Body Found in Woods Identified as Missing 19-Year-Old COLONIAL HEIGHTS

COLONIAL HEIGHTS- Colonial Heights police have opened a death investigation after identifying the body discovered on December 21st in the woods along the 1300 block of Yacht Basin Drive. The Virginia State Police have identified that body as 19-year-old Marcus James Johnson of Chesterfield, who was reported missing back in November.

Johnson was last seen by family members on November 16th and reported missing to Chesterfield County Police on November 27th.

Police are considering this an active homicide investigation, and they believe that the crime occurred in another location before Johnson was transported to the woods along Yacht Basin Drive.

Colonial Heights Police ask that anyone with information or who may have had contact with Johnson contact detectives at 804-520-9329 or at velasquezc@colonialheightsva.gov. Johnson was last seen wearing blue jeans, a white puffer jacket, a red cap, and toon squad sneakers.

But the end of the Insider does not mean the end of LNN’s local news coverage and content. In fact, it is only the beginning of more focus on our weekly newscast, live events, and special publications. This includes providing more in-depth commentary, features, and

Hit and Run on Crater Road Leaves One Person Dead PRINCE GEORGE STAFF REPORT LNNUSA.com

PRINCE GEORGE- In the evening of Tuesday, January 10th, a vehicle travelling along South Crater Road struck a pedestrian and then drove away from the scene.

The incident occurred in the 21000 block, likely between 10pm and 11pm.

Police say that the pedestrian, a man identified as 59-year-old Tiff Pescatello of Richmond, was walking northbound along the road when an unknown vehicle struck him from behind.

His body was discovered by a passing motorist around 7:30am on Wednesday, January 11th, and he was pronounced deceased at the scene.

PGPD say that they believe the make of the vehicle is a Ford and they are actively working to identify additional details such as the model and color, but they did confirm that the vehicle’s passenger side headlight was broken on impact and that it likely suffered additional front end damage.

Prince George County Police received information that an older model (ear-

ly 1990’s), extended cab, Ford pickup truck, red and white in color, was observed parked in a field off of the 8000 block of Halifax Road in Dinwiddie County on Tuesday morning, January 10th. The truck was described as having passenger side front-end damage and damage to the passenger side windshield.

Another Hopewell Shooting Death Highlights Daunting Task Ahead for City Leaders HOPEWELL

HOPEWELL— Last week the Hopewell community gathered in a protest march from Harry E. James Elementary School to Carter G. Woodson Middle School shouting, “Enough is enough, the violence has to end!”

During a special meeting later that week on January 5th, Delegate Carrie Coyner and representatives from a group violence intervention program known as Real Life presented information to the city council.

After the information was presented, Councilor Dominic Holloway made a motion to pass the first step of Operation Ceasefire by greenlighting Real Life, a program in which criminals and at-risk individuals are provided assistance with transitioning away from a life of crime and violence.

They also face harsh consequences should they still choose that lifestyle.

However, the legality of Holloway’s motion was questioned by the city attorney and other councilors because, according to the

rules governing city council, the motion was ill-advised for a special city council meeting, and should therefore be made during a regular meeting.

After some discussion, council voted to temporarily suspend those rules to allow for the motion to adopt Real Life, a motion supported by city council members unanimously.

One Hopewell resident spoke up during the meeting to say that she woke up with a bullet hole in her house, frightening her 10-year-old son so badly that he was afraid to go home.

While the city can upgrade its technological surveillance system and increase patrols throughout the city, and while council can adopt programs like Real Life and Operation Ceasefire, stopping all crime is a daunting task, as evidenced by yet another murder in Hopewell that occurred on Monday, January 9th. A 17-year-old Prince George High School student was shot and killed in a trailer park along Oaklawn Boulevard– about a block away from the protest march route.

In connection to that shooting death, two 18-year-olds were taken into custody and reportedly confessed to the killing: Clifford Lamont Hill, Jr., of Richmond (charged with 2nd degree murder) and Xavion J. King of Petersburg (charged with accessory to murder).

Hopewell Police Chief A.J. Starke commented on how sad it was to have already

lost 8-year-old P’Aris Moore and now to have just lost another youth to gun violence.

“We’re starting to get more tips. The phones are starting to ring. The citizens are tired of the violence,” said Starke. “And they’re ready to get involved.”

PRINCE GEORGE- The Prince George Board of Supervisors met for the first time in 2023 on Tuesday night, January 10th. As part of their organization for the new year, the board members voted on a new Chairman and Vice-Chairman. Supervisor Donald

Hunter was selected to serve as Chair and Supervisor TJ Webb as Vice-Chair.

Hunter has served twice as Chairman of the Board in the past, while Webb’s selection places him in his first leadership position on the Board since he was first elected. Both Supervisors have served the county on the Board for eight years, both for District 2.

Petersburg to Celebrate 50th Anniversary of MLK Holiday PETERSBURG STAFF REPORT LNNUSA.com

PETERSBURG- On Sunday, January 15th, the City of Petersburg will host a special program to celebrate fifty years since the city designated Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.’s birthday as a city holiday. According to the City of Petersburg, it was the first locality to establish Dr. Martin Luther King’s birthday as an official holiday, ten years prior to Dr. King’s birthday being made a national holiday.

At the August 7, 1973, Petersburg City Council meeting, the then-city attorney presented the ordinance he had drawn up as requested by resolution to establish a

holiday for city employees on January 15th of each year honoring Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. The celebration Sunday will begin at 3:00pm, with doors opening at 2:30pm, at the Petersburg Public Library. There is a small fee for entry in the form of a canned good that will be collected as part of the Day

of Giving.

Petersburg government offices will be closed on Monday, January 16th in observance of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.’s birthday. Offices will reopen on Tuesday, January 17th at normal business hours. Dogwood Trace Golf Course will be open on Monday during regular hours, and Petersburg Area

Transit (PAT) Bus service (including Para-Transit) and Greyhound will operate on regular schedules. Central Virginia Waste Management Authority (CVWMA) collections will operate on regular schedules.

6 Ways to Build Lasting Healthy Habits FAMILY FEATURES

Starting on a path toward healthy habits is often easier than maintaining them long term. This year, you can avoid a major pitfall of healthy resolutions and build healthy habits that stick by working small, positive steps into your daily life.

In fact, healthy habits are the first suggested treatment strategy for people whose blood pressure and cholesterol levels are creeping higher than normal, according to an American Heart Association scientific statement.

“The current guidelines for managing high blood pressure and cholesterol recognize that otherwise healthy individuals with mildly or moderately elevated levels of these cardiovascular risk factors should actively attempt to reduce these risks, and increasing physical activity is a great place to start,” said Bethany Barone Gibbs, Ph.D., chair of the statement writing group and chair of the department of epidemiology and biostatistics at West Virginia University School of Public Health.

shows positive emotions make habits stick, so set your intentions on something you enjoy. Another misconception is big results require big changes, which may lead to overly ambitious habits.

However, the simpler the routine is, the more likely it is to become habit.

Work with Your “Brain Loops” Your brain creates “loops” for habits made up of three things: a cue, a routine and a reward. Each time the loop is repeated, it becomes more routine and may become automatic. Knowing this, you can design cues for developing new, healthy habits, such as setting walking shoes by the bed to start a walking habit. The routine is putting on the shoes and walking around the block, and the reward is the pleasant sensations and brighter mood from a morning stroll.

Create Cues That Work for You Most successful health habits begin with a cue. The cue

can be external in your environment or internal in terms of your mindset. The more consistent the cue, the more likely it is to trigger the habit. Hacking your brain’s reminder system can help you remember your cue. Some examples of visual cues are placing a sticky note where you’ll see it often, keeping a water bottle on your desk or refrigerating fresh veggies at eye level.

Build a Routine That Supports Your Goals Positive and consistent habits are important to achieve your personal goals. Small habits done consistently can add up to big results. To create a new healthy habit, think through the steps that could lead to your desired outcome.

Ask yourself whether you want to do it, if it’s easy and if it’s high impact. It’s important to choose habits that make a difference and move you closer to your goals.

For example, if one of your goals is improving your heart health, a meaningful habit

might be to move more. Increasing physical activity can help lower blood pressure and cholesterol along with many other health benefits, Gibbs said.

“Every little bit of activity is better than none,” she said.

“Even small initial increases of 5-10 minutes a day can yield health benefits.”

Use Rewards to Make Habits Stick Start by choosing a habit you enjoy that’s rewarding by itself. If you’re more of a dancer than runner, increase your physical activity with an upbeat dance class. You might also look for a more enjoyable version of a new habit, such as getting more fruits and veggies by sipping on a delicious smoothie.

Understand Resets are Part of the Process New habits are experiments. If they don’t stick, you haven’t failed. Instead, you’ve learned what doesn’t work, which is useful. Get curious and ask yourself which part of the habit didn’t work for you. Maybe the cue was ineffective. Maybe the steps of the routine were too ambitious and you need to split them into smaller, easier steps. If you realize you don’t enjoy the habit, stop doing it and try something else.

RICHMOND- At noon on Wednesday, January 11th, the House of Delegates and Virginia Senate convened in Richmond for the General Assembly’s 2023 session. As an odd-numbered year, the 2023 session will be a short session, lasting 30 days. The first day of session primarily centered around organizing for a new session and a new year, but both House and Senate

committees began their work early the following morning.

The 2023 session is scheduled to end on February 25th, meaning legislators will be moving quickly to consider and vote on bills.

As this year’s General Assembly session continues, LNN will continue to provide coverage of key moments and highlight important bills through the new weekly Good Day VA! show on Youtube and LNNUSA.com.

Governor Youngkin Delivers State of the Commonwealth Address, Calls for Virginia to Grow Faster as Recession Looms STAFF REPORT LNNUSA.com

RICHMOND- As the Virginia General Assembly convened on Capitol Hill Wednesday, Governor Glenn Youngkin made his way to the House of Delegates chamber to deliver the annual State of the Commonwealth address to a joint session of the General Assembly.

The Governor began the hour-long address by assuring legislators and guests, “The state of the Commonwealth is substantially better than it was last year.” He followed that summary with a push for representatives to get more done for Virginians and to

do so even faster, saying that he and the other elected leaders were sent to Richmond by the people to “deliver on a vision”. In addition to highlighting key areas of progress in the Commonwealth that ranged from education to healthcare, tax cuts to business growth, Governor Youngkin in his speech shone a spotlight on Petersburg and the Partnership for Petersburg program that his administration and Petersburg leaders have been jointly working on for much of 2022.

The Governor’s address was not just about the positives, however; he also emphasized the need to

make Virginia a better place to live by reducing taxes and increasing job opportunities. According to Governor Youngkin, Virginia has experienced nine consecutive years of net population out migration- more people leaving Virginia than moving in. In contrast, states that the Commonwealth often competes with for business locations and relocations are experiencing net in-migration, states such as North and South Carolina, Tennessee, Florida, Georgia, and Texas. In order to make Virginia a more attractive state to move to or remain in, Governor Youngkin called for both business and indi-

vidual tax cuts and a 20% increase in the standard tax deduction, moves that are included in his 2023 budget amendments.

The Governor emphasized that, with the forward momentum gained in 2022, 2023 is “no time to set the cruise control” with Virginia’s growth “more important than ever” as the country continues to struggle with inflation. With economists and experts issuing Americans warnings of the economic outlook for 2023, recession and continued impacts of inflation remain top of mind for Virginians and their representatives in Richmond.

On Dec. 21, 2022, a male entered Jewelry Kings at 254 South Park Mall. The suspect asked to try on a $5,000 watch and the employee assisted him. Once the watch was on the suspect’s wrist, he backed away from the counter and left the store on foot without paying. The suspect is described as a Black

male in his mid-30s, about 6 feet 1 inch tall and wearing a gray hoodie with a Marvel logo and gray sweatpants.

LEADING IN SKILLS TRAINING SENATOR FRANK RUFF

15TH SENATE DISTRICT Southern Virginians should be proud of our role in leading work skills training.

The Growth Virginia region that spans from the North Carolina line north to Buckingham and across Virginia from Brunswick to Henry is leading the rest of Virginia with a program named Great Opportunities in Technology and Engineering Careers, for short GOTEC. When Growth Virginia started, it was designed to promote the different strengths of each region and let business leaders help guide growth. This

was to replace the thinking that all knowledge starts in Richmond. Each region had numerous meetings to determine how to best focus on their region of the state and how best to attract the right industries that fit best for their region considering the assets available. Additionally, each region was to plan how best to attract and prepare for those new job creators. Our region, Region 3, focused on how best to develop a workforce to meet the training demands of existing openings as well. Our citizens often have good work ethics, but their skills need to be upgraded for today’s opportunities.

This effort led to Dr. Julie Brown, at the Institute for Advanced Learning and Research in Danville, devel-

oping the GOTEC concept.

As the plan was developed, there was concern that, for too many years, our schools were focused on sending students to college. The result was not perfect. Some returned to opportunities in the area, but more had to leave the region to find jobs that matched their education. Meanwhile, students who had no interest in college were sent to classes to receive some skills training, but few were trained well enough to take high skilled jobs. Way too many young people saw little opportunity and, therefore, did not focus on their personal future until the end of their time in high school.

With GOTEC, starting in middle school, students are now being exposed to

skills currently needed in our communities. Often, this has begun in a mobile unit that visits those schools that don’t yet have the equipment to teach students such things as 3-D printing, welding, precision machining, IT, and robotics among other skills. The goal is to expose students to what opportunities exist in today’s job market. If they are interested, they can develop their skills to such a degree that they can be certified for many jobs in our area as they graduate from high school.

services, business skills, and law enforcement. This training can lead to over fifty career pathways that are needed in the county. I commend Superintendent Paul Nichols and the Mecklenburg School Board for their commitment. Other school systems around us have the same commitment.

Across Virginia

Other parts of the state are learning of the success this program is having in our region. They are very interested in following our lead. The

greatest obstacle currently is attracting the staff needed with the skills and with the ability to teach those skills to young people.

The statewide Virginia Growth and Opportunity Board, GO VA, (on which I serve) recently voted to help expand GOTEC to other regions of the state. To expand, schools are required to follow the blueprint that Dr. Brown has developed.

In turn, the Institute for Advanced Learning and Research will train the instructors needed to fill those positions. In some cases, it will be to train

individuals with the needed skills on how to manage in a classroom setting. In other cases, it will train current instructors on the most up to date equipment that is available. Either way, I see a brighter future for the young people of Virginia.

Long term, I hope that not only current students throughout the region will be well prepared for a successful future, but all citizens will have access to these new training tools using our schools in the evening to learn skills to better the life for their families.

Statewide Workforce Training Programs

I am honored that Governor Youngkin has asked me to lead the effort to modernize and streamline the many programs dealing with workforce throughout the various branches of state government. This is something I am passionate about.

Stagflation to Terrorize the Economy in 2023 MIKE GLEASON

Gold and silver markets got off to a strong start in the first couple days of trading this year before running into some selling pressure on Thursday – only to bounce back again on Friday morning.

A superficially strong jobs report has raised expectations for further rate hikes by the Federal Reserve and boosted the U.S. dollar on foreign exchange markets.

Metals futures traders reflexively responded by hitting the sell button yesterday only to turn around and buy today.

As of this Friday morning recording, gold remains positive for the week -- up 2.2% since the final close of 2022 to trade at $1,873 per

ounce. Silver, on the other hand, shows a slight weekly loss of 0.3% but is also advancing nicely here today to bring spot prices to $24.11 an ounce. Platinum is up 0.9% for the week now to come in at $1,103.

And finally, palladium is essentially unchanged for the week to trade at $1,848 per ounce.

Investors often look at the first few trading days of a New Year for clues as to market trends that may develop for the rest of the year.

Financial News Report: U.S. stocks fell sharply on Thursday as fresh evidence of a tight labor market deepened fears the Federal Reserve will keep interest rates elevated for longer than expected.

Financial News Reporter: No real indication of what the Fed is thinking of for the next meeting on February 1st, but in December, they saw an economy that was still running too hot in terms of the labor market and inflation that was still

unacceptably high. They did face a concern, however, that with most of the credit impulse that they had put into place yet to hit the economy, they had two risks. One, tighten too little and let inflation and expectations go up too much.

Tighten too much and risk recession.

The major economic themes of 2022 were rising inflation and rising interest rates. They combined to create miserable conditions for investors in conventional financial markets.

As for inflation, it is widely forecast to come down from its double-digit highs of 2022 – in large part because higher borrowing costs for consumers and businesses are expected to depress demand for goods and services.

Central bankers are expected to raise rates by a sizeddown quarter point at their next meeting in February.

Some observers see the Fed needing to hike further given a low official unemployment rate and still elevated inflation rate.

But Wall Street and Washington, D.C. have signaled that they can’t take much more interest rate pain.

Stagflation could be a major theme for 2023. In such an environment, both stock and bond markets will likely continue to struggle.

Inherently unpredictable markets have a tendency to defy popular expectations and produce outcomes that leave investors who haven’t covered their bases vulnerable.

Central banks around the world acquired gold bullion bars at a record pace last year. Official buying of physical gold should provide something of a floor underneath prices in 2023.

Whether gold gains popularity among ordinary investors this year as a safe haven remains to be seen.

The public, unfortunately, may not become interested in a big way until after gold launches into a record-setting run. It’s then that a possible mania phase could ensue.

Directions

Ingredients • 1 can (15 ounces) fat-free, refried beans • 1 cup salsa • 2 cups plain Greek yogurt • 1 tablespoon cumin • 1 tablespoon smoked paprika • 1 teaspoon salt, divided • 1/4 teaspoon cayenne (optional)

• 2 avocados • 1/2 cup cilantro, minced, divided • 1 teaspoon garlic powder • 1 lime, juice only • 1/2 cup scallions, minced • 2 Roma tomatoes, seeded and diced • 1/4 cup black olives, sliced • tortilla chips

1. In small bowl, mix refried beans and salsa. Spread mixture in thin layer on bottom of large platter.

2. In separate small bowl, whisk yogurt, cumin, smoked paprika, 1/2 teaspoon salt and cayenne, if desired. Spread mixture on top of bean layer.

3. In third bowl, mash avocados with

1/4 cup cilantro, garlic powder, lime juice and remaining salt. Spread guacamole on top of yogurt layer.

4. Sprinkle dip with minced scallions, diced tomatoes, black olives and remaining cilantro. Serve with tortilla chips.

She was also preceded in death by her beloved husband, Mack Slusser; grandson, Earl Thomas Newton, Jr.; brothers, Earl, JR, Ben, and Lee Johnson; sister, Virginia Hayes; and son-in-law, Earl Thomas Newton, Sr. She is survived by her children, Donna Newton, Michael Slusser (Laura), Wanda Mullens, Sharon Slusser (Jerry), and Debby Grissom (Jamie); grandchildren, Wes Mullens, Matthew Mullens, Russell Mullens, Jared Slusser (Mary), Evan Slusser (Sydney), Molly Myers (Will), Cory Timperio, Mallory Grissom (Jonathan), and Morgan Grissom; great-grandchildren, Lily Timperio, Carson Jarrett, June Slusser, and Ethan Slusser; sisters, Joyce Pettey and Barbara Lackey (John); and brother, Gene Johnson.

In her free time, she enjoyed bowling and playing cards. She was also a member of Faith Baptist Church in Prince George. She is loved and will be dearly missed.

A funeral service will be held 11:00 a.m., on Tuesday, January 17, 2023, at the Hopewell Chapel of J.T. Morriss & Son Funeral Home.

Brynleigh was the most precious baby girl ever and an absolute joy to be able to meet and hold. She is greatly loved and will be immensely missed. On Saturday, January 7, 2023, Wanda Teresa Harrison Blake, age 63, passed away peacefully at Johnston Willis Hospital, Richmond, VA. She was born on March 16, 1959, in Petersburg, VA. Wanda graduated as valedictorian of Prince George High School, Prince George, VA, in June 1977. She matriculated from Howard University, DC, Magna Cum Laude, in 1981, with a Bachelor of Business Administration Degree (B.B.A.) focused on accounting. Early in her career, Wanda earned a Certified Public Accountant (CPA) designation for the state of Pennsylvania, which she used to build an illustrious accounting career serving in several senior executive positions such as Controller for Swedish Match, North America, and most recently, Director for Fahrenheit Consulting Group.

Wanda had many accomplishments and honors, including being the 2014 Recipient of Style Weekly’s Executive Women in Business Award. And even after retirement, Wanda remained busy by starting her independent consulting firm in October 2018, Wanda T. Blake Consulting, LLC. She was a member of Cawson Street Church of Christ, in Hopewell, VA. Wanda was co-organizer of the “Lads to Leaders” program and the co-instructor for “Pearls” a teen girl’s program.

She was preceded in death by her father, Olander Lee Harrison; mother, Cora Jackson Harrison; a brother, Lander Odell Harrison; and sister, Barbara Harrison Patrick.

She is survived by her loving and devoted husband of 39 years, Raymond J. Blake, Sr.; two wonderful sons, Raymond Blake, Jr. of Jersey City, NJ., and Jeffrey Blake of Chesterfield, VA; one brother-in-law, Edward Patrick of Prince George, VA; one aunt, Bettie Harrison of Dinwiddie VA; devoted family and friends, Abigail Price-Williams of Miami, FL., Chanie Jordan of Mechanicsville VA., Cindy Patrick of Richmond, VA., and a host of loving nieces, nephews, cousins, extended family, and friends.

He lit up every room he walked into and there was never a dull moment with him.

Arthur F. Hills, 90, of Ipswich, MA, passed away on Thursday, January 5, 2023. He was preceded in death by his wife of 45 years, Elna E. Foster; daughter, Lynne A. Sarafin; brother, Tom Hills; sister, Margaret Corsaro; and parents, George and Mary Hills. Arthur was born on January 23, 1932 and graduated from Ipswich High School. He served honorably in the United States Army and worked for the United Shoe Machinery Corporation. Upon his retirement, Arthur was a school bus driver. He was also a firefighter with the Ipswich Volunteer Fire Department. Arthur is survived by his son, John C. Thibodeau; grandson, Justin A. Sarafin; granddaughter, Amanda L. Sarafin; great grandchildren, Porter Sarafin-Messelaar and Greyson Sarafin-Messelaar; nephew, George Corsaro; and daughter-in-law, Zoe Thibodeau. Duck was employed with Allied Chemical in Chesterfield, retiring after 43 years. He enjoyed staying active and living life to the fullest. He was kind to others and had an unmatched sense of humor. Duck enjoyed sports and rooting for the Washington Redskins, UVA, and Hopewell High School basketball and football teams. He loved to dance especially shag dancing. He will forever be remembered as a compassionate person who loved his family.

Sandra Frazier Hare, 79, of Claremont, VA, gained her wings on January 4, 2023. Born in Hopewell, she was the daughter of the late, Jake and Mary Frazier. She was a loving wife and mother. She retired from Allied Chemical after many years of service. She loved living on the river, working in the yard, and enjoyed going to thrift stores. In addition to her parents, Sandra was preceded in death by her brother, Dick Frazier (Pam); and her sister, Marlene Smith (Smitty). On January 3, 2023, Anthony Barbini departed this life, one week following his 31st birthday.

Anthony was born in Chippenham Hospital, in Richmond, Virginia, but resided in Hopewell his entire life. He graduated from Hopewell High School in 2010, and was employed many places before landing the job he felt was his “perfect match,” as a Revenue Recovery Clerk at UPS in Chesterfield. He loved all kinds of music with Avenged Seven-Fold and Ghost being among his favorites. He was an avid gamer from an early age.

Anthony had many friends. Those who made it into his inner circle knew him to be loyal and always willing to do anything they needed. He attended Wesley United Methodist Church, in Hopewell, from a young age and was baptized there as a teen.

Anthony is survived by his father, Scott Barbini; and his mother, Bonnie Barbini, with whom he resided. He is also survived by two brothers, Brandon (Lindsey) and Michael; uncles, Julian Barbini (Denise) and Marshall Andrews (Christine); nephew, Kenneth; and nieces, Lilly and Sydney. Additionally, he had many cousins who loved him dearly. Anthony had two lifelong friends from the 1st grade of school until current, Nicholas Stone and Tyler Cebula, who will sorely miss him.

Rosa Edith Schumaker, 81, of Amelia County, Virginia, went to be with her Lord on Wednesday, January 11, 2023.

Born on January 13, 1941, in Covington, Virginia, she was the daughter of the late Dolphus Morris and Gussie Wilson Wright. She is also preceded in death by her loving husband, Jimmy H. Schumaker, Sr. Rosa worked for over 30 years with Boddie & Noel Enterprise (Hardee’s), working various roles throughout her employment.

She loved to serve and interact with the public. Rosa was a nurturing and loving mother and wife. She felt most at home in a caregiver role to her late husband, Jimmy Schumaker, and late companion and friend, Robert Turner. She had many friends both new and lifelong childhood friends. She is survived by her son, Jimmy H. Schumaker, Jr. and wife, Cathy of Sutherland, VA; daughter, Tracy Thacker and husband, Ian, of Amelia Courthouse, VA; five grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

Cora Lee Lucas, 88, of Chester, Virginia, passed away on Sunday, January 8, 2023.

Born July 21, 1934, she was the daughter of the late Cooper Blunt and Thelma Dolby Taylor. In addition to her parents, she was also preceded in death by her siblings, Helen Cromer, Billy Taylor, and Lavader Horne; and her devoted former husband, William Gene Lucas.

Cora retired after 32 years from Verizon, formerly known as C&P, where she started out operating the switchboard. Once things were updated, she transitioned into the customer service department. She was an avid doll and other antiques collector and enjoyed being outdoors in the sun while gardening.

She is survived by her daughter, Cynthia Lucas Eanes and husband, William “Skip”; grandchildren, Kristin Michelle Oxenham and husband, Trevor, and Ashley Eanes Jones and husband, Kris; great-granddaughter, Coraline Jones; and other extended family members.

Judge Herbert Cogbill Gill Jr.

Judge Herbert Cogbill Gill, Jr., 79, of Chesterfield County, Virginia, passed away on Friday, January 6, 2023. In the middle of WWII on August 8, 1943, while his Father was stationed in the Army overseas, Judge Gill was born to Olive Stewart Gill and Herbert C. Gill, Sr., who have both since passed from this Earth.

Judge Gill was raised in the villages of Ettrick and Matoaca and was mentored by the best parents in the best of times. He was directly raised by the most dedicated, hardworking, and loving parents, but indirectly raised by the other six Gill siblings and their spouses, as well as nine Stewart families. His most cherished memories were Thanksgiving at the rented American Legion Hall in Ettrick, and Christmas at the home of Aunt Rachel Gill Dance. Specifically, each of the Gill brothers played a part in structuring his education and career. Judge Gill was fortunate in receiving the best education by the most dedicated career teacher in Ettrick/Matoaca Elementary Schools, Petersburg City Public Schools, Hampden-Sydney College, and TC Williams School of Law at the University of Richmond. Between college and law school, he served two years with the U.S. Department of Defense. Upon graduation from law school, he paired with his friend, mentor, and partner, Oliver D. Rudy. Together they practiced law from 1971 to 1987 when Judge Gill was appointed to the 12th Judicial Circuit Court Bench succeeding the Honorable Ernest P. Gates. Judge Gill married his high school sweetheart, Judith Blick Gill, and had two daughters, Sherry Gill Wright (Brian), and Rachel Gill Young (Robert); four grandchildren, Wade Gill, Julia Wright, Alexander Young, and Rylan Young. Judge Gill leaves behind his treasured relationship with his brother, Craig Stewart Gill, and his extended family. Judge Gill enjoyed golf, dog racing, and his extended family. He was a member of legal and civic organizations along with his church affiliations at Ettrick, Belmont, and Woodlake United Methodist Churches. His life was good with bumps along the way. He knew that God will remedy the Earth’s challenges and was ready for the next chapter. A memorial service will be held at 3:00 p.m. on Friday, January 20, 2023, at the Colonial Heights Chapel of E. Ms. Lorraine Otie White Cooke of 102 S. 16th Avenue, Hopewell, VA, passed away December 31, 2022.

She was born to the late Harvey Douglas White and Emma Lou Wooden White on July 27, 1946, in Suffolk, VA. She was raised in Disputanta, VA, where she was educated in their school system. She attended Rose of Sharon Apostolic Church of Waverly, VA, where she was baptized in Jesus name at an early age. She was a member of the New Apostolic Deliverance Center, Hopewell, VA, Pastor Isaac Holmes and later attended the Word of Life Center in Hopewell.

Lorraine was married to the late Calvin Edward “Speedy” Cooke, who was a Vietnam War Veteran. To their union was born one daughter, Ann Denise Cooke Morris.

She was preceded in death by her sisters, Darlene White and Barbara Smithwick; brothers, Barry White, James White, Kevin White, and Wilbert White; sister-in-law, Marilyn White, and her brother-in-law, James Williams.

Mr. Jones retired from Brown and Williamson Tobacco Company after many years of service. He then became a carpenter for his son’s siding business. He was especially known for being the jack of all trades. Mr. Jones was also a member of Poole Christian Church in Church Road.

He is survived by his loving family; his wife, Doris Jones; children, Gene Jones and wife, Tracy, Timmy Jones, and Donna Thomas and husband, Bruce; grandchildren, Pamela Thomas, Dustin Jones, and Jesse McKee; sister, Jeanette Aldridge; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Frank David Hotz, 91, of Chester passed away on Friday, January 6, 2023, fifteen days before his 92nd birthday. He is survived by his wife, Jacquelyn Ann Hotz; son, David Blane Hotz (Ann); two daughters, Kathy Louise Bennett (Dennis), Selina Wynn Nichols (Manuel). He adored his grandchildren, Eric, Steven, Keri, Kayln, Jason, and Adam. His great-grandchildren were a bonus of love, in addition to his beloved sister, Betty Michalek.

Frank is preceded in death by his wife of fifty-five years, Evelyn Louise Hotz; two sons, Ricky (Jerry) and Adrian; and siblings, Rudolph, Charles, Catherine, Joseph, and Rosemary.

He honorably served his county in the United States Navy, and later went on to work at the Stone Container company for over 30 years. Frank was a dedicated and lifetime member of Saint Ann Catholic Church, Chesterfield Tractor Club, and was a member of American Legion Post #284 in Colonial Heights. Yet, what defined Frank Hotz was his love and dedication to his family and his gardening. His passion and attention to detail when caring for his crops provided his family and many members of his community with food to feed their loved ones.

A funeral mass will take place at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, January 12, 2023 in St. Ann Catholic Church, 17111 Jefferson Davis Highway, Colonial Heights, Virginia 23834.

Henry Johnson, Jr.

October 25, 1936 - January 9, 2023 Mr. Henry Johnson, Jr., 86, passed away peacefully at Hunter Holmes McGuire Hospital, Richmond, VA, on Monday, January 9, 2023, following a few health complications. Henry was affectionately known to family and friends as “Daddy, Grandpa, PaPa, Junie, Deanie, Uncle Junie and Uncle Henry”.

He was the third child of four children, born in Chester, Virginia, to the late Henry Johnson, Sr., and Mamie Robinson Johnson. Henry received his education in the Chesterfield County Public Schools, attending Carver High School in Chester, Virginia. After high school Henry joined the United States Army serving several duties stations. His most mentioned was Germany. While in Germany, he learned to speak a little German and was proud of it.

He was a faithful member of First Baptist Church Centralia, where served on the ministries, The Combined Usher Ministry, FBCC Mass Choir, and FBCC Male Chorus.

Henry was well-known for his painting skills with an eye for detail. He was a self-taught pianist. He enjoyed playing in a band with his cousins and singing lead, they would trave outside of the area, often mistaken for the Temptations. Henry also loved to dance, play in horseshoe tournaments (which he often won), shoot pool, play spades, and he especially for being a sharp dressed man. Henry loved to have an enjoyable time with family and friends, whether it was a family gathering or just sitting around talking as long as there was good food and music he was there.

He was preceded in death by the mother of his children, Blanch Oxendine Johnson; and his sisters, Ruby Nell Johnson Turner, and Alice Clark (Pat).

Henry is survived by two daughters, Phenoris Redd and Miranda Wilkerson (devoted Anthony Jr.); two granddaughters, Qwashawnda Banks (devoted Robert Jr.) and Qwayawnda Wilkerson; one grandson, Anthony Wilkerson III, one brother, Robert Johnson (Arlene); one devoted niece, Germaine Johnson; four nephews, Derwin Clark, Donald Johnson, Michael Johnson, and George Turner III; two great-granddogs, LaLa Banks and Lola Wilkerson; and a host of cousins, other relatives and friends.

Matthew Thomas Harris

September 8, 1988 - January 2, 2023 Matthew Thomas Harris (Matt) was born on September 8, 1988, in Petersburg, Virginia to Jesse Thomas Harris and Robin Perdue. He grew up in Colonial Heights, Virginia and graduated from Colonial Heights High School in 2007, eventually moving to Chester, Virginia.

Matt married his wife, Jessica Harris, on March 14, 2020, and they have two beautiful children, Charlotte Ann Harris and Emma Lynn Harris. He was an exceptional father to his two daughters and loved his wife and family with all of his heart. An additional member of their family is Beric, their four-legged best friend whom his girls lovingly call, “Bubby”.

Throughout his adolescence and into adulthood, Matt was involved in many sports such as golf, baseball, basketball, softball, and volleyball, continuing his love for them by cheering on Duke, UVA, and the Boston Red Sox. Matt was the kind of person that made everyone’s life better through his relationships with them. He would help anyone whenever he could, often without having to be asked.

He began working at A1 Door Company in November 2021 as the Commercial Division’s Product Specialist and quickly became a friend to everyone he encountered. He worked on many large accounts for the company such as Philip Morris and Nabisco and was one of the only employees to have a perfect 5-star rating in all 8 core value categories. He had such a strong impact on the company that they have named their conference room after him: The Matthew T. Harris Conference Room, and his portrait will be hung for everyone to see and remember him. This will be their constant reminder to be more like Matt. The dictionary defines superlative as: of the highest kind, quality, or order, surpassing all else, or others. Supreme. We define it as Matthew Harris. As a father, husband, son, brother, friend, co-worker, and employee he was of the highest kind, quality, and order. Supreme.

Matt is survived by his wife and two daughters, Jessi, Charlotte, and Emma Harris; his father, Jesse Thomas Harris; his mother, Robin Perdue Gittman and her husband, Jay Gittman; his sister and her husband, Lauren and Mike Newlin; their children, Will and Madilyn Grace; his grandfather, James Ray Perdue; and so many other family and friends that love him and will miss him tremendously.

His infectious smile and personality will be missed by everyone that knew him, and this world is a better place having had Matt in it, even though it was for such a short time.

October 6, 1927 - December 7, 2022 The family of Mrs. Irene Eldridge Wilson sadly announces her passing on December 7, 2022 at the age of 95, in New York, New York. Irene was born on October 6, 1927 to Ms. Lucille Eldridge in Petersburg, Virginia. She was an only child. Irene worked in the health care/hospitals for over 40 years while in New York as an administrative assistant.

Although Irene rarely visited Petersburg after moving to New York, we remember her kindness, closeness, generosity, and her love to all of the family when she did visit. A very fond memory of her is that as children, she provided a great deal of financial support to our parents to help make Christmas much brighter, merrier, and blessed for us all.

Irene was preceded in death by her husband; her mother and father; uncles, Arthur Eldridge, Sr. and John Eldridge; aunts, Cora Lee Eldridge and Isabelle Eldridge; and devoted cousin, LaVerne Constance Eldridge. Larry T. “Poppi” Parker, Sr.

June 24, 1955 - January 1, 2023 Larry Tyrone Parker, Sr. of Chester, VA, gained his wings on January 1, 2023, at his home, surrounded by his family. Larry T. Parker Sr., affectionately known as “Poppi,” was born June 24, 1955, to Walter Parker, Sr. and Ethel Lee Parker in Emporia, VA. Larry was the eldest of four sons.

He graduated from Greensville County High School and enlisted in the United States Air Force. While stationed in the Philippines, he met the love of his life, Linda, and they remained married for 45 years. Together they raised two children and remained active in the lives of their five grandchildren. Larry retired from FCI Petersburg as a Firearms Instructor in 2010.

Larry was predeceased by his father, Walter Parker, Sr., and mother, Ethel Parker, as well as his mother-in-law, Rosario Balilo, who he cared for in her last days.

Larry leaves behind to cherish his memory devoted wife, Linda Parker; his children, daughter, Kameko Parker-Preston (Major), son, Larry Parker, Jr. (Nichelle) and daughter, Trina Tennessee-Young.

He will be forever cherished and remembered by his five grandchildren, Syniyah Parker, Major Preston, Jr., Maxximus Preston, MaKenzie Preston, and Phoenix Parker. Each of them would say that they were his favorite…because he told them all they were every time he saw them. Last but not least, he leaves his extremely devoted fur companions, Coco, Boom and Barksdale. He was genuinely devoted and engaged in his family’s lives and never missed the opportunity to share a life lesson, whether solicited or not.

His memory will continue through his brothers, Ronald Parker, Andre Parker Sr., and Walter Parker, Jr.; nieces, Mia Parker and Keondra Rogers; nephews, Brandon Robinson and Andre Parker II.; along with a host of great-nieces and nephews, cousins, extended family and friends.

He was not perfect, but he was imperfectly perfect to those closest to him. His family will miss his big laugh, love of Sci-Fi, seeing him read a book inch thick, and talking trash, usually in defense of his beloved Philadelphia Eagles.

Life is not measured in how many breaths we take, but in the moments that take our breath away, and all that knew Larry, knew this is how he lived his life. He definitely did it his way, and he will truly be missed.

After marrying Isiah Thomas they were blessed with two sons, Albert A. Thomas and Izell Thomas. Katherine was preceded in death by her husband, Isiah and son, Albert A. Thomas.

Katherine leaves many family members and friends to cherish her memories: two siblings, Willie Evans (Katie) and Pecolia Dunson; a son, Izell Thomas (Terresa); daughter-in-law, Lonnie B. Thomas (late Albert Thomas); grandchildren, Izell Thomas III, Pandora Y. Thomas, Gregory Allen (Linda), Lafayette Thomas (Kelly), Felicia Thomas, Sylita Thomas, Al Thomas, Danielle Jackson, Deandra Jackson and Devarius Valentine. Katherine was also blessed to leave to cherish her memory a host of great grandchildren and great-great grandchildren; a devoted godson, Thomas Coleman and his daughter, Asheil Coleman.

Katherine received her GED and attended John Tyler Community College. She went on to work for the Hopewell Public School System for over two decades.

Katherine loved watching sports all day; but her favorite pastime was being on her cellphone, commenting and chatting with all of her friends on Facebook and most of all her dog, Rosie.

Virginia E. Bolden-Ruffin

July 1, 1965 - January 4, 2023 Virginia Elizabeth Bolden-Ruffin was received into the heavenly arms of our Savior during the late night of January 4, 2023, at her home surrounded by family. “Jenny”, as she was affectionately known as, was born on July 1, 1965, to her loving parents, the late Melvin and Marshall Cheeks Bolden.

Virginia graduated from Sussex Central High School in 1984. She was a faithful member of First Baptist Church, Wakefield, VA and remained active until her health failed. She served on the Usher’s Board and Pastor Aid Committee. She was employed with Fort Lee Lodging, Fort Lee, VA for 25 years and later became employed as a caregiver with Horizon Home Healthcare and dedicated over 15 years in the medical field.

Jenny was a true, die-heart Philadelphia Eagles fan and you could always expect a homemade gift from her.

She loved crafting, crocheting and doing hands-on projects for all the holidays for family and friends. She also volunteered at the Jessica A. Moore Community Center for about 4 years.

Along with her parents, Virginia was preceded in death by her uncles, Kenny Cheeks and Leroy Cheeks; aunt, Roberta Cheeks; grandparents, Lewis Bailey and Rosa Belle Cheeks; and her foster grandparents, Lester and Ruth Diggs.

She leaves to cherish her memories, her husband, Kelvin Ruffin; two daughters, Sharada Bolden and Latonia Costello (Lawrence); grandchildren, Ke’Asia Bolden , Jourden Jones, Justin Bolden, Jaiden Bolden and Harper Costello; two sisters, Marion Davis (Dave) and Tomeka Anderson (Gregory); brother, Michael Cheeks; nieces, LaNesha Johnson, Charmaine Johnson, Dadarika Davis (Antoine) and Akeela Anderson; nephews, Jacques Bolden (Tiara), Jamar Davis, Jacobie Smith, and Gregory Anderson, Jr.; stepmother, Georginia Bolden; special friends, Kenny Kelly, Loretta Sims Parham and Shaun Neal; her patient, Mr. Eugene McClean; and a host of cousins, other relatives and friends.

Throughout her entire ordeal, Virginia trusted God and never wavered in her faith. Known for her feistiness, always being on time, and sharp wit, it was fitting that Virginia would go out fighting. In her latter days, Jenny spoke of trusting God’s will and made it clear that she was tired and ready to go “home”. She often called for her “ANGELS” and on Wednesday night, the angels answered her call as she was surrounded at home by family.

Jenny left a lasting impression on everyone she met. She will be eternally remembered for her style and grace, bravery, her passion for having a good time and her willingness to helping any and everyone in need.

Services will be held 1:00 P.M., Saturday, January 14, 2023 at First Baptist Church, 217 S. County Drive, Wakefield, VA, the Rev. Jerry B. Parham, M.Div, Pastor, eulogist. The interment to follow at Waverly Cemetery.

Mr. Anthony J. “Creeper” Griffin

September 5, 1977 - January 5, 2023 Anthony J. Griffin, known in the two-wheel world as “Creeper” departed this life suddenly on Thursday January 5, 2023.

He was preceded in death by his loving mother, Mrs. Betty Jean Griffin of Dinwiddie, VA, Mother-in-Law -Emma Jean Branch of Richmond, VA. Paternal grandmother; Mrs. Mattie Griffin of Petersburg, VA, Maternal grandparents; Mr. & Mrs. William Whitmore, of Prince George, VA, Uncle Ernest Griffin, of Dinwiddie VA, and Godmother Iola Mallory, Dinwiddie, VA. At an early age Anthony received Christ and was baptized at Little Zion Baptist Church, the same church he later married the love of his life. As a youth, Anthony participated in The Boys Scouts of America Troop #948, in which he learned numerous life skills that helped shape his “survival of the fit mentality “that he applied throughout life. Anthony was a 1995 graduate of Dinwiddie High School. Anthony was a dedicated employee of Performance Food Group, where he often went to work without complaining, or sometimes not feeling at his best.

Anthony enjoyed cooking on the grill and entertaining his family. He never missed an opportunity to plan a family cookout or gathering for friends. He enjoyed spending time with family and riding his motorcycle, as an independent rider. He was a former member of HOTT Motorcycle Club of Richmond, VA, as well as the Petersburg Chapter of C.O.T.T. Family was important to him and he was sure to let anyone know how much he loved and cared about his family.

He leaves to cherish his memories; loving and devoted wife of eight years, Mrs. Sabrina Branch Griffin of Richmond, VA; father, Wilbert Griffin, and loving daughter Jasmine Griffin of Henrico, VA.; three bonus daughters, Shareka Quallis (Andrew), of Richmond, VA Jasmine Kerr (Adam) Chesterfield, VA, and Re’ Jae Holland, Henrico, VA; twelve grandchildren, which he loved and adored.
