN8 0Q Telephone: 01695 628178

Pizza, a Fillet of Sole Resting on Crushed, Buttered New Potatoes With a Prawn, Lemon Garlic & Herb Butter, and a Serving of Posh Chips, seasoned with Maldon Salt, Black Pepper, Truffle Oil & Parmesan Shavings. Now, lots of places ‘do Italian’ but results vary, especially outside the big cities. But I can tell you the Fox’s fayre is bellisimo, and the reason is straightforward; they understand that true Italian food is much more than just tomatoes and garlic. For example, the pizza was topped with delicious aubergines, and the freshly-homemade dough gave it that lightness which you just can’t fake. Likewise, the tagliatelle (from the Italian verb ‘to cut’) works fabulously with the steak and olive oil

or both seasoned walkers and those doughty souls still ploughing on with their New Year resolution to get more active, the weather of late has been nothing short of dreadful. Heavy rainfall has rendered the ground very boggy to the point that even a 15 minute stroll can feel like the Krypton Factor assault course. So that’s why this month, our walk sticks mainly to country lanes. Not only is this handy for the wet months, but also for cyclists. We begin at the magnificent Heskin Hall, just off Wood Lane, PR7 5PA and follow the path south-

westwards towards Bannister Green. At this point, you get a first glimpse of Harrock Hill, which we will be tackling later on. You also hear the first sounds of gentle running water, a feature of this stroll given the amount of brooks and other watercourses in the area. Following Bannister Green in the southern direction until you come to the first turning on the right, Halfpenny Lane. Follow this lane for 0.8 miles until you double-back on yourself to take a left down Hall Green Lane. Five minutes later, go left as you join Salt Pit Lane and follow it to its junction with

According to Bill Oddie types, large numbers of Goldcrest arrive here from Scandinavia during the winter for shelter.

Ridley Lane. Before that, we pass the splendid St Peter and St Paul RC Church. Built in 1830, it is the oldest of the three churches in Mawdesley and its graveyard serves as a useful hunting ground for family history enthusiasts. It’s at this point, around 2.5 miles in, you turn left onto Ridley Lane and start to slowly climb. Left again, onto Bentley Lane, then right in to Sanderson Lane. You’ll continue this for the next mile or so, but with a 250ft elevation to conquer, it can be energysapping. However, the views do compensate, as we were afforded a unencumbered sight of Winter Hill and the northern parts of Chorley. Peter, our fearless lensman, knows a thing or two about wildlife, something piqued his interest on Harrock Hill. Apparently, in the trees on Sanderson Lane, he spotted a Goldcrest, the UK’s smallest bird.

Back on the ground, we still had about three miles left to complete, but mercifully it was all downhill. Once at the top end of Sanderson Lane, turn left onto Coopers Lane and follow this for three quarters of a mile until you can take a right onto Barnskin Lane. Our stay on Barnskin Lane was fleeting, as we soon turned left on to Town Lane which snakes its way

back to Wood Lane. It was here where I felt my feet beginning to ache, probably because of our exertions on Harrock Hill. We were also a good six miles in by this point, and for some reason I tend to have an automatic cut off point somewhere around the five mile mark! Salvation for the weary walker is at hand though, with the Farmer’s Arms pub on this last stage of the route, and of course there’s a host of attractions and refreshments at Heskin Hall Farmers Market. At around 6.3 miles, this walk, bar the climb at Harrock Hill, won’t pose many problems for those in good health, either by foot or bicycle. It’s also a distinct bonus that, although 95% of it is on country lanes, the traffic was practically non-existent to the point where toddlers and pets were roaming freely along the byways. The route can also be varied to take in some of the fields as there are ample Rights of Ways across the fields, if of course the weather ever decides to eventually dry up...

Hall for all Heskin Hall was built around 1545 and is considered one of the best examples of Tudor architecture in the North West. In 1556, the estate was bought by Richard Molyneux who also bought lands from Mary Seymour, the widow of Thomas Seymour. Thomas was the father of Jane Seymour, a wife of Henry the VIII. The last people to occupy the hall as a home were Lord and Lady Lilford in the 1960s. She was an exdancer and actress and, on their divorce in 1969, the hall went to her as part of her settlement. Since then, it has been used for commercial activities, including by Blackburn College and a double glazing firm, who both used it for training purposes.

All-New Jaguar

XF by Tim Barnes-Clay

T

he first words out of my mouth when I handed my all-new Jaguar XF demonstrator keys back at Pamplona Airport were “I’m going to miss that motor”. And there’s a reason for that: the fresh British saloon I had on test in Spain made my life far more relaxing than I had envisaged. Now, let me make it clear; the two days I had with the XF involved traversing snaking roads high into the Pyrenees, hammering along fast stretches of motorway and negotiating narrow urban streets. The part of northern Spain I was in involves rural transport, too – and, with that, the odd wandering herd of cows, goats and sheep. My point is that, whether driving at 70mph or sat still waiting for a shamble of sheep to move, the XF looks after you. The soft leather seats, the hushed cabin, the excellent brakes and, even the sound system, make you feel as though a palace has been given four wheels.

97

When there is a chance to bury your right foot into the deep carpet, the creamy smooth powertrain of the rear wheel drive Jaguar XF 380PS S, on test here, pulls the scenery by the side of your head briskly. It is done in such an uncomplicated way that the speedo needle can nudge three figures all too easily. Pure performance aside, handling is stunningly good. Indeed, the 2016 XF offers the fun already available from the Jaguar XJ, mainly due to its precise steering, lack of body roll and excellent traction. This was demonstrated perfectly when we stopped off for a bit of cheeky track driving at the Circuito de Navarra. This modern motorsport race track, near Los Arcos, is a 3.933 km permanent road course that hosts the Superleague Formula series and the FIA GT1 World Championship. Under expert instruction I managed to get the XF to behave like the beast it can be. The car will hold on to the surface like Velcro, only stepping out when pushed to levels you’d never attempt on a public highway. Jaguar’s PR team did a good job by really showing us that the new XF isn’t just a mile muncher – it’s a machine offering pure dynamism. In other words, it truly is a driver’s car. The specification levels of the new XF are lavish. The cabin is a seamless blend of contemporary luxury materials and finishes, traditional Jaguar

craftsmanship and state-of-the art tech, with features such as a reconfigurable 12.3-inch TFT instrument cluster, laser head-up display and an InControl Touch Pro premium infotainment system. What’s more, stereo camera technology enables autonomous emergency braking, lane departure warning and lane-keep assist systems. Adaptive Cruise Control with Queue Assist takes the stress out of motorway driving in stop-go traffic by tracking the vehicle in front, at a safe distance. With its plethora of talents and refreshed, more modern exterior, the XF is soon etched on your mind. From a distance, there are slight hints of Audi at the rear, but the car doesn’t look as much like the other premium executive saloons you see doubleparked outside Michelin-starred restaurants in Chelsea or in City of London corporate car parks. In summary, this new XF is loaded with a host of awesome tech, making the driving experience as luxurious and as exciting as possible. The Jaguar’s cabin is sophisticated and sturdily built and the car is rapid, whichever model you opt for. Indeed, the Jaguar XF 380PS S model, driven for this review, is as fast as you are ever likely to need.

Bring some froth to your Award Winner

garden! by Angie Barker

D

uring the winter months I do have a tendency to bang on about evergreen structure in the garden. Box hedges, evergreen shrubs and trees do a wonderful job of binging interest to the garden, in even the darkest months. However the real joy of a garden for me, are herbaceous perennials – these are the plants which bring the ‘froth’ to a planting scheme, bringing colour and textural foliage to a border. They plug the gaps between the structural planting. Herbaceous perennials are plants which, in the main, will die down in winter, disappearing beneath the soil and taking a rest during the worst of the weather, emerging again the following year. Some will flower in spring, some early summer, mid summer and autumn thereby providing almost year long flower and colour. There is a misconception that herbaceous plants are high maintenance. Well it is true that some can be, but if you choose the right ones, they can be very low maintenance and easy to grow without the need for staking or any particular attention. Here are some suggestions:

Angie is a qualified award-winning garden designer who will plan your garden to your needs from start to finish, supplying reputable contractors and the ideal plants.

Early spring – Helleborus x hybridus. Lots of pretty colours to chose from Spring – Aquilegia vulgaris. Many colours are available in single and double flower forms Early summer – Astrantia major – ‘Hadspen Blood’ is a lovely one and they will tolerate shade Mid summer – Hardy Gernaiums – lots and lots to chose from – ‘Ann Folkard’ is beautiful and loves to scramble through other plants. It flowers for ages Late summer and into autumn– Rudbeckia fulgida var. deamii – gorgeous yellow cone flowers which attract butterflies Hubby loves these plants too for bringing colour to the garden. Even if he refers to them as “the yellow one”, “the blue one” or “the one in the middle”! The names aren’t important as long as they give you a pleasing effect. The garden centres will be bringing their herbaceous stuff into stock over the next few weeks so take a look and bring some froth into your garden.

Arley Cabinet Company Ltd Excellent service from start to finish. From my initial contact right through to completion of the work, nothing was too much trouble. I am more than satisfied with the quality of their work. Highly recommended.

Freshbuild Construction Freshbuild Construction worked with a profes sional manner. They kept us informed throug hout the whole house renovation, and it was exactly 9 weeks. They were clean and tidy and removed all waste. Newman Roofing Mr Newman was quick to identify the source of the condensation and suggest a solution. The service was fast, reliable and professional.

J. Dillon Electrical Services I am completely satisfied with all work carried out. J Dillon Electrical Services did a wonde rful job replacing the electrics and kept disrupt ion to the property and decor to an absolute minimu m.

Just Imagine UK Denise is very good, and very clean in her work. We would definitely use her again; this is the second time she has done work for us, excellent. FG Welch Central Heating & Gas Services Ltd Having been let down by two other traders - not part of the Wigan Good Trader Scheme it was a pleasure to find a firm that displayed compe tence and integrity in a friendly and courteous manner.

The comments above are testimonials from Wigan residents taken from the Wigan Council Good Trader scheme For details visit www.traderregister.org.uk/wigan If you’re a tradesperson who wants to apply to enrol on the scheme, please email Trading Standards at ts@wigan.gov.uk

A View From The Lump Local gossip, gripes and goings-on Good health! Rejoice - January is done with for another year! It’s a month I personally loathe, and made all the worse by people boasting about how they’ve not touched a drop of booze since December 31. Yes, for some inexplicable reason, Dry January (aka - staying sober in the most depressing month of the year) is now seen as A Good Idea. So it was with delicious irony that, as seemingly most of Wigan was drying out, a public consultation began on Wigan Leisure & Culture Trust’s latest plans for... a brewery! Yes, the very organisation whose

remit is to get Wigan healthy is wanting permission for a micro brewery at Haigh Country Park Stables Complex. Not sure how it ties in with WLCT’s mantra of ‘Inspiring Healthy Lifestyles’, as per its website, but still. It’s often said that people in officialdom are so incompetent they couldn’t run a booze up (or words to that effect) in a brewery, Soon, the suits at WLCT may be able to prove us wrong...

Turning point As a mild-mannered individual, I’m not usually prone to bouts of cursing. Yet while driving from Haigh to Standish the other day, I did have cause to vent my spleen at the anonymous idiot who ‘decided’ that there should be no left turn onto High Street from Rectory Lane. So a simple journey to the library on Cross Street turned something in to a Kafkaeque nightmare because I was sent all the way around the houses to get to my destination. No wonder traffic in Standish is so dreadful.

Ground control I was sad to hear the passing of David Bowie. But nevertheless, I couldn’t help think that the coverage about his demise was a little OTT. Yes, he did some great songs, but he

also came up with some tosh (The Laughing Gnome, anyone?) However, it was the so-called rush to gush which really got on my wick. Within seconds of his death, it seemed everyone on Twitter was a Bowie fan. Then, a few days later, the actor Alan Rickman shuffled off this mortal coil. Again, social media was abuzz with tributes. These two celeb deaths even united Wigan’s normally warring councillors in grief. So many to choose from but locally, we had Standish’s Gareth Fairhurst tweeting: “#RIPDavidBowie He died how he lived - ahead of his time. A true icon.” Meanwhile, Shevington’s Damian Edwardson told his Twits: “Plant Earth is blue And there’s nothing I can do.” Goodbye Mr Bowie. A sad day for music.” Heartfelt I’m sure, but, really, what about the state of our roads chaps?

The mane event You may recall my recent moan about the amount of horse muck on local lanes. Word now reaches me that the amount of ‘flygrazing’ on Metro land is worrying the great and good of the borough. Moreover, they are now drawing up an action plan. Will it work? “All bets are off” says my Library Street spy.
