Community Spirit We love local news (the clue is in the name) and community spirit and when I’m out and about looking for inspiration for the next magazine, one place always stands out from the crowd! I would like to pay a little tribute to Rainhill, it must be an entertaining place to live, no matter what night of the week it may be there is always something going on – and residents show no sign of slowing down anytime soon!

We also have plenty of other places for you to visit so if you fancy getting out there and having a look at what the area has to offer then try out our latest Jack’s Tracks on p34-37. Jack will lead you on a fivemile walk taking in Halsall’s picturesque scenery. National Wildflower Centre The October half term is looming and if the weather carries on like it is you might be stuck for something to do.

Then comes the spooky stuff – on Friday 26th you can attend a Halloween family supper for £12 between 5.308pm and on Saturday 27th you can get involved in some Halloween Horrors with the Knowsley Rangers between 1-3pm. Unless otherwise stated all the workshops are free to visitors (entry fee applies) but please book ahead to ensure your place.

Street Stories Have you ever wondered how the street you live on got its name or indeed where it came from? Well wonder no more as Prescot Library will be hosting a session called Street Stories. This free session lead by local historian Ken Pye will take a look at some of the curious tales behind some of Liverpool’s street names. Half Term Howlers Fright night is just around the corner – no I’m not talking about Halloween but the half term holidays! Don’t worry though Rainhill Library has got some spooky fun on hand to help entertain the kids. At the Citadel

You & the law Do you know what to do if you are involved in a Road Traffic Accident?

With the winter fast approaching and bringing with it bad weather hopefully you will be fortunate enough not to be involved in a road traffic accident. But if you were to be involved in an accident would you know what to do?

The Institute of Advanced motorists has provided some helpful guidance, which will take just a few minutes to read over. First of all, if you have the option, pull over and stop where it is safe. Turn off your car’s engine and put on your hazard warning lights if it is appropriate to do so. Make sure that you keep yourself safe and check that others are safe too.

If you, or anyone else involved need the emergency services then dial 999.

Stay calm – you are required by virtue of the Road Traffic Act to swap some details with the other driver(s). This may not be possible due to injury or if the other driver has driven off. If for some reason you don’t provide your details you must report the accident to the police within 24 hours.

The information you must provide to the other driver(s) includes your name and address, the vehicle registration number and the details of the owner of the vehicle. You should also ask the other driver for these details. If someone is injured then you must ensure that you exchange details.

The accident must be reported to your insurance company as soon as you can. Don’t forget, however, you can consult a solicitor of your choice if you need to make a claim or take advice in relation to the accident. It is helpful if you can get names and addresses of any witnesses and also take photographs of the scene and any vehicle damage. It is also worthwhile noting carefully how many people are in the other vehicle.

Incidentally if as a result of ice/snow on the road another driver collides with your car then the accident would still be their fault. It is always the responsibility of the car driver to drive at a safe speed and a safe distance from the vehicle in front.

If affordable luxury really existed, it couldn’t be true luxury, right? Wrong, I have found my own slice of heaven right in the centre of St Helens – and the luxe-ometer is through the roof! For the majority of us luxuries are few and far between but an escape from the ordinary doesn’t have to cost the earth, as I found out after being invited to Renaissance to sample one of their new spa treatments.

One of the signature treatments is the exotically titled Balinese massage – this is a full body, deep tissue massage using a blend of aromatherapy oils to enhance deep relaxation and soothe aching muscles. Gentle strokes are used, combined with stretches and long kneading movements, to release tense muscles and stress, and improve the flow of circulation around the body. This

ancient technique can help with sports injuries, stress, sleep disorders, anxiety and depression to name a few.

I arrived at Renaissance on College Street and after a quick rundown of my medical history my friendly therapist explained a bit more about my treatment and enquired as to what level of pressure I could tolerate. I was shown into a softly lit room and was immediately enveloped with a therapeutic aroma from the essential oils.

This was just what I needed after a busy and tense day; looming deadlines will do that to you! My treatment started and I was soon feeling waves of relaxation flood over me and I was hoping the next hour would pass slowly. I quickly began to sink into the bed and the soothing music really enhanced my experience – no whale music here!

What I really appreciated was that my therapist played things just right in terms of communication.

Once she had found out what pressure I needed she stayed silent, only to check sporadically if the pressure was correct. She let the traditional rhythmic Balinese movements do the talking and my muscles were at her mercy.

The beauty of this massage is its ability to pick up on areas of stress and tension that you didn’t even know were bothering you – niggles that we just learn to live

can be a thing of the past. Within just 60 incredible minutes she had ensured that I was relaxed, revived and ready for the week ahead.

Roasted Pumpkin Soup Ingredients

medium cloves garlic, unpeeled • 3-5 (2lbs) pumpkin, peeled and deseeded • 1kg oil • Olive onion, finely chopped • 11/2large teaspoon ground nutmeg • 1 teaspoon ground cumin • Salt and pepper, taste • 1 litre (1 3/4 pints)tovegetable • Cream, for serving (optional) or chicken stock • Freshly grated nutmeg, or chilli flakes for • serving (optional)

Method Preheat oven to 190C / Gas mark 5.

Chop the pumpkin into even-sized chunks (about 5cm / 2 inches across). Place the pumpkin with the unpeeled garlic cloves in a roasting tin. Drizzle with a little oil and toss to coat the pieces.

Bake in the oven. Check after 20 minutes and remove the garlic at that point and set it aside. Roast the pumpkin until it’s soft and tender. Be careful not to burn it.

Heat a teaspoon of oil in large (at least 2.7 litre capacity) saucepan over medium heat. Add onion, nutmeg, cumin, salt and pepper. Fry gently, stirring, until the onion is just softened slightly.

Add the roasted pumpkin and stock and bring to the boil. Reduce heat and simmer, uncovered, until onion is completely soft and the stock has reduced a little. The more the stock reduces, the thicker the soup will be and the more concentrated the flavour.

Season to taste. Peel the roasted garlic and add it to the soup. Remove from the heat and allow to cool for about half an hour before pureeing in batches in a blender.

Serve the soup hot with cream and/or grated nutmeg/ chilli flakes if preferred.

Prescot Town Team

The recently formed Prescot Town Team is going from strength to strength after receiving some great feedback after the very successful summer festival. The festival was held on Saturday 25th August with children’s activities, a bouncy castle and face painting – and the resounding response from businesses and local residents is that the Town Team is doing a fantastic job!

Karen Maloney, owner of Renaissance Health & Beauty, is spearheading the campaign and she told Local Life, “We are continuing to pull ideas out of the plan that we produced for the Portas bid and use them to move Prescot forward. We are looking for people who are passionate about Prescot and who have ideas that we can use to make our town better.”

Since the last edition of Local Life, Knowsley Safari Park, Prescot Rotary Club, Prescot Cables and the Museum have all backed the plans to try and improve the town. With that in mind her family and friends have organised a series of fund raising events in her name to raise money for the Walton Neuroscience Fund – the hard work is paying off and the charity has already managed to raise a whopping £8,536.

The event will be held in memory of Leah Davies from Lowton, who was killed in an horrific road accident in July. She was in intensive care for a week but her injuries were so severe she never regained consciousness and lost her battle for life. Leah was just 19 and had she survived she would have spent a considerable time at the neurological unit at Walton Hospital.

Knowsley Works Knowsley Works is Knowsley Council’s specialist jobs agency – the team offers a wide variety of services aimed at finding work for people who have been jobless for some time. The team have now set up work clubs in your area to support you in your search for work. The clubs are a friendly local place where you can meet other people, share your experience and talk to the advisors about any of your employment issues. St Helens Sugarcrafters What is Sugarcraft anyway? Well, Sugarcraft can be described as three-dimensional cake decorating. It covers a huge variety of styles, and includes characters and models made from sugar paste or fondant, to amazingly lifelike flowers.

If this sounds of interest to you then you can attend a free open day hosted by the St Helens Sugarcrafters on Saturday 20th October. There will be lots to see on the day including cakes, models, plaques, flowers and novelties - there will also be a demonstration so you can have your first taste of sugar crafting.

Sing Jubilee St Helens Choral Society would like to invite you to their latest evening concert on Saturday 27th October.

Often it’s the case that restaurants tucked away in hotels are overlooked when we’re searching for that perfect place to eat. So when the call came in to review one of the best hotel restaurants in the area my taste buds jumped at the chance! The Hillcrest Hotel on Cronton Lane, Widnes is home to the rather stylish and quirkily named eatery Cu Restaurant and I just can’t wait to share it with you.

The restaurant has recently undergone extensive renovations and just in case you didn’t know is open to the general public - so there is no excuse to neglect this chic, relaxed restaurant and its modern and moreish English cuisine. The inspiration for Cu Restaurant came from the all-embracing copper finishes smattered throughout the decor - and it’s impressive!

The menu changes regularly, depending on the time of the year and the quality of produce available, but the first thing that struck me was the sheer choice and imaginative selection of dishes. We

were presented with a full list of interesting salads, catch of the day and plenty of locally-produced meats all promising to be fresh, seasonal and locally sourced.

I chose to start with the rather traditional sounding ham and eggs – but don’t be deceived we’re not talking about the work of Dr Seuss, but something rather more sophisticated. This was easily one of the best starters I have tasted; the ham hock terrine was meaty and full of flavour, slowly cooked so that it was perfectly tender. The terrine was served with poached quail eggs and a rich wholegrain mustard hollandaise, this dish had that X factor – bags of flavour and it looked amazing I could have eaten it again and again.

Now Ben loves all things seafood – he’s a bit of a fish connoisseur so it wasn’t a surprise to me that he went for the home-smoked mackerel pate to start.

The pate arrived on an impressive piece of slate that complimented the rustic texture of the pate. Ben assured me that his starter was light and refreshing and the satisfying flavour of the mackerel was perfectly fused with the creamy celeriac remoulade. This was a simple traditional dish that has effectively been ‘cheffed’ up, but with a bit of intelligent cooking delivers great results.

Being a bit of a carnivore I opted for the 8oz pave rump steak and I have never seen such an impressive presentation of food. The pave steak is

This dish was served with a wild mushroom fricassee, Savoy cabbage and celeriac crisps, and all-in-all a very decadent version of a British favourite.

After much deliberation on Ben’s part he decided to fill his boots with the ballotine of corn-fed chicken.

The succulent chicken slices were expertly stuffed with a colourful mixture of sweet corn veloute.

The hot and creamy corn centre added texture and depth to the chicken – which in most restaurants can be a bit bland and unimaginative. This was comfort food at its best – piping hot, satisfying and great presentation.

We perused the dessert menu initially for research purposes only, noting the five choices of dessert, a separate selection of ice creams and an inspired selection of cheeses – we were seduced by the coffee panacotta so we decided to share and I was glad we did! Rainhill Garrick The Rainhill Garrick Society invites you to join them for their 70th Anniversary production of the black comedy classic, Arsenic and Old Lace.

Mortimer Brewster, a theatre critic, discovers that his two spinster Aunts have taken to relieving the loneliness of old men by inviting them in for a glass of homemade elderberry wine. It just happens to be laced with arsenic and a pinch of cyanide; with the help of their delusional nephew Teddy they bury the bodies in the cellar of their house in Brooklyn.

This classic black comedy will have you rolling in the aisles as you meet Mortimer’s homicidal brother, Jonathan and his side kick Dr Einstein. Eccentricity is the norm for this family of wacky personalities so go along, sit back and enjoy the farce as the inept Brooklyn Police try to unravel the goings on at the Brewster household. Halsall & Clieves Hills

Thousands of cars a week whizz through Aughton on the A59 and Halsall on the A5147, and yet, in the area between these two busy roads, lies the very essence of England; Wonderful views, slow single track lanes, a leisurely canal, working farms, beautiful houses and a couple of country pubs. Try this five mile walk on a Sunday and you’ll be disturbed only by the occasional tractor or a bunch of lycra-clad Wiggins-wannabes whizzing by!

Ship Inn – Saracen’s Head Park near the Ship Inn, which is on Rosemary Lane, just off the main road from Crosby to Southport near Haskayne. Take a short cut through the beer garden and then turn left down the canal, immediately passing under the Ship bridge. If you’ve brought your camera along, you’ll instantly be presented with a few photoopportunities as there are lots of birds and colourful barges at this point.

You’ll follow the canal towpath for 1¼ miles. Clieves Hills will soon appear in the distance to your right, whilst the spire of St Cuthbert’s Church in Halsall

dominates the views on the left. There is a tall wall running along the left hand side of the canal which gives you quite a bit of shade on a hot day and along this wall are plentiful blackberries growing, so do take along a pot if you fancy a blackberry pie for tea!

Pass under bridges 23 (Flax Lane) and 24 (Hill Bridge) heading north-east. You’ll reach the Saracen’s Head at the next bridge, a place that is highly praised for the quality of its food and its real ales. Sadly, I had just had a full bowl of porridge and a banana for breakfast, so I resisted the temptation to stay awhile.

At this point, you leave the canal, cross the bridge in the direction of the Saracen’s Head and continue walking down Summerwood Lane. But before you set off in this direction, do stop awhile at the Halsall Navvy statue, which is diagonally opposite the Saracen’s Head.

Saracen’s Head – Clieves Hill You’ll walk 500 yards away from Halsall down Summerwood Lane, and you’ll then need to take a right turn down Narrow Lane. You’ll follow this country lane through a hamlet called Bangor’s Green. Just after Tristram’s Farm the road forks to the right and becomes Halsall Lane; carry on up the left fork in the same direction as previously (signposted Narrow Lane Clieves Hills). Going up a slight incline, you’ll pass Aughton Cliffs Farm and Acorn Cattery, both on the left.

Once you pass Narrow Lane farm on the left, turn directly left on the ‘s’ bend down Cut Lane and follow a sharp right hand bend within 30 yards of the junction.

Follow the telegraph poles up this road for 300 yards.

One you reach a sharp left hand bend you’ll see a public footpath symbol on one of the poles. Come off the road at that point and head uphill on the right hand perimeter of a field in the general direction of a wind turbine. Just at the top of the hill the tracks fork, head straight on up towards the distinctive tower of Clieves Hills House and follow the tracks to the right of the house and round the top of the field, exiting the field at the top right hand corner.

Clieves Hill – Ship Inn Once you exit the field, turn left for about 50 yards and then turn right down Shepherds Lane for 800 yards.

You’ll pass some pretty nice Mediterranean style houses at this point, before you come to a fine view over the Lancashire coast. Carry on walking down the hill; do help yourself to some blackberries on the way, I did leave a few for you! You’ll pass Segars Farm, Shepherds Farm and when you reach Clieves Farm, Shepherds Lane then becomes Halsall Lane, so turn left down Dicconsons Lane.

Go past Dicconsons Farm on the right and 180 yards later on a gentle left hand bend you’ll come across a public footpath sign taking you across the field.

So, we carried on down Dicconsons Lane for a further 900 yards. Once you reach Blundell House which is a United Utilities building, you need to turn right up Rosemary Lane. After 450 yards, you’ll come to Plex Lane on the right; just ignore this turn and carry on down Rosemary Lane for just under ¾ mile until you reach the Ship Inn….it’s time for a well-deserved pint!

The Halsall Navvy Back in the eighteenth century, the appalling state of transportation in this country was seen as a key constraint on Britain’s economic development. Roads were poor, and sometimes impassable in winter, while navigable rivers were few. John Hustler and other Bradford businessmen wanted a cheaper way to transport coal and limestone, and the outcome of their efforts was the Leeds and Liverpool Canal Act of 1770, which resulted in the construction of the first major canal in Great Britain. Work on the canal began in Halsall, and the very first sod was turned by Colonel Mordaunt in November 1770.

At one point 518 navigators (later called navvies) were employed on the project at any one time.

Many of these navvies were Scottish and had assisted the main engineer Robert Whitworth on the much smaller Forth and Clyde Canal. Navvies were often exploited by innkeepers and detested by locals, but overcame a tough physical daily existence to perform an engineering feat that bring the industrial revolution to the North West.

The best laid plans…

This month I thought I would report back on our trip to Southport Flower Show back in August - incidentally the oldest independent flower show in the country.

We decided to go on the Friday and I had a plan (as Hubby would tell you I always have a plan!) We would get there early and make for the show gardens before it got busy, then visit the plant stalls to shop for my list of plants, then eating and drinking followed by a leisurely mooch around the rest of the show.

Unfortunately my plans went awry when we took a wrong turn after the show gardens and ended up in the new Food Hall. What a treat it was. We emerged some time later laden with four large bottles of Yorkshire Punch (a non-alcoholic herbal drink which is supposed to aid a good nights sleep), several cheeses (the Snowdonia Cheese Company’s ‘Pickle Power’ and ‘Green Thunder’ are lovely though not for the faint hearted containing garlic and chilli) and all manner of other assorted goodies. Then it started to rain heavily. I suddenly realised that with umbrella in hand and laden down with several shopping bags we were not going to be able to carry any plants. I sulked all the way home on the train.

I woke up a day later to Hubby saying “do you fancy a trip to Southport?” Yes, I actually paid another £21 to get into the show

and buy the plants on my shopping list. They included two delightful grasses - Agrostis or Cloud Grass and Panicum ‘Heavy Metal’. A lovely Agastache - ‘Golden Jubilee’, Gaura ‘Gambit Rose’, and a couple of Thalictrums - to mention a few. These are all beautiful late summer bloomers and if you want to check them out for yourself type the Latin name into Google and you will see pictures of them.

Thanks Hubby - you do have a lot to put up with - I promise only one trip to Southport Flower Show next year. By the way, with regard to the Yorkshire Punch - it really does work.

Rainhill in Bloom

Rainhill in Bloom might be over for another year but the winners were celebrating their victories on Saturday 22nd September at the Rainhill Civic Societies Victorian Day. Judges from Rainhill Civic Society dedicated time earlier this year to checking out some of the spade work local residents had been putting into their floral creations.

Each year they hope to find winners for the best front garden and display of containers and baskets. The overall winner receives a silver rose bowl, which was donated to the Society in 1994 by Rainhill Parish Council, to celebrate the centenary of Parish Councils.

This year, for the first time, gardens and containers were judged as separate categories so the judges had their work cut out for them. The best three entries in each category received gardening tokens and all the winners, as well as four highly commended entries, received certificates.

The Society holds a programme of talks throughout the winter, all of which are open to the public free of charge. The meetings are held in the St Ann’s Millennium Centre in View Road - each month an informal Rainhill Remembered afternoon is held at the Millennium Centre when anyone with an interest in Rainhill can come along to exchange memories and discuss pictures and other documents about old Rainhill.

MAKING THE CONNEXION Citroen’s improved C1 citycar offers plenty of value.

Jonathan Crouch reports The first production car on UK roads resulting from an app created in collaboration with Facebook is Citroen’s C1 Connexion special edition. More than 24,000 Facebook users were invited to visit a virtual ‘factory floor’ to choose what the model should look like and what features it should have - and the Connexion is the result. But is it any good?

Small where it matters and big where it counts, this is a runabout perfectly adapted to life on the urban street.

Tight spaces? No problem. Tricky manoeuvres? Easy.

Low rate finance? Of course. With around 70 mpg to the gallon, the enviro-conscious 103g/km CO2 return means not only that Friends of the Earth will thank you, but that you’ll get free road tax for the first year of ownership and pay just £20 per year thereafter. All in all, there’s not much not to like.

Like all C1 buyers, purchasers of this Connexion model get only one engine choice, a frugal 68bhp 1.0i petrol unit.

There’s also a refreshing lack of gimmicks and nonsense that can plague some small cars. With this Citroen, you just get a citycar that’s small, manoeuvrable, easy to see out of and very simple to operate.

On the road, the petrol unit feels willing and revvy and well suited to the C1’s up and at ‘em personality. The steering takes some getting used to but it doesn’t require much effort to twirl the car into a parking space. It’s almost comical how little car there is behind the rear seats and when reversing into a parking bay, it’s worth remembering that you can afford to leave yourself some breathing room at the back.

Citroen have been regaining their reputation for bold and exciting interiors of late and the C1 continues that trend.

Headroom inside the car isn’t at all bad and the big glass area up front gives an airy feel to the cabin. The rear of the three-door car is notably more claustrophobic and is really only suitable for kids and short journeys. Rear knee-room in the five door car is little better but the boot space is the same, whether you choose the three or the five-door.

This special edition package costs from around £9,500, with a £350 premium if you want five rather than three doors. This includes ABS and EBD braking, variable power assisted steering, driver’s, front passenger’s & front lateral airbags, daytime-running LEDs, air conditioning and front electric windows.

To this tally, the Connexion package adds 14” ‘Rift’ alloy wheels, Caldera Black metallic paint, dark tinted rear windows and a ‘Connexion Exterior Look Pack’ including Scarlet Red paint for the door mirrors, door handles & rear number plate surround. Buyers also get the same Scarlet Red colour on the rev counter, the speedometer, the air vents, the gear lever, the centre console, the interior door & electric window button surrounds, the sill protectors and the carpet mats.

Some buyers may have reservations about the safety of such a minute car. Nudge up against a behemoth 4x4 in a car of the C1’s size and it’s easy to feel rather threatened, but the C1 is likely to have better safety systems than some sizeable SUVs. As well as a specially developed body structure that incorporates crumple zones and impact absorbers at the front and rear, the C1 also boasts ISOFIX child seat anchor points, reinforced doors and up to four airbags.

This C1 is the first petrol-powered Citroen to slot beneath the all-important 100g/km of CO2 figure. All variants get free road tax for the first year and as for fuel consumption,

well, the combined fuel consumption figure has edged up from 61.4mpg to 65.7mpg.

Insurance is rated at group 3 on the 1-50 groupings scale, which is a little dearer than the newest crop of rivals but again, not by enough to be significant. It still means that the C1 makes a great choice for newly qualified or younger drivers looking for their first car. The body panels are designed to pop straight off, which makes accident damage cheap and easy to fix.

You can’t accuse Citroen of not listening to its customers and this Connexion special edition is a good example of the French brand doing just that. More than 24,000 Facebook folk have managed to specify a very attractive citycar package that’ll look good on the showroom floor.

Expect a significant number of citycar buyers to make the Connexion.

If that happens, then you can bet this won’t be the last such collaboration we’ll see of this kind. Facebook is here to stay - and so is this C1.
