On Wednesday afternoon, the first leadership hopeful to announce his candidacy was Cam Broten, MLA for Saskatoon Massey Place. “Our party has an incredible legacy and I firmly believe that we have much to

He holds an International Studies degree from the University of Saskatchewan and a Master’s

Deb Higgins, Leadership Contest Committee chair “New Democrats are moving forward, ready to do the hard work of building our tomorrow,” said Deb Higgins, chair of the Leadership Contest Committee which will oversee the race. “Saskatchewan people need a real alternative, and our party is ready to build that alternative, starting today.” Higgins announced that the first of 14 debates will take place on November 17 in Regina. On Thursday, October 25, the town of Nokomis will have a new Mayor. Current Mayor Fred Wright announced last week that he will not be seeking re-election this fall. “I feel it’s time someone else stepped up to the task,” Wright said. “I’ve certainly enjoyed my work as Mayor for the past 3 years, and am proud of the record of service I’m leaving behind. My wife Carol and I plan to relax more, and spend a bit of time doing some of the travelling we’ve had to put off over the past 3 years,” Wright added. Wright said the most rewarding part of his service has been his work towards infrastructure renewal, attracting and keeping businesses in the community, and working to keep Nokomis School open. “The school issue is a very, very important one for the community,” Wright added. “And, even though we dodged a bullet this spring, I don’t think the fight is over yet. The matter of delays in getting the gymnasium roof repaired is worrisome, to say the least.” Mayor Wright was referring to the fact that Horizon
School Division has closed the Nokomis School gymnasium, and is waiting for approval from the provincial Department of Education to begin repairs. When questioned by Last Mountain Times, HZSD responded by saying, even though the division has the necessary funds to make repairs, they must receive approval from the provincial government before spending any money on the project. Nomination day for municipal elections is Wednesday, September 19. Nokomis will be electing a Mayor and six Councillors. It is not yet known how many of the Fred Wright, existing Councillors will be seekcurrent Mayor of Nokomis ing re-election.
