Dear Friends, When our neighbors decide to visit Loaves & Fishes for the first time, there is a mix of emotions they feel before arriving: apprehension, embarrassment, frustration, and depression. Whatever their circumstances, these individuals are often afraid to admit they need help because of the stigma attached to being low income, especially in DuPage County. Upon walking through the door, however, they are greeted with a warm smile, asked “how can we help you today?” and comforted knowing they will be receiving services to relieve their financial pressure. This welcoming environment is a result of Loaves & Fishes’ commitment to provide a dignified experience for our clients, which is the theme of this annual report. This past year, we experienced significant organizational change: we launched the Client Engagement Model, expanded the Child Nutrition Initiative, hired a new President & CEO, leased additional warehouse space near our main facility, and renovated our grocery market and sorting area. Throughout this transformation, we focused on creating the best experience for our clients. For example, the Client Engagement Model has created more meaningful dialogue between our volunteers and clients. Our renovated grocery market features wider aisles, an expanded produce department and additional hours – all decisions that are client service oriented. We strive to reduce the tension and pressure that our clients feel when they arrive so that by the time they finish their job counseling session, grocery trip or computer class, they are empowered to apply what they learned at Loaves & Fishes toward becoming self-sufficient. The Power of Dignity Annual Report is our recognition of the many volunteers, donors and community advocates who have helped us maintain a welcoming and warm atmosphere as we evolve to address hunger and poverty in our community. We appreciate your partnership to uphold our clients’ dignity so when they leave Loaves & Fishes, their heads are held high, and they know they live in a community that cares. Sincerely,
Megan K. Selck President/CEO
