Lower Moreland Township School District
Mission and Beliefs District Mission: To foster individual excellence in a nurturing environment by integrating a dedicated staff, an innovative curriculum, and community resources, while promoting respect for self and others. All students will acquire the knowledge, skills, values and attitudes necessary to become lifelong learners and citizens who will think critically, act responsibly, communicate clearly and collaborate effectively in a global community. In our school libraries, we support students in achieving these goals and teachers in constructing meaningful lessons to meet their curricular needs. Ultimately, we hope to create lifelong learners of all ages via our LMTSD School Library Media Centers.

Pine Road welcomes Peter Lerangis
Students enjoy reading in the Story Tower
Pine Road On September 24th, Pine Road hosted Peter Lerangis, author of the Max Tilt series, Seven Wonders series, and some of the tiles in the 39 Clues series. Older students loved searching our library for 39 clues to re-familiarize themselves with the different sections of the library. Third grade students took a tour to find the book series that are popular with our Pine Road readers like Owl Diaries, Vet Volunteers, and Geronimo Stilton, among many others! First and second grade students worked to practice good book care and spread the word by publishing a class book (second graders) and creating bookmarks based on the book, Penelope Popper, Book Doctor (first graders). Kindergarten kids went on a book hunt in the library to check out books. Fifth grade students signed up for PRTV job assignments and began recording morning announcements for the month of October. Students will have the opportunity to try out each job they have signed up for at least once during the course of the year.

Murray Avenue Last year at Murray Avenue we set our sights on establishing a culture of making in the library with great success. With donated items such as sewing machines and fabric, crochet hooks and yarn, a circa 1984 typewriter, Snap Circuits, Legos and K’Nex, and borrowed tech from throughout the district, there is always something new to explore in the library. Students arrive eager to pick up a new skill and often return to proudly teaching one another what they’ve just learned. This past week our Murray Makers have been solving 2x2 Rubik’s Cubes to build a mosaic using logic, discovered and shared algorithms, and mapping skills. Building on the popularity of our 3D printer, we recently added a laser cutter to our Maker tools through a generous grant from the Foundation for Lower Moreland Schools. This year we are seeking to make the library’s resources more accessible to students and to increase independent reading. We have established structures that promote equitable access to the library during lunch, designated two desktops as library catalogs, and we’re working with teachers to provide class time for students to exchange books. We are also experimenting with reconfiguring the way fiction books are organized to promote student self-selection of reading materials.

Lower Moreland High School Thanks to the Foundation for Lower Moreland Schools the HS library has been completely remodeled! The students love how the new space provides opportunities for group and individual work, flexible seating, and a Makerspace. Students are engaging with technology and researching with ease in the new space. We celebrated Banned books week at the end of September and took a look at books that have been banned or censored from years ago to present day. Art classes came into the Makerspace and learned how to 3D model, 3D print and make vinyl stickers. The students used online programs to develop their 3D models, then sent the file to the machines to be printed. Also, the library courtyard was fixed up in the spring by the Environmental Club. It is thriving now, with the flowers and shrubs bringing numerous birds, bees, and butterflies to our windows.

Book Buzz Max Tilt: Fire the Depths by Peter Lerangis follows the adventures of Max and his cousin Alex Verne, both descendants of Jules Verne as they navigate the deep sea and find themselves traveling around the world.
