Library Newsletter Lower Moreland Township School District Mission and Beliefs District Mission: To foster individual excellence in a nurturing environment by integrating a dedicated staff, an innovative curriculum, and community resources, while promoting respect for self and others. All students will acquire the knowledge, skills, values and attitudes necessary to become lifelong learners and citizens who will think critically, act responsibly, communicate clearly and collaborate effectively in a global community. In our school libraries, we support students in achieving these goals and teachers in constructing meaningful lessons to meet their curricular needs. Ultimately, we hope to create lifelong learners of all ages via our LMTSD School Library Media Centers.

Kindergarten students went on a Book Hunt to learn where to locate books and how to check their books out. They’ve also been learning about sequence as a first step to coding in our STEM class. First and Second grade students have been discussing how and why we take care of library books and second graders even made a book to share with our kindergarteners called “If You Give a Kid a Book.” Fourth grade students have been researching the countries that we have been matched up with for our annual ISLM bookmark exchange. This year we have been matched with Croatia and India. Fifth grade students have been learning the work behind the scenes that makes our Pine Road TV studio a success in producing our morning show.

Highlights from October
Murray Avenue
October was a busy month at Murray Avenue! Communication Arts spent a week building product prototypes from cardboard and construction tools and recording persuasive commercials using our iPads and green screen. Reading classes visited the library for spooky book talks highlighting our selection of supernatural and horror fiction to kick off the most haunting time of the year. Making at Lunch was in full swing, including a lot of first-time knitting, 3D printing, button making, and exploration with small (but powerful!) handheld LED microscopes. The last week in October was once again filled with creepy stories told by LED candlelight during lunchtime. The library hosted a number of special guests this month, including author Antony John who visited to share with us how much fun one can have while researching to write a novel. Mr. John has written two middle-grade novels, Mascot and The Other, Better Me. Local comic book artist and animator delivered a workshop on stop-motion animation to our STEAM Club, teaching them the mechanics and guiding them through their first project with LEGO minifigures. There’s still time to sign up for his illustration workshop on 11/7 at Huntingdon Valley Library! We kicked off Skype a Scientist this year with a live session with archaeologist Sarah Miller, the Northeast & East Central Region Director of the Florida Public Archaeology Network. Ms. Miller is a historic cemeteries specialist, and connected with us live from the oldest above ground cemetery in Florida, Tolomato Cemetery. Who shall we Skype with next: A neuroscientist? A programmer? Cast your vote in the library!

Lower Moreland High School High school classes are con nuing to use the library for their research projects, mee ngs, and brainstorming and we are loving all of the crea ve energy in the room. This past month, we have welcomed many college representa ves for mee ngs with our Juniors and Seniors who are making their academic choices for the future. We believe that we have had the biggest library gathering ever when a representa ve from Penn State had their mee ng here. Every seat in the house was packed with prospec ve lions. We have started a project to display all of the senior class panorama photos that we have access to and it really dresses up the library and the current students love checking seeing all of the alumni on the wall. We are s ll looking for some missing photos and for funding for some more frames. If you have a panorama photo that you would like to donate or you would like to help us buy some frames, please check out the Senior panorama project site at nyurl.com/LMHSLIB9 What kind of library would we be, if we ignored the opportunity to highlight one of the most popular genres of books, and a great fall celebra on? Our Halloween book display proved to be very popular and even offered a bit of historical perspec ve on our library. We displayed works of Shelly, King, Poe, and others. We found that our copy of Poe’s short stories has been consistently checked out since 1963! That is a great history of spooky tales in the valley.
