In commemoration of the 100th anniversary of the sinking of the R.M.S. Titanic on the evening of April 14-15, 1912, Last Mountain Theatre Company presented ‘Pilots of the Purple Twilight’ to capacity audiences on May 4 and 5, with an extra performance on May 3 to accommodate patrons. Pictured above is a pivotal scene, following the announcement to passengers that the Titanic is indeed sinking. First Officer Murdoch confronts Bruce Ismay, Chairman of the Board of the White Star Line, challenging him to take responsibility for his part in the chain of events that resulted in the disaster, and forcing each person present to face his or her own mortality. (L to R in background:) Pam Bender as Alice Fortune, Cliff Eisler as Charley Fortune, Juanita Theiss as Mary Canavan, Terry Leibel as Thomas Kilgannon, Lorne Gottselig as John Jacob Astor, Travis Edwards as Isidor Straus, Vicki Cornwell as Ida Straus, (foreground from left) Don Uhl as J. Bruce Ismay, Bill Schwandt as First Officer William Murdoch. Watch for more play coverage in a future issue.

Sask Party plans labour Nokomis Grad Class of 2012 legislation rework The Government of Saskatchewan says it is proposing to modernize, simplify and amalgamate labour legislation as well as explore the creation of a Saskatchewan Employment Code. The government says the intent of the review is to: restructure and re-organize the legislation so it is easier to use and understand; eliminate inconsistencies to reduce confusion; and clarify which legislation applies in particular situations. It says the areas to be considered are essential services legislation, union financial disclosure, notice requirements, collection of employees’ wages after business closure, variable hours of work, and indexation of the minimum wage. Sask Party Labour minister Don Morgan says consultations will play a key role in the development of this new labour legislation. However, the NDP Opposition has condemned the move as an attack on working people, and on human rights. “Our review of the discussion paper has shown us the Sask. Party government has taken its attack beyond organized labour

and is now attacking the basic rights of all working people,” said NDP leader John Nilson. “This review could result in moves that would take Saskatchewan back nearly 100 years. From overtime pay, a 40-hour work week, vacation leave, and basic rights and safety in the workplace - everything you and your neighbours rely on at work is now in question.” “This government’s record with writing labour legislation is atrocious,” said Nilson. “The courts said their last effort - the Public Service Essential Services Act - violates the Charter of Rights and Freedoms. The United Nations said it violates people’s human rights. We don’t trust them with more labour law revisions. The government’s package of leading questions which aim to amend, amalgamate or delete the labour laws is to be reviewed over a short period of 90 days. It took 100 years for Saskatchewan’s workers and governments to build the laws that provide for the decent treatment of working people. The rush to cancel these rights and protections is disturbing.”

The four Nokomis School Grade 12 Grads took a short break from their final exam studies last week to pose for a casual, school yard portrait. Thankfully, the weather co-operated and they didn’t get soaked in the process! See pages 14 and 15 for -LMT photo more information on this year’s graduating class at Nokomis School.
