Representatives from colleges in California and the Hawaiian Islands will be visiting Oct. 6-9 to determine whether Los Medanos College will be reaccredited. The representatives, led by
Dr. Helen Cox of Kaua’i, will be analyzing LMC to make sure that the standards set by the Accrediting Commission for Community and Junior Colleges (ACCJC) are met sufficiently. Every six years, accredited colleges complete a self-report and are visited by a group of people whose job is to make
sure the school is doing its best to maintain quality education. It’s important to meet these standards so the students moving into certain professions are well prepared and that their diplomas and certificates have merit. The Recital Hall was filled with more than 100 people all devoted to celebrating differences at the Elevating Diversity conference Sept. 13 at Los Medanos College. LMCAS President Gary Walker dubbed the confer-
ence “history in the making” for focusing on gender and sexual identity. Walker and other Associated Students of ficers and Student Life staff wandered throughout the Recital Hall reservation area smiling, shaking hands and getting people registered for the event, a first of its kind
at LMC. Their goal was to create a warm, welcoming atmosphere and a safe environment for attendees. “I think diversity is … a very important dynamic for LMC,” said Walker, who emphasized that multicultural learning benefits society. “The Elevating Diversity conference came about because actually I made a

Students who desire to secure their goal of transferring to a University of California (UC) college next year have less than two weeks to register for the Transfer Agreement Guarantee (TAG). The TAG, which is a formal agreement guaranteeing a student’s enrollment into a participating college, is one of many services offered by the Transfer Center located in Room CC2-225. Unlike the AS-T and AA-T degrees offered by Los Medanos College, which provide a guarantee to transfer from LMC to a CSU, the TAG program only works with participating UCs. This can be valuable to the student who still has a long way to go and wishes to pursue a higher degree from a UC. As the Sept. 30 deadline for TAG registration approaches, students who are graduating from LMC next year and are interested in the guarantee are encouraged to look into the various qualifications needed by the UC of their choice to ensure they meet the requirements necessary for transfer. “A minimum of 30 units are required before registration,” said Transfer Counselor David Reyes. The total number of Full-Time Equivalent Students (FTES) for the Fall Semester at Los Medanos College has exceeded the projected number of 3,613. The Fall Semester schedule was specifically developed to serve that number, which represented about a five percent growth. As of Sept. 8, the census revealed 3,687 FTES are currently enrolled. However, this only represented approximately 8,961 headcount, including part-time students. Also bear in mind that from that date and throughout the semester, the number may change due to late start classes
or those that drop their classes within the drop date. Vice President Kevin Horan believes a combination of factors has contributed to this increased enrollment. “We have worked to offer a schedule that meets the current demand,” said VP Horan. “Many faculty have also taken extra students into their classes.” Not only will this benefit more students in receiving a higher education, but will also benefits LMC financially. LMC is funded by the state and receives approximately 4,600 dollars per FTES. Robin Armour, Director of Admissions and Records, explains a misconception that tuition is enough to fund LMC. Tuition pays only a small See FTES, page 6
