The continuation of the story of Chuck and Naomi Hoover and their battle with cancer. Naomi Hoover is a Caring Club Member and a Colleague with Goshen Health System.

Part 2-Detection and the Importance of Facing Your Fears The whitish spot on the roof of Chuck’s mouth had been there since his days in the Navy. As a result of a childhood illness, he had intense anxiety whenever anyone examined the inside of his mouth. He avoided regular dental Naomi and Chuck check-ups and suggestions by health enjoying dinner at the summer care providers that he should have it re- house they built together. checked. In the mid 80’s he almost had the spot removed, but backed out at the last minute because of the anxiety. In 2006, just after finishing work on their vacation home, Chuck had a nose bleed that wouldn’t stop. When the Ear, Nose and Throat Physician looked into his nose, he could see the tumor that had been growing up through his sinus cavity. Chuck had cancer. continued on back page

From the Executive Director Excerpts from the speech of our new Executive Director, Lynette Mischel, at the Caring Club dinner September 12, 2010 I join you today deeply inspired by the Foundation’s 40-year legacy in the Goshen community. Thank you for the incredible privilege to be a part of your dreams for the future. I am “wowed” by the funds and grants provided, programs established and gifts put aside for the future.

The Foundation’s new Executive Director, Lynette Mischel.

I grew up in South Bend and spent most of my life in Indiana. I went to Ball State University on a full-ride academic and music performance scholarship. Without the scholarship, I might not have gone to college. The medical education loans and continued on page 2

Executive Director continued scholarships the Foundation offers are particularly meaningful and powerful to me because the scholarships I received due to the generosity of others changed my life. I also earned my MBA from Notre Dame and I hold a certificate in fundraising from the IU School of Philanthropy. One of the best definitions of being inspired is “the act of being drawn in.” I have been “drawn in” over a several month process by the mission and people of the Goshen Hospital and Health Care Foundation. Frankly, I expected to be working in South Bend or Chicago but there was something compelling and intriguing about the situation here that kept calling me to pursue this role and here I am! This is what I found inspiring: Carol Ebersole’s leadership, dedication, and kindness are very inspiring. She leaves an infrastructure, website, staff and marketing materials that could only have been developed through a labor of love. You have my pledge to continued next page

Join the Foundation’s Caring Club There is ALWAYS room at the table for you! We would love to have you join us at next year’s Caring Club Celebration. The Caring Club is a group of special people whose compassion for others leads them to exceptional charity. As a thank you for this kindness they are honored once a year at an exclusive dinner. You can become a Caring Club Member by doing one of the following: • Make an accumulated or one-time gift of $5,000 or more, or • Include the Foundation in your estate plan through a will, charitable remainder trust, retirement plan, insurance policy as well as life income and other deferred gifts.

Executive Director continued do all I can to honor her standards of excellence and leadership. You have a board that cares so much about your future. The quality and character of your board members, their dedication, perseverance, resilience and passion to “do good” has been evident in every conversation. This board really, really CARES and Goshen is lucky to have such solidified leadership working for their community! Their vision is set upon great things to come and they have the commitment, creativity and energy to make them happen! Your 40-year legacy of giving inspires me. Imagine if you could feel every soul touched by your programs or facilities, every new lease on life, every tear wiped dry, every pain eased, every disease battle won or made more tolerable, or every life-changing moment generated by your loving, giving and healing efforts. You would be overwhelmed by the sum total of compassion and love you have provided to so many. Thank you on behalf of those who are still benefitting from your generosity and kindness in their lives. Your hospital’s reputation and achievements inspire me. Your hospital and its staff have achieved a national reputation in medical research, as a great place to work in health care and as a hospital turn-around case study. The talents and resilience of the Foundation’s staff are impressive. The new, classy website: www.givetogoshen.org will make you proud! The generosity and accomplishments listed in the 40th

Anniversary Focus on Giving newsletter will “wow” you. This team is dedicated to getting the word out while exciting others in the process. I feel energized just being around them. I have an important request today and that is to ask you to serve as goodwill ambassadors to build support and gain visibility for the Foundation’s work. Your dedication to and support of the Foundation is critical for our success and we need it more than ever. I would appreciate a call or email if you think of those who might also be aligned with our agenda of sponsoring life-changing moments. And, of course, I would love to get to know you better as well. Please come see us at 1926 W. Lincoln Ave. in Goshen any time. (Or come to the Razzle-Dazzle December 2! See below.)

Finally, be assured that you can trust us to be responsible and careful stewards of the many “precious gifts” you put aside for others. I hope that you feel a sense of pride and joy in the Foundation’s accomplishments and your part in it. I can’t wait to work with you to write the story of all that will be celebrated at our 50th anniversary dinner!

Congratulations Colin Colin Gregory knew he wanted to go into medicine before he even entered high school. His parents, Jodi and Craig, say that he came to them with a list of goals for his high school career. To say he has surpassed them would be an understatement. It is clear that Colin has what it takes to become a fine physician one day. We are happy to have had an opportunity to play a small part in his education. Congratulations Colin—we wish you all the best!

Life continued from page 1 As Naomi looks back, she knows that there were many signs telling him that something needed to be done. She remembers encouraging him to seek care. Chuck’s anxiety and denial caused him to put off medical attention and now his cancer was advanced. The first lesson from Chuck and Naomi’s story is the absolute necessity of early detection. Even though they both knew the spot on the roof of his mouth was not a good sign, Chuck ignored the urging of his wife and medical professionals because his anxiety about the examination and

treatment was greater than his fear of the possibility of the disease. The American Dental Association says that it is now easier than ever to detect oral cancer early, when the opportunity for a cure is great. Regular check-ups and followthrough on recommendations could very well save your life. We will learn in Part 3 of the story about the importance of treatment of the whole patient, and how the physicians at Goshen Center for Cancer Care treated Chuck. Read part three of Life - In Three Parts in our next newsletter.

Loving, Giving, Healing... A Legacy of Life-Changing Moments for over 40 Years

New Annual Giving Programs Cement Foundation’s Future When the last miner emerged from the Chilean mine to a confetti media blitz, one knew there were several rescuers still down below. They quietly and heroically put themselves on the line for others knowing they had absolutely no choice but to succeed. They will not be the ones on the front cover of Time magazine—the victims will be— but their contribution born of undying commitment saved lives and touched families at once. The health needs in the four county area surrounding Goshen are so great, especially for the uninsured, that The Foundation and its friends know we have no choice but to succeed. The new Annual Giving programs will be the pillar of the Foundation’s work going forward. Our friends and supporters will have easier

giving options, more giving societies, more volunteer opportunities, more events to attend and much more fun while making a difference to so many in the community! Check the new annual giving program out online in November at givetogoshen.org and join our rescue crew who never give up!
