It’s Trick or Treat season again, and as usual, it’s a mixed blessing. The “trick” is the sudden onslaught of much cooler weather (but no surprise there, as it usually hits around Hallowe’en!) and “treat” is the small amount of rain and snow that has accompanied the cooler temperatures …moisture that is certainly badly needed in the area. Hopefully the weather won’t be too nasty for all the little ghosts, goblins and miniature super-heroes that will be trudging around from door-to-door on Wednesday evening. This spooky-looking abandoned building near Semans will certainly be given a wide berth by the local youngsters. It looks scary enough on a regular evening, and will certainly be much more so on “All Hallows Eve”. -photo by Lori Degenstien, Govan / LMT Staff

Many people thought this childhood disease no longer existed. However, for the first time in over 15 years a case of measles has been diagnosed in Saskatoon Health Region. This marks the sixth case of measles in the province since September 2011. Four cases have been found in Regina Qu’Appelle Health Region and earlier this month a case was reported in Prince Albert Parkland Health Region. “Today, measles is a rare disease in Canada,” says Dr. Julie Kryzanowski, Deputy Medical Health Officer Saskatoon Health Region. “Most cases of measles in Canada are related to international travel. But to prevent imported measles from becoming outbreaks, Saskatoon Health Region is advising people to ensure that they are protected by immunization. Measles is just a plane ride away. When we see a case, it’s a reminder we need to remain vigilant.” Children need two doses of measles vaccine before they are fully protected. Special measles vaccination clinics are being arranged in conjunction with influenza immunization clinics to make it easier for parents to get their children’s shots up to date plus protect them from influenza. There will be many new faces around the table when Strasbourg’s Town Council meets early next month. In last week’s municipal elections, Ken Swanston was elected Mayor, replacing Carol Schultz who chose not to seek reelection. Swanston won in a two-way race against former councilor Harry Schmidt. Of the three incumbent councilors seeking re-election, Jon Josephson, Murray Kondratiuk, and Maria Gaarde, only Josephson and Kondratiuk were successful. New councilors include Kelvin Schapansky, Lance Cornwell, Gary

Wilker and Roy Erickson. Sherry Reiss ran unsuccessfully. Former councilors Glen Lonie and Melinda Leibel did not seek re-election. Local school principal Ken Koenig was elected to Nokomis Town Council with 104 votes, defeating four other challengers (Robert McNichol, Nina Moskal-Braun, Gaetan Carrier, and Debbie Tscher) for the one council seat that was not filled by acclamation. Those acclaimed were: Jim Tait, Dennis Kreiser, Doug Edwards, Kalie Hendry and Leah Edwards. David Mark was elected Mayor by acclamation. Govan’s incumbent Mayor Wes Pearce was re-elected by a wide margin, receiving 96 of the 118 votes cast, defeating challengers Heath Angell and Eric LaFrance. Incumbent councilors Heather Watkins, Dustin Hilderman, and Kevin Kreutzer were re-elected. Newcomers Natasha Watkins and Del Skoropata won over challengers Stephanie Grabarczyk, John Landry and Heidi Perry.

David Mark In the village of Semans, incumbents Malcolm Bains, Perry Fehr, and Duane Linford were re-elected. As well, newcomer Heidi Linford was elected over former councilor Jay Holmes. Ray Lamontagne

remains in the position of Mayor by acclamation. Earl Grey has a largely new village council after last Wednesday’s election. New councilors include Larry Bailey, Devin Bell, and Jane Conway. Incumbent Malcolm Manz was also re-elected. Former councilor Jason Kiel and newcomer Peter Gallow were defeated, while former councilor Rudy Mohr chose not to seek re-election. Earlier on, former councilor Denise Krochak was elected Mayor by acclamation. In Bulyea, Mayor Terry Myers was re-elected by acclamation, and incumbent councilors Brian Flavel, Richard Duthie and Henry Bergey were re-elected in a five-way

race for the four council seats. Newcomer Shane Herman defeated Tom Bender to win the fourth seat. There was not much change in the make up of Raymore’s town council, with five of the incumbent councilors being re-elected: Rita Morrow, Aaron Miller, Reuben Schmidt, Brian Bentz, and Glen Mihalicz. Newcomer Jim Braman was also elected. Eldon Conley didn’t make the cut. Earlier, Malcolm Koncz was elected Mayor by acclamation after long-serving former Mayor Keith Bentz did not seek re-election.
