SPOTLIGHT

Big Bleu Band

In 2011, singer Dave Smith started Big Bleu Band as a two-piece group with just himself and a lone guitar player. This duo found success in the music world and they quickly expanded.

Five years later in 2016, the band grew into an eight-piece group and still continues that way today.

The band consists of Smith as the lead singer, Brian Belskey as lead guitarist, Mitch Spera on the keyboard, Rob Cunningham on bass, Allison Waddington adding vocals, Danny Hummel playing drums, Nick DiSalvio on the sax and lastly, Pegean DiSalvio on the trumpet.

This group refers to themselves as a South Jersey band, all residing just outside of Philadelphia in places like Haddonfield and Deptford, but they prefer to venture the short distance down here and rock out by the shore.

“We choose to play by the beach because it draws in bigger crowds. There are just really

energetic and good vibes here. Up closer to the city, the crowd is usually a hit or miss, but down here we always have a decent crowd who are ready to have a good time,” Smith said.

Big Bleu Band refers to themselves as a “party band”. The group performs covers of songs in genres of Motown, disco and party rock.

While the band typically plays in Wildwood, Cape May and Sea Isle, the group is trying to branch out more into Atlantic County. One popular local place where they perform is Caroline’s in Somers Point. Smith even said Caroline’s is his favorite spot at which to play.

“We are trying to move up the coast a bit, play more often at Caroline’s and hopefully get to play at The Point soon,” Smith said.

Smith has been playing music since he was in high school and always knew it was more than just a

hobby to him. He started this group because he wanted to put something together that brought entertainment to people and fun to those involved.

“I love entertaining people and just knowing that they’re having a good time because of us,” Smith said. “All the members of the band are friends. We get along really well and just enjoy playing.”

While this is a part-time job for the members of the band, the group takes its craft seriously and truly enjoys entertaining the masses. Head to BigBleuBand.com to see where the group will perform next.

SOMERS POINT BREWING COMPANY

Six friends turn love of beer and business into hometown brewery

SoMERS poinT — In December 2017, when six friends bought the old Somers Point Ice Company building, it was with hopes of turning it into a local brewery.

The dream would take another two years before it was fulfilled, but in April 2019, their vision came to life.

Childhood friends Ed Siegel and John DiNofrio grew up together in Linwood and graduated from Mainland Regional High School in 1985.

They loved what it meant to be a local — growing up and going to a beach, the friendly feel of a small town. They both always thought that Somers Point would make a good spot for a brewery and eventually decided to make that dream a reality. Siegel had worked at the old Somers Point Ice Company when he was in high school, and thought that spot would work well and offer sentimental value.

“But we knew we couldn’t create this alone, so I went to work and asked if anyone would want to join this new business venture,” DiNofrio said.

Friends and co-workers from the William J. Hughes Federal Aviation Administration tech center — Kevin Szagala, Deepak Chauhan, Mike Prata and Bob Biedrzycki — stepped up to join the fun.

“Having six of us works great because the two brewers concentrate on their art, but then us four come in and we bring the business side to the table,” said Chauhan, who grew up in nearby Galloway Township and attended Stockton University.

Starting a brewery was a great fit for all six of these men, for different reasons. Siegal and DiNofrio would

vacation together in Vermont, where they would visit the nearby breweries and try the local brews, and end up talking about starting their own.

Chauhan always had the itch to take an idea and turn it into a full business, while Szagala was a home brewer who was interested in taking his skills to the next level.

Prata and Biedrzycki liked the business model their friends were proposing and jumped on board to join in the fun.

This “hometown brewery” focuses is more on being a local, crafty spot than massproducing beers.

Somers Point Brewing Company only caters to restaurants and bars in the local area. Josie Kelly’s Public House has their own private label beer, made specifically for them, called Josie Kelly’s - Irish Red.

The friends want their brewery to be a welcoming experience. Customers who walk in can expect to be greeted by workers, a reminder that this is a hometown place.

“Customer service and being personable comes before making a sale. We ask our staff to engage and introduce themselves,” Chauhan said.

Since the building was the old ice house, the indoor area has an industrial theme with wall art. The open floor plan allows customers to get a glance at all the brewing equipment and where the magic happens. All the brewing is done in-house so if you happen to visit on the brewing days, customers can actually smell the aroma of a freshly brewed batch of beer.

The beers on tap behind the tasting bar are constantly changing based on what’s new, or the closest holiday or season. The two brews that never change are Flake News, a New England IPA, and Big Nose - Blonde Ale. These are the brewery’s top sellers and are always available no matter the season.

Big Nose - Blonde Ale is described as a smooth, refreshing, light-bodied ale with light floral and fruity notes from late-addition Amarillo hops. Flake News has a creamy mouthfeel and hazy appearance.

About seven or eight beers are also a part of their Landmark Series, where each beer name is geared toward the local community. There’s Beesley’s Point, Patcong-Pale Ale, Dunes til Dawn, Tony Martzen, Scull Bay, 7th Street Saison and Big Nose - Blonde Ale.

Stop in this month to taste their October specials, the Tony Martzen Oktoberfest and the Ubiquitous Autumn Pumpkin Ale.

“We want people to know that we’re here! We get so many people that still come in after three years and go, ‘wow, I never knew you were here,’” DiNofrio said.

CHIDO BURRITO

Serving fresh food and good vibes to the area

noRTHfiELd — Since opening in 2010, Chido Burrito has become a local favorite spot.

T. Gallagher and Steve Marshall founded this restaurant together and opened it in the old Stewart's building on Tilton Road. Chido quickly became a hot spot for all of Atlantic County.

The owners decided to start Chido because at the time, they felt there were no fast-casual restaurants in the area and few Mexican food options. Their goal was to serve high-quality, great-tasting food in a fun, friendly environment — a goal they still have now.

Managing partner James Taylor now oversees day-today operations and works closely with owner Marshall.

Marshall and Taylor grew up around here and have been friends for years. Taylor grew up right in Somers Point and graduated from Mainland Regional High School. After working in restaurants his whole life, Chido seemed like the perfect spot for him.

“I got a business degree from the University of Delaware, but when I graduated I found that I still wanted to be in the restaurant industry. I was very lucky to get the opportunity to join such an amazing local restaurant,” Taylor said. “This line of work is like nothing else. It can be hectic, demanding and difficult especially during the past few years with labor shortages, food shortages, pandemic restrictions and inflation. But it's also super fun and fulfilling. You never know what's going to happen on a given day.”

Two Chido specialties are the fish tacos and chicken bowls. This spot serves Mexican-style food for lunch and dinner to the many locals and regulars who come in each day.

Taylor said his favorite part about running Chido is the environment.

“There’s just a feeling when you come in here. It’s a happy and cool environment,” Taylor said. “It’s a fast and casual restaurant, but the vibe in here is great.”

While this Mexican restaurant may seem similar to chain restaurants such as Moes and Chipotle, Taylor is confident they stand above the competition.

“Our locality gives us an edge over them. We are so entrenched in the community and the locals see that. We see some of the same people in here every day,” Taylor said.

The spot is located along the bustling Tilton Road business district. During the summer shore traffic provides a steady stream of potential diners, while the restaurant’s central location makes it a favorite for locals in several communities. Taylor says that their proximity to Stockton University also gives them a lot of college students coming in daily.

Chido prides themselves on the freshness of their food and the fun energy that the restaurant encompasses.

Every morning all the food is made fresh and in-house. As a small business, that is hard to manage, but Chido pulls it off very well. None of the food served is ever bought frozen.

"What I wish more people knew about us was the freshness of our food," Taylor said.

General manager Rosie Weikel says that the happy energy in the restaurant comes from those who work there.

“Those who make the food are the heart of the restaurant and they are also just so fun to be around,” Weikel said. “The customers can feel that happy and fun energy.”

Making Linwood a safer place to learn

Police officers added to lower schools following successful program at Mainland

Linwood — Amid the harsh reality that school shootings are happening far too often in this country, city officials have expanded their use of police officers to beyond just the high school.

Just five years ago, the Linwood Police Department initiated a program, the first in the county, to use a Class III officer to add security in Mainland Regional High School. Now, this September it added two Class III officers, one for Belhaven Middle School and one for Seaview Elementary School.

Linwood Mayor Darren Matik said the program has been a big success. Adding officers to the lower schools had been considered from the start, but recent events made it even more critical to expand.

“Unfortunately in light of recent events we thought it was important to try and ensure the safety of our students,” Matik said. “We were waiting to see how the officer worked out in Mainland and we really wanted to have in-depth discussions with the school board and parents of the younger grades first.”

Class III officers are designated for schools. The officers must be retired law enforcement in good standing. These officers won’t be used to supplement patrol squads or solve staffing issues. They are solely for use in making schools safer.

Since 1970, 2,067 school shootings have been recorded in the United States — with one-fifth of those shootings occurring in the last two years. New Jersey has been the site of 12 known school shootings just this year, according to worldpopulationreview.com.

While Atlantic County has not been the scene of a school shooting, officials say they are being proactive.

Adams is stationed in Seaview Elementary and is a retired lieutenant from Atlantic City. Bryan is in Belhaven Middle School and was a former police officer in Somers Point.

The officers have been trained how to respond to a variety of incidents, including an active shooter or a bomb threat; just about anything that could potentially disrupt school and threaten the safety of students or faculty. As retired officers, both men already have extensive

enforcement training, but for their new roles, they were given additional instruction, Cunningham said.

“As we continue to increase officer presence and analyze best practices to maximize school safety, we collectively agreed the time was right to initiate the Class III program for the Linwood Public School District,” Police Chief Steven Cunningham said. George Adams and Daniel Bryan were hired and started working in the younger level schools on Sept. 29.
law
Belford Rivera, a class lll police officer stationed at Mainland Regional High School, in Linwood, greets Brent Rivera during lunch period. Left: Belford Rivera patrols the halls of Mainland Regional High School.

Because the officers will be in schools with students, they also underwent training on rules and regulations within the school, and mental health awareness.

Training, in fact, will be a near constant for the officers, who have met school leaders, faculty and toured their buildings as part of their orientation.

Police and school officials declined to provide details on the various police responses to threats, saying that information could be used by someone with bad intentions.

These newly appointed Class III officers are paid $30 per hour. The funding for these positions will be covered by the police department and the school district. The city also applied for a grant as an added measure, to lessen the financial burden to the taxpayers, although they don’t anticipate any tax increase on the municipal side to fund this program. This program will move forward without the grant for the time being.

One important task of the Class III officers will be to create relationships and trust with the students.

The officers will work every day during regular school hours and the district may request their presence for additional after school activities like sporting events or plays. Each officer will carry a gun, but not be dressed in a full police uniform. They will wear a vest under a polo police shirt, khakis and their police belt.

These officers will be visible and accessible every day in each school, all while making sure the children are comfortable with their presence and that all safety protocols are being followed.

Belford Rivera is the Class III officer at Mainland Regional High School. He said that in addition to being there to protect students and serve as a deterrent, he’s become a friend, confidant and problem solver for students he encounters. The hope is that these new officers will do the same in the younger schools.

Rivera was a police officer in Hamilton Township before undertaking his role in the high school. He says his favorite part about being at Mainland every day is interacting with the students.

“I have a great relationship with the students, I really see them as my sons and daughters. I treat them with respect and they give it right back to me,” Rivera said.

In the mornings when the students trickle in through the main doors, Rivera stands there, greets the students, throws around high fives or fist bumps. Throughout the rest of the day, he can be seen walking around the hallways. He often chats with students about sports or anything else when they have off periods.

Parents of Mainland students have shown their appreciation for Rivera and the Class III officer program.

“The parents love the fact that I’m here. They will come up to me and thank me for being here for their kids,” Rivera said. “Kids will introduce me to their parents at the end of school and I’ll go out and greet them during drop off.”

When it comes to the two newest schools to join the program, the hope is the officers will build these strong relationships with the students and the kids can use them as a mentor and someone they look to for safety.

“As part of our commitment to safety and security, we are excited about the addition of a class III officer on each of our campuses. A stationed officer in our buildings not only enhances the safety of our schools but also creates a pathway of support,” Brian Pruitt

superintendent of Linwood public schools said.

Ultimately, these officers are being placed in the Linwood schools for the students. They are not trying to get the kids in trouble or to make the kids afraid of them. Instead, they are there protect them.

Rivera said that the students at Mainland are so comfortable with him now that a lot of the times he will know ahead of time if a problem is going to occur because of them. He was able to create a bond with these students so they feel like they can go to him if a fight is planned or anything else the students know about.

Northfield Mayor Erland Chau, and the city’s Planning Board have proposed a new LED sign to go up outside City Hall. The sign has been approved by council and is currently in the works with city engineers.

There has been discussion regarding turning the existing Walgrens on New Road into an Aldis supermarket. This proposal has not been approved by council and many residents near this site are opposed.

The Press of Atlantic City is moving into a new headquarters in the Cornerstone Commerce Center at 1201 New Road in Linwood. The Press editorial and advertising departments are expected to complete the transition to the new space this fall, after spending ten months working remotely.

Northfield has started a business association group for the first time in over 10 years. Check out page 15 for the full story.

noRTHfiELd – This past June, Councilwoman Carolyn Bucci began putting together an Economic Development Commission Group to help promote the city's businesses as well as help develop new businesses.

There had not been an active business association group here for more than 10 years. But since the pandemic, New Jersey's businesses have suffered with one in five closing. Bucci thought it was an important time to bring this group back so it could help provide guidance, analysis and assist new businesses with opening and staying open.

An active committee needs seven members to function, and currently there is a core group of six people. The group is off to a strong start, but they are still looking for more businesses to join. Any interested local Northfield business owner can join.

The members include chairman Michael Grossman of Kensington Furniture, Rachel Guevara of Lift and Glitz Training Studio, Josiah Bunting of Bunting Family Pharmacy, Scott Spencer of Batteries Plus and Deidre Kreuz of Century 21 Alliance. The group meets once a month, with a

goal of making their meetings quarterly once fully up and running.

“I thought it was an important area to focus on and I saw that no committee had reported on it, so I picked it up,” Bucci said.

Bucci said a strong business base, as well as bringing in new businesses will help keep taxes down for residents.

The EDC's goal is to help businesses grow, make connections and adapt to challenges.

When the first meeting took place in June, only three people showed up. Now, the group has doubled in size and other businesses are expressing interest in joining.

For more information or to join the group, contact cbucci@cityofnorthfield. org or mlg@kensingtonfurniture.com.

UNWIND

BOOK OF THE MONTH: DUNES TIL DEAD

-

author Summary: Down the shore, it’s America’s Bicentennial Summer. But not everyone is celebrating with sparklers and bottle rockets. The bodies of two young women have turned up in the dunes at the southern tip of tourist-packed Long Beach Island. Mickey Cleary, Surf City’s Police Chief for the last 10 years, has just embarked on a new challenge when she finds herself pulled back to LBI’s white sand beaches to help hunt down a killer. As her investigation progresses, she uncovers a horrific truth.

Mickey is about to learn that some times the devil you know can be much worse than the one you don’t.

Taking place in 1976, Waters creates a shocking thriller and mystery story that is perfect for the month of October.

Waters said the inspiration to write this book was that he wanted to set it at a place he knew and loved, the shore. He loves this book because it allows him to

go back to the years when he would head to the beach in the summer.

Nothing like a fall cocktail to sip on while enjoying a spooky thriller novel you won’t want to put down.

ingredients:

2 oz Liberty Rum

4 oz apple cider

.5oz cinnamon simple syrup

.5 oz lemon

Dash of bitters

The title, “Dunes til Dead,” comes from the old Dunes nightclub that was located in Somers Point. Waters said the night club’s saying was “Dunes til Dawn” because they were the only club open until 6 a.m. He thought using Dunes in the title was a clever way to bring back mem ories and he hoped that a lot of people would remember that place and relate. d

directions: Fill your glass with ice, build the drink, stir to combine and garnish with a lemon or dried apple wedge.
