SKIN WITH ALEXANDRIA PRO

It’s no secret that our company is a strong advocate of our "Full Circle of Skin Conditioning®" program, which focuses on holistic and personalized approaches to sugaring hair removal and skin health. It emphasizes the use of products and techniques that support healthy, resilient skin for all skin types, including those with sensitivities.

Based on the general principles of our skin-health philosophy, the "Full Circle of Skin Conditioning®" program prioritizes products and methods that strengthen and soothe the skin, which has proven to be beneficial for individuals with conditions like sensitive skin, psoriasis, or eczema.

Sensitive Solution

Solution

For sensitive skin, the program includes skin-healthy products that avoid irritation, inflammation, and harsh chemicals. Psoriasis and eczema typically require skincare that not only soothes and hydrates but also helps reduce flare-ups and manage inflammation. Therefore, if your sugaring program includes non-stripping, nourishing, and barrier-repairing ingredients, it will be extra helpful for people with these conditions.

But it doesn’t stop there when it comes to sugaring…

Our sugaring technique and products are often regarded as safe and effective for sensitive skin, especially

in comparison to traditional waxing or other hair-removal methods. Here’s why sugaring is very suitable for sensitive skin types:

Clients who suffer from eczema, psoriasis, or something simpler such as keratosis can be safely sugared to remove hair that is growing within these conditions. But even without these conditions, some clients simply have very sensitive skin types. With a gentle technique, a smooth sugar paste, and the penetration of the sugar into the follicles, sugaring can extract the hair gently in its natural direction. Automatically, this prevents unnecessary discomfort and potential pain. When you extract a hair against its natural direction by yanking it backward and pushing down on the folli -

cle—more specifically, the opening of the follicle—the client will feel it a lot more. This action will cause irritation from the hard friction and potential inflammation—more intense red dots.

Gentle, Natural Ingredients

Sugaring products typically feature natural ingredients like sugar, lemon juice, and water. These ingredients are far less irritating to the skin than the synthetic chemicals found in many waxing products. They are also free from artificial fragrances, preservatives, and other potentially irritating ingredients that can cause reactions in sensitive skin.

Since the ingredients are simple and natural, they are less likely to trigger allergic reactions, making them more suitable for individuals with sensitive skin.

don’t leave home

WITHOUT YOUR ESSENTIALS

Vacation season is quickly approaching. Don’t forget to inlcude Hale & Hush in your travel plans, especially if you’re looking to maintain your skin care routine on the go! Our products are known for being gentle, effective, and perfect for sensitive skin, which makes them ideal for the stresses that travel can put on your skin. We even have a Hale & Hush branded travel bag to ensure you have everything you need for your vacation skincare routine.

Lower Temperature Application

One of many advantages of sugaring is that the sugaring paste is applied at a low temperature (lukewarm or body temperature). This eliminates the risk of burns or skin irritation, which can be especially problematic for sensitive skin. It won’t overstimulate blood flow or cause inflammation. The technique itself involves applying/ molding the sugaring paste against the direction of hair growth and removing it in the direction of hair growth. This minimizes the pulling on the skin, which can be harsh, and reduces the likelihood of skin irritation or follicle damage.

Exfoliating Properties Without Stripping

Sugaring treatments are not only for hair removal; sugaring is a great treatment even without hair, as it naturally exfoliates the skin. But unlike harsh physical exfoliants, it doesn’t strip the skin of its natural oils. For sensitive skin, maintaining the skin’s natural moisture barrier is crucial, and sugaring is a gentler way to exfoliate compared to traditional abrasive scrubs and peels. The technique used in sugaring is also less likely to lead to ingrown hairs—a common problem with other hair removal methods that can cause bumps and irritation. This is important for people with sensitive skin who may already have reactive skin.

Less Skin Pulling

When sugar pastes are formulated effectively and the technique is performed with the gentleness it is intended, sugaring reduces the stress on the skin when removing the paste, leading to less discomfort and preventing or reducing the possibility of irritation. This makes it an ideal method for those who react negatively to more aggressive techniques.

Sugaring is more than hair removal—it’s a skin-loving ritual designed to soothe, protect, and respect even the most sensitive skin.

Improved Skin Healing

Soothing Aftercare: Sugaring is often followed by soothing and calming products that help to hydrate and calm the skin. All of our company’s aftercare products are formulated with sensitive skin in mind, containing ingredients that promote healing and reduce inflammation. This is especially helpful for people with skin conditions like eczema or psoriasis, which often require extra care and moisture to stay balanced. We purposely formulate all our products to be perfume/fragrance-free, vegan, cruelty-free, and gluten-free.

Suitable for Sensitive Areas

Delicate Areas: Because sugaring is so gentle, it can be used on sensitive areas of the body where the skin is more prone to irritation, such as the bikini line, underarms, and face. This is particularly beneficial for individuals with more delicate or reactive skin, who may struggle with other forms of hair removal in these areas.

Full Facial Hair Removal:

It is very important to discuss the facts of a full-face sugaring treatment with your client before you begin. The information your client provides to you

via a Client Record Card can serve you well when discussing the treatment with them.

In many cases, the vellus hair found on the face is of a denser growth—having more vellus hair per square inch. The denser growth of vellus hair on the face may make the skin more prone to irritation during hair extraction. Vellus hair is fine and shallow, sitting just above the nerve endings. When it’s extracted, it can cause minor trauma to the follicle and surrounding skin, leading to an inflammatory response. This irritation can trigger histamine release, leading to swelling and, in some cases, the formation of pustules as the skin attempts to protect itself. While this isn’t technically an allergic reaction, it is an immune response to the irritation caused by the extraction process. This is why our company strongly advocates and teaches performing a patch test before sugaring a first-time client request for full-face sugaring. We recommend a one-side jawline patch test. Even if all goes well and there are no negative reactions, we suggest waiting at least 5 days to see if any delayed reaction shows up.

If your client insists on having the treatment performed immediately, you can

Extend lashes with our NEW Length Define Tubing Mascara a peptide-rich formula for longer, stronger natural lashes with every swipe. 150% longer lashes*

NATURAL LASHES AMPLIFIED

request they sign a waiver form releasing you from any liability. That form can be a generic document that clearly defines all the counsel you provided. We have a product called CC’me (Calm and Cool Me) that can be used before sugaring to help prevent these reactions, and afterward anytime they start to feel a bit itchy. If they do experience a reaction, CC’me will help heal it faster, as will the Mud Puddle.

I know a lot on this topic because I had the worst reaction I have ever seen when my full face was sugared 34 years ago. Although my facial hair was near translucent in color, it was very dense and long—and it was extracted against the direction of its natural growth, which, knowing what I know today, could have exacerbated the reaction. We had no research on prevention or healing this type of reaction back then. It took three whole months to heal!

Fewer Skin Reactions

Sugaring generally results in fewer adverse reactions, such as bumps, redness, and ingrown hairs. Since the sugaring paste is so natural and less aggressive, it’s less likely to trigger skin reactions like folliculitis or post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation, which are more common with other hair removal methods.

Your sugaring technique and products should be safe for sensitive skin types because they focus on gentle, natural ingredients, lower-temperature application, reduced trauma to the skin, and effective exfoliation without stripping moisture. This makes sugaring a great option for individuals with sensitive skin, eczema, or psoriasis who want to avoid harsher hair removal methods that can irritate or exacerbate skin conditions.

As always, better safe than sorry! When in doubt, do the patch test!

One of the proudest moments in my career was receiving this testimonial from a colleague of prestigious academic background:

“The results experienced by many using the Alexandria Professional products reinforce the value of what Lina Kennedy created—a comprehensive, healing, and balancing system to help balance the skin, even where eczema or psoriasis exists.”

SOOTHING THE MODERN SKIN

Why Sensitivity is on the Rise

In today’s fast-paced, overstimulated world, estheticians are witnessing a sharp rise in clients presenting with sensitive or reactive skin. From redness and inflammation to stinging, flaking, and barrier dysfunction, these symptoms are no longer isolated cases—they’re becoming a widespread concern. For many skin professionals, “sensitive skin” has gone from being a niche issue to a daily challenge in the treatment room. But what’s driving this epidemic of sensitivity, and more importantly, how can estheticians stay ahead of it?

Modern Stressors, Modern Skin

Chronic stress, environmental toxins, lack of sleep, processed diets, and the relentless scroll of skincare misinformation are wreaking havoc on the skin. Add to that the overuse of actives like retinoids, exfoliating acids, and benzoyl peroxide—often applied without proper education—and it’s no wonder the skin barrier is crying out for help.

the Modern Skin

“Clients are layering product after product, trying to mimic trends they see online, without understanding the longterm effects,” says licensed esthetician and acne specialist Vanessa G. “I see more and more compromised barriers due to DIY skincare, over-exfoliation, and mixing too many actives without support.”

Sensitized vs. Sensitive Skin

It’s important to distinguish between truly sensitive skin, which is often genetic and tied to conditions like eczema or rosacea, and sensitized skin, which is a reactive state caused by internal or external triggers. Sensitized skin is more common and often preventable with the right care and education. This distinction is key for estheticians when creating personalized treatment plans.

Common Triggers Behind the Sensitivity Surge:

• Harsh exfoliants – both physical scrubs and overuse of AHAs/BHAs

• Fragranced skincare – especially synthetic fragrances or potent essential oils

• Overcleansing or high pH cleansers

– stripping the skin of its natural oils

• Sun exposure – without consistent and proper SPF protection

• Inflammation from within – poor diet, hormonal imbalances, and unmanaged stress

The Esthetician’s Role in Repair and Rebalance

Now more than ever, clients are looking to estheticians for healing—not just results. That means shifting from harsh corrective treatments to calming, nourishing protocols that prioritize the skin barrier.

Simplifying a client’s at-home routine

is often the first step. This may include removing exfoliating acids, replacing multiple steps with barrier-building essentials, and introducing supportive ingredients designed to heal.

Hero Ingredients for Sensitive Skin:

• Panthenol (Pro-Vitamin B5): Deeply hydrates and supports tissue repair

• Centella Asiatica: A botanical powerhouse that calms inflammation and boosts healing

• Ceramides: Crucial for rebuilding the lipid barrier and preventing moisture loss

• Colloidal Oatmeal or Oat Extract: Soothes itching, calms redness, and reduces irritation

• Allantoin: Gentle enough for even the most reactive skin and promotes smoothness

In the treatment room, consider adding LED light therapy (especially red light), lymphatic drainage, cool compresses, and custom masks infused with healing botanicals. Avoid intense modalities like microdermabrasion, strong peels, or high-strength enzymes unless the skin is fully restored.

Reframing the Conversation Around Sensitivity

Estheticians are not only skincare providers—they’re educators, advocates, and emotional support systems. Talking with clients about why their skin is reacting, rather than just how to fix it, builds trust and long-term loyalty. Use your expertise to create a safe space for skin recovery and to guide clients away from fear-based skincare decisions.

Now more than ever, clients are looking to estheticians for healing— not just results.

Compassion is the New Correction

As sensitivity becomes more common, the need for a barrier-first approach is essential. By staying informed, choosing supportive products and treatments, and educating clients on gentle, sustainable routines, estheticians can play a critical role in reversing the sensitivity epidemic. Because at the end of the day, healthy skin isn’t about doing more—it’s about doing what’s right.

Esthetician Spotlight

What made you want to become an esthetician?

I was a freelance makeup artist, and clients kept asking me for advice on what to do to prep their skin. To be honest, I barely knew how to take care of my own skin—lol. So I started looking into certifications or education that could give me more credibility as a makeup artist and further my knowledge in the beauty industry. Eventually, I discovered what an esthetician did and enrolled in a program. Little did I know it was the beginning of an amazing journey.

Can you share the story behind the leap of faith you took to open KM&Co. in 2020?

In March 2020, my world was turning upside down. The pandemic hit, and the spa I worked at shut down. I was a new single mother to my son, who was just 7 months old, and living with my grandmother. I was barely making enough to pay bills. So I applied for unemployment and treated the next couple of months as an extended maternity leave. During that time, I picked up a book I had read years ago called You’re a Badass at Making Money, and it reignited my drive to be a business owner. I decided it was time to take a chance, and I found a small studio in San Mateo, CA. I told myself I had six months to give it all I got. So I used every penny I had left, picked up the camera, and started to document the real and raw journey of opening a solo practice. I had a small grand opening on August 2, 2020, and started making my presence known in the Bay Area. I’ve grown a wonderful clientele, hired an employee, and have been there ever since!

What made you want to start a YouTube channel, and what advice can you give to estheticians who would like to grow their presence online?

I always liked interior makeover shows growing up, so the idea was to show the transformation of my studio from start to finish—and to have a video diary for myself to look back on and hopefully inspire someone else. The last video of that series was an Esthetician Room Tour, and that’s the one that went viral. I said, “Hey,

this is working,” and stuck to it! My advice would be to stay consistent and do it regardless of likes and support. As long as you have something to share that brings value and inspiration, people will follow. I’ve been posting once a week for almost five years now—with some exceptions, of course—but for the most part, social media has become a non-negotiable part of this career. So instead of looking at it as a drag or a task, look at it as a way to reflect on your journey, inspire, and educate.

Congratulations on your new storefront! Can you share a little bit about your new space and the journey it took to get here?

(I don’t have a new storefront just yet, but we did just do a rebrand. Do you want me to talk about that? A new storefront is coming, but not just yet!)

4. KM&Co. emphasizes custom esthetic services. How do you tailor treatments to meet individual client needs?

Haha, that’s a loaded question because it’s hard to write this out in a single paragraph. But the best way to learn this is to keep educating yourself and gain experience. You need to work on hundreds of faces to better understand how to customize and know what product or treatment works for which client. I think working at a high-

end spa for at least a year really helped me start off on the right foot and gain more confidence before opening a solo practice. And now, being an educator in this industry, it’s encouraging me to put this concept and application into my courses, videos, and trainings. But the customization ultimately comes from having a solid understanding of the fundamentals and chemistry. More resources are coming to expand on this—so stay tuned!

What’s your philosophy on helping clients feel like a more radiant version of themselves?

I always want guests to feel like they can come to our practice just as they are. Our goal is to help everyone leave a better version of themselves through

our services and interactions. I strongly believe the more you take care of yourself, the better you feel from the inside out. And that contributes to bettering the version of you that your family, friends, colleagues, etc., get to experience day to day. We want guests to be happier, healthier, and overall more radiant. I’ve seen clients transform in more ways than just their skin—it’s beautiful to watch. We love being part of their milestones and glow-up journey.

Can you tell us about the variety of services you offer at KM&Co., from skin and body care to beauty treatments?

I like to say we perform facials that give clients a mix of results and relaxation. We offer custom 50-, 80-, and 120-minute facials, and also advanced treatments like dermaplaning, chemical peels, and hydrodermabrasion. My employee Kristen D. does full-body waxing and body services for the back and booty. Lastly, we also offer brow lamination and lash lifts. We definitely plan to add more as we expand!

What inspired you to establish the Radiance Academy for esthetics continuing education?

I started seeing comments from followers saying they weren’t confident or learning much in esthetician school, especially during COVID. I felt I had knowledge to share, and I’ve also done training in previous job experiences. So I felt this went hand in hand and figured— why not try it? I started doing in-person trainings and really loved seeing other estheticians feel more confident after working with me. And genuinely, I think by sharing the knowledge I have—especially with newer estheticians—we’ll all continue to uphold a certain standard collectively in this industry. I believe how I represent myself as an esthetician is how we’re all represented, and vice versa.

How do you balance being an educator, mentor, and mother with running your business?

To be honest, there is no real trick to balance, nor have I perfected this—lol. I have my seasons of really killing it and juggling everything well, and other seasons where I have to pull back to keep myself sane. The best tip I can give is to give yourself some grace, pray/meditate daily, have a routine and planner, learn how to prioritize tasks, and don’t try to do everything yourself. You need a community around you. I would not be able to do what I do without my employee, a nanny, my close friends, and family. Also, try not to compare your-

self because everything always looks so effortless online—but that’s never really the case. You are right where you need to be, and as long as you’re doing your best, that’s what matters. The rest will follow.

What qualities or attributes do you believe are the key to your success?

I would say tenacity, consistency, always being a student, helping others, and keeping love at the center of what I do.

10. What’s one key lesson you aim to teach aspiring estheticians through your coaching and courses?

To never quit on yourself and always keep learning!

Opening your own storefront is a huge milestone—what was the biggest challenge you faced, and how did you overcome it?

I think the biggest challenge was juggling everything that comes with having a business. You really don’t realize how much goes into it until you’re in it. That’s why I think having other people to support you—and a mentor or mentors—helps a lot.

Where do you see KM&Co. and Radiance Academy in the next five years?

I would love to open bigger and more locations and hire more team members to work with us. I also want a space to hold in-person trainings locally but also travel to major cities to offer master classes. I can see this academy growing globally and traveling around the world to do what I love. I also want to create a program or non-profit that helps fi-

nancially sponsor and mentor aspiring estheticians who might not have the resources to do it themselves. Lastly, of course, I want to keep adding to my online resources, start an online storefront, and create a professional skincare line.

How do you stay motivated and continue to evolve in such a dynamic industry?

Evolving in this industry requires taking continuing education courses and learning from other seasoned and successful estheticians. Staying motivated is a bit deeper. I believe part of my motivation has come from survival—wanting to support myself and my son— but the other part is wanting to leave a positive legacy in this lifetime. I always knew I had a deep desire to inspire and show others that despite the hardships I’ve faced, you can have a loving and fulfilled life helping others and pursuing your passion.

What advice would you give to someone considering a career in esthetics?

You need to have a deep love and genuine care for people and a passion for aesthetics. We touch people’s faces and get closer to them than even some of their own family or friends do. It’s an amazing field to get into, and everyone who gets their license has earned it and takes pride in being an esthetician. Everyone starts at zero, so enjoy the ride—and you will grow and get better the longer you’re in the industry. Don’t quit, always be learning, find the right community and mentor, and there’s no reason why you won’t be successful as an esthetician.

When Skin Speaks

How to Differentiate Between Reactive, Sensitive & Sensitized Conditions

When clients come in complaining of stinging, redness, or unexpected breakouts, the culprit is often labeled simply as “sensitive skin.” But in the world of skincare, not all sensitivity is created equal. There’s a big difference between sensitive, sensitized, and reactive skin—and knowing which one you’re dealing with can make or break your treatment plan. Let’s break it down.

Sensitive Skin: Born This Way

What it is:

Sensitive skin is a skin type—meaning it’s largely genetic. People with sensitive skin are born with a more delicate skin barrier and may have a lifelong tendency toward redness, flushing, and irritation.

Common signs:

• Thin or translucent skin

• Redness and visible capillaries

• Frequent irritation to products

• Prone to conditions like eczema, rosacea, or atopic dermatitis

Best approach:

Focus on strengthening the skin barrier with calming, fragrance-free, minimal ingredient formulas. Think ceramides, hyaluronic acid, oat extract, and barrierrepairing moisturizers.

Sensitized Skin: Created Over Time

What it is:

Sensitized skin is a condition, not a type. It’s caused by external factors— like over-exfoliating, harsh products, pollution, or even stress—that compromise the skin barrier. The good news? It’s usually temporary and reversible.

Common signs:

• Burning or stinging when applying skincare

• Sudden dryness or tightness

• Flaking or breakouts in areas not usually acne-prone

• Reactivity to products that previously caused no issues

Best approach:

Treat the inflammation and repair the barrier. Strip back the routine to the basics—cleanser, moisturizer, and

SPF—until the skin stabilizes. Introduce soothing ingredients like aloe, calendula, niacinamide, and panthenol.

Reactive Skin: Highly Triggered

What it is:

Reactive skin is often confused with sensitive or sensitized skin, but it’s characterized by immediate and often dramatic responses to triggers—ranging from weather to emotions to certain foods or ingredients.

Common signs:

• Flushing, itching, or burning within minutes of exposure

• Sudden welts or redness

• Skin that changes depending on mood, climate, or stress levels

• May overlap with conditions like rosacea, allergies, or histamine intolerance

When Skin Speaks

Best approach:

Start by identifying and avoiding known triggers. Work with calming, anti-inflammatory ingredients and encourage clients to track reactions in a skin diary. Consider holistic support like stress management or gut health support when needed.

Why It Matters for Estheticians

As professionals, we must differentiate between these three states to choose the safest and most effective protocols. A true sensitive client may never tolerate microdermabrasion, while a sensitized client might once the barrier is healed. A reactive client may require patch testing and a more holistic, lifestyle-based approach to fully calm the skin. Listening closely to your client’s skin history—and observing how it reacts in real-time—is key.
