ACID BREAKDOWN Exploring AHAs, BHAs, and PHAs in skincare by Kara McLucas Mark

Hydrating acids, skin-clearing acids, exfoliating acids, acid peels – so many products and procedures make use of these magical chemical compounds to provide the best results. But what are they? What is the difference? Which one is best for sensitive skin? Aging skin? Acne-prone skin? The information online ranges from overwhelming to underwhelming. Here you will find enough information to speak confidently on acids as well as make the best decisions for your clients!

skin Acid Breakdown

AHAs The most widely talked about acid group are the AHAs (alpha-hydroxy acids). Alpha hydroxy acids are known as “wounding agents” or fruit acids. They work by exfoliating the stratum corneum which then activates hyaluronic acid and the syntheses of glycosaminoglycans as well as collagen to improve elasticity and hydration. Alpha hydroxy acids are used to treat photodamage, hyperpigmentation, eczema, acne, actinic keratosis, and fine lines and wrinkles. There are six key alpha hydroxy acids: glycolic, lactic, malic, tartaric, citric, and pyruvic. Glycolic acid is the most widely used AHA, however, it is considered the most aggressive but the most penetrative due to its small molecular size. It is made from sugarcane but can be synthesized in a lab. It works by breaking apart the desmosome bond of the hardened keratinocytes to slough away dead skin, which then increases its water-binding ability to provide more moisture to the skin. Lactic acid is a gentler exfoliator made from sour milk but is also found in muscle tissue. It has a larger molecular structure, so it works on just the surface level of the epidermis. It is used as an exfoliant but also as a preservative and moisturizer. Levels of 5 to 12 percent are known to cause an improvement in hyperpigmentation, fine lines and wrinkles, as well as improved moisture levels within the skin. Malic acid is the third smallest molecular structure within the alpha hy-

droxy acid family. It can be quite irritating and difficult to work with, so it is mainly used in conjunction with other acids. Tartaric, citric, and pyruvic acids also fall into the category of “difficult to work with” but with a larger molecular size. Two alpha-hydroxy acids are gaining in popularity and are much easier to work with as well as being much gentler to the skin: mandelic and azelaic acid. Mandelic acid is a gentle exfoliating acid that is made from bitter almonds. It is a large form molecule that allows for a much more even and slow penetration rate. It is known for its purifying and brightening effects and is used per or post-laser peeling or surgery. It is best to mention that this acid is gentle enough for skin with rosacea, that is sensitized, or has erythema. Azelaic acid is also a gentler acid that comes from sunflowers, wheat, rye, or barley. It reduces inflammatory lesions, minimizes redness, has an antimicrobial element, as well as the ability to calm popular or pustular breakouts. Azelaic acid can also brighten macules left behind from acne or inflammation.

BHAs The next classification of acids is BHAs (beta hydroxy acids). These also refine texture by reducing epidermal thickness through surface exfoliation. The most commonly known BHA is salicylic acid. Salicylic acid is made from willow bark but has some components found in aspirin. It is lipid-soluble so

it can penetrate deeper into the pore to reduce follicular blockage and exfoliates cellular build-up (think blackheads). Salicylic acid has antimicrobial and antiseptic properties which make it great for acne! It is also safer to use on darker skin types for hyperpigmentation issues than the more aggressive solutions.

PHAs The last grouping of acids is PHAs (polyhydroxy acids). These are being hailed as the “new generation of AHAs”. The three most common are gluconolactone, galactose, and lactobionic. These acids exfoliate similar to alpha-hydroxy acids but with antioxidant properties to stop free radicals. Their molecular size is larger which means the penetrative depth is surface level as well as minimal irritation. They also have humectant and moisturizing properties due to their water-binding properties. Another honorable mention about PHAs is that they are shown to boost the benefits of other treatments: retinoids, skin bleaching, laser procedures, and microdermabrasion. As with any treatment, be sure to check on allergies or contraindications for the type of acid you are using or suggesting. Be sure to do a patch test 24 hours before the client’s treatment and always have an acid neutralizer on hand. Hopefully, you consider yourself more comfortable with the types of acids used for facial treatments and can recommend with confidence!

Spider Veins

What are they and how do you treat them? by Kara McLucas Mark 14

July2021

LNEonline.com

skin Spider Veins

Telangiectasia (tuh-lang-jee-uhk-tei-zhuh) is a condition that affects men and women alike. It also goes by the more common name of “spider veins”. So just what are these spindly little freeways that can be a cosmetic nightmare? Spider veins are widened blood vessels or capillaries that form a threadlike pattern under the skin, typically clustered in what looks like “spider webs”.

THE CAUSE OF SPIDER VEINS Spider veins are caused by the failure of a tiny muscle restricting the size of an arteriole, which causes vasodilation of the blood vessel making them more visible. Being more prone to spider veins are equal parts genetics and environmental factors. Sixty percent of inherited spider veins come from the maternal side of the gene pool. However, there are quite a few environmental stressors that can cause spider veins to appear. For example, working in extreme heat can cause capillaries to be stressed from over circulation weakening the muscles responsible for constriction. Sitting or standing for prolonged periods can also cause spider veins to develop due to increased blood pressure in the lower extremities.

HOW DO WE TREAT THEM? The location and severity of the spider veins typically dictate which kind of modality is used. Spider veins can be found in a myriad of places, the most delicate being on the cheeks, chin, and nose. When faced with these troublesome blemishes, the most common treatment is using IPL to close the capillaries. This device can be used all over the body but is great for the more delicate areas of the body. Another modality would be an electrocautery device. It is not as scary as it sounds. This device typically has a needle-like apparatus that uses heat to close the dilated vessel. Another more advanced treatment is called sclerotherapy. Sclerotherapy is an injectable solution that is used by a trained physician to collapse more troublesome veins, such as varicose veins found on the lower extremities. These are a more severe type of vein condition and are typically characterized

by a swollen appearance with a green-blue hue. Varicose veins should not be treated in a spa setting as they are typically an indicator of circulatory problems or a more serious underlying condition. It has been suggested that the best time to treat spider veins is during the winter months. Minimizing sun exposure or hot temperatures can help a treatment be more successful. There is also the possibility of bruising depending on the type of treatment used. Compression garments used after treatment or just as prevention can help improve circulatory performance,

Spider veins can be found in a myriad of places, the most delicate being on the cheeks, chin, and nose. as can lessening the time of prolonged sitting and standing. If you are stuck behind a desk or standing on your feet all day, simple steps such as walking a little every hour, elevating legs, and rotating the ankles to help. If you notice a creeping red capillary on you or your client, the biggest thing is to not to agitate it. No amount of massage or warmth will get those veins to “work themselves out”. They are treatable with more advanced modalities and care. If you are uncomfortable with treating spider veins, you can always make referrals to a dermatologist or plastic surgeon.

SPA OF THE MONTH

INSPIRED BY WATER “Rooted in the connection to the natural world around us, our spa design draws from the inherent wisdom and curative properties of the Sonoran Desert along with the four elements - Earth, Water, Air, and Fire,” says Spa Director Stevie White. Inspired by water, the Spa at CIVANA embraces this source of life and its therapeutic properties by recapturing its every flow through the Aqua Therapy Circuit — a hydrotherapy therapy thermal circuit of hot and cold pools — a cool waterfall shower, and KLAFS SANARIUM® - the only 5 seasons sauna in the continental U.S. All guests are encouraged to begin their spa day with this rejuvenating experience before indulging in a calming and restorative treatment. In addition to this water series, the Spa offers more than 23 treatment rooms located on two levels, men’s and women’s locker lounges, and an outdoor 25-meter heated spa saltwater pool for lap swimming, lounging, bistro-style seating, and four private ca-

banas. “Our co-ed relaxation lounge is a grounding sanctuary and the perfect place to rest before and after your treatment, offering healthy snacks and teas, oversized lounge pods, and a sweeping view of Black Mountain,” says White.

THE SIGNATURE TREATMENT The Spa’s most popular treatment is the CIVANA Renew (90 min, $260). “This treatment is designed for your inner body, your cellular body, where all the magic happens,” says Spa Director White. The treatment includes wellness rituals and techniques that encourage change within the tissues, increased lymphatic flow, circulation, and elimination while providing herbal nourishment to restore and renew the body. “This service begins with a full-body dry brushing with a brush to take home and use in your own self-care routine, followed by a full body massage using our Spa Technologies Drainage Oil, full of sage, cypress, juniper, and eucalyptus,” explains White. CIVANA Renew also features cupping and gua sha to stimulate circulation further and promote healing.

MARKETING A top 10 wellness result of USA Today and #3 in the U.S. for Travel and Leisure in 2020, CIVANA Wellness Resort & Spa is well known for the one-of-a-kind experience and unmatched hospitality it provides for its guests. “Most of the people who come here want a true spa getaway, as it is an integral part of the CIVANA experience. I do have to say, though, the people who have experienced CIVANA are our best marketing tool - the reviews, blogs, posts tell it all! It’s a special place,” says Stevie White.

Everything you need to create a functional and appealing website by Marconi Rodas

Every successful business has a beautiful and functional website. How can you achieve one? If you currently have one, then you know creating a website can be overwhelming. Focusing on key points then taking it one step at a time will feel less stressful. Here’s your guide to everything your spa website needs to make it simple.

24

July2021

LNEonline.com

spa Website Design 101

THE HOME PAGE This is the first place potential clients will land on when they type in your website’s URL. This is one of the most important parts of your website and will leave a lasting first impression. Here you can establish your specific brand and business. Having a quality photo of your work spa is a great option here to set the tone and invite them in. This also means making sure not to overwhelm visitors with 10 popups. I would keep it to one or two at the maximum.

NAVIGATION Having a Header Menu and Footer on each page of your website is so crucial. When building and designing your site, make it a point to keep the viewer in mind – always! They will want things visible and accessible, so a little hand holding is necessary. In your Header, or a drop-down menu, list and link other pages of your site for easy navigation. Great examples of this will be call to actions like Services or Shop. If someone is confused on navigating your through site, they will leave and you can lose that potential client. These options also work great in a Footer, and having this information in both will set you up for success.

THE TREATMENT MENU The heart of any spa is the treatment menu. Make sure to list all services neatly. If you provide different types of services, categorize them. This way, visitors know exactly where to go for what they are looking for. Make sure to list a brief description and duration of time and price to answer all of their potential questions.

THE CONTACT PAGE Having a point of contact for clients will save everyone time. This can be done successfully two different ways: having a whole page dedicated to it or having some quick information in the Footer.

Here, include a phone number to call and/or an email. Listing your address will also be extremely helpful to let clients know where to find you.

YOUR ONLINE SHOP Setting up a beautiful website often feels unfinished if you don’t include a Shop section, especially if you sell retail in-office. Anyone browsing can quickly and easily support your business by simply purchasing a cleanser. If you don’t currently have an eCommerce, I highly recommend looking into it.

BRAGGING RIGHTS Now, it’s time to brag! Why should someone come to you versus the next service provider? Create an About Page and be sure to highlight important information you’d like clients to know about your spa. Display headshots and a biography of each practitioner.

REMEMBER, IT’S ALL IN THE DETAILS As mentioned before, visitors will need hand holding and will be looking for key information. Posting your hours is so critical to let people know when they can reach out or come in for a service. I recommend keeping this in your Footer so it shows up on every page. Your website should be the gateway to everything having to do with your brand. Make sure to include links to any social media outlets so visitors can get a better look at what you’re doing. This is another great addition to your Footer. Through your website you can easily reinforce your brand by making sure to pay close attention to a few things. Make sure to match things with strong visuals - a memorable logo, color schemes, and even the fonts you use. Consistency is key here.

SHOWCASE YOUR SPACE Showcasing your space can be done tastefully with professional shots, touring the spaces clients will and want to see when they visit. These shots can include your luxurious waiting area, your beautifully mounted sign/logo, an Instagramable feature wall and your relaxing treatment room(s). Other great photos to incorporate are any before/ after images you are proud of. This gives you credibility and makes clients hopeful.

business Behind the Spa Door

How did Skincare by Amy Peterson come to life?

What are your most popular services?

I worked for a plastic surgeon and ran his skin division in Seattle for nine years. I built that side of his practice. During that time, I was approached by multiple companies to be a clinical educator. That was because they could track my consumables and wanted to know how I was so successful! That’s when my passion started for this technology. I firmly believed that I could distinguish myself from other practices because education was at the forefront of what I was doing. When I relocated to Miami, I waited until I found the perfect spot. I had done this before and was ready to do it my way. The patient experience had to be put first and I chose the technology that I most believe in. With this spa, I was building my dream.

Clear & Brilliant Rx, which my technique is great for the face. Emsculpt Neo is also very popular right now for the body, the results are very real. It brings together fat burning and muscle building to a great effect and the clients love that.

How do you define the concept of your spa? What makes your spa unique? The concept is simple. It is luxury meets warmth, education, and innovation. My customers feel empowered when they leave looking better than when they came in. And even more importantly, I think they leave with a firm understanding of their skin conditions and a plan to make a change for the better. I invest a tremendous amount of time with every single patient and care deeply about their outcomes.

28

What makes your services unique? I incorporate multiple modalities together. Very rarely will I do a simple, straightforward service that is just one technology. That’s not really what my clients come to me for.

How do you keep clients loyal and consistent? By really taking care of them. I depend on word of mouth, so I want to make sure that each person feels very special. If you can accomplish that in conjunction with great results from your treatments, you will always have clients coming back to you.

How many employees do you have and what are their specialties? I have an injector who is excellent, Anya who is a facial and body contouring expert, and Ana who is a facial sculpting specialist. I have three people who help with the front desk. They help me with lots of things.

What is your skincare philosophy?

How do you select the people who work with you?

I wholeheartedly believe in a preemptive approach to aging. I think people usually wait way too long to take care of their skin. My best outcomes are on people who take ownership of their skincare and make it a priority! But each person is different, so I think every skincare treatment and aftercare routine needs to be personalized for them. It helps to assess whether they are in “maintenance mode” or “corrective mode” and I treat them accordingly.

I try to take a closer look at where they have been vs. where they are going. I hire people I see potential in. I think I’m pretty good at spotting potential and that helps me find and hire some pretty great people.

July2021

LNEonline.com

What do you look forward to the most about going to work every day? Every day I look forward to working on patients and seeing their results! It’s

very satisfying and fun and I love meeting new people and seeing my regulars. I love making people happy and seeing them walk a little taller when they walk out the door than when they came in.

How do you maintain a worklife balance? My kids and my husband are hands down the most important thing to me, and when I’m not building my practice, I am spending time with them. That said, I believe there are different seasons of your life and, right now, this is the season for me to grow my new business. I’m okay with that. I've found a way to be very present in my life and I trust where my feet are planted.

What advice would you give to someone who aspires to run their own business? I would suggest you immerse yourself in everything and try to get as much education as you can. I believe that my immersion and education have taken me to a level where I have become an expert in my field. If you are an expert, the business will come. But you do have to go all in. I also think there is value in starting at a front desk position and working your way up seeing all the different sides of this business. I’ve always had a vision and seen where I want to be. Bet on yourself.

Esthetician Spotlight 38

July2021

LNEonline.com

With René de la Garza, Founder and Master Brow Artist at Brow Down Studio

before providing their clients with great brows. As a 5x Certified Brow Lamination Artist and Certified Educator- INVEST IN TRAINING! Investing in yourself is always worth it!

How do you obtain and maintain loyal clientele? What inspired you to become an esthetician? How did you know you wanted to do brows? After a failed attempt at a professional career in Opera performance, I pursued the business side of beauty working in management, education and business development for a few very well known global beauty brands. As the years passed, I quickly saw my career advancing toward administrative work in the beauty industry, which was becoming farther and farther from being hands on with clients, which made my heart truly happy. I knew that I wanted to specialize in brows, because I’ve always been fascinated by the transformative power of brows. At one point in my career, I was also a makeup artist, and while I was never that great- the brows were always ON POINT.

How did Brow Down Studios come to life? Brow Down Studio (named after Beyonce’s hit “Bow Down”) was created in 2016 as a niche brow studio dedicated to the art and craftsmanship of the Brow. I wanted to create a place where clients could discover their fullest brow potential, and learn how to properly care for and makeup their own brows everyday at home. No two brows are the same, which is why our services are not the same either. Each service is hyper personalized to our guests. I started Brow Down Studio myself with a single wax warmer and an eager

heart to serve, in a 250 square foot office in Downtown LA. Over the 5 years, Brow Down Studio has continually and steadily grown to currently having two locations and 8 employees.

What is your brow philosophy? My brow philosophy is simple- your brows should work for you by making you look younger, more lifted, more awake and accentuate your unique features.

What sets you apart from other brow artists? I believe that what sets me apart is my unique approach to the brow service which includes a very detailed brow consultation process that feels collaborative with my clients, my mapping technique that both assists me as the artist and gives my clients comfort knowing that they will have the best brows at the end of the service. I also created a signature massage called the crown chakra massage that hits all the pressure points on the temples, forehead and scalp.

You are known as the Brow Lamination King. Can you share your best tips for this technique? With Brow Lamination still being relatively new in the US, there is a major variance in the brow lamination service as a whole; there are service providers that are practicing on paying clients, and those that are investing in their education to learn proper techniques

I educate my clients on how to take the best care of their brows by telling them when to bring their brows back, and what to do in between sessions. Building trust and relationship are the keys to a loyal clientele- I see my relationships with my clients as life-long, not transactional. Follow-up is also essential in building a relationship. Sending thank you notes and appointment reminders will take you very far!

What do you believe is your secret to success? I believe that my resiliency and willingness to try new things is my secret to success. I am always willing to look at how I present myself and how my business is presented with a fresh eye everyday. I am constantly learning and listening to what my clients want, and build intuitively based on my learnings. Success to most is measured in many different metrics which are mostly quantitative, but to me success is measured by happiness and quality of life.

What business advice would you give to another brow artist just starting out? Take as many continuing education classes as possible. Seek a mentor who will take you under their wing and guide you and pay that mentor back for their guidance by mentoring somebody in the future. Realize that art is subjective and is often loved and hated by each unique observer, so dont ever compare yourself- what makes your work beautiful is if you love it and your client loves it!

Sins of Summer Repairing Summer damaged skin by Marconi Rodas Summer and the sun make for a beautiful time of year, but it can be like a backhanded compliment. Every moment you spend outdoors can potentially damage your skin. But the sun also provides your skin and body with the ability to produce Vitamin D, an essential part of the calcium absorption process. While it’s not possible or desirable to completely avoid sunlight, your clients may not have protected

Protection guide themselves as directed. Too much sun exposure can lead to numerous health and skin concerns, including skincare, immune health risks, and cosmetic changes to the skin. If your clients have visible signs of sun damage to the skin, you as the esthetician may be able to help alleviate the sins of summer with a range of treatments. Some of the most common ways estheticians reverse sun damage include chemical peels, LED light therapy, laser treatments, and building a solid foundation of home products. During warmer weather, we are prone to sweating a bit more. This sweat mixed with our oil, humidity, and skincare products can cause underlying congestion or breakouts. Flushing out these impurities with hydration and exfoliation will be essential. Providing your clients with a professional exfoliation experience, such as a chemical peel, in your facial treatments will be a game-changer. Incorporating gentle acids like lactic acid or a cocktail of acids, including kojic acid or glycolic acid, is a great choice. Exfoliation will encourage cell renewal, brighten your client’s complexion, and aid in flushing out those impurities. Extended duration of time in the sun or indulging in extra cocktails during the summer are major culprits to skin dehydration. We know dehydrat-

ed skin is when we lack moisture, aka water, and it can take on a leathery, dried appearance. Reclaiming your clients’ skin from desert-like texture and appearance will create an instant and much better environment for their skin to thrive. Typically, light exfoliation can rid your clients of cuticle build-up on the skin and theoretically enhance topical product penetration. This is where inoffice and home treatments come into play. There are tons of options, from toners to serums. Hyaluronic acid serums can improve hydration in the skin and prove to be truly successful in getting the skin back into balance. Of course, you can boost a serum that contains this holy grail ingredient with tons of modalities such as an ultrasound or a galvanic device for maximum penetration and product delivery. Drinking water and boosting their intake internally is excellent, but you can even elevate that by having them incorporate an essential fatty acid supplement. One of the most prominent conditions we see after summer, aside from dehydration, is inflammation. This includes but is not limited to redness, sensitivity, and heat in the skin. Of course, we know a broad-spectrum sunscreen is non-negotiable, but you would be surprised at how many of your

clients didn’t wear their SPF. Lack of sunscreen and exposure to the heat for long periods will wreak havoc on the skin. An easy and effective way to relieve skin stress is by introducing a series of LED light therapy treatments. Summer is known to bring on unwanted pigmentation, so you can surely expect that your clients will want that addressed as well. Giving clients an LED session or series can be another staple when treating hyperpigmentation. Overproduction of melanin is typically a response to inflammation. Incorporating anti-inflammatory practices like LED will make all the difference. Specifically, infrared LEDs are known for their ability to treat inflammation. Some great tyrosinase inhibitors include L-ascorbic acid, kojic acid, and azelaic acid. L-ascorbic acid can be used as lightening and brightening agents and provide antioxidant protection from UV rays. Azelaic acid is a gentle exfoliant best known for its anti-inflammatory properties. When it comes to the causes of skin damage and aging, sun exposure is one of the main culprits. If your clients spent a lot of time outdoors this summer, you might be wondering how you can repair their skin and prevent further sun damage. Summer is such a beautiful season filled with gorgeous weather, but with good times usually comes skincare sins that need correcting. With these tips, you and your clients can face the autumn season confidently.

Pollution-Proof Skin How to shield the skin from environmental damage by Aurora Solis

44

July2021

LNEonline.com

Protection guide

Smog, sun, and dirt wreak havoc on the skin. Most of the time, clients are unaware of the damaging particles absorbed by skin daily because they are tiny and microscopic. Though small, they can cause dry, dull, lifeless skin with continued exposure. By educating clients on pollution-proofing skin, they can enjoy immediate results while protecting their skin from long-term damage.

with the know-how of pollution-proofing skin.

WHAT IS AIR POLLUTION?

CLEAN AND EXFOLIATE

Pollution in the air comes from daily human activity and can include exhaust fumes, petroleum release, and even cigarette smoke. Areas with a large population density (think New York) have the most air pollution, often covered by a large cloud of smog. While your clients probably don't think about the air coming into contact with their skin, it's likely the reason they suffer from dryness or other skin conditions like acne and fine lines.

Because pollution penetrates deep, clients will need to clean their skin at least twice a day. For a deep cleans-

DIGITAL POLLUTION: IS THAT A THING? Besides air and sun, digital devices also affect the skin's health. If you have clients that work from home or heavily use computers or cell phones, their skin may be overexposed to blue light. Though this is not a pollutant, continued exposure can cause damage to the skin, draining it of moisture and damaging surface layers.

POLLUTION’S EFFECT ON SKIN Pollution is a cause for concern for the skin, causing free radical damage. This damage penetrates the deepest layers of the skin, forming deep wrinkles and causing clogged pores and breakouts. The free radicals exposed to skin strip away healthy oils that moisturize and create a dry, dull, and lifeless complexion.

HYDRATION IS KEY Your clients may already know this, but the things they ingest have an immense effect on the skin's appearance. Encourage your clients to increase their water intake to flush out toxins left behind by pollutants both in-spa and at home.

To breathe life back into your client’s skin, treat them in-spa and flood them with the knowhow of pollutionproofing skin. ing treatment that reverses pollutants in the skin, try cleansers with ginkgo Biloba leaf or malachite extract. These two powerful ingredients can penetrate deep and change the skin's appearance instantly. Exfoliation is critical to pollution proofing, sluffing off dead skin, and reducing inflammation. A great ingredient to look for is sea salt, as it's filled with zinc, manganese, and selenium. It exfoliates and replenishes moisture in the skin for a soft, plump glow.

ANTIOXIDANTS POLLUTION PROOFING To breathe life back into your client’s skin, treat them in-spa and flood them

Perhaps the best defense against pollution is antioxidants. They undo the damage and block free radicals from in-

teracting with the skin. Incorporating facials filled with antioxidants like Vitamin C, A, and E, clients will leave with a glowing complexion that's ready to face anything the air throws its way. Also, think about incorporating natural goodies into your spa skincare like kale, beets, and berries.

ACTIVATED CHARCOAL The holy grail of eliminating gunk is activated charcoal. It has the power to penetrate deep into pores and squeeze out the nasty stuff left behind by pollutants. You can use activated charcoal as a cleanser or face mask to remove the buildup of toxins, dirt, and debris from the skin.

SUNSCREEN Always apply sunscreen after treatments and encourage your clients to invest in one too. A good sunscreen has a high SPF (at least 30) and protection against UVA and UVB rays. Keep sunscreens with zinc oxide and titanium dioxide in your spa, which are natural sunscreens that do not get absorbed by the skin.

MOISTURIZE Because exposure to pollution depletes the skin of moisture, you'll need to add it back in with an intense moisturizer. One superstar ingredient is hyaluronic acid, which can capture hydration in the air to keep skin moisturized all day long. Apply intense moisturizer before your clients take off and suggest that they moisturize day and night to keep skin fresh and relaxed.

POLLUTION-PROOF TODAY FOR HEALTHIER SKIN TOMORROW Protecting the skin from harmful pollutants fights against free radical damage. Keeping your clients aware of top ingredients and helping them develop healthy habits, they'll have clean and moisturized skin protected against pollutants like air, sun, and electronic devices. Methylene Blue

Research shows potential new sunscreen is coral-safe and provides UVB/UVA protection

46

July2021

LNEonline.com

Protection guide

A recent study conducted by the University of Maryland and Mblue Labs is shining the light on the powers of one of the oldest synthetic substances in medicine, Methylene Blue. When tested for its ability to block harmful UVA and UVB rays, it excelled, absorbing the harmful rays and repairing damage to DNA. The study, published in Nature Scientific Reports, also focused on the alternative sunscreen ingredient's effect on coral reef, which is currently in severe condition throughout the world. The deterioration of coral reefs links to several factors, one of which is exposure to Oxybenzone-rich sunscreens. These sunscreens seep into water easily when beachgoers slather them on to avoid sunburn and exposure to UV rays. Unfortunately, 80% of today's sunscreen formulas incorporate Oxybenzone as a chemical UV-blocker, despite its effects on the world's marine ecosystems. While several countries have stepped up and banned the use of sunscreens with Oxybenzone, it's still a standard ingredient among several big names in the sunscreen industry. Dr. Kan Cao, Founder of Mblue Labs and Bluelene Skincare, discussed the collaborative study and its findings. She claims that Methylene Blue "…shows a broadspectrum absorption of both UVA and UVB rays, promotes DNA damage repair, combats reactive oxygen species (ROS) induced by UVA, and most importantly, poses no harm to coral reefs." The study looked at both old and young fibroblasts, comparing their protection and repair with Methylene Blue and Oxybenzone. It also tested Xenia, a soft coral species, when exposed to different doses of both Methylene Blue and Oxybenzone. Keeping the same species of coral reef in isolated tanks under the same light and temperature conditions, researchers observed significant differences in response to each chemical. When using Methylene Blue, the health of exposed coral reefs was not affected, even when researchers upped the dosage to a high molar concentration (1µm). Coral reef exposed to Oxybenzone responded with bleaching and death in less than a week.

While several countries have stepped up and banned the use of sunscreens with Oxybenzone, it's still a standard ingredient among several big names in the sunscreen industry.” In both young and old fibroblasts, exposure to Methylene Blue showed signs of proliferation and cell repair. In addition, Methylene Blue, when compared to Vitamin A and C, shows considerable antioxidant characteristics. Dr. Coa shared, "we found that the combination of Methylene Blue and Vitamin C could deliver amazing anti-aging effects, particularly in skin cells from older donors, suggesting a strong synergistic reaction between these two beneficial antioxidants." Their groundbreaking discoveries led them to patent their idea, applying for permission to start testing sunscreen prototypes. Additionally, their findings of the powerful combination of Methylene Blue and Vitamin C led to the development of their first skincare product, Blueline's Night +, which promises to deliver a fusion of Methylene and Vitamin C for optimal antiaging effects. The study, "Ultraviolet radiation protection potentials of Methylene Blue for human skin and coral reef health," was published on May 28, 2021, accessible to anyone who would like more information about the study and findings. The study was made possible with help from the Small Business Technology Transfer Grant (Grant: 1842745) and supported by the National Science Foundation (NSF).

organic & wellness Carpal Tunnel Syndrome

Carpal Tunnel Syndrome Using the Pain Relief Method to treat CTS in the Spa by John Schreiber

Harvard University’s Medical School defines carpal tunnel as the small area located in the wrist where the median nerve and other structures pass through. This delicate space, supported by bones and ligaments, is narrow and prone to irritation from common, repetitive grasping and gripping actions like driving, typing, and writing. The constant strain of simple daily activities can squeeze or compress the carpal tunnel. This often leads to symptoms such as numbness, tingling, pain as well as the diminished function of the wrist and fingers, specifically the middle, index fingers, and thumb.

organic & wellness Carpal Tunnel Syndrome

Women are the population most at risk for carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS). According to the National Institute of Health (NIH), women are three times more likely to experience CTS. Other at-risk groups include people who have diabetes or other metabolic conditions as well as people who are obese or women who are pregnant. Finally, CTS is prevalent in certain occupations such as workers on an assembly line, musicians, bread bakers, massage therapists and estheticians, data entry personnel, and people who use their hands to perform a specific action repeatedly. The standard approach varies depending on the severity of the condition. They include strategies such as wrist splints, ice therapy, stretches to more invasive treatments like surgery. At the Schreiber Pain Institute, we start all our client sessions with a detailed interview and intake process. With CTS, clients often experience symptoms in the fingers of one or both hands. Typically, we begin the CTS treatment with the client lying on their back. From this position, we can

easily work muscles on the front of the body. We concentrate on the chest muscles as well as the muscle around the collarbone and ribs. Although this is not the wrist, these muscles lead into and impact the upper extremity. Once they are relaxed, then we can focus on opening up the muscles of the arm and forearm. Next, we treat the hip area. This allows the body to move closer to its center of gravity. When we become better positioned in space, it relieves pressure on the structures on the front of the body as they no longer struggle with the weight of the body leaning forward. Finally, the neck is another key area involved in CTS. Clients who have a history of car accidents and/or neck injuries, especially when left unrehabilitated often show symptoms of CTS at a later date. Throughout the entire treatment, we communicate with the client to ensure that the pressure and techniques used are within their threshold of comfort. While some discomfort may occur, it is counterproductive to

continuously expose the body to painful touch. The body in its wisdom initiates a defense system called ‘muscle guarding’ to prevent any further injury and can stymie the treatment progress. PRM’s CTS success rate varies. The most important factor in determining client success is the length of time and severity of their CTS diagnosis. It also depends on how successful clients are at eliminating or drastically minimizing repetitive actions that perpetuate the injury cycle. In addition, clients who commit to daily stretches as well as incorporating ergonomically sound equipment and body positioning help to support their recovery. For example, when sitting at a desk, clients can get in the habit of having the wrist lower than the elbow, keeping the knees higher than the hips, and the shoulders and upper back touching the chair when they're sitting. When these small changes are put in place, the chances of successful recovery increase. The PRM approach to CTS is ideal for the spa setting. As previously noted, women are far more susceptible to CTS. Women are also the main demographic for spas. There is a high chance for many of these spa-goers to benefit from the Schreiber Pain Relief Method to support their CTS recovery as well as to prevent the development of CTS. Women who spend hours a day in an uncomfortable position or doing repetitive actions with their hands benefit from treatment that combines the Schreiber Pain Relief Method and the calming and friendly spa atmosphere.

image Self Care for Lash Artists

Having a long, successful career as a lash stylist requires taking care of your body every step of the way. That means listening to what your body tells you and investing in an ergonomic workstation that adjusts to your body’s needs. We’ve pulled together our top tips for supporting your body’s needs in the lash studio. TAKE CARE OF YOUR BODY WITH FLEXIBLE CLIENT SEATING As lash artists, we can spend up to three (or more!) hours in a chair when giving clients a full set of lashes. If possible, invest in a bed or recliner that will allow your legs to go fully underneath so that you can stretch out, avoid hunching, or even change seating/standing positions while working on a client. You won’t be at the top of your game if the bed your client lies on doesn’t let you adapt to your body’s needs as the hours slip by! PREVENT EYE STRAIN WITH PROFESSIONAL LIGHTING + MAGNIFICATION Just as people who spend hours on computer screens need to protect their eyes with blue light filter glasses, lash artists who spend the better part of their workdays performing intricate lash work with tiny lash extensions need to protect their eyes from strain! To this end, professional studio lighting is a must. Look for a lamp loaded with enough brightness settings to adjust to your needs, particularly as daylight hours wax and wane throughout the day. As a bonus, high-quality lighting will give even the most haphazard iPhone photos that extra salon-quality, professional oomph. Your clients will be much more likely to post pictures and tag you on social media if they can snap glowing, well-lit photos while still in the chair! In addition to lighting, consider purchasing magnifying glasses if you need them. Not only will it help you see your work on a larger scale, but

it’ll also prevent you from additional, unnecessary squinting and eye strain. PROMOTE HAND AND JOINT HEALTH WITH HAND EXERCISES Working with tweezers all day can lead to long-term difficulties in your hands, fingers, and wrists if you don’t take the time to properly stretch them out. Below are our top three stretches for lash artists:

1. THE PIANO / REVERSE PIANO • Touch the tip of each of your fingers and the pad of your thumb in both directions. • Then, stretch each finger out individually. 2. THE ENGAGEMENT PHOTOSHOOT • Extend your arm fully, and force your wrist down (like you’re flashing a ring). • Next, do the same with your hand in a fist.

about a minute every 2-3 hours when using tweezers. In addition to taking care of your hands and wrists, make sure to take steps to protect your neck and back. Check that your stool is the proper height relative to your bed, as prolonged strain on your neck can lead to serious spinal problems in the future (not to mention leaving you sore). When working on clients, you want to look out and over, rather than straight

down. Finally, try to avoid slouching while working, as it promotes bad posture and can reshape your spine after long periods of time. Altogether, these steps can help ensure your body stays happy and healthy for years of lashing to come!

Nothing puts a smile on your client's face like a great pair of balanced brows. And nothing can ruin their day faster than a pair of unbalanced and misshapen brows. If the second half of this intro made you sweat a little, then you’re not alone. Most technicians are terrified of doing brows and with good reason. There is a skill and technique required to create well-balanced, jaw-dropping brows that most of us never learned in school. Brow design is an advanced skill that requires advanced knowledge and technique to execute correctly. So, if you’re in camp “I’m afraid of brows”, fear not. It is a skill that anyone can learn, and it just takes time and patience to feel confident. There are two things that I never leave out when performing a brow service. They have been with me for years and have served me very well. First, setting proper expectations. Every first-time client gets the “Brows are Sisters Not Twins” speech. This is very important to creating a successful experience for both the technician and client. When expectations are not properly set, then it can lead to disappointment and hurt feelings later. This is true for most things in life. Who knew that brows and life were so connected? Most people don’t realize that brows are not and cannot be symmetrical with just waxing alone. Setting this expectation eases everyone’s mind and takes away the stress and pressure of having to be perfect. To help you explain to your clients, here are the exact words that I use: “Brows are Sisters, Not Twins”. We as humans are not symmetrical. No two sides of our body are the same. One foot is bigger than the other, one arm is longer than the other, and one brow bone is higher than the other. Brows will never be symmetrical, but we can make them appear more sisterly.”

After hearing this, a light bulb appears over the client’s head. They finally understand why after years of trying to do their own brows they were never able to get them to “match”. And they are now open to hearing what can truly be achieved. AND because you are honest and upfront with them, they trust you. That’s called building client loyalty. Secondly, and this is also very important, always fill in the brow to the shape you want to create before removing the hair. This allows you to know for sure what hair you will keep and what hair you will get rid of. If you just go willy-nilly and start removing hair without a plan, 99% of the time you will end up removing hair that you intended to keep and you cause yourself a lot of undue stress as you scramble to “fix” the mistake with fill in and flattery. It’s always better to take the time up front to make sure you know what you’re doing.

These tips are deceptively simple. They can be used by novice and experienced technicians alike. The object is to make yourself and your client feel comfortable and confident. I am optimistic that if followed, these two tips will save you hours of undue heartache and stress, help build your credibility, and give you a long-lasting, easy-breezy and brilliant career.
