Lone finalist named Roma ISD boss on tap for top post By Judith Rayo LAREDO MORNING TIME S

After one year of searching for a superintendent, Zapata County ISD has named a Roma ISD administrator as the lone finalist. Carlos Gonzalez, a career and technical education director and assistant athletic director at Roma Independent School District, was named the finalist Tuesday night at a

ZCISD school board meeting. Under state law, the school board is required to wait 21 days before signing a contract with a new superintendent. Gonzalez has 11 years of principal and assistant principal experience. “The district is excited to have Mr. Gonzalez lead the district and serve the students, staff, parents and the entire community of ZCISD,” a press release states.

In 1993, he served ZCISD as a science teacher and as head basketball coach. Due to a personal family matter, he returned to Roma. Gonzalez said it has been his dream to become superintendent one day. “I’m honored and excited for this opportunity,” he said. “I expect many good things to happen.” Gonzalez said his focus will

Oscar Garza, 26, died of gunshot wounds while fishing on the lake, said Zapata County Sheriff’s Chief Deputy Raymundo Del Bosque. A second man in the boat, Javier Gonzalez, 21, jumped into the water to avoid the gunfire and was taken to a hospital and treated for hypothermia, Del Bosque said. Both men are residents of Starr County. The sheriff’s office received a call at 8:46 p.m. about the shooting, Del Bosque said. “Two young guys were fishing out on the lake … over by Falcon State Park,” he said. “They were confronted by another boat … and it started escalating and the guys shot at Mr. Garza and Mr. Gonzalez. They fatally injured Mr. Garza, who died there in the boat. Mr. Gon-

The 2016 Christmas Parade and Lighting of the County Plaza was a huge success thanks to the support of the community, event sponsors and volunteers. The Zapata County Chamber of Commerce says it could not do what it does without the generous support. Thanks to them, over 800 gifts were given to the community's youth.
