March 2019

Library Newsletter Lower Moreland Township School District Mission and Beliefs District Mission: To foster individual excellence in a nurturing environment by integrating a dedicated staff, an innovative curriculum, and community resources, while promoting respect for self and others. All students will acquire the knowledge, skills, values and attitudes necessary to become lifelong learners and citizens who will think critically, act responsibly, communicate clearly and collaborate effectively in a global community. In our school libraries, we support students in achieving these goals and teachers in constructing meaningful lessons to meet their curricular needs. Ultimately, we hope to create lifelong learners of all ages via our LMTSD School Library Media Centers.

Drop Everything and Read

Read Across America

Pine Road During the month of February, we explored this year’s newest winners of the Caldecott Award in grades 1 and 2; the Theodor Seuss Geisel Award in Kindergarten; the Coretta Scott King Award in Grades 3, 4, and 5; the Pura Belpre Award in Grade 3; and the Newbery Award in Grades 4 and 5. As part of our exploration of both the Caldecott Award and the Theodor Seuss Geisel Award, students in the corresponding grades read each of the award winners and then vote on the book they think is most deserving of the medal (gold) as opposed to the honor winners which receive a silver medal. This prepares students to cast their votes for the Pennsylvania Young Reader’s Choice Award winners which will be completed in early March and presented to our students and teachers as March Madness brackets. Students in grades K-2 are also preparing for their author visit with author of the popular Katie Woo series, Fran Manushkin. Fran will be visiting our school on Tuesday, March 5th. And, entries continue to be accepted for the Young American Poetry Digest contest until March 8th. Entry forms are available on the counter in the library and on the Virtual Backpack.

Highlights from February

Murray Avenue Our annual Creative Cafe & Book Fair in February was a delightful showcase of creative talent. Students presented musical and dramatic performances as well as poetry readings, and original and collaborative artwork. By popular demand we have added 400 KEVA planks to our collection of Murray Maker materials for use at lunchtime. KEVA planks can be used to build and experiment with structural design, and we are already seeing innovative creations. Thanks to a generous gift from the PTA, our 3D printers are now set up to print both flexible and rigid plastics. The additional of flexible filament will allow students to print items such as phone cases or stamps.

Lower Moreland High School T-Shirt Fab Lab Classes and students are flocking to the fab lab to create one of a kind t-shirts! Students begin the process using design so ware, crea ng a unique logo using posi ve and nega ve space. They then print the image onto a vinyl s cker using the Silhoue e Cameo. The shirts look very professional! Any student or club interested in crea ng their own gear, please reach out to Ms. Curzi.

3D Printed Music Collaboration The library is collabora ng with Mr. Pastorok to build capo’s for the music students. Using nkercad.com the students created a .stl file which specifically met the classes needs. More collabora on is in the works to use 3D printed instruments.

MakerSpace Stop by the library this month to make a small print using a 3D printed prin ng press created from the Open Press Project. Students can make the ‘stamp’ for the print using the 3D printers, or using a piece of foam. Prints are made on small cardstock, about 2x4 inches.
